It's Melvin Mania.
And.
Today's guests.
Hello, and welcome to Melvin Mania.
Hello.
It's kind of Julian here.
Are you cold, Steve-O?
Yeah.
I'm freezing.
Maybe someone left a window open.
Fall just started, so maybe a gust of cold air made it into the studio.
don't think so.
The studio doesn't have any windows.
That's true.
Stella, do you got any ideas?
Stella, did you hear me?
think she's frozen.
Melvin.
What do you mean?
I mean, she's frozen.
It looks like she's stuck in an ice block.
Whoa!
Stella, can you hear us?
What do you think she said?
not totally sure.
Let me see if she'll say it again.
Stella, say the exact same thing you said.
But slower this time.
You want us to order you a pizza?
But you only want it to be sauce and cheese.
I don't know, Stella.
That sounds like a pretty weird pizza.
How are they going to even put it in the pizza box?
Oh, gotcha.
That makes sense.
did she say?
She just explained how they would put it in the pizza box, So how are they going to do Basically, they would grab the pizza box, put some sauce in it, and then sprinkle in a little bit of cheese.
the type of pizza that she As far as I can tell.
I can ask her again, though.
Stella, you just want sauce and cheese, right?
Oh, gotcha.
That makes sense.
She wants to add a pepperoni, so now will be a pizza box with some sauce dumped on it.
Sprinkle a little cheese on top and one single pepperoni.
Is that right, Stella?
It's an interesting order, but I respect it.
Anyway, where were we?
Oh, we were talking about how cold it is in here.
Do you think we should check the thermostat?
oh, that's a great idea.
It looks like it's, 27 degrees in here.
That's right.
Is that good or bad?
Melvin.
That's super cold and below freezing level.
No wonder Stella's Oh, well, now things are making a lot more sense.
What should we do?
think our heater might be broken.
Maybe you should go talk to the studio landlord.
Do I have to, the only one he listens to.
Melvin.
Okay, fine.
I'll go talk to him.
But you owe me.
I'll be right back.
Hey, Mr.
Landlord, it's Melvin.
It's pretty cold in the studio right now, and we think the heater might be broken.
That's news to me.
If you don't mind me asking what is the temperature set to It's 27 degrees in there.
You sure?
I mean, it's pretty cold in there.
And our band, Stella, the speaker, is just completely frozen, like a complete frozen block.
know it's cold but I always had the temperature to my favorite number.
And my favorite number is 27.
But it wasn't 27 degrees in the summer.
It just began when fall started.
27 is my favorite number in the fall.
My favorite number changes every season Melvin.
Wait, what?
in the summer.
My favorite number 68.
And then in the winter it's 81.
And then in the spring it's 73.
And in fall, it's 27, is correct Melvin.
You got it.
So how did the conversation with the landlord go?
Is he going to fix the heater?
not broken, Stevo.
Mr.
Laszlo just really likes the number 27.
But, like, specifically during this time of the year, What know how else to explain it.
Stevo.
Honestly, after that conversation, I just feel like I need to clear my head and get some fresh air.
So let's go ahead and segue to our first segment of the show.
Local town on the ground.
Low cold down on the ground.
for today's local turn the ground, we're visiting Derby, Kansas.
Derby was founded in 1869 and was originally called El Paso until it changed his name to Derby in 1956.
Oh.
Why did they change its name?
Let me check.
That looks like that.
Okay.
Carry the one.
Okay.
Looks good.
Oh, okay.
So apparently, starting in 1879, most people were calling the town Derby, but they didn't officially rename the town Derby until 1956.
So Derby was basically the town's nickname for nearly 80 Wow.
So, does it have a nickname now?
I don't think so.
But if they want to keep the tradition of changing their name every 80 years, they better start thinking of one.
Anyway, it's freezing in here, and I honestly think it might be warmer outside than here in the studio.
So let's head to Derby, Kansas.
