NOW I KNOW WHY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TELLING ME ABOUT YOUR SHOP.
TELL ME, WHAT ARE THE VARIOUS ASPECTS OF YOUR BUSINESS?
AND THEN DESCRIBE THE STORE ITSELF.
- WE'VE BEEN IN BUSINESS ABOUT 22 YEARS, SO WE'VE DONE LOTS OF DIFFERENT THINGS OVER THAT 22-YEAR PERIOD.
OUR STORE RIGHT NOW IS ABOUT 7,000 SQUARE FEET, SO WE'RE A VERY LARGE QUILT SHOP IN THE SEATTLE AREA.
WE'RE PRETTY WELL-KNOWN NATIONALLY BECAUSE WE ARE ON THE INTERNET AND WE DO A BIG TOURIST BUSINESS.
IT SEEMS LIKE WHEN TRAVELERS COME TO SEATTLE, THEY JUST KNOW WHERE TO GO.
WE DO LOTS OF DIFFERENT THINGS IN THE STORE, AND WE HAVE DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS THAT ARE VERY SUCCESSFUL.
WE HAVE A SMALL HOME DECK DEPARTMENT THAT QUILTERS DO USE TO MAKE QUILTS.
WE HAVE A JAPANESE DEPARTMENT WHERE WE'RE QUILTING FOR CONTEMPORARY CLOTHING.
WE HAVE ALL THE DIFFERENT LINES OF QUILT FABRICS.
WE HAVE A GIFT DEPARTMENT, WHICH HAS BEEN VERY POPULAR.
WE HAVE A LARGE BOOK DEPARTMENT, PROBABLY THE LARGEST QUILT BOOK DEPARTMENT IN THE NORTHWEST.
WE HAVE A LARGE AMOUNT OF CLASSES THAT COVER JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING WE DO IN THE STORE.
WE HAVE HOME DECK CLASSES, NURSERY CLASSES, CONTEMPORARY CLOTHING CLASSES, LOTS OF EXCITING THINGS FOR ALL THE NORTHWEST QUILTERS.
- YOU HAVE LINES OF FABRIC.
HAVEN'T I SEEN IN THE BEGINNING ON LABELS OF CLOTH?
- RIGHT NOW WE ARE DOING OUR OWN LINE OF FABRIC, AND THAT'S SOLD THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.
PEOPLE CAN FIND IT IN THEIR OWN QUILT SHOPS.
ABOUT FIVE YEARS AGO, I STARTED DOING A LINE OF FABRIC FOR NORTHCOTT WHICH WAS A CANADIAN COMPANY.
I STARTED DOING THAT BECAUSE THE SALESMAN WOULD COME IN AND I WOULD SAY, "WHY DON'T YOU DO THIS?
WHY DON'T YOU DO THAT?
HOW ABOUT DOING THIS OTHER THING?"
ONE DAY ONE OF THE SALESMEN JUST SAID, "WHY DON'T YOU DESIGN A LINE OF FABRIC FOR US?"
SO I DID THAT, AND THAT WAS PRETTY SUCCESSFUL FOR SEVERAL YEARS.
WE DECIDED THEN THAT WE WOULD DO OUR OWN LINE OF FABRIC, AND THAT'S WHAT IS HAPPENING.
- WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TRENDS IN THE QUILT BUSINESS OVER THE YEARS?
HAVE YOU SEEN THE PROGRESSION AND CHANGES?
- I THINK IT'S PRETTY INTERESTING BECAUSE BEING IN BUSINESS 22 YEARS, WE STARTED WITH A LOG CABIN, AND FOR YEARS WE SOLD FABRIC FOR THE LOG CABIN.
THEN THINGS STARTED CHANGING.
WE GOT INTO MORE OTHER TRADITIONAL FAST-CUTTING KINDS OF THINGS.
WE GOT INTO CONTEMPORARY THINGS.
NOW WHAT I THINK IS INTERESTING IS WE'RE BACK DOING THE LOG CABIN AGAIN.
I CONSTANTLY SAY TO MY STAFF WHEN THEY SUGGEST A CLASS, "HAVEN'T WE ALREADY DONE THAT?
DIDN'T WE DO THAT 10 YEARS AGO?"
IT'S WONDERFUL BECAUSE WE'RE FINDING NEW QUILTERS ALL THE TIME.
