I'm Doug Brown with Chuck Patton, who for 18 years was the coach at the University of Northern Iowa.
And I'll tell you what, it's my opinion that tonight we're going to have one more of those very close meat on paper.
I don't think there's really a Clear-Cut winner.
We're going to have those matches that are just going to be toss ups.
And then we're going to have those matches where each team as an athlete, that's just superior than his opponent.
Well, let's talk about those lopsided ones maybe for a moment, because those mean so much these days with the scoring system, the way it is.
Well, yes, that's true.
Today you can get four or five or six points by beating your opponent by a superior margin.
So with those toss ups capable or going either way, I just think that tonight the guys that can beat their man by a superior decision are going to have to do it.
And I'll tell you, these are two teams that are hurting in some ways about as much as any two major teams.
Iowa State, for instance, has John Thorn, who won't be there tonight because of illness.
They've lost Mike Venter's dale for a while.
Stuart Carter's just getting back into shape Oklahoma's the same way.
Well, yes, they are.
They they've had some people that are really hurt, especially Johnny Johnson, who is an all-American form and is one of the best guys in the country.
And when you lose people like that, it really does make a big difference.
Johnny Johnson, by the way, maybe through for good.
We don't know.
He has a neck injury and those are really quite serious.
Well, this Oklahoma team, as you probably know, is coached by Stan Abel, who is now the winningest sooner coach in history.
Well, that does say a lot for him.
When you take the sooner program and the kind of history and tradition they've got and this man can really recruit, he puts a lot of good athletes out on the mat for those Oklahoma people.
He proved that last year because he came up with a young man that wrestles tonight at £126.
And some people think he was the best recruit in all the high schools last year.
Well, I'd have to say that he is one of the very best.
Now, Jamal Curry is one of those young men that was a three time state champion.
He was a national junior college junior champion at both Freestyle and Greco and was a 99 and zero record.
And he joins a team that has two all-American candidates up in the upper weights, where Iowa State is going to have to have some points by the time they get there.
Yes, Melvin Douglas is ranked second but he has beaten Booker Benford from Southern Illinois, Edwardsville, and has a loss to him.
So that could go either way.
And then Dan Shade is an all-American at both weight.
177 and 190.
And his only loss is to the young man over here, Goldman from Iowa.
And for Iowa State.
Tonight, we're going to see for the first time in our college wrestling series, one of the stars of last year's team.
This is you on Bill Kelly.
Well, Bill Kelly is really a superstar.
He was a two time state champion and Illinois very difficult to do.
He also was a national junior Greco champion.
So when you take those guys, put them together, Mercury and Kelly, you're going to see some.
Fireworks he's aiming for 118 yet this year and he'll wrestle Mercury tonight.
That's one of those great ones.
And tonight, you'll see two of the newcomers in this Iowa State team in the middleweight.
Well, Larry Jackson is a homegrown product here from Iowa who has a national junior college championship, to his credit, and I think has come on very strong of late.
He just had a win last week over Heffernan from Iowa.
And that makes a big difference when you beat the number one ranked guy.
And then Solomon Carr is a big throw man.
He likes to take guys down to their back.
And that's what he's going to have tonight.
And we'll see also off the mat at intermission in a special feature.
Iowa State University is heavyweight Darrell Peterson.
That'll be fine.
We'll look for that.
So it's Oklahoma against Iowa State.
We're back at Hilton Coliseum for college wrestling.
And it's Oklahoma, which has lost only once, and that was to Iowa versus Iowa State.
15 and four.
It's a close series, as we told you.
Well, that series has widened it just since 1982 when Oklahoma has won the last three of those competitions.
Oklahoma and Iowa State.
Let's take a look at the starting lineups now.
Here they are in the first five weights tonight.
118 through one 50.
We think that one 26, Mele Kyari and Kelly will be a dandy but actually the one at one 18 is going to be close we think.
This the meat is going to be decided here early we think just on momentum.
And that one 50 will be a dandy Higgins against Jackson for Oklahoma and Iowa State in the upper weights.
Well you'll see a couple of places where the Sooners are favored probably at one 67, one 77 and one 90.
And I think you see a place where Iowa State should be favored there at heavyweight.
One 58 could be a swing against two rather evenly matched people.
So it looks like a good lineup of matches tonight.
The referee for tonight is Dan Hill, who is the wrestling coach at Harlan, Iowa, and he's out talking to the captains of these two teams now it's Dan Shade and Melvyn Douglas for the Sooners and Joe Gibbs for the Cyclones and the where they go, what they're doing when they toss that kind of to decide who gets the choice.
Beginning the second period of the first match, third, fifth, seventh night matches.
And Chuck, there are the Big Eight Scars and the Big Eight tournament last year.
And you can see that Iowa State finished ahead of the Sooners in the Big Eight, but behind them in the Nationals that often happens.
Yes, there's a lot of swings after the Big Eight tournament.
One of the nationals.
£118.
This is one of those close ones, we figure between Melvin Gorrie of Oklahoma who has wrestled some at one 26, and Dan Higgins, a freshman from Iowa State, who already has a problem.
Well, I think that it's just no guesswork to anybody that Gary would love to be the 118 pounder, but he just can't beat out Mt.
Curry.
So he's at one 26.
Well, there are a lot of people who would like to avoid 126 where Barry Davis is.
Here's Gary in in the front trying to spin around and he has to take down the first one of them a two to nothing Oklahoma.
Just got a little bit extended.
Hagans from Iowa State got into the legs, but he got a little extended and Gary just took advantage of that and now he's a good hip tilt or you can see him trying to lock up the waist, tie up an arm.
And then the way that works is they've got to load the hips up on their knee.
They try to get their knee underneath the man and then load the hips on the knee, then roll him over.
But Higgins has managed to avoid it here.
As we've told you before, Higgins is really smaller than most.
118 pounders.
He can make the weight quite easily.
Yes, it's really not to your advantage to be that light and the 118 pounder in college, because most of these boys are coming down from somewhere around 132.
This weight class.
Higgins wrestled a good match his last time out, which was against Ohio State.
He got cyclones off to a winning start.
He's given up an arm to get tied up, and Gary is very dominant here so far and he hasn't been successful in getting the back expose.
So I would imagine that if he doesn't get him turned over here shortly, he's going to probably cut him loose, go back on their feet.
So a warning against Higgins, by the way.
Check for inactivity on the bottom.
That's Dan Hill's first move.
And he's telling him again that something different is going to have to happen.
There is a stalemate and they just go first minute and a half of this.
£118 match.
Harold Nichols would like to see Dan Higgins come up with something against Gary because these close prospects abound in this matter.
There are four or five places where either man could win.
These are these are one of those toss up matches that we talked about.
It could go either way.
It doesn't look like it could go either way right now because it's been dominated by Gore so far.
I don't know what happened to him right there.
He is complaining about a knee he may have, well, maybe a wrist to he limped off the mat and now he's talking about it's a thumb and so the Iowa State trainer has gone over to look at him and we'll see what's happening.
He made it.
He made a jam that when he knocked him down to the mat, the elbow of Higgins might have come down on top of his hand in the thumb, might have been in the way and just jammed.
Our state down.
Young man, Dan Higgins, he's only a freshman and not a redshirt freshman at that.
He has undoubtedly a deal of maturing ahead of him before his college career is very much.
All right, let's just go.
I did cut him loose.
This is a suspicion that if he wasn't getting success in that position, you might cut him loose from wrestling on his feet.
He's off a cliff.
And Corey is really being aggressive here.
He's keeping his hands and in Higgins face and pushing him the whole way.
Well, Higgins got into the legs both times, but he kind of stopped this motion.
And that's important to keep going once you get in there.
Two to one.
We have a minute.
19 seconds left to go.
Gary got a takedown on a counter move, and he let Higgins go.
So here's Higgins in again, but he's out of position even though he hasn't lost anything.
It's just very difficult to affect effective on offense from that position.
Some carries or Kelly's is what they call him from there because he has the arm locked up.
Once he gets the arm out now he starts to lose the possession.
They could lose a takedown right here.
But any go down, it's four to one.
Was pretty much dominating him with with power right now.
Doug Rae being pretty physical to him.
No.
Four to one.
Harold Nichols is going to come out and talk to the official.