Welcome to Derby, Kansas.
Let's head on in and talk with some people.
Here I am with marks that the mayor of Derby, Kansas.
Now, Mark, I don't want to start this.
I know of you off to confrontational, but I do want to talk about this picture that you sent me when we were talking about interviewing you.
Can I go in and show it to you?
Absolutely.
Now this picture, I mean, you look super handsome in it.
Let's go ahead and make that clear.
That picture is about 42 years old.
It looks great, though.
I want you to.
I want to make it clear.
You look great in the picture.
No.
Thank you.
But I will say you basically look identical to what you look like in the picture.
Well, for your glasses.
When did you start wearing glasses, Marc?
About ten years ago.
So my glasses and minus a whole lot of hair.
I don't even know it.
I didn't even know.
I didn't even notice that.
But other than that, I think it's the spitting image.
What is your favorite thing to do in Derby, Kansas?
I like to go to the Derby Public Library.
the end.
One down.
A lot to go.
Mark, since you are mayor of Derby, Kansas, I thought I would pitch you a few new laws that I would like for you to introduce to the people here.
Can I pitch a few of them to you?
Absolutely.
First one.
all the drinking fountains in Derby will now serve fruit punch.
I think you can get behind this one more.
Come on.
Well, I'm not sure about that because I think people do need to drink more water.
And I think water is a lot healthier for you than a sugary fruit punch.
Can I revise a little bit?
What if we put milk in the water fountains instead of.
Well, there's a lot of people that cannot drink milk as well, and I don't think the milk would last long.
is your favorite thing to do in Derby, Kansas?
Go to the dinosaur place Okay, so when I go to the dinosaur place, what dinosaur should I go see?
The T-Rex.
What a beautiful creature.
T-Rex.
I was under the assumption that all of these were extinct, but, there's one right here.
What?
This isn't real.
So the next law I have is at Every neighborhood in Derby must put on a musical number at the beginning of the year.
What do you think?
I think that's a fabulous idea.
it would get neighbors out to meet each other and a musical number would be fun.
And I think it would lower tensions in neighborhoods.
So I do think that's a good idea.
Okay, so we can make that a law.
No, it doesn't work quite like that.
Our city council, we have eight people in our city council, and they're the ones who would vote to make that a law.
how do you think our numbers are doing?
you think we would go?
Eight out of eight.
I don't think we'd get eight out of eight, but we might be able to get six out of eight.
And that would, make it a law.
we're going to make this happen so we can try on that one.
Okay.
Okay.
What is your favorite thing to do in Derby, Kansas?
I at Woodland Park with my friends.
Oh.
Woodland park.
Interesting.
Name is there any wood there?
No, Here I am at Woodland Park, and I have no idea what Cara was talking about.
There is so much wood here.
So, Mark, one of the first things I saw in your office was this map.
What is this, a map of?
That is a map of Derby, Kansas.
Oh, What is your favorite thing to do in Derby, Kansas?
I like to go get donuts with my friends.
I'm in derby.
I got my donut, and now I just got to wait for my friends.
They should be here any minute.
So another law that I have Mark is from now on, whenever you see someone in Derby, you must do the Derby secret handshake.
You may show it to you.
Absolutely.
so we start off with just a normal high five.
Then we turn into nooks.
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa.
And then we both put each other our hands on our shoulders like this.
And we say, Debbie, dooby dooby dooby dooby dooby And then we do one of these.
Whoa whoa whoa whoa.
And then we do another handshake.
We shake hands and we say, nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you.
And then we look over there, there's a camera.
We go, wait.
And we go, hey, what were you watching?
That whole thing.
we watched that whole thing.
Were you watching the whole thing?
And then we do, like, we put our hand on our face and we're like, oh, man, that was so embarrassing.
That was so embarrassing.
That was rough.
then we say, actually, actually, that was the Derby handshake that was the Derby, and now you know how to do it.
