>> Tim: It's college wrestling.
Welcome to Cedar Rapids for our second dual of the season as American Rivers Conference rivals Loras College of Dubuque face off against Coe College on Coe's home mat.
Hello, everyone, I'm Tim Johnson along with legendary coach Jim Miller, and Jim, when Loras and Coe get together, it always seems to go right down to the end.
>> Jim: Yeah, it's cold outside.
I think we're going to get hot matches in here tonight.
Let's go.
>> Tim: And it's going to heat up fast.
Coe comes out of gate with a couple of favorites and then, you know, Loras in the middle.
Let's take a look at the -- tonight's matchups.
We start at 125, Fiser versus one of the Parke brothers and then Evans versus the other Parke brother.
Crawford versus Kurtz, Fiser versus Grimm and either Kinkaid or Catour versus Ty Koedam.
How about the second half?
>> Jim: Bohren versus Scranton, Gnida versus Richardson, Barker versus Voss, Watson versus Arsenault, and Clark versus Dan I have.
>> Tim: And now for the national anthem sung by the Coe College choir.
>> At this time we request you stand and remove your caps as we hon four our great nation with the singing of our national anthem, presented by the Coe College choir under the direction of Luke Lovegood.
>>OH, SAY, CAN YOU SEE, BY THE dawn's early light, What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
>> We will be starting tonight's meet at 125 pounds.
>> Tim: Back at the Kohawk arena, Tim Johnson along with Jim Miller.
And Jim, the series has been close in the last, especially in the last ten years.
>> Jim: Yeah, and the Coe pulled it out 21-19 last year, but think it's 6-4 Loras the last ten matches.
But this is always a good one.
So -- and I know you got these coaches fire up to come in and put on a good show.
Think we're going to have a good meet.
Kurt Frost, veteran referee.
>> Tim: One of the best officials in the nation.
He does all levels of wrestling, and now we get ready at 125 pounds.
Connor Fiser, a freshman, report of 9-6 going up against Brayden Parke, another freshman.
16-2, having a great start.
Out of lin mar high school, where he was a two-time Iowa state placer.
Third in '22 and second in '23.
>> Jim: We got two good freshmen here.
Both did well in high school.
Parke really typically starts fast, aggressive.
>> Tim: Yeah, really importantfor Fiser to not have his back to the edge there.
And that's hard to do when getting kind of bull rushed.
>> Jim: Could get a call here.
>> Tim: Action back to the center, and Brayden Parke, a freshman.
His only two losses come to the same wrestler, number 4, Gavin Bradley out of castleton.
Otherwise, a clean slate.
What a great start.
His older brother Bryce wrestles at 143 for Coe.
>> Jim: Nice effort by Fiser.
Parke sneaks in if he gets him down to the mat.
He's got a leg in.
Close to being off, but they're not.
>> Tim: Tough call.
I don't think we're going to get one.
>> Jim: I think that's good by him.
Because of the way that Fiser had the arm, he said no, and then it proved out.
He almost got takedown and back points, Fiser did.
Which would have been huge for the Duhawks.
>> Jim: Oh man, almost a cradle hooked up, a single.
Needs to come up with it.
Needs to come up, take his time, pull him in the middle of the mat.
Now try to go for it too early.
Might lose it now.
Fiser doing a nice job doing the splits on the edge.
>> Tim: There's the stall from Kurt Frost.
He calls it backing out.
That's just an automatic call.
>> Jim: Parke's been the aggressor here.
By Parke.
>> Tim: One of my all-time favorite coaches was there for a long time, hall of fame coach, and then west crease and a Coe college graduate.
>> Jim: Fiser got in a nice shot.
Park kind of trying to go behind.
But Fiser has his hands locked.
Going to be tough to break that.
>> Tim: Good fight by Fiser.
>> Jim: A duck, fireman action, hasn't been able to finish.
49 seconds, still no score.
>> Tim: Brayden Parke, first of two Parke brothers.
>> Jim: Nice single by Fiser.
>> Tim: What's he need to do?
>> Jim: He needs to turn the corner.
Makes it tougher.
We'll see if Fiser can get him up to his feet.
But no, he really had a tight shin whizzer there.
And kind of interesting, both these guys got a brother in this meet.
>> Tim: Yeah, two apiece on each of these teams.
I mentioned from Lynn Mar high school.
Doug Streicher for so many years.
>> Jim: Nice job by Fiser.
Circled him in and took a shot on the edge.
Has his leg lifted up, but Parke kind of sitting around and almost, almost scores at the end.
>> Is that on?
Choice, period.
>> Tim: But it's 0-0 after one.
And Parke gets his choice.
>> Jim: You'd have to say that's advantage for Connor Fiser.
>> Tim: 0-0, fought really hard there, lot of shots.
>> Jim: Did get a stall call, but no points.
Gives Parke an escape.
Fiser's got to be careful, he's been called for stalling.
He does take a nice shot.
>> Tim: Very nice job.
>> Jim: Nice limp arm on the edge and sneaks in a takedown.
That was a big takedown for Chase Fiser.
>> Tim: It's interesting, Jim, you coach for so many years.
Parke had so many shots, and sometimes it kind of gets in your head and you get frustrated and get a little sloppy.
>> Jim: Now he's close to scoring.
Trying to do the splits.
He's got a really good flexibility there on the edge.
Parke doing a good job bringing it up.
He needs to bring him back in.
>> Tim: A lot further than he is.
>> Jim: Yeah A lot further.
>> Tim: This is what you're supposed to be doing.
Great splits by Connor Fiser.
>> Tim: He's close there, looking for that back ankle.
>> Jim: Fiser needs to bring him in again.
He gets a stall call.
>> Tim: So a stall call against Fiser.
Parke from Coe now.
3-3.
>> Jim: Parke's been aggressive.
Sneaky shot.
Nice high crotch by Connor Fiser.
Parke trying to sit around, but he's got him in trouble.
Fiser's got a big advantage here.
He needs to lift up the leg if you can, but Parke really trying to elevate.
Fiser doing a nice job, he gets his head, trying to get his head free.
>> Tim: Ten seconds left.
>> Jim: Needs to get his left arm out, nothing yet.
Has him in trouble, danger.
Looks like -- >> Tim: Three points with one second left on the clock.
A big takedown for the Duhawk Connor Fiser out in front 6-3 going into the third period.
We're at 125 pounds.
Exciting first match.
There's John Oostendorp, 24 years at Coe, two-time all American for coach Gable at Iowa back in the '90s.
>> Jim: Man, Fiser has snuck in two key takedowns in this match.
Now we've got third period, 6-3.
>> Tim: Going to be 7-3.
>> Jim: 7-3.
>> Tim: Park should have probably shot it a little harder off the mat there.
>> Jim: Brayden Parke down 7-3.
No riding time.
>> Tim: Two freshmen going after it.
>> Jim: Really nice shot by Fiser in deep.
But Parke has stopped him.
But you know what, the clock's in Connor Fiser's favor here.
>> Tim: This would be a huge win to get out of the gate with a win at 125, not being the favorite for the Duhawks.
He's out in front.
Loras College wrestlers out in front 7-3.
>> Jim: Another good shot by Fiser.
Close to another takedown.
>> Tim: The third takedown of the match.
Really doing a nice job lowering his level and driving in.
>> Jim: Strategic takedowns, Connor Fiser, 10-3.
Now, of course, Loras coach is thinking let's get a major here.
>> Tim: And one point for Coe's Brayden, because he's doing what you thought.
>> Jim: Came back, limp arm down, but Parke came back with a wizard to save himself on that takedown.
Oh my, he's got him tight.
Oh my goodness.
>> Tim: There's the three points.
Some tremendous awareness by Fiser.
>> Jim: Yeah, doing a great job.
13-4.
>> Still red.
>> Jim: Yeah, this is a surprise, good surprise for Loras Duhawks starting out the meet with a -- not just a win, a dominant win.
20 seconds left.
Parke to his feet.
Does get a point.
13-5.
>> Tim: Right now this is the major.
And if he can hold off Parke.
Whoa, drives in.
>> Jim: Another takedown.
>> Tim: That's five takedowns, and locked hands, one appointment.
>> Jim: It's not going to matter.
>> Tim: It's not going to matter.
>> Jim: Tremendous start.
>> Tim: What an effort by Connor Fiser, the freshman from Loras goes to 10-6 and gives his team a 4-0 lead out of the gate.
>> Jim: Here comes a replay.
Almost catches Parke on his back.
But Connor Fiser, 16-6, dominant win to start the meet for Loras.
>> Tim: Well there's -- I mean, you can't make up for that kind of momentum.