I think there's something that Gary is doing that he doesn't like and we'll listen in.
I think that he's.
Able to.
Think he feels that maybe a little bit unnecessarily rough on the edge.
Well, actually, when he post I don't think we've.
Got a team now.
I think let's go.
I think what do you think that was about him?
He just said he doesn't need to push him that hard.
He doesn't need to be that unnecessarily.
Rough on the edge of the mat just because he's near the edge.
That was actually between the two coaches.
Well, there's a little bit of work going on.
The official right now, too, they're they're trying to make sure he understands what they want back in that position again, that they're trying to slide on in behind his opponent.
But they're going to go off the edge.
And again, Glory did let Higgins go in, figuring that he has the better of it on his feet.
He'd prefer a three to 41.
It's four to two now in favor of Melvin Gorey, a sophomore from Tulsa, Oklahoma, a game high school in Tulsa.
It doesn't look like he's generated any offense because the man from Ohio State's been doing all the shooting, but really he's putting the pressure on the man from Iowa State has to drop down in order to keep from getting pushed out of there.
And then he's been overextended and Gary has scored twice on counters.
Once you get the pressure on him, you want to keep the pressure.
Up next, we're in the last few seconds of the first period.
It's 3 minutes long, as you know, and then the next two periods are two apiece.
Now, we'll come back to the center for the second period.
We'll see who won the coin toss.
They're staying able to coach of the Sooners at Oklahoma State, Oklahoma.
Had they had the choice, Gary chooses down.
There's the Iowa State coaching staff Nichols on the left less Anderson on the right.
He's doing the charting.
Gary.
He's going to try to get up out of here in a hurry.
It's his forte is on his feet he doesn't affect himself very well when he's down on the mat.
So as he tried right there, Higgins got a real nice job of stopping it.
He's going to try to get up and get out of there.
Gary he's been a very active wrestler here.
He's been up.
He's been driving hard.
He and Mercury have traded places a few times this year, one 18 and one 26.
But I'm sure they'll want Valkyrie at one 18 before the season is over.
I'm sure of that.
You he did get to stand up and earlier they lifted he likes to throw.
That's one of the things Higgins is trying to take away from him is his ability to throw.
Oh, well, I'll tell you what this this is a chance for a toss up is turning into the one that were Oklahoma could score some points now.
Yes they got a big lead in and very clear dominance.
I just kind of released him there to let him slide out in front.
Makes it seven to three.
Gary has had three takedowns and has dominated Higgins from the he's going to stay on the feet position, but it hasn't been much on the field, especially down here on the knees.
No, it's just got him out of position there.
Again, he just did the same little just spin around behind him type of maneuver where he gets a man's head down and then starts to free the arm spins and behind.
It isn't as attractive as a throw or a fireman's carry.
Something like that, but it's.
Effective that's sure.
Yeah.
Larry just kind of released him on the edge and now they're back on their feet again.
Nine to four is the score.
It's Gary by five.
You got the other guy up the contact lens.
That was what the first stoppage of the match was for.
Higgins lost a contact lens on his right.
I lost it in the left.
He's ready as I indicated, he he likes to throw the young man from Oklahoma, wants to try to take Higgins up and make his upper body come up and then have a chance to throw him.
But Higgins is remaining in that position and backing out of there, so it's difficult for him.
Now, Gary has a minute and 41 seconds of riding tight to because he started in the down position.
Higgins had it chance to pick up some, but he only got 8 seconds.
For those on the ledge.
Now he's just got to take that for the goal.
Out of bounds.
The call is when rookie restless.
Feet go off and one man has to be, and when both men go off and he blows.
Them out.
Nine the four.
It's the first time that Higgins has been able to reach Gary in any kind of good position.
35 seconds to go.
Second career opening match.
Oklahoma and Iowa State.
Higgins again goes into the lane.
It's interesting to watch the momentum change right here.
Higgins is starting to get to glory now and in before he is making this the from is just kind of giving it up.
Nine it's nine to six and he lay down little knocking down he just went down stalling on the bottom is called it's a warning first time each man is not at war good.
So a situation here is 12 at the bottom and has to make.
Offensive attempts to get out Dan able not very happy now his man is ahead by three here in this opening match what do you think Higgins is going to do he has 8 seconds to go second period.
Well he'll write him now.
You better he's going to try to stay with him for these few.
Seconds.
He'll start up in the third period.
What do you think?
Glory's is going to be on top?
I think he's good.
I think he's going to try to take him to his back as one of his right.
But he didn't write it.
You just kind of cut him out of there without much time left.
Ten, six.
That's a surprise.
Ten to six now in favor of Gary.
Let's see that last checked down here again by Higgins.
He gets in, he gets in.
Nice to the leg.
And Gary just kind of turns.
Doesn't fight it very much.
Turns and goes the other way.
I just gave Higgins a point.
A point as Laurie got out once the man on the bottom gets down and gets set, the top man has to assume his position.
He can't move him around.
That was a penalty.
For this is far from over.
Far from over.
Higgins can get out and he can still keep the momentum oh.
So he is staying on top and effecting the right, but he's got to try to turn him over.
What he wants to do, I think, is hip told him.
See, him trying to get the knee underneath.
All right.
To try to tip the man's hips up on top and a load him up.
You have a minute?
35 to.
Go, Gary.
On top.
Dog.
Neither man's been very effective in the down position.
It's sort of because the other man's letting get away that they've had this happen.
A point is called for Higgins, and here comes Stanley.
But we never.
Lets that kind of thing go very long.
Yeah, he likes to talk to referees about this sort of thing.
And Dan Hill says, I'm not going to talk to you, Lieutenant.
It's one of those guys where he's going to be questioning judgment.
So the official saying, I don't have to talk to you about judgment.
And it makes it I'll take that rule interpretations.
It's ten, eight.
Out of Gary Higgins.
Got to his feet it's a part of what your job is on top if you don't want to get caught for stalling it's to win the Academy Award.
Go like this.
They're not going to get him over when the Academy Award is meant.
The director think you're trying to it's ten to a.
Favor of Gary and you.
Don't need to tell you how important it is for Higgins to get out.
And again, Dan Hill calls Gary for stalling.
And it's a point makes it ten 29 and Stan Able is just beside himself.
Oh say Coach we'll stand right there talking to Coach Nichols about this is the way it's going to go.
And it is very difficult in those kinds of situations to determine whether a man on the bottom is continuing to try to affect an escape or reversal.
You're allowed to stay with him as long as he's continuing to do that.
Ten, oh, nine Gary has the writing time and now Gary lets it go.
And it's ten, ten well, I would the party, the rock on the wall.
And here comes Gary with the takedown.
Well, he's.
Good in this position.
He feels comfortable right here, so he probably will try to do it again.
12, ten.
There's the score.
40 seconds to go.
Not everybody is watching the the match.
Cabbage Patch Dolls.
They're so this is what he wants to do is keep him away from the open shot.
Well, to the left.
Keep keep him away from the open shot.
Two points.
Four.
Gore is doing a fine job here in the last minute.
So he's got to.
Let him go again intentionally.
It's it doesn't want him in deep like this.
It's 14 to 12 but 10 seconds to go.
He can.
Get of Higgins is doing a fairly game job of trying to come on in and get it even though you don't get enough time.
He doesn't have enough time one second to go it's 14 to 12.
It turned out to be a close match 15 to 12 with the writing time is still 1512 favor of Gary at Oklahoma wins the first 13 points for the Sooners 15 to 12 Gary over Higgins Oklahoma three at Iowa State nothing Now here comes another big one I'll tell you if you want to pick out one that you want to show up to see.
I think this would be one when you check this.
It's going to be a good match.
These boys both like upper body technique.
They both are excellent wrestlers and will be an interesting match.
One 26 Mitchell Kelley of Iowa State up for the first time this year.
Back in the lineup, John Thorne has been little under the weather this week.
So Kelly is in there, but Kelly will be later on at one 18.
Janelle Corey one 18 later on is also in this lineup right cook and now Kyari is ranked number five in the country at £118.
And as we said at the beginning of the program was the highest ranked recruit in the high schools last year.
As everybody in the country was taking a good look at this young man getting a 99 and zero record in high school.
It's just extremely difficult.