And then we do it.
Do it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And then we do like a little sideways knocks like this.
Perfect.
And then we ended up with just like a classic high five and that's it.
Pretty simple.
What is your favorite thing to do?
And.
Durbin, Kansas.
Go to, the, the, school park.
Okay, cash, this is a lot of fun, but, hoping that I might turn pretty soon.
okay, Mark, here's another law.
What if have you posted Marcus.
Cool.
On any social media?
We mail you a TV.
Well, I should be a fan of this one.
Mark, I would love to see Marcus cool on social media.
Oh, but I don't think I can afford to mail out that many TVs.
What is your favorite thing to do in Derby, Kansas?
Probably the minigolf at Dinosaur Park.
Here's Melvin and he's ready for the putt.
He's going to get in a hole in one.
Here we go.
So, Mark, I live in Wichita, which is pretty north of Derby, So Let's do a hypothetical.
And I'm going to be driving.
Okay.
Driving south from Wichita.
Okay.
And I want you to try to convince me to stop in Derby, okay?
All right.
I just landed at a stop sign.
Okay, here it is on the side of the road, and you start talking to me.
So you say like, hey, are you visiting Derby?
Hey, are you visiting Derby?
I don't know.
I'm already driving so south.
I'm thinking about maybe just driving to Brazil.
Well, I think that's a long drive.
I think you need to stop in Derby and probably have some lunch somewhere And, a great place to do a light is green, but I'm going to.
I'm going to go.
No, no no, no.
Keep talking.
Well, I'll keep talking because Derby's a great place to stop.
No, they're going past you.
But that's okay.
They're being safe right now.
You see us talking?
but there's a lot to do here on your way to Brazil.
Yeah, I would definitely recommend that you stop and enjoy it because you got a long drive ahead of you.
Yeah, I got I'm stuck.
I'm going to stop in Derby for a little bit.
Maybe.
I think I'll stop for an hour and then I'm heading south to Brazil.
Okay.
Now.
You can see a lot in Derby and have a lot of fun.
What is your favorite thing to do in Derby, Kansas.
Play sports.
Okay.
What's your favorite sport?
Football.
Okay.
Mark, I am wondering because I have been asking a few of the kids in Derby, what is your favorite thing to do in Derby, Kansas.
So my favorite thing to do is I like going to our, wonderful parks.
I really enjoy seeing families out enjoying the parks as well.
And when the weather's decent, the parks are full.
And that, as mayor warms my heart.
So a mark.
One of the first things I saw when I came into your office was this wall full of stuff.
What is this stuff?
Well, a lot of it is very personal to me.
At the very top is a wooden police flag.
It's got the thin blue line right down the middle.
I'm a retired police sergeant, and my son is currently a police officer.
This is my badge number here.
And that is his badge number there.
we've got a coin collection.
A lot of military coins, police coins and some fire coins.
And then, of course, a picture of my son who is on the police department.
Oh, that's so cool.
So I would say that this wall is very important.
Yes, it is.
It's very important to me.
And as I sit at my desk every day, this is what I look at.
What is your favorite thing to do in Derby, Kansas?
Rock River Rapids.
Rock River Rapids.
What is that?
Is that like a rock n roll thing?
No, it's a water park.
Rock River rapids.
Let me introduce you to rock n roll music So, Mark, I am curious because you are the mayor and you used to be a police officer.
Is there any way I could maybe ride in a police car?
Absolutely.
Would you like to take a ride in the police car right now?
I mean, I was going to say we could do it in, like, ten minutes, but if we can do it right now, we can probably do it within the next ten minutes.
Let me make a phone call and we'll have somebody meet you out front.
Okay, let's do it.
All right.
Let's do it.
Wow.
I cannot believe I'm in an actual police car.
This is so cool.
You got a laptop?
You got.
Got windows.
Got steering wheel.
It's just.
It's a real car anyway.
