Hi, everyone!

I'm Mr. G. And, I was just talking to a very important word: resilience.

Resilience is a big word that means having the ability to overcome difficulties.

It's about finding the positive in challenging situations.

Let me introduce you to... resilience!

♪ Hey, resilience!

Where'd you go?

♪ Are you scared?

(peep-peep!)

Why?

♪ Oh, because you're feeling shy?

(peep-peep!)

Okay, I understand.

Well, let me tell you about today's story and we'll see if that makes you feel any better.

The title of this book is called "Make the Best of It!

", written by Georgette Baker and illustrations by Eric Shaffer.

♪ (reads) "My popsicle is melting.

"What goes through my head?

"Somehow make the best of it.

"I had a slushy instead.

"I wanted to ride, but it started to snow.

"What goes through my head?

"Somehow make the best of it.

"I'll make a snowman instead!

"I lost my blue crayon.

"What goes through my head?

"Somehow make the best of it.

"I will color the sky red.

"I see shadows moving around my room.

"Somehow make the best of it.

"I will make shadow puppets instead.

"Mom told me to clean my room, agh!

"I will sing to music while I work, instead.

"I can change how I see things.

"I can turn them around.

"By being creative and willing, "another way can be found!

I don't know what's going on with Barry, but I sure hope he finds a solution.

(horn honking) [dog barks] - Excuse me, [cat meowing] cat's got my tongue.

[sheep bleating] I'm feeling kind of sheepish, suddenly!

[lion roaring] Oh, for goodness sake!

What is wrong with me?

[donkey braying] [kids laughing] It's not funny!

[crickets chirping] (horn honking) - Okay!

I think I'm finally making progress.

It's taken a lot of trial and error and imagination to figure it out, but with some minor adjustments and a ton of patience, my robot is finally going to work.

I'm excited.

I just need to find the pieces that fit together.

I'll start with these wires.

If I match up the same colors together, we should be in business.

Blue goes with blue, (ding!)

yellow pairs with yellow.

(ding!)

I can't tell if this is red or orange.

(beeping) That wasn't right.

The socket must have broken when he fell apart.

What am I going to do?

How will I have a soccer-playing robot, if he doesn't have any legs?

I better put on my thinking cap.

(playful horn honking) [monkey screeching] - Life can be a jungle, my friends, [rhino wailing] but when the going gets tough, you've got to grab it by the horns.

[elephant trumpeting] Or, tusks!

[rattlesnake rattling] And, shake it off!

[lion roaring] [toilet flushing] Or else, you'll just go down the drain!

This is getting ridiculous.

Let's go back to Mr. G's room.

[car horn honking] Somebody make it stop!

(playful horn honking) - Poor Barry the Bell.

He's having a really rough day.

And, so is Eddie.

He's also facing some obstacles.

(peep-peep!)

But, I know they'll make the best of it because they're willing and creative.

Hey, you wanna hear something interesting?

There are so many amazing inventions that actually started out as mistakes.

But because scientists were resilient and came up with creative solutions to their problems, they not only made the best of it, things turned out even better than planned!

Let's look at this video and you can see what I'm talking about.

- [Narrator] We should always learn from our mistakes in order to help us succeed in whatever we try.

Let's take a look at a few mistakes throughout history that wound up being a huge success.

♪ Would you believe that chocolate chip cookies were made by mistake?

It's true.

Ruth Wakefield was preparing cookies for her guests when she realized that she was out of baker's chocolate.

So, she decided to chop up a chocolate candy bar into little pieces thinking that it would melt and spread evenly throughout the batter.

But, that's not what happened.

The chocolate chips softened, [clock ticking] but they didn't melt.

[alarm sound] She served them to her guests anyway, and they were delighted!

Cookies have never been the same since!

♪ Frozen popsicles are the perfect treat on a hot summer day.

But, funny enough, they were accidentally discovered one cold evening.

Eleven-year-old Frank Epperson mixed some sugary soda powder with water and accidentally left it outside.