Well that the wrestle so many matches these days Kelly against Mel Kyari they wrestled in the Midwest open here in Ames in this very building earlier and Kelly beat Mel Kyari in a very close match and he had to come from behind to do it.
Now you see that now Kyari has the single leg.
And the low single Kelly has the Whizzer is out and now he's behind the throne.
You have to take him to the mat if he has to get in there.
As far as.
I was a nice car move by Kelly, just take away the single, then come back out, go back into the legs and get that right.
Well, Kyari Kelly, who is a strong.
Rider and a who is a strong hitter in behind him now the classic single leg position but Kelly still owns the advantage.
That's the responsibility.
Now Kelly Wallace gets to take the Oklahoma boy down to the mat left it he's got him on his back oh almost had that locked in the cradle position and he puts the legs in right away, which makes it difficult.
And Dan Hill is counting on it too he's not gonna let you stay in there without progress and this is a difficult spot for freshmen because most of know how to be very effective against the legs.
It takes time.
To learn to be effective against, like, a. Stalemate.
So to nothing.
Kelly you can see almost catches him right here around the leg, but he just doesn't quite get his hands locked.
He has the ankle picked.
Had he had the hands locked, it would have been right over to his back.
There is no FDR from New Jersey.
Blenheim, New Jersey, went to Highland Regional School.
99 and zip in high school.
But Kelly's Kelly's been around and they got that little.
Side left on him and took him back out to the mat.
It puts the legs back and it'll be interesting to see how this is going to be interpreted.
He's very effective with these if he has enough time to use them.
The tendency, of course, is not to allow that for very long.
Belfiore almost got away immediately on that.
Keli Goff, kind of hide.
It, does it a little setback and type of thing.
That's what he's doing when he does get to speed instead of.
Affecting his escape.
And he calls Kelly down Hill, calls.
Kelly well, it's difficult now to say that you don't call him when they just get on calling his penalizing glory from Oklahoma a couple times for doing something very similar.
They do need more time to work on top.
That man on the bottom is making every attempt he can to try to score as escape or reversal.
You can be the the the latitude of the right to stay with it.
Kelly went right for the ankle and cut off Valkyrie's first move and then goes up.
It breaks his.
Man down to the top.
You can anticipate both boys Russell three stars record but.
Kelly has several years of college.
Well he has done that is the first.
That is usually the place where an outstanding high school wrestler shows problems when he goes to college isn't.
On the board.
That's right the bottom position this girl here comes up Jerry out still doesn't have it yet Kollar-Kotelly reacted a beautiful move by not Florian and Kelly still with him he.
Still has the legal.
Actual catch phrase reversal on his escape didn't try to pry the arm out with the other leg stalemate so yes yes that's the point where they have.
Trouble is on the bottom they do not learn very effective use of their hands and they're back in high school and they need to do more work on that.
There it is.
What a record that was.
Joe Belfiore goes into a role first thing.
Kelly follows right around.
The clock and saves the point at the period.
A good period for Kelly to do nothing is his lead.
If he had his marching 11 seconds or riding time and Kelly picks down he gets the chance we'll get to see Mercury right there is Harold Nichols.
Is that now.
Kelly had a foot injury to over the Christmas break and through this last month or so of not a break in the foot but it was a very painful injury.
Got to be on the back of the abortion you're there chaplain noticed a.
Caution that's a caution.
On the arm right.
Here we go.
What he's saying there is your hand has to be behind the elbow, not out in front.
I thought he might call Gary from Oklahoma on that same thing, but that's something for the fans to look at.
And that was.
A caution referee downhill.
Now Curry's now has a good hip, tells her he likes to tip the hilt and then he likes he also likes to put the legs on.
So it'll be interesting to see if he can get what he wants out of this.
Goes for the cross face up high.
You can tell.
He likes to dominate people up there on.
Top.
He's dominated by a lot of people in his life.
And it's difficult for some of these young guys can understand what position they should go to.
When you're wrestling.
Some of that just doesn't go over automatically.
Kelly.
Kelly is in a very good position here.
It seems to me it's just a three is hit, doesn't want to roll to his back.
They just pull his head out of it.
He can get our mission to the.
So what's the what's the name?
I think that he's got his eye on it's potentially dangerous.
So again, boy, I guess.
It's still down to.
That's a tough spot for just Corey to be in.
OC blending now is the plug it up.
Bloody nose Bill Kelly goes over to have it cleaned up well we're in the £126 match Chuck pattern and the Oklahoma Sooners won the first one of the close one 14 to 12 and here it's two to nothing in favor of Kelly.
What have you seen so far that tells you how this match is going to come out.
I thought it might be a little more wide open with some throws and what's happening is that they're spending more time down on the mat because as I indicated and I believe Kelly has several years of college experience and knows more about putting his man down, keeping him down and putting pressure on him down there.
Now, Curry knows a little less about how he should get out of there and how he can be effective at scoring his escapes in a reversal.
And he wants to be on his feet.
And the problem they'll cure his head is that Kelly got the first takedown here and then was able to play it his way right till now.
Writing Time to 11 for Kelly Belfiore has coming up close to a minute's worth.
It's been very effective on top so far.
He stopped him on the whistle and then he's put pressure on him.
Now he feels comfortable, you know, he's just got that air of confidence that you can see an athlete that's been very successful in.
He stalemate he brings the legs and from both sides to you that's the first time I think he's coming around the left.
Well he'll let him do this another time.
And then instead of being stalemate, it will be a question for stalling.
So I'm going to have to make his some kind of change but then he'll try to slide right off of this and go into a hip, turn.
To a force, try on the hip, cause the legs in will come up and try to help on the other side.
He's got it in on the other side.
Now, that's the head goes down.
It becomes tough, said Kelly.
There's ways to keep the head and legs and that's kind of one of our first well warning against Al.
Kyari at the top.
Right.
Coach Abel is saying to his boys, Don't do it.
If they do it again, you're going to get penalized.
28 seconds with a two to nothing.
We know, in other words, don't put the legs on because that's getting a call from first all.
Here they are again.
So he's got to be more effective with him now or get him out of it.
And that's how men score.
You're trying to get them out or try to get him in.
That's when they usually will score Kelly's speed.
He should be able to get to that position here.
He's got that rock that this is the throwing position for freestyle rock on that but the.
Period is going to air and it is the end of the period.
It was a it was a two minute ride or Mercury and he managed to take away the riding time advantage.
Kelly had two 11 in the first period.
Now Corey had two in the second.
And now the question is, can Kelly run?
Well, he's done a very effective job so far.
Be interesting to see what no Currie does.
To do nothing.
All right.
Now he has to get to his feet like this stuff.
And now he's got to learn to get his back in front yeah.
So he's not getting his back and dropping his hips down and taking his hips out the way.
So it makes it more difficult.
No one has put himself on his back.
Well, he did put himself on his back potentially dangerous again.
Kelly almost had a reversal last time and the crowd is unhappy because they thought Kelly should have been allowed to continue and get back points.
What they thought was that he had back points when Kirk put himself underneath and then the Furious starting to come out the back door and the legs are twisted around.
So he thought that was going to be dangerous to the knees.
Well, what happened is nothing nothing.
That's right on the scoreboard.
Now, Belfiore is in a great position and he's out and he's behind and now he's ahead three to two.
That was it.
That was a real quick escape and cut his arm through and came right back in on the takedown attempt.
And Kelly is complaining of an ankle injury.
This might be that's the one that's taped up and this might be the one that he had injured all during the month of January.
I made a real quick sweep to get his one point, and then he just stepped in with his leg, the block immediately free these feet came spinning around the other side.
Well, as soon as Kelly sickos position on the mat, he was the fulcrum.
And now Corey, just one around him.
So we have a minute and 23 seconds to go.
In the third period, it's Oklahoma against Iowa State.
Kelly led to nothing until just a moment ago our stand able.
Now this is important right now and his coach can talk to his athlete the injured athlete can't be administered to for the injury that cannot be coached right now I'm sure that coach from Oklahoma is trying to explain to his man you've been warned on the cops because you put the legs in so don't put the legs back in because that's what he got you for.
So you're going to have to be very intelligent about what you do in that top position.
There's Darryl Peterson will have an off the mouth intermission feature with Daryl after the £150 match.