- THAT'S IMPORTANT IN OUR BUSINESS.
- I THINK SO.
- ANY SECRETS TO PASS ON FOR PROSPECTIVE SHOP OWNERS?
- I GET QUESTIONS ALL THE TIME ABOUT STARTING A QUILT SHOP.
I THINK IF YOU'RE PLANNING ON STARTING A QUILT SHOP, OBVIOUSLY YOU NEED A LOT OF MONEY, SO YOU MAY WANT TO MORTGAGE YOUR HOUSE.
THE NEXT THING, YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR FAMILY IS VERY COOPERATIVE.
YOU NEED TO HAVE A COOPERATIVE HUSBAND AND COOPERATIVE CHILDREN.
ONCE YOU GET THOSE THREE THINGS, YOU'RE READY TO GO.
- TALKING ABOUT CHILDREN, I UNDERSTAND THE VICE PRESIDENT OF YOUR CORPORATION IS YOUR SON, NOT ONLY WORKING IN THE SHOP, BUT HE'S A CONTEMPORARY QUILTER ALSO.
- MY SON JASON STARTED WHEN HE WAS-- I STARTED THE SHOP WHEN HE WAS 8 YEARS OLD.
HE STARTED DOING THE JANITORIAL WORK ON SUNDAYS.
THAT WAS OUR TIME TOGETHER AND HAS CONTINUED ON, IS A CONTEMPORARY QUILTER, GOT HIS BUSINESS FINANCE DEGREE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON.
HE'S KIND OF VERY WELL-ROUNDED, SO HE NOW RUNS OUR WHOLESALE BUSINESS.
- SO YOU DIDN'T JUST STICK WITH OUR CLASSES, THOUGH.
I BET YOU'VE GONE INTO BUSINESS FIELD.
- OH, WE'VE DONE IT ALL, LOTS OF ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE AS WELL, WHICH IS SOMETHING THAT'S REAL IMPORTANT IF YOU'RE GOING TO BE IN THIS BUSINESS, AS WELL AS THE ARTISTIC APPROACH.
- WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THE QUILT MARKET.
I DON'T KNOW IF THE GENERAL PUBLIC REALIZES THAT YOU CAN GO PLACES TO TRAIN TO BE A QUILT SHOP OWNER, AND I THINK THAT'S AN ASSET, DON'T YOU?
- I THINK SO.
THE QUILT MARKET IS HELD TWICE A YEAR, AND THERE ARE MANY CLASSES OFFERED, BUSINESS CLASSES, CLASSES ON BUYING, CLASSES ON DIFFERENT KINDS OF LESSONS YOU CAN TEACH.
IT'S A REALLY WONDERFUL THING.
I THINK IF ANYBODY IS THINKING OF OPENING A QUILT SHOP, THAT THAT WOULD BE THE FIRST PLACE TO GO.
- WELL, I IMAGINE IT'S HARD TO SQUEEZE IN THE QUILTING TIME WHEN YOU'RE SO INVOLVED IN THE BUSINESS PART, ISN'T IT?
- YOU'RE VERY RIGHT.
VERY LITTLE TIME FOR QUILTING BETWEEN THE BUSINESS ASPECT AND LIFE IN GENERAL.

WE ARE AT THE SECOND CLASS OF THE SCRAPBOOK QUILT CLASS WITH SANDY BONSIB, AND SHE IS FROM SEATTLE.
I WANT YOU TO TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CLASS, AND THEN WE'RE GOING TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT LOPSIDED LOG CABINS.
WHAT ARE WE GOING TO SEE THIS EVENING?
- WELL, THIS EVENING YOU'LL SEE THE SECOND CLASS.
LAST WEEK PEOPLE CAME WITH PHOTOS TRANSFERRED ONTO PHOTO TRANSFER PAPER LIKE THIS.
WE PRESSED IT USING THE PRESS, THE T-SHIRT PRESS THAT IN THE BEGINNING OWNS.
WE TALKED ABOUT BLOCKS AND THINGS WE'D LIKE TO DO TO GET THE QUILTS TOGETHER, POSSIBLE BORDERS, POSSIBLE SETTINGS.
