rootle is available to stream on pbs.org and the free PBS App, available on iPhone, Apple TV, Android TV, Android smartphones, Amazon Fire TV, Amazon Fire Tablet, Roku, Samsung Smart TV, and Vizio.
- Flowers, trees, even fruits and vegetables need the right nutrients to grow, just like us.
Some of these nutrients the plants need include acids and bases.
Let's ask some plant experts.
How do you make sure the soil is acidic?
- Great question.
We test the soil pH.
pH is a scale that measures how much acid or base is in something.
- Vinegar, it has a pH balance of about 2.
Baking soda has a pH balance of 9.
Hydrangeas, they need a pH level between 5.5 and 6.5.
Hydrangeas are naturally pink, but if we add more acid to the soil, the flowers will turn blue.
Plants like blueberries, azaleas, magnolias and hydrangeas all grow the best in acidic soil.
