Did you know that I play the drums in the school band?
And, tonight, we're having a big concert.
Learning to play a musical instrument can be difficult, so that's why I practice every day.
You know what they say: "Practice makes perfect."
(fast drumming) The drums keep the beat of the music, so it's really important for me to stay in rhythm because my other bandmates are counting on me.
Sometimes, I play a slow song where the beat goes like this: (slow drumming) And, other times, I play a faster song!
(faster drumming) And, sometimes, I play a really fast song.
Check this out.
It's my favorite.
(rapid drumming) (bell rings) Oh, there's Barry the Bell.
It's time to go to class.
I wonder what we're learning about today.

I was just conducting the music orchestra.
They still need some practice, but they're doing much better.
Music is a type of entertainment that puts different sounds together in a pleasing and interesting way.
Most music includes people singing with their voices: ♪ La la la ♪ Or, playing musical instruments: (imitates trombone) Like, this band right here!
(band plays "When the Saints Go Marching In") Someone who makes music is called a musician.
Music is organized by using rhythm, (drums playing) melody, (trumpet plays "When the Saints Go Marching In") or harmony, (band plays louder) and today's story is all about music.
It's called "Backyard Band", and it's written by Suzanne Barchers and illustrated by Hannah Neale.
(reading) "Come in and take a seat.
"This band just can't be beat.
"Each player has practiced a part.
"Each player is ready to start.
(flute playing) "Butterflies play the flute.
♪ "They flutter with every toot.
♪ "Miss Ladybug plays piccolo.
(piccolo playing high) "This lady just loves the show.
"The dragonfly plays oboe.
(oboe playing) ♪ "She plays it high and low.
♪ "Praying mantis plays bassoon.
(bassoon playing low) "He rarely plays in tune.
"Two beetles play clarinets.
(clarinets playing) "They love to play duets.
"The weevil plays saxophone.
(jazzy saxophone playing) ♪ "He has...a jazzy tone!
♪ "The tuba's played by the slugs (tubas playing) "with some help from the bedbugs.
(page rustles) (trumpet plays high) "The trumpet is played by the snail.
♪ "He really makes it wail!
♪ "Mosquitoes play trombones.
(trombones playing) "They sound a bit like drones.
(bells playing) "Two pillbugs play the bells.
"They strike them with their shells.
(page rustles) (kazoo playing) "Each hummingbird plays kazoo.
♪ "They know just what to do.
♪ "The timpani are played by worms.
"Across the top, each squirms.
(soft drumming) (page rustles) (xylophone tinkling) "The lightning bugs play xylophone.
"They will not be outshone.
(chimes ringing) "The weevils ring the chimes.
"They come in late sometimes.
(page rustles) (slow drumming) "The caterpillar beats the drums.
"He plays them with his chums.
"A solo is sung by the bee.
(bee buzzing) ♪ "She sings a bit off-key!
♪ (page rustles) (cymbals crashing) "The cymbals are played by fleas.
"The clashing creates a small breeze.
(page rustles) "The spider conducts the band.
"He uses all his hands.
"When it's time to end the show, "the players all bow low.
"The audience knows the score.
(cheering/clapping) They stand and shout, "Encore!"
"Just listen!
They play it again, "Oh, When the Saints Go Marching In.'"
Hey, that's the same song that my band was practicing.
Should we try it again?
(chimes ringing) And a one, and a two, and a one, two, three.
(band plays "When the Saints Go Marching In") (bell ringing) Oh, that's the end of our class.

(playful horn honking) (bell rings) (Barry raps) ♪ Get out of the classroom ♪ ♪ and go into the hall ♪ ♪ That's where you'll see Eddie ♪ ♪ against the locker wall ♪ - Word up!
(bell rings) (playful horn honking) - [Eddie] When people ask me what kind of music I like, I never know how to answer, because I like listening to all kinds of different music.
And, I love discovering different types of songs from all around the world and from different decades.
So, check this out.
This is the kind of music my dad likes, cumbia.
(lively guitar/accordion music) ♪ My mom likes jazz.
(loud saxophone/lively drums) ♪ And my brother, he likes hip-hop.
(soft percussive beats) ♪ And my next door neighbors, well, they love country.
(twangy acoustic guitar) ♪ My teacher likes classical music.
(elegant piano music) ♪ Now, my best friend, he likes rock and roll.
(loud electric guitars/drums) ♪ And, me?
Well...
I like it all!
(bell ringing) Oh!
I heard that!
Even Barry's bell sounds like a cool song to me!

We're ready for the concert tonight!
We learned so much about music today.
First, we read a story where everyone played a different musical instrument.
"Come in and take a seat.
"This band just can't be beat.
"Each player has practiced a part.
Each player is ready to start."
Then, Eddie discovered all different types of music on his phone.
- [Eddie] This is the kind of music my dad likes, cumbia.
(lively guitar/accordion music) ♪ - Meanwhile, Barry realized that he likes to rap!

Music is amazing.
There are different types or genres of music from all around the world and even from different times.
When you hear music, try to listen with open ears and find different styles that you enjoy.
And if you ever have the opportunity to play a musical instrument, give it a try.
We can all be musicians, especially you.

My drum and I are in the rhythm section, because we keep the beat.
(rapid drumming) I like being a musician.
I enjoy playing all different kinds of music.
Some songs are slow, some songs are fast, but all that music makes me feel happy.
(Eddie plays drums) (horn honking) - Now, let's go in español!

Oye, esa es la misma canción que nuestra banda estaba practicando.

♪ (sonido de campana) (bocina jugetona) - [Eddie] Cuando la gente me pregunta qué tipo de música me gusta, nunca sé cómo responder, porque a mí me gusta todo tipo de música.
Y me encanta descubrir diferentes estilos de canciones, de todas partes del mundo, y- de diferentes décadas.
Mira, este es el tipo de música que a mi papá le gusta: cumbia.

Aprendimos mucho sobre la música hoy.

(tocando tambores) (bocina jugetona) - [Narrator] Musical instruments come in all shapes and sizes, and they make so many different types of sounds that when put together create beautiful music.

Let's take a listen and try to match the sound we hear to the musical instrument that it comes from.
See if you can identify which instrument, instrumento, makes this sound.
(wind instrument plays) The saxophone!
El saxofón!
The saxophone es un instrumento bien lindo and it belongs to the woodwind family even though it's mostly made out of metal.
When you blow into it, it creates smooth and jazzy sounds that can be mellow and blue, triste, or bright and cheerful, feliz!
♪ Okay, here's another.
(instrument rattling) Sí, the maracas!
♪ Maracas are super fun and colorful.
You hold them in your hands and shake them to make music.
When you shake them, they make a happy and rattling sound that can be soft or loud, depending on how fast or how hard you shake them.
They are used to add a bouncy rhythm to the music and can be found in lots of music from Latin America.
And, what instrument makes these angelic sounds?
(string instrument plays softly) The harp!
¡La arpa!
The harp is a large and majestic instrument that stands on the floor and has lots of strings stretched across its beautiful frame.
When you pluck its strings, it makes soft twinkling sounds that can feel like magic floating in the air.
It's often heard in dreamy music and lovely lullabies because it sounds so peaceful and soothing.
Bien tranquilo.