Darryl Peterson ranked eighth in the country, will be wrestling.
Mark Tatum is the last match.
He's hoping that by the time he gets there, we can maybe win the meat for our state.
But first, we're going to have to pick up some more weight victories.
And this is one area that the cyclones need very badly they lost at one 18 up Gary three just came from behind took the lead three to two.
Now he's got to take him down.
He has to work to take his opponent to the mat.
That's the critical factor.
Is he can't stay back there and not work to improve his position.
We're down about.
A minute left, lead up to the score.
He's good with the hip top, but he needs his leg on the bottom side.
Kelly's wise.
You got his arm free.
He keeps the arm free.
So came to come out of Crawford.
He's in good, good spot.
As long as he takes his time, keeps his hips low, he can't get any back points either because he doesn't have the advantage.
Oh, he's got to get his arm across the hip right now and get his arm back across his head.
But we'll give the referee.
Yeah, he.
It's called this call.
And that points a four point swing for Kelly.
It's now six.
The three it's now six to three for Kelly with 20 seconds to go well he's getting stops in the Grammy's.
The only thing with the young.
Man's gun right now he's trying to.
Sit in behind him to take one of those Randy type positions didn't work that time now we're down to five it looks like it looks like Kelly it's a big one for Iowa State it's a season and an experienced guy very very good match by Bill Kelly.
Well that's the second time those men have met and Kelly is the winner for the second.
Time a big one for the Cyclones.
Kelly wins six, the three and now it's 33 in the team score.
We go to £134.
And this is Joe Ceci of Iowa State.
Now we're looking at that reversal and near fall position.
As soon as the reversal was called, it was already in the near fall position.
He was just waiting for the referee and all he had to do is come back and start put pressure toward the head.
All right.
One 34 for Oklahoma.
It's R.J. Miller.
Now he's filling in at a weight where Oklahoma lost three people, three outstanding wrestlers and joke.
Yes, he is a redshirt freshman for Iowa State.
I don't know who you should favor here.
We don't know really how good a barrel there is.
We're going to find out.
Well, I have to imagine that when you're a fourth man deep on your roster, that you're not as good as a coach would like you to be.
That could be.
But you come out of this kind of program.
Yeah.
Beautiful tip there.
Oh, nicely done on that.
Left five tip over there.
What do you call it?
He's in the top position, quite contrary to the normal Kelly.
You know, he's got tipped up here in what they call.
A hip tilt position.
There goes the back down to the back point he has him loaded on the bottom five in the.
Back, a tip toward the mat.
And he got three.
So it's seven nothing.
Now, this is what I always think is what you were talking about in the opening.
If you are better than your man, you better go out feeling bad because your team's going to need it.
Oh, boy.
What's that mean?
We'll always please catch coaches.
Athletes to see those stopped.
I'll tell you, I guess he is sensing the kill here and he's decided he's going to go really work on RB Miller sophomore Carrollton Texas.
It's a fast tempo.
The crowd starts to decide this fast.
This early starts to make a decision.
He has the conditioning to be able to stay with it.
There's long shots but they leave him extended.
Joe gets getting.
His last match was against Ohio State and he lost in the last little bit.
He started fast and had problems in the last period.
And lost the match.
Maybe he have lost.
Here he comes again, losing nine nothing.
Oh, yes.
I heard Coach Nichols.
Just say keep wrestling Joe.
So I'm sure he's concerned about that Ohio State loss of him.
He's gone for a tilt.
Didn't get it.
Had to give up the escape.
It's now nine.
To two should be because he had an escape earlier.
Right.
I came from the wrong.
Score was actually nine to one, now nine to two.
But Jesse is gone for that technical foul well, that was an arm throw by the glass, but he didn't get the hip strike.
And guess he's going to come out of this thing with a takedown maybe.
Yes, I'll it's 11 two again.
He's trying to tip another ref.
Does he have it?
Yes, he does.
He has a Near-fall situation.
And he got two points off.
13.
The two go on for a fourth time.
He's got that trying to come to our shoulders.
Again.
He can get some more.
I remember 15 points and they'll stop it.
If it's a 15 point difference, you more in the two with 20 seconds to go in the first period.
Got him over there.
No.
I don't know if he gave them or not.
That came up to him and that's how it's a technical foul a technical foul.
For Gasol.
Six points for Iowa State and that's where you pick up the big ones and as a matter of fact the cycle fans will probably get.
Pretty excited because they'll have to be favored in this next one.
Joe Gibbons going against Dave Grayson or a technical foul by Kesey in the first period.
That's scoring a lot of points in a short period of time.
And it makes it nine for Iowa State, three for Oklahoma, the free trade.
There's a happy man.
The author of that victory tour.
All right.
Thank you.
All that easy, huh?
Here we are.
142.
And I think the look on his defense feels that he has to do much the same thing.
We don't know much about this, Grayson, your boy, although he had an older brother who was quite a wrestler for Oklahoma.
Yes, he did not.
He's got to shut this thing down.
Right now with a good match against a very good wrestler.
Because Givens gets on a roll after Kelly's win and a win by Jesse could put Iowa State.
Well, out there in Atlanta.
Tempo make a big difference in the final outcome.
Oh.
Yeah.
And Grayson sure did make the first move.
That he was getting tied up off with Tate right here with the chin on an arm.
You know, he's going to try to pull him down away from his base and then take the spin to make that thing work.
You need to be able to pull your opponent forward away from this base and then spin in behind it.
Down on the mat.
You often see Gibbons pin the man's head and shoulders right down and then try to climb right around him over.
He's got a very good high crotch, very good move where he takes his right arm and comes across, stepping into the man in the high cracks maneuver.
You saw it, Jim Gibbons, Joe Gibbons, older brother.
He was an assistant coach of the Iowa State Team Cyclones nine Oklahoma three after 134 on a technical fall by Joe Kedzie in the first period injury time out for the Sooners.
That's when he reached his hand and to go for that high crotch in his hand just came across and whacked him in the nose.
So I'm sure he just got a maybe the start of a bloody nose or at least got hit hard.
That's Michael Carr, one of the car family.
We had a little sort of informal trivia quiz here a little while ago.
Somebody was saying, how many cars have wrestled for Iowa State?
Well, there are three of them in that family, but there have been other cars.
How about Virgil Carr?
I heard a virtual just was named the head of the United Way in Chicago, one of the largest United Ways.
Yes, in the United States, quite a bit.
That's right.
And then somebody might remember to a young man who came down from work, North Dakota or Minnesota, Steve Carr.
That's right.
He was a four time state champion up there.
Yes.
So I don't know if there are any other cars.
Back back before our time.
Right.
It's Iowa State against Oklahoma.
Too, Gibbons and Anderson, they're having a conversation.
Here comes Joe Gibbons back to the center of the mat against Dave Gray Singer, who is a senior from Canton, Ohio.
He's a he's a friend of John Acropolis, the 190 pounder of Iowa State.
They know each other from the same town.
Well, give us put a lot of pressure on him here, but has not affected the offense that they need more to keep the momentum.
Now.
Down Basinger started a duck under and didn't finish it or some kind of an arm drag, and it turned out to be too forgiving.
So he has that same arm tied up as the hip loaded up, but he's going to lose it off the mat.
So he just can't get his near fall points because they'll be off 5 minutes.
20 to go first period.
£142.
When they came off right here in front of us, Doug, I saw that he got hit in the mouth and split his left wide open.
That's the Oklahoma, right?
Yes.
That was just kind of a counter to a drag racing.
You're starting to drag.
And Gibbons dragged him part of that problem on that is it you don't get the upper upper body of your opponent down.
That stays up.
Then he can affect the same move on you that you tried on him.
Only five gibbons on the whistle goes on that tight waist roll by Jeff Grayson Sure it works.
And he came into a double leg right away and almost almost turned that into more than just in a point one point escape.
Yes, he did.
He came right back.
Good, smart wrestling.
Two to one Gibbons leads.
Might be a good spot for Gibbons from Iowa State because now he has a chance to get another takedown and build his lead a little bit rather than standing there fairly told he has good movement from right here when he has that arm locked in.
Grayson Jr thinks he's taking something away.
But Gibbons is very good in this position.
Just has to get freed up but can't get free with his upper body.