That's what you're looking for from 125.
>> Jim: Isn't that the truth?
>> Tim: Aiden Evans from fifth year.
He's an engineering student out of Loras.
Already has a job as an engineer as he leaves school from Bettendorf going up against Bryce Parke, the brother of Brayden, for your starter for Coe.
Two-time NCAA national qualifier, and he's got a job to do right here.
>> Jim: He does, he needs to get Coe back into this, and he's going right to work.
Has Evans in trouble here.
There's the takedown.
>> Tim: Got right after it.
Bryce Parke, kind of fired up after his brother went down in defeat in the first match.
He's out in front now, 3-0.
He's a senior, 12-4 record.
And really getting after it.
>> Jim: Four-year starter, he's wrestled Evans a number of times.
Hasn't ever lost to him.
But a number of close matches they've had along the way.
>> Tim: Also a graduate of Linn Mar.
The cohead coaches are both Coe alums.
>> Jim: Think historywise, Evans really needs to get out.
Parke has really been tough on top.
>> Ankle, one, two.
>> Tim: That's what Evans needs to do.
>> Jim: He needs to put it together, a couple moves together, get to his feet, get out.
I tell you, Parke is really tough here on top.
>> Ankle, one, two.
>> Jim: Off the edge.
>> Cover.
>> Jim: We'll see if Aiden can explode out.
Parke tough on top.
He's just deep waist.
>> Tim: Obviously building up a lot of riding time.
And there it is.
A riding time over a minute, 1:20.
>> Action, guys.
>> Jim: Evans got to get to his base.
That's one of the things the officials will look for.
If you can't get to your base, might get called for stalling here.
But a tight, deep waist by Parke.
There's the stall call.
>> Tim: Yeah, it's not a good look when you're on your belly.
>> Jim: No, you've got to be able to get to your base for sure.
>> Tim: What's he need to do underneath there?
>> Jim: Just what he did.
Trying to get something going.
Kept his base.
Trying to wing down, roll, but he needs to get to his feet.
Parke has just been dominant when he hasn't -- when he's not trying to get to his feet.
Over two minutes riding time.
This also takes a lot out of you when you get rode that hard.
You know, this is just the first period.
>> Tim: Yeah, there's a lot of pressure being put on Evans by Parke.
He's just got a, you know, he's out on his toes, he's pressing forward, got Evans flat on his chest.
Not going anywhere and he's already got a stall call.
Going to the end of the first period.
Score is 3-0.
>> Jim: And right here, if you're Coe, you're thinking, we got major, we need to get a major right here.
And you know, basically 3-0 with already two minutes riding time, they're going on their feet.
Don't blame Evans, this is probably best chance to score is getting back to his feet.
But Parke is really aggressive.
Evans, nice job.
Does get in on the single.
Parke trying to scoot around.
Does get locked up in the crotch.
Oh man.
Great job by Parke.
Evans had the advantage.
>> Tim: So take -- early takedown, then an escape in the second period, and now another takedown for the Kohawk.
>> Jim: 6-0.
>> Action, guys.
>> Jim: Evans got to get to his base or he's going to get another stall call.
>> Get him a pillow.
>> Red.
>> Jim: There's the other -- there's the next stall call.
>> Tim: So now we're up to seven.
Right now he's got a major.
This is where, you know, you keep working him and you haven't had any problem taking him down.
>> Jim: Right now you decide.
You going to go neutral and try to build the lead?
>> Tim: And he just got called for stalling on top.
>> Jim: He did, he did, so he got 3:24 riding time already.
Evans does get to his tripod.
Does get to his feet.
Nice mat return by Parke.
>> Tim: Oh, that brought the little noise from the crowd.
Really nice crowd behind us, Jim.
>> Jim: Yeah, Evans trying to hit his switch.
Parke doing a nice job countering it.
30 seconds left.
Second period.
The weather, man, it was cold, but maybe affected a little bit the crowd.
But yeah, we do got a lot of people.
>> Tim: It's packed behind us.
>> Jim: Yeah.
>> Tim: Half the gymnasium packed, and it's when you come out and it's minus two degrees outside, that's a faithful wrestling fan.
>> Jim: Wrestling people don't care about that, man.
They come out anyway.
It's like the end of the second period, 7-0.
Parke over four minutes riding time.
>> Tim: Andy and Carrie, the father and mother of Brayden and Bryce, feel better than they did a few minutes ago, because older brother is taking care of business here.
>> Jim: So let's see what Evans wants to do here.
>> Tim: Caution.
Yep, caution on red.
>> Jim: Evans jumped the gun a little bit.
But hey.
>> Tim: Yeah, don't you agree, get that first caution?
>> Jim: Yeah, that's right.
>> Tim: Try to get an advantage, you know.
>> Jim: Evans has been able to get to his legs.
Just hasn't been able to finish.
>> Tim: Evans out of Bettendorf.
Coaches Dan knight.
Frank freeman started thatprogram.
Now for the last couple of decades Dan Knight leading that program A four-time state champion.
And then, of course, Mark, former Hawkeye great.
>> Jim: Two on one, Parke needs to get his left hand behind Evans.
And there he does.
There's a takedown.
Now it's 11-0.
I'm sure they're looking, hey, right now it's really 12 with riding time.
>> Tim: So he'd need either two takedowns or just one three-point turn.
>> Jim: Well, he hasn't been able to turn him yet, even close, so I'm guessing they're going to cut him.
>> Tim: Jimmy Gotto, longtime stability of John Oostendorp on the side, encouraging his wrestler.
Here's the crowd.
Nice boisterous crowd behind us.
Nice turnout by the students and local community.
Some people that have come up, said hi to us.
We know, you know, hall of fame coach Dick Briggs, longtime coach in the crowd.
Nick Hobbs, two-time all American for Coe.
>> Jim: You know we actually wrestled, you know that, don't you?
>> Tim: You and Nick?
>> Jim: My first match.
>> Tim: He and Bob, commissioner of the big 12, tremendous supporter of wrestling.
Teammates at Moorhead State.
>> Jim: That's right.
They came down to the west gym.
Here we go, 20 seconds left.
>> Tim: Got a major decision going that looks like what it's going to be.
And that'll match the major decision by the Duhawks in 125.
So if it stays like this after two matches, going to be 4-4.
And we got ourself a Loras/Coe.
>> Jim: Yes, we do.
Yes, we do, and -- Bryce Parke, man, pretty impressive match.
>> Tim: Very impressive.
So Bryce Parke the senior goes to 13-4.
Gets a much-needed win for the Kohawks.
And now it's 4-4, and we're going to get ready to go to 141.
>> Jim: Watch this, he sneaks his leg out and comes behind for an easy takedown.
And here we go, 141.
>> Tim: Kolten Crawford out of union port city Dysart.
And he's 8-3.
Junior, and he's going up against the freshman, Kael Kurtz, 10-5.
His dad, Marcus Kurtz, graduated from Coe in 1989.
A volunteer assistant wrestling coach at Coe for more than 15 years.
And he was, you know, an all American for the Kohawks.
And Kael Kurtz, the freshman went to -- high.
Was a four-time Iowa state planks winner, also going to play baseball at Coe.
Real athletic.
>> Jim: Wow, when you coach as long as I coached 37 years, you got a lot of coaches out there in this match.
Both these guys' high school coaches, Cory Connell at Iowa city high, Kurtz and Bob mailer at union.
Both great wrestlers for us.
National champ, Cory Connell runner-up.
Cory Connell's here, actually, because -- and you know what, he coached coach glosser at Loras.
Kael Kurtz trying to score, but oh my goodness, Crawford sneaks in.
>> Tim: Leg pass.
>> Jim: Does the leg pass.
Man, I'm glad that wasn't going on when we were wrestling.
>> Tim: Did you ever think about diving through?
>> Jim: Heck no.
>> Tim: You were either down or you weren't.
There's coach Jeren Glosser, former Iowa hawkeye, eddyville.
Wapello, Minneapolis, eddyville, and you're right, Jeren Glosser was coached by Cory.
>> Jim: Cory Connell, yeah.
That was before before he went to Iowa City high to coach.
Then he coached Kael Kurtz and many others.
>> Tim: Of course, in my day, Mike Mc-- is it's interesting, unstoppable came out last week.
That's the story of my former broadcast partner, Anthony Robles.
And you know, here's the conference standings right here.
Wartburg, of course, out in front.
Coe undefeated.
And Loras, 1-1.
But Matt, of course, is in a movie because that's who Anthony Robles beat this the finals.
He's played by Johnny, a former Ohio state -- >> Jim: I heard nothing but good things.