PEOPLE WENT HOME, WORKED ON THEIR BLOCKS THROUGHOUT THE WEEK, AND BROUGHT THEM BACK TONIGHT.
NOW WE'RE GOING TO DO THE FINISHING.
- I WOULD IMAGINE A LOT OF THE INSPIRATION WAS SEEING THE FINISHED QUILTS THAT YOU'VE BEEN TEACHING THIS FOR ABOUT A YEAR.
- YES.
- JUST MEANDERING THROUGH THE STORE AND SEEING WHAT PEOPLE HAVE PUT OUT, IT JUST TOUCHES YOUR HEART.
IT BECOMES A REAL SENTIMENTAL TRIP AND VERY PERSONAL FOR EVERYONE, ISN'T IT?
- DEFINITELY.
AND MOST PEOPLE LIKE TO DO QUILTS THAT INVOLVE FAMILY MEMBERS, WHETHER IT'S THEIR CHILDREN, THEIR SPOUSES, OR THEIR PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS.
- OKAY.
YOU FIND THAT WHEN YOU'RE DOING THIS CLASS-- I THINK THIS IS A SUPER SUGGESTION-- TO AUDITION DIFFERENT FABRICS DEPENDING ON YOUR PICTURE.
DOES THAT MEAN EACH TIME YOU HAVE TO-- YOU THROW AWAY THE PICTURE AFTER YOU IRON IT ON, RIGHT?
- YES.
YOU CAN ONLY USE THE TRANSFER ONCE.
IN ORDER TO DO THESE FOUR PICTURES, WHICH ARE THE SAME PICTURE, BUT ON FOUR DIFFERENT FABRICS AND DIFFERENT COLORS AND DIFFERENT WEAVES, I ACTUALLY HAD TO DO FOUR TRANSFERS.
I DON'T DO THAT ALL THE TIME, BUT IT'S A FUN AND INTERESTING THING TO DO.
MOST OF THE QUILTS THAT PEOPLE ARE MAKING FROM THIS CLASS ARE HEIRLOOMS, AND THEY REALLY INTEND TO KEEP THEM FOR MANY, MANY YEARS AND MAYBE HAND THEM DOWN.
SO CONSEQUENTLY, SPENDING A FEW EXTRA DOLLARS TO PLAY AROUND WITH THE TRANSFER PROCESS AND SEE IF A PHOTO LOOKS WONDERFUL ON TAN OR NOT AS GOOD ON WHITE OR MAYBE SOMETHING ELSE LIKE A SEASCAPE LIKE THIS ONE LOOKS WONDERFUL WITH THE TEXTURE OF OSNABURG.
- I THINK THAT'S A VERY GOOD HINT.
NOW, YOU ARE MAKING YOUR ENTRY INTO THE QUILT WORLD BY BEING PUBLISHED FIRST WITH A FOLK ART-- TELL ME THE TITLE OF THAT BOOK.
- IT'S "FOLK ART QUILTS-- A FRESH LOOK."
THEN THIS PHOTO TRANSFER WILL BE YOUR SECOND BOOK.
- THAT'S RIGHT.
- SO WE'RE GETTING TWO-IN-ONE TONIGHT.

- WELL, WE HAVE.
WE'VE EITHER MADE COURTHOUSE STEP OR LOG CABIN BLOCKS, AND AFTER THE BLOCK IS FINISHED, WE CUT THEM FUNNY.
SO THEY'RE EASY TO MAKE AND FUN TO MAKE.
SHOW ME WHAT YOU MEAN BY FUNNY.
THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF A COURTHOUSE STEP BLOCK DONE IN FLANNEL.
THEN WHAT WE DO IS WE TAKE OUR ROTARY CUTTER AND OUR RULER, AND OUR FIRST CUT IS JUST MAKE IT AN ANGLE.
IT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER WHICH ANGLE.
OF COURSE, WE USUALLY LIKE TO KEEP THESE EVEN THOUGH WE DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DO WITH THEM.
THEN WE TURN THE BLOCK, AND THE SIDE THAT WE JUST CUT IS CLOSEST TO US.
THEN FROM NOW ON, IT'S REALLY EASY.
WE USE ANY LINE OF THE RULER, WE PUT IT ALONG THE EDGE THAT WE JUST CUT, AND THEN WE AUTOMATICALLY, WHEN WE CUT AGAIN, WE'LL GET A 90-DEGREE ANGLE, - OH, I SEE.