It froze during the chilly night, and when he woke up the next day to find this flavored icicle with the stirrer sticking out, he discovered just how delicious this new icy delight was.

This soda pop icicle soon be came known as the "popsicle."

♪ If you've ever been sick because of a bacterial infection- and you probably have- chances are you've taken medicine to help you feel better.

Penicillin, the amazing and revolutionary medicine used to treat these types of diseases, was also discovered by accident.

Scientist Dr. Alexander Fleming was working in his lab one night and forgot to throw away his experiment of bacteria cultures, before he went on vacation.

When he returned from his trip, he saw that fungus had grown on the bacteria and destroyed it.

He nicknamed it "mold juice," but soon it became penicillin, and has since changed medicine forever!

So, just remember: sometimes success is what we make of it.

And, our mistakes can teach us, give us new opportunities, or wind up being a world-changing invention!

- [Mr. G] Can you even imagine a world without chocolate chip cookies?

♪ Me neither.

They're my favorite!

[high-pitched squeak] [Barry giggles] - [Barry] That tickles!

- I'm not even gonna ask.

(playful horn honking) - [Eddie] Hold still, Barry.

(Barry giggles) - [Barry] I'm trying, but you found my funny bone.

I'm ticklish!

(metal rattling) (doink!)

Yowsers!

That... (bell rings) worked!

You fixed me, Eddie!

I'm not barking or mooing or meowing.

How'd you do it, Eddie?

- With some good old fashioned resilience.

Where there's a will, there's a way.

(bell ringing) - Muchos gracias!

How can I thank you?

- You can be the announcer for my robot's first soccer game at the science fair.

- You betcha!

But, first, we need to go back to Mr. G's classroom and see an instant replay of the day.

(bell ringing) (horn honking) (slaps hands) - What a day!

It sure wasn't the easiest, but it made us stronger.

Having resilience is so important when you're faced with life's ups and downs.

Remember what it means to have resilience.

It's having the ability to overcome difficulties and finding positive creative solutions in challenging situations.

Remember earlier when you felt shy and you wanted to hide, but then we read the story, "Make the Best of It", and you found your courage!

(reads) "I can change how I see things.

"I can turn them around.

"By being creative and willing, "another way can be found!

"So, when you get a lemon "and have a sad heart and head, "see the best in your life and make lemonade instead."

And, how about Eddie and his robot?

I have to admit, I was a little worried when it fell apart.

But, Eddie stuck it out and he found solutions along the way.

- I need to figure out how this attaches.

♪ So, I guess this goes... here!

(ding!)

- And then, there's Barry the Bell.

He sure had an unexpected day!

Then, Eddie took one of the springs left over from his robot and made Barry as good as new!

(metal rattling) (doink!)

- Yowsers!

That... (bell rings) worked!

You fixed me, Eddie.

- Oh, hey.

I wonder what they're doing down at the science fair.

I think the robot is playing in his first soccer game.

I can't wait to see what happens.

Let's go to the field!

(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) - [Barry] Welcome to the science fair!

Our next contestant is Eddie and his soccer-playing robot.

Let the game begin!

(bell ringing) Let's go, robot!

Let's go!

(clap-clap!)

This resilient robot did not have an easy day, folks.

It's amazing that he's even in one piece.

Thanks to Eddie's creative solutions, he found a way to fix it.

And he fixed me, too!

Here comes Eddie.

Up the middle.

He kicks the ball.

What a shot!

Is it going in?

(doink!)

Blocked!

[fans cheering] Wow!

Did you see that?

I think we have a science fair winner!

- [Eddie] Success!

We did it!

- Success, indeed!

Yo soy Señor Adán.

Estaba hablando con una palabra muy importante, resiliencia.

Resiliencia es una palabra grande que significa tener la capacidad de superar las dificultades.

Se trata de ser valiente, y no rendirse, para encontrar lo positivo en situaciones difíciles.