Me and Mark, we're talking about some new laws that we're thinking about.
And, what if we go out and just make sure people are following those laws?
What do you think?
Let's hit it.
Let's go.
What a great time in Derby, Kansas.
Thank you to mayor Mark stats and all the kids of Derby for taking the time to talk with us.
What did you think, Stevo?
It looked like a lot of fun.
And it also looked really warm.
Oh it was.
The builders were also had a good temperatures and outside it was like 55 degrees.
Do you think we could turn it up in here to 55 degrees?
I don't think that's asking for much.
would, Steve-O, but I think Mr.
Landlord got suspicious, so he had a brick installed over the thermostat, so we would have messed with it.
I'm afraid we're on our own.
I don't know how much longer I can stay near Melvin.
Do you have any ideas?
I have a few.
But first things first, I think we need to hear about Stella because even though you're freezing, Stevo, Stella is the one stuck in an ice block, so I think she's the top priority.
That makes sense.
We got to take care of Stella.
What do you have in mind?
if anyone's going to know the best way to melt ice safely, it would be learned that PBS Kansas Kosher Garvey Children's Education Discovery Center.
So let me go check with her, and then we can figure out how to thaw out Stella.
So then Mr.
Landlord told me that we have to keep the temperature at 27 degrees.
I don't agree with that.
But whatever that I went to Derby and, ended up there.
I talked to the mayor for a little bit, and now I am here then to talk to you about Stella, who is a solid ice block.
Oh my goodness.
No, dude, think you could help me with that?
I would love to help you with that because I love Stella.
And also I have the same problem.
Oh.
You do?
Yeah.
Oh, wait, I totally forgot.
We're in the same building you're dealing with, Mr.
Landlord, too?
I am, So look what happened to our dinosaur.
Oh that dinosaur.
I would consider that the Ice age.
That is right.
And you know, our friends at visit loved dinosaurs.
So we have got to figure out how to get this dino out of there.
Let's do it.
So we could try using, just some water.
But part of the things that we have to keep in mind is we want to do this quickly.
We've got to get this dino out.
You've got to get Stella.
Exactly.
let's just start here just to kind of see if this works.
Good.
So this is warm water.
Did you want to try?
No.
Of course.
Okay, sure.
See that?
Okay.
it's kind of working.
But it's not fast enough.
sometimes when you're on the ice, you like to kind of, you know, pretend that you're just going through the block and breaking open the block.
So we could try that.
Do you see that ice coming off?
Yeah.
It's working a little bit.
And it working, running, blazing.
I tried.
Yeah.
Let me see.
Yeah.
All right then here is my super duper spoon.
Ice smash.
Are you ready?
I am ready.
Here we go.
Watch your hands.
Okay.
I think I, I mean, it did a pretty good job, but I definitely could have been better.
I think we should try something else.
Okay.
How about that?
I'm pretty sure that this will work fast.
So when you use salt.
Okay, I guess, oh.
Interesting.
Salt.
I would have never thought of that what we're going to do is we are going to lower the freezing temperature.
So this liquid water turned into ice at 32 degrees.
Yes, I've heard of that before.
And that makes sense because the studio and I imagined the ETS in a right now it's 27 degrees.
It's that's way below five degrees below freezing level.
So we can sprinkle this on.
And it's really going to start working a lot faster.
you know it's still a lot to to thaw.
But you can kind of see on the top it's going to start the process.
Yeah.
It's going to start the process.
It looks pretty good.
And I tried this all out just give myself a little bit of practice.
Sure, sure.
Kind of reminds me of, you know, French fries and stuff.
Oh, I Okay.
And also, when Stella is in the ice, then she gets a little snack, too.
That's right, that's right.
It will wake her up.
That's for sure.
So what I'm going to do is I'm going to work on this, but I'm also going to get you geared up so you can take these tools back and you can get Stella out of there.
if you want.
You can try the other things.
