America’s first black variety show is being celebrated in a PBS documentary airing here on Detroit Public Television on February 22nd at 10:00 p.m. The show was called “Soul,” and it debuted on public television in 1968. The host and producer, Ellis Haizlip, created the groundbreaking show as a way to celebrate African American contributions to the arts. The documentary is titled, “Mr. Soul.”
