IT HAS BEEN MY PRIVILEGE TO HAVE A VERY GOOD QUILTING COMPANION IN SHIRLEY CLENNON.
WE ALSO TRAVEL TOGETHER.
AND OF COURSE, WHEN WE TRAVEL, WE TALK QUILTS AND CREATE IDEAS BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THE CAR.
AND IN ONE OF MY RECENT TRIPS, I HAD THIS REALLY GOOD IDEA FOR A NEW KIND OF QUILT.
AND IT STARTED WHEN I WAS THINKING ABOUT WHEN YOU GO TO THE ZOO AND PUSH A BUTTON AND HOW THE TIGER WILL TALK AND TELL YOU WHERE HE COMES FROM, AND THEN YOU GO TO A FOREST PRESERVE VERY CLOSE TO OUR HOUSE AND YOU PUSH A BUTTON BY A TREE, AND THE OAK LEAVES TALK AND TELL YOU WHEN THEY COME OUT EACH YEAR.
AND I SAID, "ALL RIGHT, WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A TALKING QUILT."
WELL, AT THAT POINT, SHIRLEY SAID, "GEORGIA, PULL OFF THE ROAD RIGHT AWAY."
AND SHE SAID, "LOOK RIGHT IN MY EYES "AND TELL ME THAT YOU WILL NEVER, NEVER TELL ANYONE THIS STORY."
WELL, I'M SORRY, SHIRLEY.
I HAVE NOT MADE A TALKING QUILT, BUT HOW ABOUT A TALKING HOUSE?

YVONNE PORCELLA IS NEXT TO JEAN, BEST KNOWN PROBABLY FOR HER FABULOUS USE OF COLOR IN THOSE MARVELOUS, MARVELOUS STRIP PIECE CLOTHING DESIGNS.
AND DOWN AT THE LOWER LEVEL, WE START OFF WITH DIXIE HAYWOOD.
DIXIE HAS UPDATED CRAZY PATCH INTO A FUN FLIP-AND-SEW TECHNIQUE THAT ALLOWS THE TEXTURE TO BE CREATED THROUGH HER USE OF FABRIC AND COLOR.

BY NOW YOU'RE PROBABLY EXPERIMENTING WITH YOUR NINE-PATCHES AND MAKING NEW CREATIVE BLOCKS.
REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN MACHINE SEW THE BACKING OF YOUR QUILT AND THEN HAVE THE LAP QUILTING CONNECTION ON THE FRONT SIDE.
THIS QUILT, THE CENTER PANEL WAS QUILTED IN A HOOP.
SO THIS IS A NEW OPPORTUNITY, WHEN YOU'RE WORKING WITH LARGER SECTIONS, TO USE A SUPPORTED HOOP.
I USED A RED QUILTING THREAD ON THIS PARTICULAR QUILT.
AND I THINK IT'S NICE FOR YOU TO UNDERSTAND AND KNOW WHAT COLOR THREAD I'VE USED.
QUITE OFTEN, THAT IS GEARED TO THE BACKING OF THE QUILT.
I USE THAT AS A GUIDE TO CHOOSE MY COLOR.
ON OUR NEXT SHOW, WE LEARNED ABOUT ALL THE NOTIONS AND THE TOYS OF QUILTING.
AND MAKING A WONDERFUL QUILTER'S TOTE ENABLED US TO CARRY ALL THESE THINGS AROUND WITH US.
THEY HAVE TO BE CLOSE AT HAND.
OUR PATTERN OF THE DAY OR OUR BLOCK OF THE DAY WAS THE SPOOL PATTERN.
THAT WAS OUR BEGINNING OF OUR SPINNING SPOOL QUILT.
WANTED TO ALSO MENTION THAT TWO MARVELOUS FEET, SOMETIMES CALLED EITHER THE WALKING FOOT OR THE EVEN FEED FOOT, ARE ADAPTED VERY NICELY FOR DOING OUR PATCHWORK AND FOR QUILTING.
THESE ARE AVAILABLE AT YOUR SEWING NOTION COUNTER.
BUT IF YOU'RE HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE CORRECT NAME, IT'S THE FOOT THAT IS USED TO SEW PLAID MATERIAL TO KEEP THE FEET EVEN SO THAT THE MATERIAL SLIDES THROUGH THE MACHINE AT THE SAME TIME.