>> Tim: Tremendous young man, motivational speaker now, but how'd we get there from eddyville, you know?
>> Jim: Nice shot by Kurtz, well defended by Crawford.
Begin, Kurtz again, three shots right there.
And now Crawford comes back with one.
>> Tim: Good fight by Kolten Crawford.
>> Jim: Yeah, got some good scrapping going on, even though no score yet.
>> Tim: You know, one thing I like about Iowa PBS, you know, Iowa loves their wrestling, but longtime coach at union, La Porte, was Dick.
He was just inducted into the knights hall of fame.
He had a long career there.
>> Jim: He sure did.
>> Tim: Congratulations to that induction and recognition for the coach's longtime dedication to the sport.
Kolten Crawford, a four-year program guy.
He's been behind Schropp.
Schropp's injured.
Stepping in and, you know, next man up.
>> Jim: Yeah, he's done a good job.
8-3 record right now.
>> Tim: Yep.
>> Jim: Both guys got defense.
Neither one can really get to the leg to give themselveses a chance to score.
20 seconds to go.
First period.
>> Tim: He's kind of had the feeling that if Crawford doesn't -- oh, nice side by there.
That's three points.
Tremendous slide by.
Knows where he is.
>> Jim: I tell you what, Loras has snuck in a lot of takedowns to end the periods.
>> Tim: They have come to grapple.
>> Jim: That's a big takedown.
Two seconds left.
Don't have time to get anything back.
>> Tim: Well, the keys to the dual, Jim, you were thinking about them.
Right now Loras has done something about it.
>> Jim: Yeah, they need to get a couple wins here in the first half, because they're very strong in the middle.
They got three all Americans in the middle.
Coe has got a -- they got a, you know, they want to get out -- they want to win a couple more matches here early on.
>> Tim: Right now the Duhawks trying to turn the tables, flip the script.
>> Jim: I think the Kohawks favored on paper in the upperweights.
Here we got a 4-0 lead by Kolten Crawford of Loras.
But a takedown by Kurtz to get him right back in the match.
>> Tim: 1:20 left in the second period.
4-0 that score with the late takedown in the first period by Kolten Crawford.
Really nicely done.
Slide by executed well.
>> Jim: That was sweet.
>> Tim: He knew he was at the edge.
He got the ankles and secured the three points.
It was textbook.
>> Jim: Kurtz is kind of pushing in.
Shot by Crawford.
Really -- Kurtz has got a good hip pressure, got him -- he's got him in a situation where he can't pull it in, at least to this point.
Crawford trying to.
>> Tim: He's doing a nice job for being stretched out.
He's hanging on.
He's not just hanging on, he's pulling in like a tenacious dog.
He's saying I may not be where I want to, but I'm not going to give you anymore.
>> Jim: I ain't giving you nothing.
>> Tim: Taking this shot, not a bad thing.
If you're taking a shot and the opponent's not scoring, not a bad thing.
>> Jim: You love the body language of Kolten Crawford too.
Seems fresh and building confidence right now, like you said, 20 seconds left out front 4-0.
Now you're thinking strategically and navigating your match.
The best way to navigate a match at this level is keep your offense going, right?
>> Tim: It is.
And if Kurtz pushes in too much when he ties up to the head.
That slide by.
Just what you're saying right there, he's looking for that extra pressure, Crawford is.
Look at this crowd.
Nice crowd on a frigid night.
And the Iowa PBS number one foam fingers there.
Passed out to the crowd.
Love being back on Iowa PBS.
Next week it's the battle of the birds.
Your home territory, Jim.
>> Jim: That'll be a good one.
>> Tim: Right now that's a great start by Kolten Crawford.
Out in front 4-0.
>> Jim: Really is, and Kurtz has really got to get to his feet, get a score, and get a takedown if he's going to get himself back into this match.
>> Tim: There's escape.
>> Jim: 4-1, Kurtz needs to score.
Tell you what, Kurtz has taken a lot of shots, but he's just not penetrated enough to be effective trying to get a single or a double.
And Crawford has a lot to do with that.
He's staying low, his head's low.
Sometimes he's putting his hands on the mat.
>> Center.
>> Yes, good job.
>> Jim: Down on one knee.
>> Tim: A takedown would tie it.
>> Jim: That could -- >> Tim: Little slide action, elbow pass.
Nice fight by Kolten Crawford.
>> Jim: Yeah, he's not really giving him a chance here.
>> Tim: No.
>> Jim: 12 seconds.
Did get a stall call.
>> Tim: Now a takedown win.
>> Jim: Takedown would win the match.
Hasn't been able to get to him yet.
>> Tim: What do you got?
Better be something that works.
>> Jim: There's something.
Nothing going, good defense by Crawford, and he wins the match.
>> Tim: Two out of the first three, three points, and the Duhawks in front 7-4 after three matches, getting ready for 149 pounds now.
We go right into the brother of Chase Fiser, the brother of Connor who got the big win at 125.
>> Jim: A replay right on the edge.
Kurtz trying a shot.
But Crawford holding him off.
Wins the match, puts the Duhawks up 7-4 coming into 149.
>> Tim: Oh, I like Dresden Grimm already because that walkout song's from when I wrestled at Coe College.
Don't fear the reaper by blue oyster cult.
Now we're talking.
And so he does need to not fear anything as he goes out here.
Dresden Grimm out of auburn, Illinois.
Going up against another brother, brother of Connor Fiser, Chase Fiser.
14-3.
And he was a backup last year to Eric Kinkaid, an all American.
And he pushed him.
Coach said he pushed him hard.
Even to a point of having to wrestle off and just couldn't quite get in the lineup.
So it's Chase Fiser's time.
The sophomore, 14-4 record.
Two-year starter.
Last year at 141, now he's up to 149.
Graduated from Auburn, Illinois.
His dad, Matt, a coach at Auburn.
When he was a younger athlete he spoke about his involvement in FCA, and I was the Illinois FCA director.
And now here at Coe with a really important role right here.
You got to get back on the board.
Another victory for Coe if they're going to be where they want to be.
>> Jim: Yeah, for sure.
And you know, these Fiser boys, their dad Brian was one of my first recruits at wartburg.
Wrestling families, we keep talking about there's so many connections.
And also if we talk about the program, my god, they've done so well.
And rich powers is the superintendent.
>> Tim: I loved watching rich powers, the panther.
>> Jim: He was on the panther train.
>> Tim: Man.
>> Jim: Nice fireman try.
>> Tim: Yes, he comes around.
>> Jim: Oh man.
>> Tim: He had those elbows so tight.
>> Jim: He wasn't going to let go.
>> Tim: Dresden Grimm gets the first takedown for three.
Kohawk out in front.
>> Jim: Needs to get him down.
Needs to have a man return.
Could get called for a stall here.
Does get him off the mat.
>> Tim: He's going to call stalling for pushing off the mat, Grimm out in front but a stall call as he went out of bounds.
>> Jim: 39 seconds.
>> Tim: Grimm a three-time Illinois high school state -- >> Jim: Grimm cuts him.
3-1.
>> Tim: Little more length on Chase Fiser.
>> Jim: I mean even the records, Grimm 14-4, Fiser, 14-3.
Ten seconds.
First period.
>> Tim: Loras and Coe, and they're at that, you know -- >> Jim: We got a replay here, we'll see what we got.
>> Tim: Drops down with the -- >> Jim: Nice fireman, outside carry really.
Drives it all the way to a takedown.
That's where we're standing.
3-1.
>> Tim: Looking for the cross wrist.
>> Jim: He's good here.
>> Tim: Nice job of rolling through by Chase Fiser.
>> Jim: Nice mat return.
>> Tim: Good effort by both wrestlers.
>> Jim: Grimm's tough on top.
Almost -- when he had that hooked up, that could really blow this match out of whack if he can get some back points.
>> Tim: Fiser felt it coming rolled through.
Grimm likes that crab ride.
Got the half Nelson.
Two points reversal for Chase Fiser.
That knots the score at 3-3.
>> Jim: Fiser jumped out of his crotch, really.
I mean, he jumped outside and got a nice reversal.
And man, we got a match here.
>> Go get one.
>> Tim: And Chase Fiser cuts.
Drez Grimm, out in front 4-1 with that escape.
And they go to work on their feet again.
149 pounds.
Fourth match of the night between these American river conference rivals.
>> Jim: Grimm in.
Fiser doing a nice job squaring up.
>> Tim: That length.
Look at this.
If he can cut the corner there.
>> Jim: Oh, Grimm.
Holy cow.
>> Tim: If he can -- now it's close.
