It's college wrestling tonight, the number nine ranked central Dutch meet the number 12 ranked Luther Norse.
Hello everyone.
I'm Tim Johnson, along with my partner, ten time national champion coach and Hall of Famer Jim Miller.
And Jim, we got a raucous crowd tonight.
We got we got some some fired up fans here.
Big meet for both teams.
Speaking of both teams, let's look at the standings there.
Right in the middle of the American Rivers Conference.
Yeah I mean these teams trying to bust up into the top tier here into whatever happens tonight is going to make a difference for one of these teams.
Well, Luther leads the series 27 to 25.
The last matchup last month.
Central won 22 to 19 on January 9th, 2026.
Let's take a look at the lineup.
What do you like, Jim?
Well, I know one of these meets every point counts for each team.
It's really important, but I like 197 and that's going to be a couple veterans going at it and might determine the dual meet victory.
Well, let's wrestle.
We'll start at 125 pounds.
You're taking a look at Patrick Guga Reinders Gugala-Reinders Patrick Gugala-Reinders from Menasha, Wisconsin, goes up against Central's Carter West Burlington, Notre Dame, down from 133 last year.
He's tall and lean, Jim.
Now it is.
Both these guys are similar build.
This could be a this could be this is a real big match for each one to get off.
You know, get off to a good start.
Obviously Luther wants to quiet the crowd a little bit.
Big Red Big Red.
I thought was in Lincoln, Nebraska, for a minute there, and they've got Lincoln's got nothing over Central College here.
As far as great crowd students right behind us.
Football team and and it's a great start at 125 pounds.
Rivalry for years.
We'll talk about it later in the in the show.
Luther in there last year in the American Rivers Conference moving over along with Cornell College to the Midwest Conference to begin next year's academic and athletic struck by nice slide.
By.
Nice slide by by Carter West.
And right away he's putting a lot of pressure on Gugala-Reinders.
Got him broke down.
[LAUGHTER] Really has him stretched out.
Carter West has got a nice job.
Got that long body keeping the pressure forward with that work.
Gets the boots in.
Looking for the head lever.
Yeah, I mean Gugala-Reinders man, he's got to find his way to get back up to his feet trying to work a tripod up here.
He needs to come up and get and get some hand control, which he's trying to, and he.
Oh, nice little foot sweep.
Almost kept him kept him there.
But we got a one point escape.
Wes as I said out of Burlington Notre Dame we got three wrestlers tonight at Central College from that program led by Bill Plain and John Sigel.
Man, have those two done a job over the years?
Legendary morning sun.
Wapello Columbus Junction, New London, West Burlington, Notre Dame.
Notre Dame won the championship last year and there.
Is close.
He's close.
He's got.
A tour still in.
Still trying to adjust.
Nice job.
By Gugala-Reinders so far.
To stave it off, he's throwing the leg in.
Really nice job.
Good point, Jim Gugala-Reinders saves that takedown.
Here's the first takedown.
There you go.
Nice slide by here by West.
39 seconds riding.
Time for West.
3 to 1 lead.
You talked about it every point counting.
And what Gugala-Reinders did there.
You know he's you know saved from being behind 6 to 1 on the way to a major a major decision.
So.
And stopped riding time.
Yeah, that was big.
Now we got he's going on about 15 seconds left in the first period.
Landon Williams the second year Central College head coach, Wartburg national champion.
I know him well.
Two time national champion.
They're scrambling here.
Oh.
Went out of bounds.
That was close man.
Central.
Yeah.
There's Landon.
You know Landon his Wartburg crew when he came in with I think the only time in history of Division three they won four national dual titles and four NCAA titles during his four year career.
[LAUGHTER] [APPLAUSE] Gugala-Reinders on top.
Trying to get him down.
No stall call yet.
Trying to get a mat return.
Broomstick to get him down.
He does get the stall call.
And that signaled by the official stops the riding time.
There's a stall call.
The riding time is stopped now.
Back going again.
Green, you have a stall warning.
West back up to his feet, trying to get some hand control.
Gugala-Reinders does bring him back down.
Doing a nice job trying to get his leg in.
Yeah, he changed it up there.
Brought him back into his lap instead of trying.
I mean.
two tall dudes.