ON OUR NEXT SHOW, WE TURNED TO THE LILY DESIGN.
THIS WAS THE NORTH CAROLINA STRING ALONG WITH ME LILY STUDY.
THIS WAS A GROUP PROJECT.
AND I THINK, AS WE WORK AND GET TO KNOW OUR GUILDS AND PEOPLE IN GUILDS, THIS GIVES US AN ASSOCIATION.
AND WE HAVE AN ARRAY OF NAME TAGS BEFORE WE KNOW IT.
ALSO, WHENEVER WE'RE WORKING WITH A BLOCK THAT IS WITHOUT BORDERS, WE HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT, QUITE OFTEN, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE THE DANGLING OR THE FLOATING THREAD, THE ONE THAT WILL BE PICKED UP AGAIN BY THE NEEDLE ONCE THE BLOCKS ARE JOINED.
OUR BLOCK OF THE DAY WAS ALSO A LILY PATTERN, BUT WE CALLED IT A MINI LILY.
WE LEARNED ABOUT BIAS BARS AND HOW TO USE THEM, BOTH THE NARROW ONES AND THE WIDE ONES.
OUR NEXT SHOW, WE HAD A GOOD LOOK AT ALL THE FASHIONS THAT ARE NOW AVAILABLE IN QUILTING, EVERYTHING FROM OUR MARVELOUS SELECTION OF MAPLE LEAF VESTS-- DIDN'T THEY JUST GO ON AND ON?
AND WE ARE SEEING PATCHWORK, SEMINOLE ESPECIALLY, ADAPTED TO YOKES IN DRESSES.
AND EVEN MY JACKET HAS THE NEW IDEA OF THE BARGELLO, WHERE YOU SEW FABRICS TOGETHER THE SAME WIDTH.
AND THEN ONCE YOU'VE SPLICED THEM APART, AS WE HAVE DONE HERE, A WIDTH OF FABRIC, SAY THREE INCHES OF FABRIC, ARE ALL SEWN TOGETHER.
AND THEN BY STARTING AND ADJUSTING THEM BY SIMPLY SLIPPING THEM UP AND RESEWING THEM, YOU CAN CREATE A NEW DESIGN IN YOUR FABRIC.
ALSO, WOULD YOU BELIEVE KNITTING AND CROCHETING WITH FABRIC?
THAT HAS BECOME VERY POPULAR.
AND I MIGHT MENTION TO YOU THAT YOU NEED A LARGE NEEDLE, PROBABLY A 10 AT LEAST, AND VERY NARROW MATERIAL CUT ON THE BIAS.
AND THAT SHOULD BE AT LEAST 1/2 AN INCH OR EVEN NARROWER THAN THAT.
BUT IT DOES KNIT VERY NICELY.
AND OF COURSE, YOU HAVE TO THEN TIE YOUR ENDS TOGETHER AND JUST LET THOSE BE EXPOSED, OR YOU COULD CLIP THEM OFF.
LAYERING YOUR FABRIC HAS ALSO BECOME VERY POPULAR FOR A SLASHED LOOK.
AND WHEN IT IS CUT ON THE BIAS AND THEN WASHED REPEATEDLY, THE FABRIC WILL BEND BACK, AND YOU CAN SEE ALL THE RADIATING COLORS UNDERNEATH.
AND THAT'S A LOT OF FUN TO DO.
OUR BLOCK OF THE DAY WAS THE GATHERING GEESE.
AND WE REMEMBER THAT ON THIS PARTICULAR PANEL, THE GATHERING GEESE, THE FLYING GEESE, CAN BE TURNED IN OR THEY CAN BE TURNED OUT, WHATEVER YOUR CHOICE IS.
THEN FROM THERE, WE EXPERIMENTED WITH ROW LAP QUILTING, NOT ONLY MACHINE PIECING BUT MACHINE QUILTING.
WE LEARNED ABOUT DROPPING THE FEED DOGS AND JUST HAVING FUN DOING FREE-MOTION QUILTING.
THAT SAME IDEA COULD BE ADAPTED TO THE THREAD SKETCHING IDEA.
YOU REMEMBER THIS BOOK, THE SCRAPBOOK FROM THE SHOW.
THIS WAS DONE BY PAT NELSON.