Totally meant to take.
We have 42 seconds to go in the first period to the one.
Second about a very powerful young man here and Joe Gibbons.
And that power oftentimes is something that is deceptive to another person.
Just a very powerful.
Animal working for setups here.
In this position that they're in right there was called a two on one sometimes the Russian type.
But you have to be able to be effective with it and keeping your man in right now, the man from Oklahoma staying out toward the outside, he just got warm.
Inside.
Because he's not really staying in on the mat.
But up here, he is thinking defensively and.
Now Gibbons has him out where he can work almost one off Michigan State wise.
Did he get it?
No, no.
Not have it.
By the time they were hit the mat at the buzzer blew.
To the one end of the period.
He is down.
It's going to be Gibbons choice.
He goes down he doesn't expect to be here very long.
We'll see what Geisinger does.
They know less about him and probably about R.A. Miller, that gassy just beat than perhaps some of the other Oklahoma wrestlers.
I'd be happy to tell you that was.
But I don't know how good the was.
Can see his face.
Well, they stopped him with the ankle on the whistle, and now he's reacted to Gibbons move by sitting over the course of crab positions.
But he doesn't have the tone.
Often, Gibbons starts to slide his hips down in a way that he talked a little bit this escape.
Wait a while.
17 seconds of riding time there.
Before Gibbons got out, Gibbons Iowa State, nine Oklahoma three again, that arm drag, Tom.
That's right.
But he again, he he almost got the lead drag going against the boy from Oklahoma because he just didn't get his upper body down tight.
To the mat, didn't get him stuck in tight sometimes looks more like a boxing match than wrestling and they start cutting on the other person.
But what they're trying to do is just get him off balance a little bit as.
You'll the after we showed you a while ago was being taken by Kenny Fisher.
That's the way he prepares for his match.
He'll come up £158.
I think we need to be more prepared than that.
Why?
That was a point.
This was a stall call against Grayson Jr. And it was worth one for Gibbons this time.
Well, even though it doesn't look like he's like Gibbons is doing much, the other man is backing out all the time.
It's very difficult.
To work on offensive wrestling when a man's going backwards.
Gibbons is pretty much a straight ahead wrestler.
He likes to get in tight to his man.
He is strong and can fix a man in position to try to work something out.
It you don't see us coming back at him again all the time.
There he goes to the.
Lay off counter.
But Gibbons is strong, is wise to get cover to position, not try to force him.
Then he's going to take them to six to one and.
Needs to keep right on piling up points.
No, he's got a very good leg.
Protect the good hip to see if they can get those before he goes out.
Out of bounds.
Now with what, seven and 6 seconds?
6 seconds.
In the second period, we have another period to go 2 minutes long.
So now has the leg.
Now just take him back where there isn't a leg and then free the on scores two point takedown.
621 a five point lead without writing time Gibbons has 42 seconds of riding Grayson Jr has 17 a switch by Grayson Jr that was cut off immediately by Gibbons He's rolling them up for a tilt.
Did he get up he got two against an able to give a good imitation of the man having a heart attack everyone.
Said sign maybe in the corner of the screen just throw his arm like what are you talking about here now watch him he just he drives him hard he has an arm just pulls him back over to the back all it has to be a stopped past 45 degrees and stopped.
And I'll give him starts up he has a cradle.
Locked up now this is trouble for that's local hall let's he can pick us up fast as the crowd is doing right he was pushing forward and when he brings this back they're taking better he's one right with him off the mat well the official the official knows what the fans.
Want they say he went out there and got away to move and he should be worried about he went the way he could go.
Way way Gibbons was pushing him.
And that's very difficult to do.
Usually they can't pick your hand up fast enough to put it out in front of you and say you'll crumble in the as you crumble and the man takes you older.
He was lucky to get away that time.
It's eight to one minute.
44 to go in the match.
Gibbons on top.
And there's that little Granby again.
But he just didn't have enough speed, enough momentum.
You got to have height to make that work.
As Gibbons puts pressure on him up, he gets the arm.
That's where the hip folks first to work.
Can't afford to give him your arms.
Well, I.
Think when he gets to the edge of the mat and he sees that this is where I need to work and there's no room.
Gibbons just rolled him out.
Yes.
Well, I think the other man went out to intentionally but it's very difficult to call because Gibbons has got so much pressure on him.
That's the Mid-West tournament.
That is a new competitor of the Midlands Tournament and a very strong competitor of this tournament during the Christmas season.
Now, Gibbons has Reisinger pretty well flat out there.
Now he has the arm.
Now you can see him try to effect some type of movement with that he has the arm.
He puts it back.
On with the man on the bottom, goes with his hips to stay high.
He can hit tilting and zips without Logan.
He's done with another offense like that.
Hook in the arm less than a minute, and that's another penalty on the ball.
Ten.
Nine, the one.
We're right at the edge of the mat.
It's frustrating for Gibbons because he knows he can't go anywhere with a.
Try to get that five or six point win.
You might have to see Gibbons start to let him up and take him down.
There may not be enough time of 45 seconds to be very effective with it.
That's Dan Higgins.
Is reading tonight's program, and it looks to me as you're reading it upside down.
He's a talented young man.
He is going to release him to get a release and take that.
Nine to two to seven point lead.
There is riding time now for Gibbons that he'd like to get a major.
Decision, maybe catch the man on the throw or something like that.
That's going to be a penalty but it's difficult to throw it backwards.
Just like it is to those other offenses.
That's a two point penalties.
11 to two.
Right now, you stand the chance.
If there's another.
One, you lose the match by disqualification.
So you've got to stay in an aggressive game.
With 25 seconds to go yes.
That's a big thing because it would be a six point team victory.
I was in on a.
Carry Gibbons has got his hips don't look.
They can't be effective with Gibbons has got to if he has any time he's going to be out of this one and probably come around he's trying to tie up the arms if they can't get the takedown 2 seconds one and it is a major decision with the riding time it's 12 to two for Gibbons.
Four points go up on the Iowa State Board and that makes it 13 for the cyclones and three for Oklahoma.
And I my own opinion is we're going to need them when they get a couple of weeks up and here comes a very big match at 151 before our intermission.
This is a big one.
In fact the next to all of them, maybe the wrestlers are stronger here at 150 than they are 258.
The next two are going to be close I would say.
Jacksonville, Iowa State against Higgins of Oklahoma.
Higgins has been an outstanding wrestler this year and Jackson beat the number one ranked and Heffernan.
Just last week.
I think these men met in the Midwest championships and Jackson took him down several times and then Higgins countered him to his back and ended up on that match.
So it would appear that maybe Jackson is a superior athlete, with Higgins being the superior unorthodox so we know that he.
Does some unorthodox types of things.
In fact, at Oklahoma, they call him something like The Force of Thunder, and there was one of the.
Higgins wins a little upper body tussle.
Well, Higgins is.
Really a very good athlete.
They feel that he might be one of the best athletes they have on the team.
But he just doesn't do conventional thing.
So what's his Jackson into him?
And here's Higgins just.
Turned it up in the hips.
Nicely done.
Jackson's offense, Higgins two points.
Jackson trying to work the inside trip and he got tripped.
But Jackson is working hard to speed up and get it right and take that one is a snake bite into it.
And actually earning a point is a good job by Jackson Brown scoring.
Two to one.
Now Higgins legs and our outsides.
And this is one of the positions that may indicate Jackson is very good on his long penetrating double.
Well, that's where Higgins he got he's got a nice job with the double three said Jackson has.
Has been stronger and stronger.
As the year goes on.
And he's been particularly strong in the early periods.
Although let's take a look at that double.
This time he got the hips and then he kept on going right on through.
And I don't see how he carried his hips in to and through his opponent.
That's what made that double so effective.
And Higgins had to bail out Harris Higgins.
The Jackson's very good on top.
We saw him do a real good job with Heffernan.
And I think to kind of compliment what you said, he's been very good as an athlete early in matches, and part of that fatigue that's struck in early in the season, he's gradually overcoming because it's more mental than it is literally physical.
He's been very tough here of late.
Jackson of Iowa State with the Cyclones leading 13 to three after four weights comes back to the middle with a minute 19 seconds to go and leading three to two each man has a take down Jackson has an escape Oh.