Déjeme presentarles la palabra, "resiliencia."

¡Ah!

Oye, resiliencia, ¿pa' donde te fuiste?

♪ ¿Por que?

♪ Ahh, ¿por qué te sientes tímida.

"¿Quéme pongo a pensar?

Hice un liquado para tomar.

"Quería montar bicicleta, pero comenzó a nevar.

"Haré un muñeco de nieve en su lugar!

"Perdí mi lápiz azul.

¿Qué me pongo a pensar?

"Haz lo mejor posible.

"Con el lápiz rojo voy a pintar.

"Veo sombras mover en mi cuarto.

Todos nos ponemos nerviosos y nos da miedo cuando enfrentamos desafíos o dificultades.

Pero tienes que seguir adelante cuando no triunfas la primera vez.

Y no se te olvide, que todos tenemos dificultades, hasta los adultos.

Pero entiende, qué sí podemos vencer cualquier cosa, con una poca de, "Resiliencia."

[canto de gallo] Creo que eso quiere decir que, se nos acabó el tiempo.

No sé qué está pasando con Barry, pero espero que muy pronto se arregle.

[vaca mugiendo] Muy pronto!

(bocina jugetona) [perro ledrando] - [Barry] Ayy, perdón!

[gato maullando] ¡Me tragé un gato!

[oveja balando] De repente, eh, me siento un poco avergonzado.

[léon rugiendo] Ayy, ¡QUE ME PASA?!

[burro rebuznando] [niños riendo] ¡¡Ya, por favor!!

No se rían, ¿eh?

[grillos chirriando] (bocina jugetona) - Muy bien, creo que por fin estoy progresando.

Ha sido muy difícil, pero con mucho esfuerzo, imaginación y paciencia, así como unos pequeños ajustes, parece que mi robot va a funcionar.

¡Me siento muy emocionado!

Solo tengo que encontrar, en donde van estos últimos pedacitos.

A ver, vamos a comenzar con estos alambres.

¡Si los conecto según su color, creo que estaremos listos!

♪ Azul va con azul.

(¡timbre!)

Amarillo con amarillo.

(¡timbre!)

¿Rojo va con...?

Ayy, no puedo ver si este es rojo o color naranja.

Bueno, ni modo, vamos a ver.

¿Qué es lo peor que puede pasar?

(pitido) Eso no está bien.

Vamos a ver qué pasa ahora.

One more time.

Rojo...va con... ¿rojo?

(¡timbre!)

(zumbido eléctrico) ¡Órale!

Ahora, viene algo más difícil.

Conectando los brazos.

Vamos a ver, necesito averiguar cómo se conecta todo esto.

Esto ya se está poniendo ridículo.

(bocina jugetona) - [Sr. Adán] Pobre campanita Barry.

Está teniendo un día muy difícil.

Y Eddie también, está enfrentando unos obstáculos, ¿verdad?

Pero yo sé que van a aprovechar y triunfar porque ellos están dispuestos y son creativos.

Oye, ¿quieres saber algo interesante?

Hay muchos inventos sorprendentes que en realidad comenzaron como errores.

Si, ¡es verdad!

Pero como los científicos eran resilientes, usaron su creatividad para buscar y encontrar nuevas soluciones para esos problemas.

No solamente aprovecharon para "Hacer lo Mejor Posible," pero las cosas resultaron mejor de lo que habían pensado.

Veamos un video para que veas de lo que hablo.

¡Echemos un vistazo a algunos errores, que, a lo largo de la historia, terminaron siendo un gran éxito!

♪ ¿Puedes creer que las galletitas de chocolate fueron creadas por error?

¡Es verdad!

Ruth Wakefield estaba preparando galletas para sus invitados cuando se dio cuenta de que no tenía chocolate de panadería.

Entonces, ella decidió cortar una barra de chocolate en pedacitos pequeños, pensando que se iban a derretir y mezclase por toda la masa.