AND THE IDEA HERE IS THAT YOU TRANSFER ANY DESIGN OFF ON MUSLIN.
THEN YOUR FIRST STITCH, YOUR OUTLINE STITCH, IS DONE WITH A NARROW ZIGZAG.
YOUR FILL-IN BECOMES YOUR FREE MOTION OR YOUR MEANDERING, AS WE CALLED IT, ON THE MACHINE.
OUR BLOCKS OF THE DAY WERE THE BOW BASKET... AND THE OCEAN WAVES.
NEXT WE HAD A HOLIDAY EXCURSION AND HAD A LOT OF FUN LEARNING ABOUT THE FUN PATCHWORK PROJECTS THAT WE COULD ADAPT TO OUR HOME AND HAVE A COMPLETE PLAID HOUSE, EVERYTHING FROM A ROUND TREE PILLOW-- HOW ABOUT ABOUT FOUR OR FIVE OF THESE ALL LINED UP ON THE COUCH FOR CHRISTMAS?
WOULDN'T THAT BE CHEERFUL?
AND THEN THE CHRISTMAS TREE SKIRT THAT WAS CALLED SEW AND EXTEND: ALL PASTEL ON ONE SIDE FOR EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR, EXCEPT CHRISTMAS, WE TURN IT OVER FOR UNDERNEATH THE TREE.
AND THAT--REMEMBER, THOSE POINTS WERE MADE JUST LIKE THE GRANDMOTHER'S FAN DESIGN ON OUR FIRST QUILT, THE GYPSY IN MY SOUL.
ON THAT PARTICULAR SHOW, THE SWIRL PATTERN WAS OUR BLOCK OF THE DAY.
WE THEN HAD A CHANCE TO STUDY RECTANGLES.
AND I HOPE YOU HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE RECTANGLE AND HOW IT CAN BE ADAPTED TO WALL HANGINGS.
THIS WAS ANOTHER GROUP PROJECT DONE WITH THE LANDRUM LIBRARY QUILTERS.
DIDN'T AUDREY DO A LOVELY JOB ON THE STAINED GLASS WINDOWS?
IF YOU LOOK VERY CLOSELY, THE DOORS DO OPEN IN THE CHURCH.
AND THEN THE WONDERFUL QUILTING DESIGN REPRESENTS NOT ONLY A CROSS BUT THE PEWS AND PEOPLE SITTING IN.
OF COURSE, THAT WAS "HERE'S THE CHURCH, AND HERE'S THE STEEPLE."
WHEN YOU'RE MAKING THE DOORS, IT'S JUST A MATTER OF, WHEN YOU CUT OUT YOUR FRONT PART, CUT A DUPLICATE AND THEN GO AHEAD AND PUT YOUR BATTING INSIDE.
ENCLOSE THREE SIDES, AND THE RAW EDGES, THEN, WOULD INSERT INTO THIS OPENING SEAM ALL THE WAY DOWN.
OUR BLOCK OF THE DAY WAS THE BRICK PATH.
WE REMEMBERED HERE THAT WE COULD KEEP THE BRICKS THE SAME COLOR ALL THE WAY DOWN, OR WHY NOT EXPERIMENT AND HAVE A DIFFERENT COLOR FOR EACH ONE?
THEN WE WENT ON FURTHER AND HAD A SPECIAL TREAT WITH HELEN KELLEY FROM MINNEAPOLIS.
THIS GAVE US AN OPPORTUNITY TO SEE AND VIEW ALL OF HER WONDERFUL WORKS AND ALSO LEARN ABOUT HER TECHNIQUE OF USING THE IRON WHEN SHE'S DOING APPLIQUE.
I LOVE THAT IDEA OF CUTTING OUT THE TEMPLATE EXACTLY THE WAY THE FINISHED SWIRL IS GOING TO LOOK.
AND REMEMBER HOW SHE CUT HER FABRIC QUITE A BIT LARGER THAN IT ACTUALLY WAS GOING TO BE.
AND THEN USING THE SPRAY STARCH AND A DRY IRON, SHE WAS ABLE TO TURN ALL THAT FABRIC AROUND THAT PERFECT CURVE.