- WHICH MEANS THAT AS WE WORK OUR WAY AROUND ON ALL FOUR SIDES, WE'RE GOING TO END UP WITH A SQUARE OR A RECTANGLE, BUT IT'S GOING TO BE ASKEW.
- AHA.
NOW, THERE COULD BE A SPECIAL PICTURE ALREADY IN HERE.
- YES.
OKAY.
I SEE.
- YES, THERE CAN BE A SPECIAL PICTURE ALREADY TRANSFERRED ONTO FABRIC IN THERE, OR THERE CAN BE APPLIQUES, OR YOU CAN USE A NOVELTY PRINT AND CUT IT, FUSSY CUT IT, AND USE IT AS THE CENTERS.
- I'LL LET YOU DO ONE MORE HERE, AND THEN TELL ME-- I LOVE THE TITLE OF THIS QUILT A LITTLE BIT.
WHO DID THIS ONE?
SUE VAN GERPEN MADE THIS QUILT, AND IT'S FOR HER MOTHER-IN-LAW.
SUE HAS A WONDERFUL MOTHER-IN-LAW WHO HAS MADE MANY SPECIAL THINGS FOR HER.
SUE'S MOTHER-IN-LAW HAS SEVEN FRIENDS, AND THEY HAVE BEEN FRIENDS SINCE HIGH SCHOOL.
SO SUE HAS TAKEN A VERY FEW PICTURES-- A LOT OF TIMES WITH THESE QUILTS, LESS IS MORE-- AND SHE'S TAKEN A VERY FEW PICTURES AND SOME CURRENT ONES AND APPLIQUED THEM ON THE FRONT OF THE QUILT WITH THE HEARTS.
AND JUST IN A VERY SIMPLE MANNER, TOO.
VERY SIMPLE, YES.
THE RAW EDGES, THE PEARL COTTON DONE WITH A RUNNING STITCH, AND THEN WE'VE ADDED BUTTONS JUST TO EMPHASIZE THE REDS.
- RIGHT.
WELL, WE'RE GOING TO TAKE A LOOK AROUND THE ROOM, AND WE'RE GOING TO KIND OF CRITIQUE EACH ONE OF THESE AND GIVE THE HIGH POINT OF EACH OF THESE QUILTS.
WHAT ABOUT THE BEAR QUILT?
- THE BEAR QUILT WAS MADE BY KATHY SEVESON, AND SHE TOOK HER FAVORITE OLD TEDDY BEAR THAT'S OVER 20 YEARS OLD, AND SHE TOOK HIS PICTURE.
SHE DID USE THE OSNABERG SO THAT IT WOULD HAVE A NICE TEXTURE JUST LIKE HER TEDDY BEAR.
- THE YELLOW AND BLUE QUILT IS FEATURING STARS.
ANYTHING SPECIAL ABOUT THAT QUILT?
- THIS STAR QUILT WAS MADE BY DIANE RUBEL.
YOU CAN SEE THAT SHE'S USED A LOT OF YELLOW AND BLUE STARS, AND YET THE PHOTOS STILL SHOW UP VERY WELL.
SOME OF THEM SHE'S EVEN PUT ASKEW, BUT SHE'S REPEATED THAT MOTIF THROUGHOUT THE QUILT.
- NOW, ALL I SEE ARE HALLOWEEN PRINTS.
IS THERE SOMETHING MISSING IN THIS QUILT?
- WELL, THAT QUILT IS MADE BY LYNN AHLERS, AND LYNN TOOK PICTURES OF HER CHILDREN WHEN THEY HAD THEIR HALLOWEEN COSTUMES ON, AND THAT'S WHAT SHE'S PUTTING IN THE BORDER.
- ALL RIGHT, I LIKE THE PLAID FEATURED AROUND EACH OF THESE VERY MEMORABILIA QUILTS.
WHO DID THAT QUILT?
- ROBIN MALONEY DID THAT QUILT, AND SHE DID THAT WITH HER MOTHER AND HER BROTHERS AND SISTERS.
SHE FRAMED ALL OF THE PHOTOS WITH DIFFERENT FABRICS AND THEN IS PUTTING THAT SASHING ON AND IS DOING QUITE A LARGE QUILT.