>> Jim: Woo, he's getting the pounce.
>> Tim: That was a game changer right there for Grimm.
Looked like Fiser might score, and Grimm does a somersault almost, jumps over to his back, so that's a six-point move.
Two points for reversal and then -- or with a takedown -- it was the takedown and the four point.
Fiser gets a reversal.
We're going to try to see a replay here.
>> Jim: That was some good action.
Actually, the official is going over to make sure we got the score right.
>> 4-3, you got to reverse, 11-5?
>> Tim: That was seven points.
>> Jim: Here we go, here's the seven-point move.
Fiser trying to go around.
And Grimm actually jumps over, somersault.
>> Tim: Catches him.
>> Jim: Catches him on his back.
>> Tim: Gets the takedown and four counts for a four-point near fall.
That's how that seven points came about.
He gets cut here, he gives the escape to start the third period because because of that seven-point move, the Duhawk Chase Fiser has got a big hill to climb.
>> Jim: It was almost like Feis ser going to take the lead and now we're up Grimm.
So now Fiser in underhooks, double underhooks.
>> Offense.
>> Jim: Grimm doing a good job just staying basic.
Fiser doing a good job, but Grimm sneaks in on a high crotch.
>> Tim: And they're out of bounds.
Any part of your body that's inbounds, you're still wrestling.
As soon as you go out of bounds or past the cylinder, as if there was an invisible vertical wall there, then you're out of bounds.
>> Jim: You know, another takedown by Grimm, it's major decision territory here.
If Fiser shoots in, Grimm with a shin whizzer.
>> Keep that legal.
>> Jim: Nice job, loop arm.
He gets the score.
Going to cut him right away.
>> Tim: A five-point lead by the Kohawk right now.
Less than a minute left in regulation.
>> Jim: Fiser's got some momentum here.
Another takedown.
He's right in there.
>> Tim: Keep the feet moving.
>> Jim: Stall call and a point.
13-9, a takedown to make it 13-12.
Grimm doing a better job here blocking, hipping out, staying square.
>> Tim: Now you've got to know you've got to eat that clock if you're Grimm.
>> Jim: Yep.
Fiser holding on.
Grimm does break it, but Fiser sits up.
>> Tim: Coming out the back door, what's he need to do, coach?
>> Jim: Well, he news to get his head out.
He needs to stay out of both legs.
He needs to get one side or the other.
And here he goes right here for a takedown.
>> Tim: And he's going to have to let him go.
>> Jim: Wow.
Fiser, 13-12, five seconds left.
Grimm ahead 14-12.
Oh my goodness.
>> Tim: Big sigh of relief by Grimm.
Coe gets on the board again.
Now it's back to all tied up 7-7 after four.
What a great match.
Lot of scoring.
>> Jim: Great effort by Fiser.
He got way behind there.
And comes storming back.
Just not -- kind of runs out of time X it's 14-12.
7-7, here we are, tied back up again.
>> Tim: Coach, we have seen some scoring.
That's whey love.
>> Jim: Yep.
>> Tim: These guys are going out and getting after it.
Now we go to 157.
>> Jim: We got Eric Kinkaid.
All American last year with Ty Koedam, sophomore, sergeant bluff Luton.
Freshman of the year last year in the conference.
>> Tim: Koedam coached by his dad, Clint.
>> Jim: All American.
>> Tim: Wrestled for coach al Baxter.
Now out in Virginia beach, retired.
And one of the great all-time coaches in high school and college in the state of Iowa.
And his protege, Clint Koedam, his son.
Two-year starter here at Coe.
And as you said, Jim, sergeant bluff Luton high school.
A three-time Iowa state place winner.
>> Jim: Tell you what, Kinkaid is dangerous, especially in like near cradle action.
He can pin you and has pinned a lot of people.
Turned matches around real quick.
Koedam trying to circle in.
>> Tim: Kinkaid, also an engineering student and academic all American.
His coach just says he's a jack of all trades.
>> Jim: Yeah, it's good to have a guy like that on the team.
Leader in a lot of ways.
>> Both guys in here, come on.
In here.
Fingers.
>> Tim: Oh, nice shot.
>> Jim: Nice shot.
>> Tim: And nice job by Kinkaid.
Hips down.
>> Jim: And here's where he's dangerous if he can break that grip he'll start to slide around.
>> Tim: Get that neck cradled.
Man, when you get the neck cradled -- the head freestylecoach for the United States freestyle team, national channel champion for Iowa, always says it's more about physics than horsepower when it comes down to the elite wrestlers.
The strategics and physics part of that cradled lockup is you got to know how to lock it up just right.
>> Jim: Nice shot by Kinkaid.
Dumps him down.
He's got Koedam in trouble, but Koedam's trying to sit around, locked up around the waist.
>> Tim: Comes out, couldn't hold him down.
Eric Kinkaid out with the three-point takedown to go out in front with 38 seconds left in the first period.
>> Jim: Leg Turk, which would put Koedam in trouble.
30 seconds left in the first.
Once you get under the neck here, elevate the leg, get under the neck, and take him to his back.
Koedam doing a good job so far trying to base out.
Tough position right here when you're underneath like that, like Koedam, but ten seconds left.
First period.
There comes the hand.
He's getting under the neck.
>> Tim: Good fight by Koedam there.
>> Jim: Yeah, good fight.
>> Tim: 3-0 and a ride to the end of the period.
That's the way you draw it out.
>> Jim: Kinkaid the first.
We'll see if Koedam goes down.
He does.
>> Tim: 40 seconds of riding time for Kinkaid after that takedown.
Out in front 3-0.
>> Jim: Koedam trying to clear those hips, come to his legs.
A return and immediately into the wrists.
Really now putting a lot of pressure from top on Koedam.
Building up some riding time.
>> Tim: Man, if you're out there watching this kind of wrestling as a high school wrestler, I mean, there's so many opportunities to go on from high school and -- >> Jim: There sure is.
>> Tim: -- wow, this American Rivers Conference, best in the nation.
>> Jim: Best division three in the country.
We got great junior colleges in here.
We got grand view, wins the national championships.
A D2 team in Iowa, you got all kinds of opportunities.
Kinkaid now switching off to the other wrist, putting the pressure on that side.
Still only 3-0, though, and I wouldn't be surprised if he wants to get some -- get back on his feet and build his league.
>> Tim: Close to two minutes of riding time, so it's been a dominant performance on top by Kinkaid since the takedown.
Looking for that cradle.
>> Jim: That's what he's looking for right there.
>> Tim: And that's what Koedam knows he's looking for, but he has to go to his chest, and that's not where you want to be.
>> Jim: Over two minutes riding time.
>> Tim: And now he's got the wrist locked up.
>> Jim: Wrist locked up, sitting over the ankle.
>> Warning.
>> Jim: Brings a stall call.
>> Tim: Second call on Koedam, one point.
Now it's 4-0.
And pretty much going to have riding time locked up.
As we end the second period here, 4-0, dominating performance right now by the Duhawk, Eric Kinkaid.
All American last year at 149 fourth in division threes.
15-3 this year.
>> Jim: Yeah, Comanche, Iowa.
>> Tim: Comanche, Iowa.
One of their first state champions, Roy Seymour, man.
>> Jim: Koedam, see if he can do better on his feet here.
5-0, but Kinkaid has riding time.
Will have riding time.
Oh, nice shot by Koedam.
You can't just shoot in, though, and stop.
He gets out of position.
Now he's just trying to hold on.
Got to try to finish earlier, as soon as you get in, best time to try to finish, get an angle, or lift him up.
Another shot by Koedam.
Loras got to be thinking major decision territory here.
Kinkaid will need another takedown.
Big underhook by Kinkaid.
Koedam's been warned and penalized for stalling.
Got to be careful on the edge here.
>> Tim: Yep.
>> Jim: He's doing a good job, though, staying in there.
>> Tim: Short time, 40 seconds left in regulation.
50, the riding time secure.
So it's effectively 6-0.
So you need feet the back.
You need a takedown and back points.
>> Jim: Right now I think it'd be a win for Koedam if he doesn't win -- to avoid getting injured.
Oh, not where he wanted to be.
>> Tim: Now you want to save a couple of points.
Get to your belly right now.
It's close, and nice job, and the major decision by Eric Kinkaid.
That from start to finish.
He was in control.
>> Jim: Yeah.
13-0.
And Loras takes the lead.
Team score, 11-7.
Here's a replay here.
Koedam tries kind of a fireman but out of position.
Gets taken right to his back.
And gives up four back points as well.
So here we go.
11 -- team score, 11-7 in the favor of Loras.