But I think for Stella, you're going to want to get her out of there.
Okay, I'm going to grab this stuff.
I'm going to head to the to the studio, and we are going to get Stella out of that ice block.
Excellent.
You go for it.
Thanks, Lynn.
So, how are you feeling, Stella?
better.
But you know what?
We're really make me feel even better.
what My pizza.
Did you order it yet?
I did, and I got it exactly how you told me to get it.
Sauce, cheese and a single pepperoni.
That's exactly what I ordered.
And it should be here pretty soon anyway.
Now that we got you warmed up and your pizza's on its way, we need to try to figure out how to warm up Stevo.
Oh, good.
My toes are completely numb, so let's try to figure out something quick.
What are you thinking, Melvin?
What if we got you a sweater Sweater would be great, but I'm pretty small, so it's hard to get a sweater in my size.
well, you're in luck, Steve-O, because our guest today has a bunch of sweaters, and I bet he'll definitely have one in your size.
Oh, really?
Who's our guest?
is Lazarus Massie.
Lars is an entrepreneur and an expert at thrifting clothes.
In fact, he's so good at it that he started a business in 2020 called Dead Center Vintage and downtown Wichita where people can purchase clothes.
He thrifts.
Please help me in welcoming Lars to the show.
I don't think the TV is working.
Maybe it needs warmed up.
Good thinking.
Steve-O.
Just give me a second.
There you go, buddy.
Let's just get you warmed up.
There we go.
Welcome to the show, lads.
Melvin.
Thanks for having So, like, we're in a bit of a pickle right now because our studio is super cold, and Stevo needs a sweater to warm him up.
Do you have any sweaters?
yeah.
For sure.
Oh that's awesome.
Well, good news, Stevo.
Looks like lads are going be able to get you a sweater.
Oh, good.
That's great news.
is that all you Yeah, we just needed a good Stevo sweater, and now we're all set.
about you, Melvin?
What do you mean?
Do you need a sweater jacket?
I don't want you to get No.
I'm good.
As you could tell, I'm covered in fur, so I keep warm pretty easily.
well, you don't have to get something to keep you warm.
I mean, we could just get you an outfit to rock for fall.
Hold up.
You really think I could rock a fall fit?
Definitely.
Plus, fall fashion is in full swing, so it'd be a great time to pick a fit out for you.
I just don't know if I could pull anything off.
What do you think would look good on me?
A fall fit for Melvin.
That's a great question.
I'm thinking for the top, a jean jacket, and then maybe you layer with, like, a flannel for the pants.
I don't know, sweats.
And then the shoes.
I mean, you could wear sandals, Melvin.
sound like a pretty good fit.
But should I be worried that all the clothes are used and thrifted?
Definitely not.
Melvin, all the clothes in your outfit are used and older, but that just means I stood the test of time.
Plus, buying used clothes is good for the environment because you're reusing clothes.
Oh, wow.
I didn't even think about that.
Now I definitely want to come grab a thrifted outfit.
Can I come grab my outfit and Steve a sweater right now?
Of course.
Swing by the shop and I'll get you that full offset.
And that sweater for Stevo.
Oh, head your way now.
Okay, so there is a lot to choose from in here.
So I think it would be smart if we split up.
What do you think?
Okay, okay.
How do you want to do it then.
Why don't I go look for or sweater and you go forget my fit.
So good.
Yeah.
Sounds great.
Let's do it.
Okay.
Let's do it.
Wow.
That, montage was a lot shorter than I thought it was going to be.
I guess it just helps when you know exactly what you're looking for.
Anyway, how do I look?
You look fresh, Melvin.
You look absolutely fantastic.
I feel fresh.
I feel good, and I'm, super excited about wearing this outfit.
And I'm also excited about Steve.
A sweater, which you could see.
Yeah.
How do you think that?
Look, Steve is going to look super good in this.
He's really excited and he's going to be warm.
That's the most important part.