Yeah, really got real pretty good control on top.
Both legs in.
He has been warned for stalling.
So if he's on top, he's got to make it look like, you know, he's getting busy here.
Really nice answer.
By Gugala-Reinders from the early takedown by West.
Right.
Oh, now he's trying to get him on his hip here.
But West back to his base trying to get a leg out.
Trying to.
He's getting him.
He's getting him high.
Gugala-Reinders getting a little bit high here.
West got both hands on the neck.
Oh, nice.
Nice job of getting back the boots in.
I mean, momentum seems to be going Gugala-Reinders ways now.
He's got to feel good going into the last period.
Absolutely.
Big time ride this second period.
10 seconds to go.
I mean, he's building his riding time.
Going to be almost a minute.
[LAUGHTER] [APPLAUSE] Actually is a minute a minute exactly.
Riding time.
He I think he's going to go neutral, which he does.
Otherwise he'd lose the riding time.
But right now he's sitting at a three to 3 to 1 deficit.
But he has riding time.
Take down three points.
Would put him ahead 4 to 3 and it would start accumulating more riding time.
So no reason to go under.
Yeah really no advantage.
So but West is the only one with the takedown.
But we'll see what happens here.
Obviously Gugala-Reinders he's the one that he's the one that the pressure's on to go ahead and and to score.
[APPLAUSE] [LAUGHTER] Let's Talk single.
Luther would love to pull out that first one.
But there's West again for that slide by.
Got to get him down.
And there it is.
Executed very nicely by West.
Second takedown that slide by three points up 6 to 1.
Now.
No riding time for West.
So it's 6 to 1.
Boy he's done that a number of times.
He just he just felt he feels that slide by and just hits it.
As soon as the pressure came in he was ready to hit.
It wasn't.
That's a feel thing isn't it, Jim?
I mean, you feel that the forward motion you want your wrestlers moving in, but when the guy's got a lethal slide by, you've got to you've got to be a little aware of that.
And right now, Western control in the third period he's on top with a nice ride.
[LAUGHTER] You know.
Well we got Gugala-Reinders up to his feet but gets sucked back by West.
Nice job by West.
Still in major control on top.
Good pressure.
He's trying to get some back points here.
There it is.
There's his points.
He's getting some back points.
Now.
He's looking for the fall.
He's trying to give him room.
And look.
He's got the fall.
Wow.
[APPLAUSE] Nice.
[APPLAUSE] Here's the slide by.
There's the takedown.
He just didn't settle for a win here.
He cranks cranks him over and gets a fall.
What a turnaround there.
It looked like Gugala-Reinders was really had that match in reach.
Then it looked like he was going to keep from having it be a bonus win.
And West comes through with a big fall for the Dutch.
Carter West.
Flashback to 2012.
Just before Iowa PBS college wrestling coverage hiatus Landon Williams wrestling at 165 pounds for Wartburg College, hosting the Iowa Conference Championships and Jim Miller.
You saw him right there coaching Iowa PBS was on the mat bringing it home.
Good memories there.
Nostalgia sales man, I'll tell you nothing better than looking back now.
We're at 133 pounds.
We've got another West Burlington, Notre Dame wrestler, CJ Davis, going up against.
He's a freshman going up against a senior Connor Kidd he was an All-American.
He's from Morton, Illinois.
Very explosive.
He pinned Davis in the outing a month ago.
But Davis was ahead when he got pinned.
Yeah.
Davis I watched him win the state title last year.
Very talented.
Also seen counter Kidd become an All-American.
So you got a veteran against a young guy.
Both very talented.
This should be good.
On your feet.
Stalemate.
Neutral.
And if you're Luther College.
gentleman who just got behind six to nothing and you got your All-American out there, you want to not only hopefully get a win, you'd want a big win if you can.
They'd like to duplicate what happened in January 9th, just a month ago when Kidd got the fall against CJ Davis.
CJ Davis is trying to remember how he got out in front 6 to 1 before he saw the lights.
Oh, and there's a roll through CJ Davis comes around drives through.
Good down block by Kidd.
Good scrap here.
You know Connor Kidd has 50 career pins.
So he's a he's a pinner.
He'll go for it if he gets an opportunity.
[LAUGHTER] We're neutral.
On the edge.
Nothing happening.
[APPLAUSE] I like the way CJ is wrestling there.
Both of them.
But they're wrestling like they're in the middle of the match.
