I was just thinking about how some of the most fearless pioneers were pilots!

They wanted to fly and weren't afraid to be up in the sky, doing things that had never been done before!

They're my heroes!

Without them, where would we be today?

My name is Mr.

Antonio, and I'm just admiring the art of Leonardo da Vinci.

He was an important artist that painted what's probably the most famous painting ever!

It's called the "Mona Lisa."

And even though da Vinci is best known as an artist, he was also fascinated with flight and was a very important inventor and engineer, way ahead of his time.

Da Vinci was like the Wright Brothers.

They were also engineers and important inventors, but the Wright Brothers were focused on the dream of flying machines, and invented the airplane!

And, if there's one thing that all great inventors and engineers have in common is that if their ideas don't work the first time, they don't give up.

To achieve great things, you have to try, try and try again until you succeed.

And, that's what we're going to learn more about in the book that we're reading today.

"The Engineering Design Process: How the Wright Brothers Learned to Fly".

Written by Kathryn Maximov and illustrated by Eddie Delaney.

(reading the book) "Engineers design and build "solutions to problems.

"They follow a process to test and improve "until they find the best solution.

"The steps they follow "are called the Engineering Design Process.

"Step one: Define the problem.

"The Wright Brothers noticed that the early flying machines "were difficult to control.

"The Wright Brothers defined the problem: "People in flying machines need better controls "so that they don't crash.

"Step two: Do background research.

"The Wright Brothers spent a lot of time "doing research about flying.

"They carefully observed the bodies, wings, "and behavior of birds in flight.

"Step three: Brainstorm and plan.

"The Wright Brothers brainstormed "that a pilot could control an aircraft "the same way a bicyclist controls his bike.

"Step four: Make a prototype.

"The Wright Brothers built a simple glider prototype.

"A prototype is a simple working solution that can be tested.

"Their first idea was wrong.

But they did not give up.

"Step five: Test and improve.

"For two years, the Wright Brothers continued to experiment "and build new prototypes.

"On December 17th, 1903, "the Wright Brothers were the first "to fly a machine controlled by a pilot "and propelled by a motor.

"Conclusion: "Engineers find the best solutions to problems "by following "the Engineering Design Process.

"The Wright Brothers learned new things "by testing and failing over and over again.

"They learned from each failure and improved their invention.

"Today, millions of people fly on airplanes every day "because the Wright Brothers never gave up."

Wow!

Thank you, Wright Brothers!

You really changed how we travel.

And if you've ever been on an airplane, it's partly because of the early work they did.

The Engineering Design Process helped to guide their experimenting.

It's a tool everyone can use to solve problems.

So, the next time you have a problem to solve, ask yourself these questions: What is the problem?

Who needs the problem solved?

And, why is the problem important to solve?

And if you do that and you don't give up, you're going to have a lot of success and solve a lot of problems.

(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) - [Barry] Guess this love for flying is catching on!

So many students were inspired by the story of the Wright Brothers that a lot of them made paper airplanes, too!

I've seen about 20 of those things flying past my noggin today!

(whistling sounds) (chuckles) Whoa!

Hold on!

(whistling sounds) Uh, this is getting out of hand!

Let's see if we can sort this out.

Ah!

I know.

(radio static) Captain Barry to traffic control.

Come in?

(traffic control speaking gibberish) Just wanna let you guys know that there are way too many airplanes in the air!

(groans) Red plane!

No wait!

Uh, blue plane!

Wait!

Augh?!

I need to figure this out and do some problem solving.

While you fly back over to Mr.

Antonio's class, I'm gonna work on getting these planes organized.

Come on, let's go!

(bell ringing) (playful horn honking) - [Mr.

Antonio] I have a fun surprise for you today!

We're going to find out what it's like to fly an airplane!

I know, huh?

That's pretty amazing!

We're going to go on a flight simulator.

A flight simulator is a way for people who love aviation to feel and experience what it's like to fly a plane.

Come on, let's go!

(whoosh!)

(plane engine humming) Wow.

This is amazing!

We sure are flying high!

♪ And, hey!

There's my house!

♪ And, that's our school!

Hey, look at that!

(plane engine humming) And, check out those clouds.

That one sort of looks like a cat.

And, there goes some birds.

(birds squawking) And, there goes Barry?

I must be seeing things.

Oh, check out those mountains!

They're beautiful.

(plane engine humming) This is really incredible.

Time to land!

(plane engine humming) (plop!)

Whoa!

That was a wild ride.

And besides being fun, flight simulators help train pilots to do their job.

It's a way to practice flying different types of airplanes, all while staying safely on the ground.

(bell ringing) Oh, that's Barry.

Wonder how he's doing with his air traffic situation!

(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) - Red paper airplane, you're cleared for takeoff.

(whistling sounds) Roger, blue plane!

You're clear to land on runway one-niner.

(whistling sounds) Orange plane, keep your holding pattern.

Hey!

(laughs) This problem solving process really works!

I just thought about how I direct students to their classes every day, and I applied that method to directing the paper plane traffic.

I'm not just Captain Barry today, I'm Engineer Barry, at your service!

And, you're cleared for takeoff.

Back to class to review what we learned on this "uplifting" day!

(bell ringing) (playful horn honking) - [Mr.

Antonio] Today, we learned a lot about the design process and the history of airplanes in the book we read about the Wright Brothers.

"On December 17th, 1903, "the Wright Brothers were the first to fly a machine "controlled by a pilot and propelled by a motor."

And, how about that little trip we took on the flight simulator?

There's my house!

(plane engine humming) And, that's our school!

And, Barry?

(chuckles) Well, he also learned how to navigate in the busy world of aviation.

- Red paper airplane, you're cleared for take off.

(whistling sounds) Roger, blue plane.

You're clear to land on runway one-niner.

- The truth is, we should all dream big, just like Leonardo da Vinci when he painted the Mona Lisa or when he dreamed about humans flying.

And, the Wright Brothers who also wanted to fly.

They developed and designed the airplane and changed the way the world travels.

Just like the Wright Brothers did, any one of you can invent the next big thing that will change the world.

Just remember to keep trying and don't give up.