Got coach Glosser here with us coming up.
Coach, coach, 11-7 lead after the first five, you got to feel pretty good about that.
>> Yeah, yeah, happy with the way the guys are competing out there.
Got to keep it going.
>> Jim: Is that the message going into halftime?
>> Absolutely.
It's been back and forth, stay in your match, and get ready for your moment.
>> Jim: Okay, coach, appreciate it, good luck the rest of the way.
>> Tim: Okay, 11-7, team score, stick around, we'll be back at intermission to talk with Coe athletic staff and a very special guest is going to join us after.
Thanks for viewing.
>> Tim: Welcome back to Kohawk arena, I'm Tim Johnson, and I'm with Joel, and Joel, I got a jacket on here that I earned, okay?
>> Looks pretty good.
>> Tim: And it was worn before you were born, but I'm feeling pretty good in it.
You are the assistant athletic director at Coe, and first of all let's talk about community, even though it's below zero out, we've got some youth programs here and a really nice crowd behind me on half this gym.
You've got to be -- community's really important to Coe, isn't it?
>> Yes, we're very fortunate to be in the Cedar Rapids area.
And wrestling's such a big draw for us.
We're surrounded by community clubs tonight as well as surrounding area.
We want to thank them for taking the time in this frigid weather for joining us.
>> Tim: We're excited.
Iowa PBS, being back with college wrestling, and I think the excitement from my standpoint is that putting the spotlight on small colleges and it's exciting to be here.
>> Yes, super exciting.
I've been told -- I was not here, but I've been told the last time you were here was like 2012ish, so we're super excited we got asked to be part of this, to bring you back here and grow the sport of wrestling from the state of Iowa.
We really appreciate it.
>> Tim: Thank you for being with us.
Good luck in the second.
It's a close match here.
Always goes down.
>> Go hawks.
>> Tim: Thank a lot Joelle.
Coe has packed the crowd tonight.
Here are how wrestlers in bun of those towns not far away have found their own unique way of giving back to their community.
Along highway 151, the main artery between Coe and Loras in Dubuque sits a town renowned for their pumpkin fest and pumpkin weigh-off.
>> You're clear to come down, Johnny.
>> Tim: The raider wrestling team has made it a tradition to participate in the weigh-off every year, helping move these massive gourds from truck beds and trailers s to fork Lyft lift and scale.
The head coach says it's a good workout for his team and a great self-starter.
>> They do love doing it.
They ask me in the off-season when the pumpkin fest is going to be.
And I think they enjoy just the competition part of it.
Even though they're not competing, they're still a part of a competition.
>> From what I know, it GEZ back way before my time.
Previous coach got them involved and we kept it rolling.
>> That's awesome.
I didn't know pumpkins could get that big, so.
>> Tim: We'll be right back with highlights and our final five matches of the night.
You're watching college wrestling on Iowa PBS.
>> Tim: We're back at Kohawk arena where the score is 11-7.
The visiting team Loras out in front.
And we're joined by a very special guest, the legendary -- if I'm calling you, Jim Miller, legendary coach, then I've got double, triple quadruple legendary coach.
Dan Gable joining us.
It's good to be back on Iowa PBS.
We spent a lot of years together as partners here, but it's great for the state and it's great for wrestling.
We're glad you joined us tonight.
>> Well, I don't know how we got back on, but we should have never been off.
You know that, because I'm prejudiced about this sport and I love it.
I just cannot believe how many connections that I have within just these two teams tonight.
There's both coaches, you know, like I've wrestled for the hawkeyes I believe at one time or another.
I've got athletes on one side, athletes on the other side.
Who are you rooting for?
Loras gave me an award, doctorate of all laws.
>> Tim: Didn't know that.
>> Well, you know, I'm closer to Coe, and I got later relationships with Coe, like the Kurtzes.
I'm going to let them wrestle it out.
It's pretty -- it's been a pretty good match so far.
I think the fans have liked the action.
And so you know, it's -- I think we have, what, five matches that we're getting on.
>> Tim: Five matches.
>> We're even promoting female, right?
>> Tim: Yeah.
>> We have to do that, because that's what -- >> Tim: Fastest growing sport in the world right now, women's sport.
>> We're just happy to have them.
But, no I'm really excited that all of a sudden, you know, us three got together again.
>> Tim: Well, here's what's coming up for the five matches we have left tonight.
Borren versus Scranton.
174, that should be fireworks.
Gnida versus Richardson.
Barker versus Voss, Watson and Arsenault, and maybe it comes down to heavyweight, Clark versus Dancy.
We're getting ready.
When they come out we'll go at 165.
And there we go.
We got young people coming out.
It's a nice crowd for minus -- below zero, and Dan, you're going to stay with us for a couple of matches and calls.
And I don't know, in the old days, my arm got so sore because you'd come out of your seat sometimes and want to get out there and tell them what to do.
>> The 174-pounder Gnida from Loras, his dad wrestled for me, Andy Gnida.
So you know, I got to be a little careful here how I'm rooting, or if I am rooting, just make some calls.
>> Tim: Yes, that's what we're doing.
>> Maybe.
Of course, that's a three-point takedown, right?
Not a two-pointer.
>> Tim: Kael Scranton from Iowa city west.
And Dustin from Bettendorf.
All American last year, got seventh.
And he's a pinker Loras out infront.
This is a big match for the Duhawks because they're out in front.
They've got a favored wrestler coming out.
They'd like to put the foot to the pedal.
Here comes Coe's Kael Scranton.
And Scranton A junior.
7-12 record.
Younger brother Kyler is a freshman at Coe as well.
They graduate from Iowa city west high school.
Four-time Iowa state qualifier.
A little undersized here.
You can see.
But they need him.
Next man up and here we go at 165.
>> Jim: Some good action those first five matches, Dan.
>> Yeah, it was.
They're good wrestlers, I mean, come on, they got good coaches, goes back in history.
You know, they're not going to -- we're in the state of Iowa, we're getting it back on television.
It's always been on television.
And I don't think they pulled out just because they wanted to pull out.
I think they had too much competition.
They, you know, couldn't get rights from ESPN and a lot of things.
It's just hard to do.
>> Tim: We had asked coach -- football, wrestling, and track.
High hurdler.
>> He was headed to another college.
He said you and Mark Johnson walked in, that was it.
>> Yeah, but nobody know where is that is.
But no, it was great.
His family was super family, and he was really an exciting guy.
>> Jim: Nice job by Scranton.
>> They love him.
The big O they called him.
>> Jim: They still call him the big O.
He's still doing good.
>> Tim: Oh, nice job of getting out of what was close to a takedown for the Kohawk.
>> That was a nice shot.
>> Tim: Couldn't get that right arm cut across.
>> Center.
>> Tim: Oh.
Nice action.
>> Jim: Slide by action by Scranton.
Here's a replay here.
You see the slide by all of a sudden.
Boren was rolling with it.
>> Tim: The best division three in the nation, at grandview last week, the top NIAA junior college, the big guys.
I don't think Iowa fans can get enough and that's why I think that we're just going to keep growing on Iowa PBS here.
Putting the spotlight on small colleges.
>> With the university of Iowa just taking command of female wrestling and hopefully -- >> Tim: And that too.
>> -- we'll go further from that.
But there's always issues in everything you do.
Just like the issues whether it's in the government, whether it's presidential or in wrestling, it's like, you know, right now in the world it's like Russia and Iran, that's the political countries that we fight against.
And sometimes it holds us back just because we are, you know, at war or something, you know, like that.
>> Tim: In the wrestling world, Japan jumping up.
They're doing something right.
>> Right, and you know, definitely.
And we got an event coming up on that with some top matches.
>> Tim: I did wrestle in college.
>> Oh my goodness, look at this.
T. J. Johnson.
>> Tim: They made us wear bumblebee singlets.
>> Jim: If they were a bumblebee, that means you stung a little bit.
>> Tim: Oh, he got the three points.
>> That's what you've got to do.
You can't get in and hang.
You've got to cut the corner.
Get in and score points right away.
>> Jim: Scranton is doing what he needs to do, because he's not the favorite here.
Here's where Bohren has been confident.
>> On the bottom there just because he felt like this guy is good.
Instead of really continuing to get the heck out of there.
>> Tim: Exactly.
>> He kind of went into defense.
If he'd have kept his offense up, of course, he might have been beaten by doing that before.
>> Jim: Scranton's really been the one, you know, been the most aggressive on his feet and actually scored a takedown.
But here we are 3-3 with Bohren where he wants to be.
>> Tim: Building riding time.
>> Jim: The Duhawk was 7th last year.
Out of Bettendorf high school.
