Superstorm Sandy ripped through lower Manhattan in 2012, flooding the construction site of the Whitney Museum's new location right on the river. After that disastrous event, they designed a fortress-like flood protection system for when climate disaster strikes again, making it one of the most flood-resilient structures in New York.