¡Se congeló durante la noche fría y cuando Frank despertó al día siguiente, encontró una delicia congelada alrededor del palito que uso para mezclarlo, y descubrió lo sabroso que era esta nueva delicia helada!

Esta paleta de refresco congelado pronto se conoció como la '¡paleta helada!

'- o, ¡el Popsicle!

♪ Si alguna vez has tenido una infección bacteriana- y sospecho que si- es probable que te hayas tomado medicina para que te sientas mejor, ¿verdad?

La penicilina, la impresionante y maravillosa medicina que se usa para combatir este tipo de enfermedad, también fue descubierta por casualidad.

El científico Dr. Alexander Fleming estaba experimentando con cultivos de bacterias en su laboratorio, y la noche antes de irse de vacaciones, se le olvidó guardarlas.

Cuando regresó de su viaje, vio que un hongo había crecido encima la bacteria y la había destruido.

Lo nombro "jugo de moho", pero pronto se convirtió en penicilina, y desde entonces la medicina cambio para siempre.

Es muy importante entender, qué a veces, el éxito es lo que hacemos con él y podemos aprender de nuestros errores.

Nos pueden brindar nuevas oportunidades, o pueden resultar siendo un invento que cambiará el mundo.

♪ - ¡¿Te puedes imaginar un mundo sin galletitas de chocolate?!

Yo tampoco, ¡son mis favoritas!

[Barry riendo] - ¡Ay, eso me da cosquillas!

- [Sr. Adán] Por favor, ni lo quiero saber.

[chillido agudo] (bocina jugetona) - ¡Quédate quieto, Barry!

[Barry riendo] - Ay, eso me da cosquillas.

(traqueteo de metal) (¡timbre!)

¡Híjole!

Eso... (sonido de campana) ¡FUNCIONA!

¡Me arreglaste, Eddie!

No estoy ladrando, mugiendo o maullando.

(sonido de campana) ¡Si!

¡Recupere mi ding!

Eddie, ¿cómo lo hiciste?

- Con pura resiliencia, autentica.

¡Cuando tenemos ánimo y voluntad, podemos encontrar la solución!

Es importante tener resiliencia cuando la vida se pone difícil.

¿Se acuerdan qué quiere decir la palabra "resiliencia"?

Es cuando usamos nuestra capacidad de superar las dificultades, y encontramos soluciones creativas y positivas en situaciones difíciles.

♪ Te acuerdas, hace poco, ¿cuándo te sentías tímida y te querías esconder?

Pero luego leímos el cuento de "Haz lo Mejor Posible", y encontraste tu ánimo y valor.

(leyendo un libro) "Puedo ser creativo, "sonreír en vez de llorar, "cambiar lo que siento adentro, "buscar como disfrutar.

"Así que cuando te llega un limón, "sientes tristeza y te quieres quejar, "busca lo mejor en tu vida y haz limonada en su lugar."

¿Y qué de Eddie y su robot?

Tengo que decir, yo estaba un poco preocupado cuando se desbarató.

Pero Eddie se quedó en eso, y encontró soluciones.

¡Lo arregló!

- [Eddie] Necesito averiguar cómo se conecta todo esto.

¿Esto te queda?

Hmm...vamos a hacer algo más.

¡Me supongo que va aquí!

(¡timbre!)

- Y también, no se nos olvide de la Campana Barry.

Él tuvo un día muy difícil.

Pero entonces, Eddie le puso a Barry un resorte que le sobró del robot, ¡y quedó como nuevo!

(traqueteo de metal) (¡timbre!)

- ¡Híjole!

Eso... (sonido de campana) ¡FUNCIONA!

¡Me arreglaste, Eddie!

- Oye, ¿cómo les habrá ido en la feria de ciencias?

Creo que el robot está jugando su primer partido de fútbol.

No puedo esperar a ver qué pasa.

¡Vamos a la cancha!

(bocina jugetona) (sonido de campana) - [Barry] ¡Bienvenidos a la Feria de Ciencias!