>> Riding time is up to 44 seconds, yeah.
>> Jim: 11-7 team score.
3-3 here at 165.
20 seconds left in the seconds period.
Be really big if Scranton can get out.
Bohren is putting him to his back.
>> Tim: Uh-oh.
Wow.
>> Huge pin if he could get it.
>> Tim: Well, more than that, it's all of a sudden, there it is, yeah.
Wow.
>> Two seconds.
>> Tim: And he holds off, but four big near fall points put up by Kurt Frost, the official, and that takes the score, separates in a big way, 7-3.
Over a minute riding time.
Coe's going to be on their feet.
>> You can see how Bohren ended up being an all American last year.
>> Tim: Dangerous on the mat.
That was a pretty easy just maneuver.
At the same time, he's in the guy's head a little bit.
When you're not -- when you're in your head a little bit, you're moving a little slower.
Just a little.
>> But he did get a takedown.
>> Jim: This is one where I wouldn't be surprised if coach Glosser is looking for a pin.
Right now it's a regular decision, there's a job to do here.
Scranton's been doing the job.
He got caught but didn't go down.
So needs to continue fighting in hire.
Minute left.
>> Tim: Another takedown by Bohren have put it major decision with riding time.
This is a match within the match right here.
>> Jim: Yeah.
>> Tim: Both of them have a job to do.
What were you saying, Dan, if a Coe wrestler was your guy?
>> All of a sudden, you know, he's on the bottom, and he's trying to keep from getting turned.
When you're on the bottom, you're supposed to be getting out.
At the same time, you've got to be smart.
And you've got to have moves that you can still count on.
And just a little bit of hang in there got him in trouble and let him use his legs well and got the four-point near fall.
>> Tim: I think Bohren is settling okay.
>> See right there, he's shot but he wasn't able to cut the corner more.
He shot and stopped.
>> Tim: Well, it's a regular decision.
>> Jim: Yep.
>> No, that's -- >> Tim: Three points for the favored wrestler from Loras and so Dustin Bohren, the all American will get a win here.
14-7.
Loras out in front now as we go to 174.
And, Jim, this is a match that we really marked as the feature match of the night.
>> Jim: Yes, we did.
LJ Richardson was an all American in 2023, and Zeb Gnida actually got third at this weight class.
And over the last couple years they're 2-1.
Gnida two wins between them.
But man, this is a big match.
Coe actually needs this match.
>> Tim: Yeah, LJ Richardson needs to even up the score.
He's down 2-1 in their three matches.
He's a senior, 13-2, starter, was an all American.
Placed at 174.
From prosper, Texas.
The fourth time state place winner and a champion.
Zeb Gnida, 12-0, has not been beaten this year.
Graduate student.
2-1 versus LJ.
And was third as Jim said, all American.
>> Jim: His dad wrestled for me.
Andy.
>> Tim: Andy Gnida.
>> Jim: I hadn't seen him in a long time, I ran into him on the way in.
He had to remind me who he was.
>> I know what you're talking about.
>> Tim: The coaching trees of Jim Miller and Dan Gable areincredible.
I'm sure that's part of the fun for both of you, not just seeing the wrestlers, but those who go on and coach.
Well, yeah, that's the profession, so they're in it for life, you know.
And you're happy that you gave them some of that inspiration to do that for their livelihoods.
You know, I mean, John Oostendorp, he didn't want to wrestle.
He wanted to play football.
>> Tim: He did well when he was an all American in football.
>> He told me, he says, they didn't give me much a chance.
I had to come back to you.
You give me quite a bit of chance here.
But I don't think that was his first love, but it became his first love.
You know, from a standpoint of a profession.
Because he's still doing it.
>> Tim: Oh, 24 years at Coe, and he was on the national team after he graduated from Iowa.
>> Greco.
>> Tim: Greco.
And world team and really excelled.
>> Oh, the fans just -- the match, the things he did.
I mean, he threw people.
I mean, everybody.
And he also could shoot high crotches and duck hunters and stuff like that.
You know, I had to get on him a couple times early on when he wasn't living up to his, like my expectations.
You know, maybe I don't know what it was exactly, but he got chewed out one time like nobody else has ever been chewed out before.
And it was in an audience, but nobody was watching, just me and him.
Maybe somebody else heard us.
>> Jim: Did you ever grab ahold of him?
Is he too big?
>> No, no.
>> Tim: I didn't think anybody was too big for you.
>> He probably could have thrownme through the wall.
But he's too scared to do it.
He wanted to hurt me, but not really.
Because one time I got on him so bad at practice that his fist came up.
And guess what, I just looked at him in the eyes and they came back down.
>> Tim: Gnida with a nice escape.
Go ahead, coach.
>> I'm glad that he didn't deliver.
Might not be here today.
>> Tim: No kidding.
1-0, Gnida out in front.
Got the escape after a 0-0 first period.
>> Jim: Nice shot driving through.
>> Oh man.
>> Tim: That's going to be stalling.
They got the stall call, didn't get the point.
Good aggression there.
>> He got in deep there too.
>> Tim: Yeah, he did.
It was a good bull rush.
>> But he just got a warning right?
>> Tim: Gnida just got a warning, right, backing out.
>> The point from the escape.
>> Tim: Yes.
Tim Johnson alongside Jim Miller and legendary coach Dan Gable.
And Dan, you continue to inspire, and I suppose, intimidate little bit, but you didn't intimidate that line of kids that were wanting your autograph.
And Jim looked at me and he said, it's always the same.
>> Jim: Everywhere we go.
>> Tim: Jim Miller, the director of the Dan Gable museum and national hall of fame, and Dan, that continues to grow and influence the state.
>> Yeah, I got Mike Doty with me.
He brought me up here tonight.
Mike's a part of that museum.
He gets out, raises the funds, Washington and Iowa.
And he went to Iowa State when I was there as a grad assistant.
And then when I moved to Iowa, he moved along to the University of Iowa.
But at the same time, museums respect easy.
It's like the sport of wrestling.
In Iowa, it's a little bit easier to survive just because we've had wrestling for over 100 years, and we've had good wrestling for over 100 years.
I mean, to the point that it's not just known within the Midwest, it's not just known within the United States of America, it's known without -- throughout the world with world and Olympic medallists.
And you know, that's a big deal.
That's a big deal.
>> Tim: Check this replay out.
Nice double shot.
Head in the stomach, but Gnida pulled him up and ahead of it.
>> And good foot movement by Gnida as well.
>> Tim: Really important.
And wow.
>> Jim: 1-1.
Neither spent much time underneath.
They have not been able to solve the puzzle on their feet.
And here we go.
>> Love it when they just explode on the whistle.
>> Tim: Yeah, and Gnida had that good double shot.
So he penetrated well but got pulled up, I believe, right?
>> Jim: No, opposite.
LJ Richardson had that shot.
>> Tim: Okay, I couldn't remember who did that.
But the bottom line, so we know that they got something here on their feet.
And we just got to wait and see.
>> Jim: Yeah, both these guys been all Americans.
Some high level.
A takedown's going to move big.
>> Tim: They had some positions that scoring was pretty close, but they were able to move out of it.
Good down blocking, circling, and that type of stuff is so important in your ability to score offensively and be able to keep getting the sport on.
>> Jim: Man, you know, I say this a lot, but I think I probably heard it from you years ago, who can execute when they're tired?
And you know, they look fresh, but you're tired at this time.
>> Tim: Oh, nice shot.
Gnida in on the single.
Lifts up.
Oh.
Nothing yet.
It's close.
This is a judgement call by Frost.
>> Jim: Yep, it's close.
>> Tim: That's three points with 20 seconds left.
>> Jim: Yep, Gnida.
Woo, a stalemate and a big takedown by Gnida there.
Richardson was not able to cut across, cut around.
>> Go red.
>> Jim: Explode up again.
>> Wow, look at this.
>> Tim: Not much time, though.
On the edge.
Pretty good match by both guys.
>> It was.
>> Jim: Hard fought win for Gnida.
Three more points on the board, and now a ten-point lead going into the last three matches.
And right here, that single leg.
Lifts him up and cuts across.
>> Yeah, he's got that arm across.
That's what makes a big difference.
>> Jim: Yeah, there it is.
>> Tim: Dan, it's like riding a bike.
You're doing such a good job, will you stay another match with us?
>> Sure.
I don't know about that actually, I'm not doing that good of a job.
>> Jim: You know what, Coe needs to win the last three.
And they can.
And it's possible for them.
And Voss is a guy who want out there if you're Coe.
>> Tim: Jared Voss.
He's a senior, 14-2.
