- I tell them that you need to learn how the government operates and that that's what civics is and that politics is about the struggle to be in power to control the way the government operates.

When they get a taste that they can really make a difference and that they can influence others through a speech or through some political action or becoming involved, whether it be in protests, writing to their congressmen, or research and really helping others understand facts versus fiction through, you know, Socratic seminars or any type of debates that we allow in our classroom, the responsibility they feel and knowing and getting them to believe that they can really change the world.

I just felt the need and the calling to help them learn more about the government, the institution, how it operates, and what they can do.