Yes.
So I'm going to take this back to the studio, give it back to Steve-O.
And, thank you so much for helping me pick up my feet.
And, yeah, look at Steve go up with the sweater any time.
We'll see you next time.
So, what do you think of your sweater, Steve?
Oh, are you way warmer?
Definitely.
It's still cold in here, but the sweater is making it way better.
Oh, good.
Dude, Stella's pizza deliver while I was gone.
It was scheduled to be here soon, so I wanted to make sure it was here.
did.
But there's a problem.
Okay.
What's going on?
Look at Stella.
Oh, no.
have to talk to the landlord again.
Melvin.
Stella is going to be an ice block if we don't get the temperature warmer in here.
No, no, no, we can fix this.
What have we just like, I want to be able to eat my sauce.
Cheese and single pepperoni pizza.
Don't talk to the landlord for us.
Talk to him for the sake of the cheese sauce and single pepperoni pizza.
Wow, Stella, that was an incredibly inspirational speech.
I'm going to do it, guys.
I'm going to get this studio up to a reasonable temperature.
I can't do it alone, though.
Do you want us to come with you No, I'm bringing my lawyer.
Pokey.
Pokey is a drawing that was sent to him by one of our viewers to put in our creative box.
And if you're interested in having your drawing feature on the show, you can email us at Melvin at kpd.org.
Pokey was sent in by Esther from Augusta.
Let's put pokey in the crate a box to see if they can help us.
Talk to Mr.
Landlord.
Welcome to the show, pokey.
We desperately need your help.
do you need help with?
Also, is anybody else cool near.
Well, pokey, that's actually why you're here.
You see, our landlord, Mr.
Landlord set the temperature in our studio to 27 degrees.
So it's super cold in here.
And because you're a lawyer, I thought you could help.
What do you I was hoping you could come talk to Mr.
Landlord with me.
And you could help me ask him to maybe bring the temperature up 2 or 3 degrees.
degrees Melbourne.
We need the temperature way higher than I agree with Steve on this one.
I mean, I was red when I first got here.
Now I'm blue.
You definitely need more heat than just two degrees.
Fine.
I'll request a higher temperature.
Would you be willing to go with me, pokey?
I don't know what's in it for me.
well, if we get the temperature down, we'll be able to eat pizza.
What kind of pizza?
sauce.
Cheese and a single pepperoni pizza.
Okay, I'll do it.
serious?
Let's go talk to Mr.
Landlord.
Hey, Mr.
Landlord, it's Melvin.
I'm here to talk to you about, temperature again.
Did the brick fall down?
I can send someone to fix that.
Right now I just use duct tape, so it's a really easy fix.
No, it's about the temperature, not about the brick.
We just want it to be way warmer in the studio.
No.
Can't do.
I'm a numbers man.
And when I see a number on my hand, I stick to Are you sure?
I've never been more sure of anything in my life.
Mr.
Landlord, you left me with no choice.
I got to get my lawyer.
Come on in.
Okay.
Oh, he's already in the room.
Hey, pokey.
Poke it is Mr.
Landlord.
Mr.
landlord.
This is pokey.
Hold up.
Okay.
You guys.
You guys know each other?
yeah.
Me and Mr.
Landlord go way back.
Don't we?
talking Oh, yeah.
Ever since that thing that happened.
What is the thing that happened?
thing that happened.
Well, you never stop talking about that thing that happened.
So that checks out.
may have forgotten.
I was in the room.
enough about the thing that happened.
Let's get Oh, good.
Finally.
you got, pokey?
I have a sauce, cheese and single pepperoni pizza.
My name written all over it.
actually, it's Stella's pizza.
Okay.
we can't strike a deal, then I'm going to be very, very upset.
So let's talk.
So what happened next It was incredible.
Steve-O.
You should have seen it.
Pokey was all like, you gotta bring the temperature up.
Stella is frozen solid, Mr.