He's behind Landry Barker.
>> That was a really nice to on one go behind.
Did a nice job.
>> Jim: Getting a little sloppy.
>> He got hit in the head too, or something.
Something, cramp.
>> Tim: I don't know whether he said crap or cramp.
Jared Voss down on the mat right now.
He's a senior, 14-2.
>> Jim: Here's this throw by, pull down.
>> Maybe he landed on his -- the knees landed on him.
I don't know.
I don't know, we'll see.
>> Jim: Maybe this one.
>> Yeah.
>> Tim: He just cramped up on him.
>> Jim: He got kind of out of position.
It was awkward.
>> He had to fight through that a little bit, or did he hurt his knee?
>> Tim: Landry Barker will get a choice when the injury check is done.
Landry Barker is the Duhawk.
He's 9-1.
He's out of Covington in Louisiana, Saint Paul's high school.
A two-time Louisiana state champion.
>> I think he cramped up in both calves.
>> Tim: Jared Voss' older brother Jake Voss graduated from Coe.
A two-time national qualifier and an all American.
>> Jim: When he went up there, he went up on his toes.
And I think both his calves cramped up.
>> Nice mat return by Voss.
Yeah, his dad was a longtime west Delaware high school coach.
>> And now Jake's taken over.
Jake's the coach now.
>> His dad Jeff, long time coach.
>> Jim: I was just with him.
He got that award.
>> Yes, he did.
National wrestling hall of fame.
State chapter.
>> Tim: Congratulations, Iowa state chapter of the wrestling hall of fame.
>> Jim: Oh, he's got his wrists hooked up.
He likes this tilt action.
>> Tim: Nice job of getting his wrist out but then walking his hands, fingers.
>> I'll tell you, the quality of wrestling here is pretty high.
>> Jim: What I'm impressed with is they've all been scoring points.
That's what fans want to see, viewers want to see, and you tune in to PBS and you're going to see it.
Because these are great athletes.
Well, here we go.
Coe needs big decisions, they need big wins.
Down ten with three matches to go.
>> Tim: So three major decisions isn't enough.
>> Jim: That's correct.
We don't know who's going to win the title.
He's got him in trouble.
>> Oh boy.
>> Jim: Stepping over his head.
>> Oh boy.
>> Jim: He got two.
Count of.
Two that was a pretty good move there.
I mean, a little space there.
He utilized every inch of it there.
>> Action.
>> Landry is trying -- does keephis base, but Voss doing a good job tying up his wrist.
>> Tim: He's a good wrestler.
He's got the skills for riding.
Looked good on his feet.
Defensively, offensively.
Bottom guy right now is good or he'd have been out of it already.
>> Jim: Stall call here.
>> Yep.
Seems like he's rolling his arms pretty good.
Getting ridden pretty hard.
Keeps moving in there.
>> Voss going to ride him out here, 5-1.
End of the first.
Here he steps over the head.
Think he goes a little bit too fast here.
>> Tim: Wow.
>> Bails out as hard as he could.
And he does, only gives up a two takedown.
>> Tim: Near fall.
>> Near fall, I'm sorry.
Now Voss looking to build his lead.
>> Jim: Two on one in short drags and underhooks and overhooks, and wow, he's been around wrestling a long time.
>> He knows his team needs a big win here.
>> Tim: This Loras kid can wrestle too, otherwise he would have been been pinned on that arm bar.
Arm and leg bar, I guess.
>> Jim: See if Voss can do something, front headlock.
>> Barker's not his first time he's wrestled, I can tell you that.
he came up with that two on one, stopped that go behind.
Kept head position down blocked all the way through.
Yeah, it's been a good period for him so far here, second period.
>> Tim: I don't know if he has riding time or not.
It says 2:45 or 44.
5, I don't know.
get get the home crowdgoing here.
>> Jim: Barker held his own this period.
Still 5-1.
>> Tim: Shooting him off the mat.
>> Jim: Looks like Voss taking neutral.
Needs a takedown if he's going to get any major decisions here >> That riding time clock is a little -- >> Yeah, we have to turn it.
>> Tim: He rode him for a little bit, but I'm not sure he's got riding time or not.
>> Jim: Barker really doing his job here, man.
Staying in the match after the fist period.
Thought it might be a big win for Voss.
>> Tim: Right there, got to watch it.
That's a point there.
And this is be the wrestlers need to be aware of what's going on.
>> A circle there, can't back out, especially when you had a warning already.
>> Tim: Now a takedown of Voss will definitely be a major decision.
>> If he rides him or has a riding time.
>> Jim: Double under by Voss.
>> Tim: Got to watch it there.
Wow, wow.
>> Jim: Voss front head.
Kept that angle from happening, though.
>> You don't want to back off here, you want to circle on.
>> Jim: And Voss, beautiful duck.
>> Tim: There is a big, big takedown.
Just what the doctor ordered for Coe.
>> Jim: That was an John Oostendorp duck right there.
He got real excited.
>> He'd duck and get the go behind, hit the high crotch.
>> Jim: He did what you did to me about every match.
He hit his assistant coach next to him.
>> Oh, he did?
>> Jim: My shoulder got awful sore ten years with you.
>> Whoa.
>> Tim: Nice mat return.
Big win for Voss.
He's got four.
Now they're only six down.
Two more wins is what Coe needs, and so a major decision for Voss from Coe.
And the score now 17-11.
>> Jim: Two pretty tough wrestlers, though, one just a little tougher.
>> Nice duck under and then gets him down to the mat for a takedown.
>> Tim: Yeah, he did a nice job of getting his hips down on that return.
So Dan, we just want to thank you for everything that you have done for wrestling and continue to do, and thanks for being the greatest ambassador our sport has ever known and for being with us today.
>> Hey, I'm just happy that we have this ability to do this.
We have five opportunities, and you guys are involved, and if you guys do a good job when you might be able to do it beyond this year.
I'm not putting any pressure on you.
>> Jim: We were good but could be better, right, coach?
Thanks, coach.
>> Tim: Thanks, coach.
>> Appreciate it.
>> Jim: Mathieu Arsenault for Coe.
10-6.
Alex Watson from Loras, 9-11.
Yeah, coach didn't chew me out, but he did challenge me quite a bit to, you know -- >> Tim: Get better.
>> Jim: You're good but you can get better.
I listened to the coach, and I think I got better because I was inspired by the coach.
>> Tim: That's why you never want to, you know, underestimate the power and influence of a keep.
You were one of the great ones, Jim, and you know, great coaches are rare.
But you know what I think the key is?
When wrestlers or athletes know you're for them, that is the difference right there.
>> Jim: Yeah, that's a big deal.
Sometimes you say, well, that young man will run through the wall for you.
But if they know you'll run through the wall for them, that's a big difference.
>> Next one's stalling.
>> Tim: You know, we talk about Gable always drawing some tension.
We went down to New Orleans at Gable museum for a night with Dan Gable in New Orleans and packed the house in New Orleans.
So it's been fun.
>> Jim: Hey, wherever Dan goes.
>> Tim: Wherever we go, it's been cool.
Anyway, we got a big match here.
Alex Watson.
>> Jim: He's 9-11 and a sophomore, and for the Kohawks, 197, Mathieu Arsenault.
Three-year starter at Coe from plainfield central high school, plainfield, Illinois.
In on that single leg.
>> Tim: Beautiful shot by Arsenault.
>> Jim: The takedown, three points, Coe starting to role.
Goes right, looking for a cradle.
I mean, almost every year seems like with these two tames it comes down to heavyweight.
And it's setting up that that could exactly happen tonight.
Heavyweight match.
>> Break, guys.
>> Jim: Nice breakdown by Arsenault, stepping over the ankle.
Oh, he's looking for some -- he wants to work for some back points here, tell ya.
15 seconds left in the first, but he's putting a lot of pressure on Watson and taking a lot out of him when you're that tough, putting that much pressure on the guy on top.
>> Tim: Coe fans getting boisterous.
You know, getting on the 97-pounder Alex Watson.
>> Jim: Mathieu Arsenault, a senior, 10-6 record.
Parents Mark and tammy Arsenault out of plainfield, Illinois.
And there's one.
And now the Kohawk extends his lead 4-0. and you know they're thinking we can get a major here if you're costaff.
Then there's not criteria.
If it's tied, there's criteria, it starts with number of victories.
When it's five and five, it's the number of falls.
There haven't been falls.
Then you get to the match points.
When we get to heavyweight, if that's the situation, we'll tell you right where they are in match points.
And that would determine the winner if there's a tie.
So right now it's real important not only for the win here for Coe to stay in it but as many points as you can get.