You know, if you can keep a foot in a toe in and you score on the edge of the mat, it's good.
You got to be all the way out of bounds before the wrestling stops.
Big start for central Dutch Carter West coming through with a big fall late in the third period.
It's six zero.
Team score central out in front after one.
Above the eyes, man above the eyes.
Schott now.
About a minute left.
First period.
And we've had two great crowds in a row the Iowa State.
South Dakota State at Humboldt Gymnasium.
Standing room only here tonight.
Practically packed students out the local Pella community.
There's a slide by.
Davis behind.
Nice defense by Kidd.
Great job by Kidd squaring back up.
Now he's got to circle back in.
Oh big duck under.
[APPLAUSE] Can he finish.
He lifts you up neutral.
Can he stay in bounds.
No.
Nice call by the official.
Wow.
There.
He's.
There you go, man.
I mean, Davis, right.
Nice duck under all the way behind.
Has to get a knee or get him down.
But but but Connor Kidd fended it off.
Knew where he was to got him out.
Knew what direction to go with his movement.
That's twice now.
Davis was real close on a takedown.
Had to slide by as a duck under.
He's got a lot of lot in his arsenal.
Jim.
[LAUGHTER] [LAUGHTER] I like the way that CJ Davis moves forward into the first period.
No takedown, no scoring zero zero.
The choice goes to the Norse.
Kidd chooses down to begin the second period.
[APPLAUSE] Gets up short pause after coverage, cover legal.
[APPLAUSE] Kidd gets up.
He's gone.
He's out one to nothing now.
Davis.
Hey, obviously he's really good on his feet.
He likes being on his feet.
So given that escape was probably part of the plan here.
Both these guys, physical wrestlers.
I like the way CJ is working the head as he comes up from a little half shot collar tie is kid's ammunition there.
Oh nice shot, but good defense by CJ.
Five freshmen in the lineup for central.
Nine of the ten wrestlers tonight for central are prep prepped in Iowa.
They're Iowans.
Wow that's impressive.
You don't see that very often no matter what what what school it is what college it is.
And we got a scrap here.
Dead even.
Almost one to nothing, kid.
Just from the escape.
The stall warning.
Ready.
And because kid's been more active, there's the stall call.
Well, I think it's one of those where I think the official felt he needed to call one, because it seems like up until that time, that Davis had actually been pretty active.
[LAUGHTER] Yeah.
[LAUGHTER] Stay legal here.
Terrible shot.
30s left.
Second period.
Two.
Good action by Davis.
He's got to pull the trigger there.
Really nice fakes.
He's got to follow it up.
Coming down to the end of the second period A10 lead for Kidd.
He got right out Jones.
Will Davis will have the opportunity to go down and create his own offense and perhaps get away fast.
I think he's going to go neutral.
He go neutral.
Not on top.
Gotta have a takedown anyway.
Yeah.
Gotta have a takedown.
On West.
So or Kidd is.
Kidd will be on top.
Oh nice double shot.
Body lock inside trip.
Nothing going man.
Davis has had some opportunities, but Connor Kidd has been really good fending him off.
One zero for the Norse Connor Kidd out in front.
He had an escape and CJ Davis chose neutral, so he chose not to go under to begin the third period, knowing he's going to have to get a takedown anyway.
[LAUGHTER] [APPLAUSE] A minute 25 left in regulation.
A couple of good shots here might bring the officials attention on Kidd.
Plus, you got him right on the edge.
You know.
And so right now, with the rules, if you can walk him out right there, you would get an automatic stall call Kidd doing a nice job of not letting him walk him out.
Stalemate, stalemate.
They'll go to the center.
Yeah.
CJ Davis had an attempt there, a double attempt or something to get him off the mat to get a chance for the stall call.
But it's going to come down to this last minute.
[LAUGHTER] [APPLAUSE] As my partner says, every second, every point counts.
Well right now it's a it's the seconds that count 45 seconds central calling for a stall call here.
[APPLAUSE] On the edge again.
Circle back in.
My rule action back to the center.
Well.
We did a really nice job of of coming back around.
He's savvy.
Really, really nice.
Dodge.
25 seconds.
Davis arm spin.
He's in on the leg.
Good.
Squares up.
He's looking for that duck again.
I think right here.
Davis.
Now a carry action.
Connor Kidd just so solid right there.
He's not going to give anything up.
Five seconds left.