NOW, WHEN THAT HAPPENED, WE WENT RIGHT ON AND SHOWED YOU THE SLIP STITCHING, AND I WANTED TO MAKE THE POINT THAT HELEN DID SAY AFTERWARDS THAT SHE WANTED TO MAKE SURE WE REALIZED THAT AT ONE POINT, BEFORE SHE DID HER ACTUAL APPLIQUE ONTO THE FOUNDATION, SHE DOES TRIM THAT EXCESS OFF.
AND THAT'S SO NICE, BECAUSE ONCE YOUR MATERIAL HAS BEEN TURNED OVER, YOU CAN CONTROL THE AMOUNT OF SEAM ALLOWANCE IF YOU WANT A VERY TINY LITTLE BIT.
BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, YOU CAN MAKE IT EVEN, BECAUSE QUITE OFTEN, THAT SEAM ALLOWANCE CAN BE SEEN FROM THE FRONT SIDE.
WE LIKED SEEING ALL OF HER WORK.
IT WAS JUST BEAUTIFUL.
OUR APPLIQUE QUILT FOR THAT SHOW WAS CALLED TULIPS AND BLUE BONNETS.
AND I WANTED TO ALSO FEATURE AND SHOW YOU THAT IT WOULD BE DONE ON A 10 1/2 INCH SQUARE AND THAT VERY CAREFULLY, YOU WOULD OUTLINE IN PENCIL THE WAY THE DESIGN WAS TO BE PLACED.
YOUR FIRST STITCHING ON THAT QUILT WOULD BE WITH SIX STRANDS OF EMBROIDERY THREAD.
LEAVE DANGLING THREADS.
YOU REALIZE WHAT MAKES THAT QUILT SO BEAUTIFUL IS THAT ONCE YOUR BLOCKS HAVE BEEN LAP QUILTED AND THEN CONNECTED, YOU'RE GOING TO RETHREAD YOUR NEEDLE AND THEN CONNECT THAT STEM THAT FLOWS THROUGH THE WHOLE QUILT.
I THINK YOU HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THAT WENT.
JUST TWO TEMPLATES FOR THAT WHOLE QUILT.
THE BLOCK OF THE DAY WAS VIRGINIA'S CHOICE.
WE SOMETIMES HEAR THIS CALLED HEARTS AND GIZZARDS, BUT WE'VE DECIDED TO CALL IT VIRGINIA'S CHOICE.
FROM THERE, WE WENT TO ANOTHER GROUP PROJECT.
AND THIS WAS OUR TEST PATTERNS BLOCK.
I HAD A GOOD LESSON IN FRAME QUILTING BY IRMA KIRKPATRICK.
I THINK WHAT REALLY IS THE HIGHLIGHTED FEATURE OF THIS PARTICULAR BLOCK ARE THE DIAGONAL 1/4 INCH LINES, THAT IS, DOUBLE LINES THAT GO ON THE DIAGONAL.
AND IT IS ABLE-- WHEN YOU DO THIS QUILTING, IT'S ABLE TO MISS THE SEAM ALLOWANCE, WHICH GIVES YOU A LOT MORE FREEDOM IN QUILTING.
THIS HAS SHIRLEY'S LEDGE IN IT TOO.
WE LEARNED ABOUT INCLUDING LEDGES FOR DIAGONAL ACCENTS, DIDN'T WE?
ALL RIGHT, ON THAT PARTICULAR SHOW, THE WEATHER VANE WAS OUR BLOCK OF THE DAY.
FROM THERE, WE DID FLEXI CURVING.
I HOPE EVERYONE IS FLEXING BY NOW.
ARE YOU HAVING FUN LEARNING CURVED APPLIQUE... ON THE SEWING MACHINE?
IF YOU WANT TO TEST YOUR FLEXI CURVE AND SEE IF IT WORKS FOR YOU, WHY NOT TAKE JUST A SMALL PIECE OF MATERIAL AND AN OVAL OR A ROUND HOOP AND JUST EXPERIMENT IT WITH A VERY SCENIC LOOK IN CLOTH?
ON THIS PARTICULAR ONE, I HAVE INCORPORATED SOME OF THE SHEER FABRIC, THE ILLUSION FABRIC.

ON THE OPPOSITE ONES, GO AHEAD AND SEW YOUR LARGER TRIANGLE ON.
SEW THESE SECTIONS TO YOUR CENTER NINE-PATCH.