>> Tim: 100%.
>> Jim: You've got to be on it here, don't leave it on your heavyweight.
>> Fingers.
>> 45 seconds.
>> Tim: 35 seconds to go, second period.
4-1, Arsenault in the lead.
>> Jim: Coach is yelling at Arsenault, hey, we need another one this period.
They want that major decision if they can get it.
Nice shot.
Nice single.
>> Tim: Okay.
Right then he got right in there.
End of the second period, big takedown for the Kohawk.
>> Jim: When he goes, he goes.
Sometimes as a coach you're saying, why are we only taking one shot in a period?
Okay, we're on our feet again.
That's exactly what they're saying.
Let's get another one.
>> Tim: And he's got a real nice shot.
Single leg takedown to Watson's right leg.
>> Jim: Every point counts.
>> Tim: And I think we're two seconds short of riding time.
And so if you're Coe, you don't want to leave it town to the criteria.
>> Jim: No, not at all, man.
The blood pressure is high on the coaching staffs, both of them right now.
>> Tim: Big time one minute for the Loras wrestler right here.
>> Jim: Yeah.
>> Tim: Because if that's a regulation, it comes down to 17-14, and if Coe would win and make it 17-17, it would come down to match points.
>> Jim: Nice shot.
>> Tim: There's a big takedown, and there's your major.
>> Jim: 10-1, now he's going to have riding time.
>> Tim: Wow, this is big for Coe.
>> Jim: Big for Coe.
It's going to come down, if it stays like this, the winner at heavyweight will win it for their team.
Just like we said.
Every time it seems like Loras and Coe comes down to heavyweight.
Last year was 21-19, Coe.
10-1 riding time, it's going to be 11-1.
And four points for Coe.
>> Tim: 17-15 as we do to heavyweight, and it's all on the line at 285.
There's your winner for Coe.
>> Jim: Here's mat Arsenault taking another same shot.
Beautiful job.
Final takedown.
>> Tim: Yeah, putting an exclamation mark on his nice victory there.
Mathieu Arsenault, the senior getting a big victory.
Now we go to heavy.
>> Jim: Woo, two big guys.
>> Tim: Two big guys, man.
We've got at 285 for the Kohawks it's Damari Dancy, the senior, 11-4, two-year starter at Coe from portage high school.
Two-time Indiana state qualifier going up against, great story, going up against Jonah Clark from Waco of old.
And he was a football player and they needed somebody a week before the regionals last year.
Coach walked into the weight room and he mentioned wrestling and the guy said, well, yeah.
>> Jim: He asked the coach, you have any football players that wrestle, Jonah Clark said, well I got second.
He goes, second in what?
He goes, second in the state.
>> Tim: So Jonah Clark out of Waco, that's down by my neck of the woods in southeast Iowa, south of 218, south of Iowa City and Whalen and Crawfordsville.
He was a state finalist for Waco.
Went to Loras for football.
Now he's got the opportunity to bring a big American Rivers Conference win for Loras.
He's 4-1.
245 pounds.
>> Jim: Damari Dancy's 11-4.
Portage, Indiana.
>> Tim: You know, portage, that's where Leroy Vega, Leroy Vega wrestled at portage.
A three-time all American for Minnesota.
One year they had ten all Americans.
>> Tim: I remember that.
>> Jim: Leroy's part of that.
Then Leroy went back, and he was -- he was the coach for the Kohawk here as you wint back to his alma mater and he was the head coach, and now he's at Purdue and assisting former hawkeye Tony on his staff.
Well, these guys so far dead even for the first minute and a half.
Almost like this meet's been dead even.
>> Jim: We don't have to count up the match points now.
>> Tim: No, we don't.
>> Jim: Because it's not going to tie.
I can tell you my assistant tiffany had it all ready to go.
It's about even.
Within a point or so of being even.
It would have been interesting, but we don't have to worry about it now with the two-point differentiation.
>> Tim: I'm glad tiffany's here, because I wouldn't trust me or you.
>> Jim: Tell you, what a takedown by either one of these guys would loom large.
Not only for winning this match but winning the meet.
>> Offense guys.
Fingers.
>> Tim: Drop levels there.
Dancy.
But was able to get the legs back.
Jonah Clark hasn't even been a college wrestler for an entire year yet.
>> Jim: Yep.
Nice shot by Dancy.
>> Tim: Right now a couple of more shots there.
And he's going to get a stall call against Jonah Clark.
That could be big.
>> Jim: #-0, we go to the second period.
Four minutes of wrestling left tonight in regulation, if it doesn't go to sudden victory.
And to the winner goes all the spoils.
And it would be a big conference victory for whoever walks out of here.
>> Tim: Oh man, Clark out immediately.
>> Offense.
>> Jim: A lot of hand fighting going on in there.
Nice snap down by Clark.
Dem ry ari circles in.
>> Wrestle out of that.
>> Tim: If you're joining our college wrestling coverage via Facebook or YouTube, we want to know where you're watching from.
Let us know in the comments, and thank you to all of our viewers for tuning in tonight.
>> Jim: Oh wow.
>> Tim: Inside body lock.
>> Jim: Right from the get go and he does it.
Man.
>> Tim: Now that's a big time throw, coach.
>> Jim: Woo.
>> Fingers.
>> Jim: He's been in the weight room a little bit.
Both these guys have, but boy that was big.
Really puts Dancy kind of on the clock.
Man, he's got to score here.
Hits a nice shot, but good sprawl by Clark.
>> Tim: Takedown would tie it.
And there's 20 seconds left in the second period.
But he'd have to, you know, a takedown and a ride out.
And so it's really going to take two takedowns, probably, or he'll have the -- he'll be down to start the third period, right?
>> Jim: Yep.
>> Tim: Dancy from Coe.
So he gets an opportunity.
>> Jim: Here's a replay, and you'll see Clark goes right into the body lock and then lifts up.
Oh.
Great takedown.
Dancy does go down.
>> Tim: Hey, that's a lot more fun than football right there, huh?
I mean, he says, I can do that.
You know, strap the uniform on.
>> Jim: Real important few seconds here for Dancy.
>> Tim: Dancy trying to get to tripod.
Needs to get to his feet and get a hand.
Can't go back down.
Nice job.
All right.
>> Jim: 4-2.
>> Tim: This is where Jonah Clark needs to know what he has right here.
This is just an individual.
He's got a lead and a team victory right here.
So fight and he's fighting, but you don't want to make mistakes.
Little blood time.
Upcoming schedule for Iowa PBS, we've got through more big meets, the battle of the burg s next week.
Central versus Luther, February 6th.
And then our women's match back in Des Moines Tuesday, February 11th.
And we've had two great meets, grandview, Nebraska, Carney, know Coe and Loras.
Those three coming up.
Iowa PBS college wrestling.
Little more than a minute left in regulation right here.
Dancy could get a takedown here.
More than likely Clark would get out and we'd be going to sudden victory.
He's got to get in.
Whoa.
Whoa, and the foot is in.
And have you seen nicer throws than that?
>> Tim: He's fun to watch.
Jonah Clark.
>> Jim: He's only, what was his record, 4-1, only had five matches this year so far.
>> Tim: Off the gridiron to the grapple mat and those takedowns huge, under pressure, everything on the line.
And right now Loras only 23 seconds away.
Coach Jeren Glosser.
>> Jim: He's real glad he went in the weight room last year, I'll tell you that.
>> Tim: Ask the football coach if he had any wrestlers and Jonah overheard him.
And wow.
What a win.
Jonah Clark comes in and gets the win at heavyweight.
Jonah Clark and the win for the Duhawks over the Kohawks here at Kohawk arena.
And a real important win.
They go 2-1.
Coe's 2-1 in the American Rivers Conference.
What a dual as the teams shake hands.
There's your final score.
Loras, 20, Coe, 15.
And like you said, Jim, it's cold outside, but that was some heat.
And maybe the most was saved to last with Jonah Clark and those takedowns.
>> Jim: Here's a replay of Jonah, man.
This is something as a fan you love to see.
Just body lock.
The second time hit the lateral.
Made no doubt about it.
And put Loras over the top.
20-15.
>> Tim: Next Thursday, January 30th at 7:00 p. m. >> Jim: Two best teams in D3.
>> Tim: Well, with our second dual in the books, don't miss our next college wrestling coverage, the battle of theburg forour producer, director, and theentire excellent PBS Iowa production team, thanks for joining us on statewide PBS, I'm Tim Johnson along with legendary coach Jim Miller.
It was Loras, 20, Coe, 15, and that's the way it was from Kohawk arena.
Have a great night.
