Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) - [Narrator] Young children have many opportunities to learn mathematics skills, such as measurement, throughout their daily experiences.
They can learn to measure things using standard tools, such as a ruler, or use non-standard tools, such as blocks, quarters or songs to measure different things.
A stuffed toy may be six quarters tall or a car ride three songs long.
Using standard and non-standard measurement terms helps children build mathematical vocabulary and understandings for more advanced mathematical learning later.
Help your child use comparison words, such as bigger, smaller, heavier, lighter, to describe various measurements.
Make a game out of trying to figure out which things are heavier by asking your child to hold a rock in one hand, a cotton ball in the other.
Ask your child to guess how big something is and then measure it.
Have fun with measuring.