THEN IT'S JUST A MATTER OF LINING UP THE TWO OUTSIDE TRIANGLES TO MAKE YOUR ENTIRE SQUARE.
I THINK YOU'LL ENJOY DOING THIS MEXICAN STAR.
NOW, I HAVE VERY CLOSE VALUES IN BLUE HERE.
YOU'D PROBABLY WANT MORE OF A CONTRAST HERE.
I WANTED TO MENTION ONE OTHER THING.
YOU'VE PROBABLY SEEN ME USE WHITE THREAD ON THE ENTIRE SHOW TO SEW THESE BLUES AND PURPLES TOGETHER.
I THINK YOU KNOW I WOULD USE A BLUE OR A GRAY THREAD, BUT WE WANTED YOU TO SEE ALL THE LINES, SO THAT'S WHY WE KEPT IT WHITE.
THE GLOW SHINE BLOCK WAS ALSO THE FEATURED BLOCK OF THE DAY.
AND WEREN'T THE LINES IN THAT STRONG?
I HOPE IT HAS HELPED YOU TO SEE THE RED LINES WHERE ALL THE QUILTING STITCHES GO.

NOW WE'RE GOING TO GO TO OUR BLOCK OF THE DAY.
OUR BLOCK OF THE DAY IS ENTITLED RAINBOW ROW.
YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN CIRCUIT CITY.
CAN YOU IMAGINE THREE HOUSES IN ONE 12-INCH BLOCK?
THERE ARE THREE ELONGATED HOUSES THAT RELY ON THE FACT THAT THE LONG STRIPS ARE CUT 1 1/2 INCHES WIDE, JUST LIKE A LOG CABIN.
AND THEN THE DOORS AND THE WINDOWS ARE INSERTED.
IT TAKES TEN TEMPLATES FOR THIS PATTERN.
AND YOU MIGHT-- THAT IS SOMETIMES A GOOD INDICATION OF HOW HARD A PATTERN IS TO DO.
THAT WOULD BE MY FIRST TIP, TO LOOK AT A BLOCK AND SAY, "HMM, AT LEAST TEN TEMPLATES.
THAT MUST BE A MORE ADVANCED PATTERN."
BUT THIS IS WORTH THE WORK.
IT'S A VERY CUTE PATTERN.
AND YOU CAN HAVE FUN CHANGING THE COLORS OF YOUR HOUSES.
IT IS BASED ON THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE THREE PANELS TO SEW TOGETHER.
WE HAVE THE FIRST PANEL SEWN TOGETHER, AND AS YOU CAN SEE, IT USES THAT PYRAMID TRIANGLE AND THE SKY ABOVE.
THE NEXT PANEL: THIS ONE HAS A CENTERED DOOR.
AND THE LAST HOUSE HAS A DOUBLE DOOR ON IT.
I'M GOING TO SEW A COUPLE OF WINDOWS, BUT I THINK THE SECRET IN PIECING THIS TOGETHER IS TO GET YOUR THREE INDIVIDUAL PANELS CONSTRUCTED.
I'M GOING TO MOVE THIS OVER A LITTLE BIT, AND YOU CAN SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
AND I WOULD ONCE AGAIN USE YOUR FACTORY SETUP TO GO AHEAD AND SEW YOUR BLOCKS TOGETHER.
IT DOESN'T HURT IF YOU SEW A WINDOW FROM ONE HOUSE AND THEN COME OVER AND PICK UP ANOTHER LONG WINDOW FROM ANOTHER HOUSE.
THAT WAY, YOU CAN JUST CONTINUE YOUR SEWING UNTIL YOU HAVE ALL YOUR PIECES TOGETHER.
IT DOES TAKE TIME TO DO THIS, BUT ONCE YOU GET YOUR LONG SEGMENTS DONE, THEN IT'S JUST A MATTER OF ADDING YOUR SKY AND YOUR ROOFTOPS TO THE OUTSIDE.
AND OF COURSE, CLIPPING APART WOULD GET YOUR WHOLE HOUSE CONSTRUCTED.
AS FAR AS QUILTING THIS, I PLAN ON USING JUST STRAIGHT LINES GOING AT ANGLES-- IN OTHER WORDS, TO GO AGAINST THE LINE OF THE ELONGATED HOUSE.
