Okay.
- Numbers come in two forms.
On one hand you have numerals.
On the other hand, you have words understanding the spelled out form of hundreds, thousands, and 10 thousands can help children when they're reading about topics with large numbers, start with a category full of large numbers.
Let's say the 10 tallest buildings in the world.
Take the height of each building and have it written in either word or number form.
Ask the child to make the conversion for each.
- So another two?
Mhm, 2000 and 2 in the hundredth place.
- Creating a cheat sheet to remind them of how many zeros are in each number will make it easier for them to make the conversions themselves.
And why stop at buildings?
I mean, this exercise can be done with any set of numbers that interest your child.
Thank you for all your great work.
I know that many zeros can be a lot - Sponsored by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, helping build literary skills and encouraging parents and children to spend 20 minutes a day reading together.