He's good on top this is a spotter needs to keep his opponent right here keep him down on the mat don't let him get up where he can affect some of that unorthodox type of style takes up the arms well and he's to try to be effective at turning him over with what he's got.
Down here.
He comes around to the other side.
Yes.
I want to get him off the mat.
I want to leave that one foot down, get both feet off, and there's no power Jackson.
Has his man flattened out and he's.
A day when you can just stay there as long gone.
Tuck Yeah.
He's flat out now.
You gotta do something with him.
You get called for stalling on talking.
We've seen that 32 times in this league already.
Let's check the clock a minute.
25 seconds for the writing.
Time for Jackson.
And we have about.
A quarter of on about a half a minute left in the first period.
He has a barrage now on Higgins.
He's got that in.
He just doesn't have the other arm and on the.
Opposite side tied up.
So it can't be effective.
15 seconds to go.
You see the clock up there in the middle here come the time of no penalties.
It was time Coach came out, said, What was that for?
He wanted to know who is getting penalized for one for stalling because he held his fist up in the air.
The referee said, No, I didn't.
I didn't want to penalize anybody.
Stand.
Abel's national championship team was in his first year as a coach.
She was right here.
$1,000,000 right I.
Recall 1974 Jackson try to complete a good strong right here in his first period and he did great of two Jackson.
He came out of that period with almost 2 minutes of riding time he charges to be down.
Higgins wants to go down sit.
Down on the mat you think he wouldn't want two more of it would you.
There's Joe Gibbons who had a big win 12 to two over Grayson Jr put his team ahead by ten rank number three.
Jackson has been very strong in this top position and Higgins has not been very effective.
At getting out and being effective at controlling him.
So it he slips a little and he isn't getting a hold of Jackson.
Jackson is getting a hold of him.
That's what the head level right now.
He has it to a hammerlock.
Let's see what happens here is where's he going to go?
Let's go across this back now.
What he's done this time effectively referee won't let this go a long ways.
You're going to have to do something.
With a sign.
He says hip tilt.
He hasn't always got to be under far enough to lift the man up at the knee.
Now, he does have that point he's got his hip pulled over.
Once you get that arm tied up, well, there are two big points.
Jackson will go right back.
On the other side this time.
Now he's got even a little better position put a lot of pressure on the Oklahoma it's fairly obvious what he's trying to do now.
Even had time to check the bench for instructions and they were giving him plenty of it, too, and he had to let that position go.
But he he has a lot of riding time.
Not a question is that points and staying in there.
This is a this is a.
Dangerous spot for him.
He's got to get him back down.
Good job right there.
See the bottom there regardless of the way we go through.
This match or not, Doug, the bottom man must find.
The man with his back.
Right.
Getting back pressure on him and then he's got to locate him.
Young Hagans from Oklahoma has not done that mismatch.
Going to trouble through the hole first and second period.
Again, the try for a hip.
Tilt, but it's out of bounds.
He's not going to get any back points that way.
We're almost out of time in the second period.
Go back.
Bill Kelly talking to Mike Land, the former Iowa state national champion.
And Jackson of Iowa State gets a little breather, as does Higgins.
While we have shoelace tying time.
Higgins was a cross country man in high school, too.
He was, as you say, he was a good athlete twice and as a cross-country runner.
So he should be able to go 7 minutes here.
You think he's been fairly effective?
It's just that he hasn't.
Control anything Jackson style of controlling and has dominated the not so far club three minute ride for Jackson.
He's got a near fall in that period.
And athletes now five to two now Our next match coming up will be two of the other Iowa schools.
We haven't yet seen your old northern Iowa folks, Chuck versus Lonnie Zimmerman's Drake team.
Don Briggs, coach of northern Iowa.
Now coming up next Tuesday, there is Jackson in the down position, starting the third period trying.
To come out and he's up six 15.
This might be where he comes only chance is just to.
Let Jackson.
Have the offense and then try to counter him because he does some very unusual, unorthodox things from towering might be the only way he can.
End because he actually is down seven to two because of the righty time that Jackson has and he can't erase.
Now, let's see who's been warned.
Nobody but Jackson is here on the leg.
This is what Higgins was not able.
Was able to counter the last match.
He came back current.
There is a oh by Higgins, and Jackson's in serious trouble.
It's turning in the last minute that he does the well power he's got him in a real test that goes get the arm tied up.
It was.
It was Jackson's off.
That's a put to him.
And Higgins is countered this is what they call him, the force of funk.
And it's a tough position.
It's tough that a three point nearfall and Jackson has fallen behind the takedown for Higgins and a three point nearfall at seven to six.
There's plenty of writing time for Jackson.
It is literally a it's a draw by now.
And whoever can get this last set of points, holler they can get him will win.
What's the matter?
Now?
Controlling things.
Jesse Jackson got stopped.
Put on his back and sure, that wore him out some, but he doesn't have to stay right here.
He's got the arm tied up.
He has to be effective.
The three in his arm go in his face, scoring out of state cannot dominate him in that long and then be this tired.
So just more.
Mental, as I said, of.
Mental fatigue.
Seven to six.
Yeah, he's in there when he comes down.
There's the leg, the post, that's the power.
Flips right on.
The Christian with his leg kicks into his back.
Boy, how to get from a six to two lead looking like you're going to get a takedown and all of a sudden you're behind.
Some of the six.
Anticipate those kind of things that Jackson's been good on the bottom on that first move that's a good stop here he is broken down again.
Got to be able to build up base up to throw some hands and get back to 8 seconds.
It's a draw.
If he does not get out right now I don't waste 48 year old ball and that's a.
Warning against Higgins for keeping the parallel position understandable.
What's the explanation.
I tend to agree with you on this.
From what we've seen so far, to match the man on the bottom is making his offense go.
Cap stops in and he has to try to be effective and it's going.
To be a draw because of the writing time the Jackson piled up.
Boy, I'll tell you, those big moves can really turn things around.
Campus and exciting.
That's how state down the road ends up in a draw.
Deserves a better take on that now.
15.
The five is now the two.
Star Higgins and Jackson go 77 and a big five point move by Higgins right in the middle of Jackson's take down Turn that one around 50 to five Well we hope you're enjoying our public television.
Ninth consecutive season of college wrestling coverage.

We're back at Hilton Coliseum, where the Iowa State Cyclones have a ten point lead in the first five weights over the Oklahoma Sooners.
15 to five.
And we'll see Darrell Peterson coming up in the last match.
I think it's going to make a difference.
That heavyweight matchup may be that one that decides it tonight.
We don't know.
We have one 58 coming up next with Dave Ewing against Ken Fisher.
They're both if you looked at the thing, the entire team's schedule at the beginning of the year, you though they were not the number one man.

The 16th.
It's Oklahoma State at Iowa and on the 23rd, the rematch between the Cyclones and the Hawkeyes.
That'll come from Carver, Hawkeye Arena and Iowa City.
Now you see down hill the referees from Harlan Iowa going out to the middle of the map.
We're ready for one 58.
The Iowa State coaches are ready.
Harold Nichols retiring at the end of this year after 37 years on the job magnificently successful Ewing against Cam Fisher of Oklahoma.
These are at the beginning of the year as I started to say we're not the number one ranked man at this position for each team.
You know I'm sure that Oklahoma would just love to have Johnny Johnson in here right now.
John Johnson, in case you hadn't heard the third ranked man, he finished sixth in the Nationals last year.
He has a degenerative disc problem in his neck and he's going to have some surgery.
And it's serious enough.
His his wrestling career is in doubt.
So we'll hope for the best for John.
Certainly he gets the first take down, a big take down.
You know, my sense I like on that that nice take that Iowa State needs this win.
That's right.
Although this is not as we say, these are not the top ranked men on these two teams.
It counts every other match.
That's right.
And they need this win very close right there.
Just a little mistake a stand in two parallel.
Stand able coach at Oklahoma won't see that move again.
There he reached inside, cut the leg and has the arm.
So it took him down, almost caught him on his back.
If he kept that arm just a fraction longer, it would have been a big move for him.
Ken Fisher, a freshman from Manhattan, Kansas, Kansas State University, doesn't have wrestling.
Well, there's none of the Kansas schools do except the for Hayes.