THE NEXT QUILT IS MADE BY KATHY STALEY.
SHE USED HER CHILDREN'S ARTWORK IN THAT QUILT.
SHE ALSO CUT OUT SOME OF THE ARTWORK AND USED PURCHASED STATIONERY THAT HAS INTERESTING PATTERNS, SOMETIMES OFTEN FABRIC-LIKE, BEHIND THEM.
WE CUT OUT THE PHOTOGRAPHS, PUT THEM ON THE PAPER, AND TRANSFERRED THAT.
THE NEXT QUILT IS REALLY BASED ON BORDER PRINT, AND I LOVE THE WAY THAT TIES IT ALL TOGETHER IN AN ASYMMETRICAL MANNER.
KATHY ZIEGLER MADE THIS QUILT, AND THE PHOTOGRAPH IN THE CENTER IS OF HER GRANDPARENTS' WEDDING DAY.
THE NEXT QUILT OVER IS DONE BY CAROLYN WALLER.
CAROLYN MADE A QUILT FOR HER SON, WHO'S NOW 18 YEARS OLD.
HIS NAME IS FRANCIS, AND THAT'S HIS SISTER, ROSE, ALSO.
THESE ARE PHOTOGRAPHS THAT FEATURE HIM AS HE GREW UP.
KAY STOTESBERRY DID THIS QUILT, AND SHE USED SOME FAVORITE STATIONERY THAT SHE HAD ACTUALLY HAD FOR MANY YEARS AND NOT KNOWN WHAT TO DO WITH.

HE'S AN INDIAN ARTIST, AND HE HAS DONE CUSTER IN THE MIDDLE.
IT'S BEEN REDUCED AND PUT ON FABRIC, AND THEN THE INDIANS SURROUNDING HIM.
I THINK SHE'S DONE A BEAUTIFUL JOB OF CONNECTING THE PHOTOS WITH THE GOLD SQUARES.

SO WHAT ELSE IS NEW IN PATCHWORK?
IT'S GOT TO BE THE EMBROIDERY MACHINES OF TODAY.
WHY, THEY CAN JUST ATTACH TO YOUR SEWING MACHINE AND THEN JUST STITCH AWAY.
OUR MANTLE HAS THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT.
IT'S A MANTLE SCARF.
NOW WOULDN'T IT BE FUN TO MAKE CHANGING SCARVES FOR EACH SEASON?
WELL, THAT'S JUST WHAT I DID.
I'VE ATTACHED ALL THESE DESIGNS TO SOME PAISLEY THAT JUST RESTS RIGHT UP ON THE TOP OF THE MANTLE.
BUT THE KEY ARE THE CARDS THAT I INSERT IN MY EMBROIDERY MACHINE.
I HAVE THE ALPHABET CARD IN TODAY.
FOR ALL THE DESIGNS, I USED THE CHRISTMAS CARD.
WE'RE GOING TO START WITH AN M TO SHOW YOU HOW THIS WORKS.
I HAVE RED THREAD ON TOP AND A RED THREAD IN THE BOBBIN.
NOW MY MACHINE IS ALL SET UP.
I HAVE THE WHITE MATERIAL WITH A TEAR-AWAY STABILIZER UNDERNEATH, AND THOSE ARE BOTH PLACED IN THE HOOP.
NOW WE'RE GOING TO START THE MACHINE, AND WHILE IT'S MAKING AN M, I'M GOING TO GO SHOW YOU HOW TO DO MY CHRISTMAS WREATH.
IT'S TRIANGLES THAT FLOAT IN A CIRCLE, PLUS I HAVE A NEW FINISHING TECHNIQUE.
WHEN I START, I PULL UP MY MENU BY JUST TOUCHING THE SCREEN, AND THAT REVEALS FIVE DIFFERENT SCRIPTS.
NOW I'VE CHOSEN NUMBER 5, AND ONCE MY ALPHABET COMES UP, YOU'LL NOTICE THAT MY LITTLE HOURGLASS HERE IS LOADING.
IT'S BUSY DOING ITS THINGS IN THERE.
AND ONCE IT STOPS, THAT TELLS ME THAT I CAN PUSH NUMBER M. I'M HAPPY WITH THAT, SO I GO TO OK. ONCE THAT COMES UP, THE HOURGLASS IS WORKING AGAIN, AND MY LARGE LETTER IS REVEALED ON THE SCREEN.
