Once we pull the rope, that pesky rotting log will pop out and we'’ll be able to finally build our castle!

Well, since we can'’t move the rotted log, maybe we can build our castle around it!

And now that log is on its way to becoming dirt, and not just any old dirt... soil the forest needs to stay healthy.
Rotting logs play such an important role in the life and health of a forest.
Please don'’t take our log away.

I'’ve been wondering the same exact thing, Nature Cat!
But after digging through the Earth, wouldn'’t we just fall out of our hole into space, and then just be floating around forever?
I don'’t think we can fall off Earth.
You know... '’cause of gravity.
I heard from my best friend Charlie the dog, who heard from his best friend'’s sister'’s best friend'’s cousin'’s best friend'’s brother, who just so happens to be my best friend Charlie the dog, that if we dig all the way through the Earth we'’ll end up in China!

Um... Hal, I'’m pretty sure "digging to China" is just an expression.

We dig here, and we see where we come out!

Um, not quite, Hal.
We have about another... um... well... 8,000 miles to get to the other side.

How are we going to do that, Nature Cat?

We need some help.
ANNOUNCER: So you say you'’re going to dig through the centre of Earth to the other side?
Well, there are a few important things you need to know.
To begin with, inside Earth you have to dig through three layers.
The top layer is called the crust.
It'’s the thinnest of the three layers.
Think of the crust like the skin of an apple.
That'’s how thin it is compared with the other two layers.
How about that?
And you should know that the deeper you dig, the hotter it gets.
The next layer is called the mantle.
Earth'’s mantle is much thicker than the crust.
It gets so hot there that the rocks melt.
Whoa, now that'’s some hot stuff!
The third and final layer of Earth is its core.
The core is huge, bigger than the moon, and the hottest of the three layers.
We'’re talking really, really, really hot!
If you succeed, you will be the first ever to make it through the centre of the Earth!
So good luck, and happy digging!
SQUEEKS: Whoa!
That'’s a lot of digging and a lot of heat to deal with!
Hmm... We need a better way to dig through Earth.