He's got a lot of pressure on Fisher Ewing from Ohio State, just intentionally released him right there.
Two to one is a scar £158.
We begin the second half of this Iowa State Oklahoma beat.
Was putting pressure into him and right now he's just got to get his head up out of there.
You instead came up and gives him a little better position this is the same position he was in earlier, Doug when he cut him in that little throw.
He's going back to the center again.
The first match tonight.
No, Gary beat Dan Higgins and then Bill Kelly beat Joe Mercury in a big match.
And then it was a technical fall for guessing, a major decision for a defense here is unheard of.
A single leg.
Try to take away the other one.
Can he do it?
They're awfully close to the edge of the mat.
Just needs to be able to.
He can be saved right here.
But get Curtis, not be in a hurry up, check it out, find it followed all the way up and get that arm off the waist.
That's what's keeping them from getting a takedown right now.
He's going to be able to get this.
Order one takedown again for you in.
What's been one of the hardest working of the Iowa State wrestlers.
He's done a good job so far of affecting his takedowns, being patient while he gets the head inside.
No, no.
He's got the leg locked up.
You need to break that inside arm dancers.
You have a Navy ride or something like that.
He has a cradle, but Fisher will take it out of bounds.
I think he's had this locked up twice.
So that's an indication that Fisher from Oklahoma is starting to stand up.
He just follows yourself.
So he's got the leg and he follows it up toward the body.
But the Whizzer is preventing the takedown.
So he gets back to his feet and then takes him backwards where there isn't any braces and then scores is takedown.
For the one in favor of you and he has a minute and 12 of writing time.
19 seconds are left in the period Fisher rolls you and comes out still in a position of advantage.
Oh well he's getting blocked up pretty nice this is almost court viewing twice on the end so now we know both men have kind of a thing they like we know Ewing has a cradle on top and that Fisher has given that to him.
They're not controlling hands.
And we know that when Ewing tries to reach under and knock Fisher down off of his base, that Fisher tends to wing that arm down and bring his hips up over top.
So those are things to look for as the match progresses, see if either one gets it.
Tackles 3 seconds to go Ewing that right down to the ankle, the blocking, the last second heroics there for the one that's Dan Shay listening to the tunes here as he gets ready to go at £190 he's found a local station I'm sure and he's ready to go that's the way he warms up now number two rank man and he's tough we'll see him up against John Acropolis later where a 158 now Iowa State 15 the sooners five and Ewing lead to 158.
We got to a but he has no control now I got a chance to this game right now.
I want to to take it out for Ewing to escape so Fisher Fisher is going to have to prove himself on his feet.
He's been clearly dominant here a year from our state in the starting position put in a lot of pressure on Fisher try to work his offense sometimes and to do that rather than just letting up a little bit.
Now he's back on the way he's done.
It's a matter now of doing one or two things.
Find the footing, go out away from him or go in and find the body and take him away.
He doesn't have braces.
The wizard there, he's still got that.
No control.
Yet.
Eric Tracy back in the.
Six the two single leg takedown by debuting.
The intentional releases and now to try to let him have an escape young man Fisher comes right back into and doesn't let you get up.
It's a little costly mistake now.
Didn't know did he give him the escape he did.
And it's a reversal now.
He hasn't given anything yet.
Nothing yet.
Flat out calls it an escape.
63.
That's it.
Didn't have control in that position with the leg up.
This is Ken Fisher.
He's the nephew of a famous football player named Pat Fisher.
Played for the Redskins.
If you remember, he had Nebraska his college days.
Well, you ain't has not been effective in this position.
He's been affected more open with that single.
So it'll be interesting to see what he does in here.
Here's where he's been good out here.
And Missouri putting the pressure on.
But sorry.
You know, I've got to say, Fisher looks like he's coming at him from a lower position area now.
He's gone into a deeper crouch one 8 seconds to go.
He's kind of trying to protect from getting low single.
So he stand keeping his hips down.
There's that low single getting back.
In there again.
This is the third time he's been there.
Allen turned into a high single.
Pulled him up out of it with the laser.
That's what kept him from getting taken down.
Now Fisher is in on the leg and Ewing has to.
Struggle with a with a Whizzer.
So he's got the leg block with his toe.
You can see it up pass Fisher's toe.
That's what's keeping Fisher from getting in behind.
Not much time left.
And so this is where the second period will end, six to three.
So you just got so many good wrestlers in that position.
Oh, gets that play.
Well, that's one of our camera people doing a somersault with a camera attached to Iowa State Cheerleaders contest 63 Fisher gets the top position.
This is the first time he's been here.
He has no takedowns and this is his period to start in the right Big Mac is a nice set.
Up he came across.
Don't that change the pressure wisely to set out with the put to him.
723 Ewing has dominated every facet of this match so far.
Top, bottom and on the feet.
He's in a position where he feels good.
If he can step past that leg.
He had an advantage just let the legs slip out there.
Now he has riding time as well.
So neither man can be a very effective with or head way down like that.
Their heads are blocking their opponent from being able to penetrate and off the edge.
It makes it a lot easier for either guy to do.
Some Iowa State coaches are telling Ewing to move his feet they move around.
There's a nice.
Step down from the field that he can lean and he is.
In the for now, the basket he comes again.
Same type of maneuver.
He just gets Fisher leaning into him, then snaps him down with that that's where the coaches have really helped Ewing.
They see this.
They be up to him.
Your man's leaning on you.
Snap him out of that tied up position.
I'm happy Sooners watching this one.
Ewing leading nine to four with a minute left.
And if he does win, let's say once a three point decision it would be 18 to five of a 13 point lead for the Cyclones and three very strong Sooners coming next they would have to rack up a lot of points because Iowa State probably is favored at heavyweight but number eight ranked Darrell Peterson a lot to look forward to here underarm spin which failed Ewing has countered that it's 30 seconds to go 924.
And that's positioned near the edge it's hard for either man to score.
Because the other guy can go on now they come back to the center.
19 seconds left and a five point lead.
For you in your hands not bad in this position if he can get him coming in and he pulled out of the program like this you know scores a nice take down right at the buzzer 11 the four and riding time makes it one of the four.
And that's another point for the team that's a big take down there.
That's a major decision.
Definitely a big point.
Very big.
Well I'll tell you keep shooting until the end that could be the difference in the lead right now.
That was off a Higgins shot to him.
12 to four is the score 99 and it's now Iowa State 19 and the Sooners five.
Well if we're going to make an interesting first stand able have done it because they've set a problem for these Oklahoma wrestlers they have to really make some hay here in the next three or four weeks so.
Well this is the power that they've got these next three guys so it'll be interesting to see what happens now this is a dangerous spot in a way for LaViolette from Oklahoma because he likes to come out very powerful and he's wrestling a man that can throw.
Solomon Tar of Iowa State only he's a sub 500 wrestler, nine and ten.
And John LaViolette, who is an extraordinarily talented wrestler, for Oklahoma, who has not yet I guess observers would say, done what people thought he would do in college.
And there's a throw right away on Solomon Carr's on his back and back points.
It's a four point move.
Is that power?
As you said, he does have a lot of talent.
Give him a little experience and I think he wanted to wrestle Van hard still today because in our state, again, ranked a little bit above him.
But that our state is not in the lineup for Iowa State and has been for several weeks.
Again, put.
This as that bad knee and I'm sure they're resting and make sure that it's totally healthy before they put him in take no chances.
Some kind of bleeding problem with it.
Bloody nose I think on the Oklahoma side let's see that throw.
You see he tries the foot sweep, but he has his hips in position.
There's the left with the leg and under the arm.
A lot of power when you have one leg down.
You know, you could do worse.
I guess maybe we're all learning a little something from you, Chuck, along the line of excellent old coaches who were right.
I hear that all over just to watch the legs in those situations.
So watch those elevators and what the the man with the balance can do with that leg.
That's the power.
Yes.
The the one on the mat supplies power.
The other hand, just lifts hard.
He's got to stop.
What Solomon needs to do now is get to his feet.
No, wrestling down here on the mat right here.
John Love Island of Oklahoma.
He was another of those tremendous high school wrestlers in Midwest City, Oklahoma.
He went through the last three years of high school undefeated.
And he has the power.
You can see why it might intimidate a number of young high school wrestler and his work on this on this head.