THE SKY: YOU MIGHT EVEN PUT A CLOUD OR MAYBE A SUN IN THE BACK OF THAT.
NOW, I THINK IT'S SO IMPORTANT, WHEN YOU GET YOUR QUILT DONE, TO REMEMBER TO SIGN YOUR QUILT.
WITH EMBROIDERY THREAD OR A SINGLE STRAND OF QUILTING THREAD, USE EITHER A STEM STITCH OR A BUTTONHOLE STITCH AND AT LEAST PUT YOUR INITIALS AND THE DATE THAT YOU HAVE FINISHED YOUR QUILT.
ALONG WITH THAT, IF YOU WANT TO SAVE A LOT OF THE THOUGHTS THAT YOU HAD IN MAKING THE QUILT, MAYBE THE STORY BEHIND YOUR QUILT, YOU MIGHT WANT TO TAKE A PIECE OF MUSLIN OR CLOTH AND SLIP IT INTO THE TYPEWRITER AND WRITE A LITTLE SAYING, WHO THE QUILT--WHO YOU WANT THE QUILT TO GO TO, HOW LONG IT TOOK YOU TO MAKE THE QUILT, AND ANYTHING ELSE OF PARTICULAR INTEREST.
WHEN YOU GET THAT DONE, YOU'RE GOING TO WANT TO MAKE A SOFT FRAME TO PUT IT INTO.
AND I LIKE THIS PROJECT BECAUSE IT'S A NONGLUE PROJECT.
YOU DON'T-- THERE'S NO GLUE INVOLVED IN IT.
YOU NEED SOME BAINBRIDGE BOARD, AND THAT'S A VERY STURDY POSTER BOARD YOU WOULD GET AT AN OFFICE SUPPLY SHOP.
YOU NEED TO CUT AN OUTSIDE PIECE THAT WOULD BE 10 INCHES ACROSS BY 8 INCHES DOWN.
THE OPENING INSIDE WOULD BE 6 INCHES LONG AND 4 INCHES WIDE, SO THAT YOU'RE DEALING WITH A 2-INCH BAND FOR YOUR BAINBRIDGE BOARD.
THEN IF YOU WANT IT PUFFY-- AND I THINK THAT'S NICE TO CONTINUE YOUR BATTING AND YOUR QUILTING THEME-- CUT A PIECE OF BATTING THE SAME SIZE.
OF COURSE, ELIMINATE YOUR OPENING.
THEN YOU'RE GOING TO CUT YOUR FABRIC FOR THE FRONT PART OF YOUR BORDER.
AND THE SIZE FOR YOUR BORDER PIECES WOULD BE TO CUT TWO THAT ARE 3 INCHES WIDE BY 9 AND TWO THAT ARE 3 INCHES WIDE BY 11 INCHES LONG.
NOW, THIS COULD BE A PIECED, COULD BE CRAZY PATCH, COULD BE LONG ROWS.
IN THE CASE OF THE SPINNING SPOOLS, I'M SIMPLY GOING TO USE THE FOUR COLORS OF THE TRAPEZOID THAT WENT AROUND THAT CENTER MEDALLION.
GO AHEAD AND MITER THOSE CORNERS ALL THE WAY OUT.
ONCE YOU'VE MITERED THOSE, THEN TAKE THE BACKING OR A SOLID PIECE OF FABRIC AND PUT THE TWO RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER.
MACHINE STITCH 1/4 INCH, THAT ENTIRE OPENING.
NOW, DO NOT GO ALL THE WAY OVER THAT SEAM ALLOWANCE.
STOP AND BACKSTITCH.
THEN TAKE YOUR SCISSORS.
AND YOU WANT TO ELIMINATE THAT ENTIRE OPENING.
COME ALL THE WAY DOWN AND JUST-- I'VE GOT IT PARTIALLY CUT, SO I WOULD ELIMINATE THAT OPENING.
AND ALSO, CLIP YOUR CORNERS.
COME ALL THE WAY OUT.
GO RIGHT DOWN TO WHERE YOU BACKSTITCHED.
AND I THINK YOU'RE GOING TO LIKE THIS, BECAUSE IT'S GOING TO-- I'VE CUT THE OTHER TWO.
THEN WHAT HAPPENS: ON THE FRONT SIDE, POSITION YOUR BATTING.
