Today's career spotlight is on the fast-paced job of a licensed practical nurse.
(air whooshing) (air whooshing) - The minute I walked in this clinic, I felt like, "I'm home."
(door beeping) (light music) Good morning.
I love my job.
I am Sandie Basta, nurse extraordinaire.
(laughing) (air whooshing) (light music continues) When you're in nursing, there's never a job that is not my responsibility.
I still work on the floor, even though I am in the nurse team lead, nurse educator capacity right now.
As a team, we make rounds throughout the clinic several times a day.
We check in with our providers.
Good morning, Jennifer.
You do become part of your patients' lives.
Your grandbabies.
- Oh my god, they're beautiful.
- You're only seeing those patients for a very short- Perfect.
Interaction.
They need to be your priority right then and there.
You need to interact with them on their level.
- This has been- - Wonderful.
- Thank you, it was perfect, thank you so much.
(air whooshing) - The largest misconception with nursing is that you have to work every other weekend, you have to work every other holiday.
(light music) I didn't wanna put my children in daycare.
So nursing was the career that actually helped me to stay at home with my children, and I could work on the weekends when my husband was home.
I think nursing is the career that really afforded myself that opportunity.
(air whooshing) (light music continues) I've been in one realm of nursing pretty much my entire life.
I started off as a certified nurse's aide back in 1983.
Sometimes your personal life takes you in a different path, and it detoured me and I put my nursing career, furthering my nursing education, put that on hold.
Fast forward, here I am, I'm telling my kids, "You gotta do your homework.
You have to finish things.
You have to complete what you started."
And I wasn't living that in my life.
And I decided, well, I'm gonna go back to nursing school.
(air whooshing) (light music continues) So it's an 18-month program that I went for.
And I went up to CTC, and I got my LPN.
And I never looked back.
(air whooshing) (light music continues) You are never too late to pick up something new and try a different path.
Reeducate them, make sure- There is a nursing shortage.
The more people that I can shout from the rooftops on how nursing has really been a wonderful career for me, all the better.
Good morning.
- How are you?
- Good, how are you?
- Good.
- Right in here, my dear.
You never know what's going on in somebody else's life.
Make a lasting impression.
Be that reason for that person to say, "Somebody cares."
Perfect.
That's actually really good.
- [Patient] It's probably extra good today.
