Welcome to my web comments on the Saturday Night Cinema broadcast of “Mansfield Park” from 1999.
I'm Mikayla Daniels here to share a bit more about the film.
In my web blog for “Emma”, the other recent Jane Austen adaptation I hosted on Saturday Night Cinema, I mentioned the brighter tone of the costuming.
That is not the case for Mansfield Park.
Here we see that the design of the film is muted, colors dull, and sets dilapidated, while Mansfield Park is still understood to be a grand home belonging to a wealthy family.
Its interior decor is a constant hint at the issues being explored throughout the film.
The interiors of Mansfield Park are dilapidated, large and cold.
Exposed brick walls and crumbling plaster suggests, on the surface, neglect or poverty.
Maybe a wealthy family whose star is on the decline.
This film seems to be deeply concerned with issues of morality, the state of dilapidation evident in the houses, directly related to the morality of the characters who occupies those spaces, while on the outside the house looks to be a spectacular country house.
On the inside it crumbles and is a sad version of the projected reality.
There are no colorful wallpapers, thick rugs or bright colors to liven up Mansfield Park.
The house instead reflects the character of those who occupy it.
Interestingly, in Brazil, the film is titled Palácio das Ilusões Palace of illusions seems to fit very well with the ideas presented here.
I mentioned in my on air intro that much is changed from the book to the film, including many characters.
One of them, of course, being Fanny.
The character of Fanny Price is meant to represent Jane Austen herself in this film, which is strengthened by her being an aspiring writer.
The various stories that Fanny price writes are actually Jane Austen's Juvenilia, written when she was a teenager.
Another piece that ties Fanny and Austen is that Jane Austen received a proposal from Harris Bigg-Wither, which she accepted and then changed her mind about the next morning.
Mirroring this, Fanny Price at first accepts and then changes her mind about Henry Crawford's proposal in this version of Mansfield Park.
A fun piece of casting trivia for this film, Jonny Lee Miller played one of Fanny Price's young brothers, Charles Price, in the 1983 version of Mansfield Park, and then went on to play the hero Edmund Bertram in this 1999 version.
He is also plays the hero George Knightley of the 2009 version of Emma.
I hope you enjoyed my extended comments on Mansfield Park, and be sure to look around our Facebook page and KSPS.org from our blogs, polls, and trivia from all the host and Movie Maverick Mike.
And don't forget to tune into Saturday Night Cinema on KSPS PBS.