AND IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY, MY MACHINE IS POSITIONING ITSELF, AND THERE'S A LITTLE CROSS THAT TELLS ME THAT'S EXACTLY WHERE MY LETTER'S GOING TO START.
SO I LOWER MY PRESSER FOOT, AND AFTER I PUSH THIS START BUTTON, IT'S GOING TO STOP, WHICH ALLOWS ME TO CUT A THREAD, AND THEN I'LL RESTART IT AGAIN.
SO LET'S WATCH THIS M IN PROGRESS AS I GO TO THE DESIGN BOARD.
[MACHINE WHIRS TO LIFE] [MUSIC] ♪ NOW FOR THAT CHRISTMAS WREATH FULL OF TRIANGLES.
INTO EVERY QUILTER'S LIFE, DRAFTING MUST COME AT SOME POINT.
AND IT'S SO EASY TODAY WITH THE TOOLS THAT WE HAVE AVAILABLE, AND I LIKE USING SOME OF THE BOOKS THAT ARE AVAILABLE TOO, ESPECIALLY THESE COPY-FREE DESIGN BOOKS.
LOOK AT THIS ONE, JUST FULL OF CIRCLE DESIGNS.
WELL, I STUDIED IT FOR A LONG TIME AND CHOSE THIS DESIGN TO DUPLICATE IN PATCHWORK.
LET ME GIVE YOU THE STEPS AND SEE IF YOU CAN DO IT AT HOME.
I'VE STARTED WITH A 22-INCH SQUARE OF PAPER.
YOU COULD CHOOSE ANY SIZE YOU WANT.
IN THIS CASE, I'VE GONE TO THE YARDSTICK BEAM COMPASS THAT ALLOWS ME TO DRAW A CENTER CIRCLE WITH A RADIUS OF 5 INCHES.
I WOULD THEN PUT MY YARDSTICK BEAM COMPASS ON THE LARGER YARDSTICK AND THEN DRAW A CIRCLE ALL THE WAY OUT TO THE EDGE.
ONCE THAT IS DONE, I REALIZE THAT ALL I NEED TO DO IS DIVIDE THIS INTO QUARTER SECTIONS BECAUSE EACH QUARTER SECTION IS REPEATED THE FOUR TIMES.
ONCE I'VE DONE THAT, I REALIZE THAT IT'S A SIX DIVISION.
WELL, 6 INTO 90 IS GOING TO BE 15 DEGREES, WHICH MEANS I THEN GO TO MY PROTRACTOR, AND POSITIONING THAT RIGHT IN THE CENTER, I'M GOING TO BE PUTTING A LITTLE DOT ON MY PAPER EVERY 15 DEGREES.
THAT ALLOWS ME TO TAKE THE LONG RULER, AND FROM THE CENTER TO THAT DOT, I SIMPLY DRAW THAT DIVISION.
MY NEXT MEASUREMENT WAS GOING TO BE FOR THE TRIANGLE THAT IS REPEATED IN EACH OF THOSE QUARTER SECTIONS.
I CHOSE 8 1/2 INCHES FROM THE CENTER OUT TO THIS POINT.
SO EACH TIME, I JUST DRAW THAT TRIANGLE, KNOWING THAT THAT CIRCLE WAS WHERE--TOLD ME WHERE TO COME.
NOW, I'M GOING TO GIVE YOU A LITTLE TEST.
LOOKING OVER HERE AT THE WALL HANGING ITSELF, HOW MANY TEMPLATES DID I NEED?
WELL, WE KNOW WE STARTED WITH A 10-INCH CIRCLE TO BEGIN WITH.
OF COURSE, DON'T FORGET TO ADD YOUR SEAM ALLOWANCE.
THEN I HAVE THE LARGE TRIANGLE, WHICH IS REPEATED EACH TIME.
6 TIMES 4, I'M GOING TO NEED 24 DIFFERENT CHRISTMAS PRINTS.
AND THEN THAT LITTLE TRIANGLE IS THE SAME EACH TIME.
SO I HAVE ONE TEMPLATE, TWO TEMPLATES, BUT THEN EACH ONE OF THESE BACKGROUND TEMPLATES ARE DIFFERENT.