Tell you what, when he pulls the trigger, he is dangerous, man.
And it shows up right there.
Quick takedown.
Baldwin out of West Chicago high school was an All-American last year.
Sixth in 2025.
He pinned Ochoa a month ago in two minutes.
Yeah, that could be something similar.
Could really be big for the team results.
But you know, Baldwin All-American from last year, the leader of the team here.
And you could tell a fan favorite as well.
But look how quick that is.
Nice high crotch.

First period being three minutes.
Second third period being two minutes.
I'm sure Coach Williams talked to him about hey, let's get a fast start because sometimes he doesn't have a fast start.

One point escape for Ochoa six two.
Right now, early in the first period.
Baldwin got his head on the mat, got some pressure there trying to do, trying to get a go behind.

[LAUGHTER] So starting on their feet.
Joe kind of trying to stay a little bit lower.
Make it tougher for Baldwin to get to the legs.

[APPLAUSE] [LAUGHTER] Advantage he could cut him and get one more takedown.
It'd be over.
But yeah, well, it'd be 18 four, but I think he really just trying to see if he can't get a pinning combination right.

Later we did the Iowa Iowa State meet and that was at the Fieldhouse, the Iowa's old rickety old fieldhouse on that great big huge mat they had.
And it was in the middle of a blizzard.
We had three carloads of crew going Iowa City to cover it, and two of them went in the ditch.
So but we covered it with a limited coverage.

We had to kind of develop a kind of a new formula, if you will, or what we thought worked in our minds.
There was virtually no wrestling coverage on television back in the 70s.
So but we thought, you know, the important thing is to be kind of at a, at a mat level, you need that overhead perspective to see where the wrestlers are in relation to the mat.
To us, the beauty of it is the close ups.
And so we developed having our cameras on what they call lowboys tripods on wheels that are only a foot off the ground.

We've had it this year.
It's been so exciting.
I loved it, fast pace and those girls, women getting after it.
Speaking of fast pace, this meet tonight's been fast.
Paced.
And you know there's just nothing like having a crowd like we've had tonight been ruckus.
It's exciting.

I mean, you got to be really strategic, and you're looking for the good look, that angle you don't want to shoot underneath.
It doesn't matter how heavy you are.
That's a lot of weight on top of you.
You go straight in, you get flattened out.
Yeah.
You got to get a good angle.
You got to have good hand fight.
Give yourself a chance.
Give yourself an opening.
But here's these two.
Just like that nice little drag action right to a single.
Almost had the single.
Nelson from Luther.
[APPLAUSE] [APPLAUSE] Minute left in the first period.
No points.
A lot of pushing, a lot of trying to get those their underhooks.

Oh, and all of a sudden Neeway comes back.
Neeway comes back.
Back to the center.
Yeah.
Both both guys are big.
Both guys look athletic.
They got an exciting, high paced match here.
As a matter of will one get tired?
[APPLAUSE] No score in the first period.
We'll go to the second period.
Green bottom.