PLACE THIS RIGHT ON TOP.
AND THEN THIS PULLS ALL THE WAY THROUGH AND GOES AROUND TO THE BACK SIDE.
AND WHAT HAPPENS IS, YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT GLUING THAT UNDERNEATH SIDE.
AND THIS REACHES ALL THE WAY UP TO THE TOP.
AND WITH A PIN-- I WOULD TAKE A PIN AND PLACE IT HERE.
AND THEN, YOU SEE, YOU JUST KEEP PULLING THAT ALL THE WAY BACK, ALL THE WAY.
AND THEN I CUT ANOTHER PIECE.
I'M GOING TO SIMPLY GET IT PINNED IN PLACE, BUT YOU'D WANT TO WORK IT WITH YOUR FINGERS AND REALLY GET IT POSITIONED CORRECTLY.
AND IT DOES TAKE SOME MANEUVERING, BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO GET THIS DOWN FLAT, THIS PULLED ALL THE WAY OUT.
BUT I THINK YOU'RE GOING TO LIKE THE SMOOTHNESS THAT HAPPENS ONCE YOU'VE WORKED WITH THAT.
WHEN THAT IS ALL SMOOTH, THEN YOU CAN CUT ANOTHER PIECE OF BAINBRIDGE BOARD, PUT THAT AS THE BACKING AND THAT ON TOP.
LEAVE AN OPENING.
AND THEN WHAT I DO, EITHER BY MACHINE OR BY HAND-- REMEMBER YOU HAVE THIS EXTENSION ALL THE WAY OUT-- TURN THIS OVER AND SLIP-STITCH THAT IN PLACE OR EVEN USE A DECORATIVE STITCH ON YOUR MACHINE.
AND THAT WOULD GIVE YOU A NICE, SOFT FRAME TO WORK WITH.
WE INTERRUPT THIS PROGRAM FOR A VERY SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT.
SEVERAL MONTHS HAVE PASSED, AND WE HAVE HAD A CHANCE TO FINISH SOME QUILTS.
YOU REMEMBER SHIRLEY'S SAMPLER.
ALL COMPLETED.
THE CENTER PORTION WAS BASED ON THE NORTH CAROLINA LILY PATTERN.
AND THEN THE SAMPLER BLOCKS FORM RECTANGLES ALL THE WAY AROUND THE OUTSIDE.
SHE DID QUILT THOSE IN LONG RECTANGLES ONCE THE SQUARES WERE JOINED AND THEN ADDED THEM TO THE CENTER PORTION.
AND NOW WE HAVE A CHANCE TO SEE THE SPINNING SPOOLS QUILT ALL COMPLETED.
TAKING A CLOSER LOOK AT OUR SPINNING SPOOLS QUILT, LET'S RECALL THAT THE CENTER PORTION WAS COMPOSED OF FOUR 12-INCH BLOCKS IN THE SPOOL PATTERN.
ISN'T IT NICE TO HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF A POSITIVE/NEGATIVE APPROACH TO THIS?
WHEN THE TRAPEZOIDS ARE DARK, LOOK HOW IT'S A PINWHEEL PATTERN.
AND THEN WHEN THE TRAPEZOIDS ARE LIGHT, WE DEVELOP OUR SPOOL PATTERN.
GOING UP TO ONE CORNER OF THE QUILT, WE'RE GOING TO JUST REFRESH OUR MEMORY AND NAME EACH BLOCK.
LOTTIE'S LILY BLOCK, WHICH WAS BASED ON AN OLD QUILT PATTERN COMPOSED OF JUST SQUARES AND TRIANGLES.
THE SHADOW DANCE BLOCK IS VERY MUCH AKIN TO OUR LOG CABIN BLOCK.
BUT THIS TIME, WE START WITH TRIANGLES AND ADD OUR ONE-INCH STRIP TO TRIANGLES.
BRICK WALK IS THE PATTERN NAME FOR THIS BLOCK.
WOULDN'T IT BE NICE TO JUST CONTINUE THIS PATTERN FOR A STRIP QUILT?
NOTICE HOW THE BOWL BASKET BLOCK IS SET ON THE QUILT SO THAT WHEN IT'S ON THE BED, IT WILL BE SEEN PROPERLY.