SO THAT'S 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, PLUS MY CIRCLE.
IT'S AS EASY AS THAT.
NOW, I FINISHED THIS BY DOING A NEAT TRICK AROUND THE OUTSIDE, AND I WANTED TO SHARE THAT WITH YOU.
AND I HAVE A LITTLE MOCK SAMPLE TO DO THAT WITH.
I SOMETIMES AM BOTHERED BY THE PILLOW INVERSION, WHERE YOU HAVE TO TAKE YOUR HANDS, AND I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU THIS WAY.
TURN UNDER THE QUARTER INCH ON EACH SIDE AND WHIP STITCH IT TOGETHER.
YOU CAN ALWAYS FIND THAT ON THE OUTSIDE OF A WALL HANGING.
AND FOR BABY QUILTS OR WALL HANGINGS, I HAVE A NEW TECHNIQUE, AND THAT IS THAT YOU TAKE YOUR DECORATIVE TOP AND PIN OR BASTE THE BATTING TO THE BACK OF IT.
THEN YOU PUT THE BACK OF YOUR WALL HANGING WITH THE RIGHT SIDE TO THAT, AND THIS TIME INCLUDE THAT TUBE THAT YOU'RE GOING TO PUT A LATTICE STRIP INSIDE.
INCLUDE THAT AS A FOLDED OBJECT INSIDE THOSE LAYERS.
NOW, I CUT THIS 4 1/2 INCHES WIDE, AND THEN I PRESSED THAT END AT EACH END, PRESSED THAT END.
SO I'VE SIMPLY POSITIONED THAT INSIDE, AND THEN TO KIND OF SPEED THIS UP, I HAVE MACHINE SEWN ALL THE WAY AROUND, AND LET'S PRETEND THAT I CONTINUE MACHINE SEWING.
NOW, I'M NOT GOING TO LEAVE AN OPENING TO TURN THIS INSIDE OUT.
I'M GOING TO MACHINE STITCH ALL THE WAY, AND I KEEP COMING ALL THE WAY, INCLUDING THAT TUBE INSIDE.
THEN I HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DRAW A STRAIGHT LINE RIGHT AT THE TOP, AND I'M GOING TO CUT THAT OPEN AND TURN THIS INSIDE OUT.
NOW I HAVE FINISHED INVERTING THIS, AND I'M READY TO HIDE THAT SLIT THAT I MADE.
WHAT'S REALLY NICE IS THAT SLIT IS GOING TO BE COVERED BY MY TUBE THAT'S GOING TO BE WHIP STITCHED IN PLACE.
SO WHAT THIS PROCESS REALLY ELIMINATES IS SEWING ON ALL FOUR SIDES BUT LEAVING ABOUT A 5-INCH OPENING THAT YOU'D HAVE TO WHIP STITCH IN PLACE.
YOU CAN VERY SELDOM DISGUISE THAT.
THIS TIME, IT'S HIDDEN UNDERNEATH RIGHT HERE.
SO I WOULD JUST TAKE A NEEDLE AND THREAD, WHIP STITCH THAT OPENING CLOSED SO YOU WOULDN'T HAVE ANY SLACK HAPPENING ON THE BACK SIDE, AND ONCE THAT HAS BEEN DONE, THEN YOU'RE READY TO PULL THAT ON TOP.
I FOUND THAT IT WORKS WELL TO-- I'M GOING TO PRETEND HERE WITH THIS LITTLE 1-INCH RULER, BUT LET'S PRETEND THAT'S OUR LATTICE WOOD STRIP.
THEN ONCE THAT'S IN POSITION, PIN THAT IN PLACE, AND THEN YOU CAN SECURE THAT TO THE BACK OF YOUR QUILT, NOT GOING THROUGH TO THE FRONT SIDE.
THIS WORKS VERY NICE, AND ESPECIALLY FOR WALL HANGINGS, WHEN YOU MATCH THAT TUBE WITH THE BACKING OF YOUR PARTICULAR WALL HANGING.
I WONDER IF THAT M IS COMPLETE NOW.
IT WAS GOING TO TAKE 4 MINUTES, AND THAT'S HOW LONG WE'VE BEEN HERE, SO LET'S CHECK IT OUT.