Try if he gets under that arm, gets the head pinched off, he can turn this man over with.
This is more or less a freestyle, but he's got to get that arm out of the way.
He's probably willing to give up the escape right here.
The attempt to get his opponent over.
Potentially dangerous position.
It's hard to turn the upper body one way when the hips are turned the other, isn't it?
Most of us don't bend that much in there with that two feet between our belly button on our shoulder blades.
For two, nothing stand able is up to complaining about something.
I don't think Stan Able has endeared himself with the fans here at Dalton Coliseum over the years.
For what reason?
I don't know.
I off in favor of Love Island cars out.
He was left free from the standing position.
He comes in on the leg, but Love Island twice with him right out of that injury.
All that proposition again, Carr is going to try it well.
He's in deep on it and he's made two good efforts on the same move.
And this is this is his strength.
You love it.
Of course, he's moving right into level.
It's two steps past the leg.
He's got the arm tied down and that's just balance that pulls the violet out of that.
He comes right back and doesn't again.
Watch it.
Now watch the balance of the man from Oklahoma.
He's ready.
They just come right out of that highbridge and step up over top.
So this is a very difficult position for most athletes to get in and for the other one to get out.
Love Island looks very you could tell he looked very relaxed in that position.
I would be shaking in my boots.
I would think so, too.
You live by the sword and die by the sword in that one.
That's right.
And Oklahoma knows they need to win big here.
So this is that.
They're going for the falls where they can get they don't want any three to two wins out of these favorite wrestlers.
They want pins and so carrier decisions are down by 14 with four matches to go and Iowa State favorite at heavyweight.
It's been very uncomfortable I'm sure for level up from Oklahoma because he can still wrestle only up to the level of his competition and now he's put in a position where he must go out and wrestle hard all the way.
Bloody nose again LaViolette he put a flag and it goes to the side let's figure it out let's let's assume we never can assume anything.
You don't have anything else to talk about, Chuck and look at the score.
There's Harold Nichols.
You talked.
You assume a few things.
Let's assume that Darryl Peterson wins a decision at heavyweight by three, by a three point by a margin.
That makes three points for Iowa State.
That would be 22 to five.
That's 17 point difference.
That means three falls for Oklahoma to win.
That's right.
And I'm sure Stan Abels done his arithmetic that way, too.
I'm sure he's got these guys pumped up and there's somebody that's enjoying this match here.
That's how they're in the cars.
It's Michael.
I believe there's no.
Yeah, so that was Steve Metzger Russell last year.
Another roadside bye Love Island.
He leads by four to one.
He's going to be throwing a lot of stuff a lot of be fun to watch.
As Chris is all those matches where both boys like the same kind of thing.
So it'll be interesting to see who makes the offense.
We have 10 seconds to go.
You see the clock up in the center there.
This is the first period at one 67.
Oklahoma and Iowa State is 19 to five a takedown blitz.
Duck under right there very quick.
And it's 621.
See how quick that duck hunter was he was under his opponent behind him on the mat in less than 2 seconds.
This is Laval it's choice he's happy to be on top he'll stay there and he takes up half.
Time to go.
See how quick that duck under his hips in underneath good penetration oh.
Now we're coming back to life back.
He was.
Very violent perfectly willing to let it happen because he wants to throw it.
He got another takedown.
He'll take a technical foul he get it.
Right when he does very well.
You can see in that one that he just missed.
That is he likes to get his head in underneath the arm and then he arches his hips and underneath and takes the man over with his hip.
That nose is continuing to bleed.
You want to put up another plug in there, a little bit.
One cut it in half.
Cut it in half.
The voice of the referee, Dan Hill, got it.
More than half LaViolette lead six to two.
He leads also.
And lots of blood here.
I think so far, it's good job.
But more than four.
They're more irritants than they are painful.
It's just something that happens all the time to athletes.
Like my guys.
Back at it.
We have 35 to go in the second period, six the two of our.
Quick little shots in there by Solomon Carr from Iowa State.
But they haven't really gone deep and all the way through so they have been very successful and he's got that arm tied up, but it just hasn't been effective Oh.
Oh, no, no.
That was one of the lay offs on his car, but he just powered his way out of it.
On the other.
Hand, it's the one thing it might have done is.
Prevent LaViolette from taking him down, and that's well oh, he has mobile on his back.
That's what he does so well.
It moves, man.
He's got their shoulders very close I'll tell you, it looks awful closer for a second.
Okay.
It's a three point fall.
And of course, the Iowa State man says he pinned him, he pinned and defended well, he doesn't claim until he.
Says he can.
Tell the.
Referee's hand hits him all it's now seven to six.
In favor of Carr.
So you step past that right now.
This time he's got the arm set down tight and gets past the leg.
That's what makes it work.
You saw him traded his he earlier.
This time he got him on by five point moves.
That was one it almost was the end there, too, Chuck.
I'll tell you very close.
You need a camera angle under the mat.
30 seconds.
To go.
That's a lot of match left here.
Obviously, Karl on top.
He's got live.
Violence.
Attention again.
Certainly now he's got that like the most quiet violence seems to feel like.
In watching that he.
Can just power his way out of everything.
Doesn't always work that way.
He's right.
In time is practically even here and this has become a very interesting match.
As I'm sure coach Abel's philosophy is gone.
Right up the window.
Seven to six car leads by one.
No riding time advantage.
Either way, there's a crowd of Hilton.
They're having a good time tonight.
John Love Island wrestling tonight at one 67 with David car starting on top third period.
But at seven out of cutting loose 77.
I don't think we've seen the last throw this match.
I know they're going to get in there again.
At least give somebody.
The opportunity to bump hits solid in car we've.
Got cracked in the forehead with Levi.
Let's head right into that arm tied up in the two hour long difficult news that we're if you wanted to go to the high.
Crotch off that wasn't able to do.
It, the referee may very well put him away from it.
Fans want to win here and I'm sure that they can see the potential for well, Oklahoma needs more than a win I think they need they need a big win.
And they're just tightening up.
Now that he has taken his legs with them, they're kind of reaching their arms sticking their head like that.
But they're not penetrating.
They're low.
Oh 54 card and he has a I'll look down on his back again but not a miracle.
No no but he did pull through his legs that time made it very good.
Well let's to this crowd people making a lot of noise and Hilton deep he gets what's his body going through walks his legs and with it doesn't stop very.
Effective Devin.
Touched down on a double leg by car.
The time 45 seconds to go as they oh boy oh how about that 11 the seven he's wrestling outstanding natural.
He came from six the one.
Down he stayed with it that's what coaches like to see the fans appreciate when you're down 61.
Means nothing as long as you'll stay in the match.
There's Michael Card giving his brother I'll tell you if this holds up this is why our producer Doug Brooker put Solomon's picture on the on the opening there at least he had a feeling something like this was going to happen.
He sets to detonate just a caution.
For a false start caution on the card mark is definitely in the driver's seat.
Now if he keeps his head.
That's about yeah I get caught on his strange positions he's got an opportunity now help coaches allow 11 to seven in favor of Solomon Carr and he has 9 seconds to go and he has some backup got the arm tied up he holding more in this holding there on that is that he got three he got three to two.
Boy there's a big win for Solomon Chi's biggest for the year makes him a very happy young man oh look at the Iowa state crowd and they're really happy about Carr's 13 the seven when he came.
He scored 12 of the last 13 points so he was down six to one going into the second period and near the end of the second period he caught love violet in a five point move and almost finished and the team score is now Iowa State 22 and five for the Oklahoma Sooners 22 to five 17 point difference and in order to win the Sooners have to win three straight balls.
Back but I don't think that's going to.
Happen.
Well here we go 170 71 of the best wrestlers in the United States, Melvyn Douglas ranked number two but maybe he should be number one is playing just Bob gasp.
And he shows you why he's.
Quick very quick.
Quick and strong.
Oh, I don't know what else.
You have to be a coach.
And it feels that he might be the best athlete on the team.
He's been doing a great job this year for him so far.
Now he's just nominated Young Gassman.
From Ohio State.
Look at that power top as the leg tipped over.
Now he's got it quarterback back bounce four.
To nothing Yes my sophomore honors Grove, Illinois 25 and 11 this year he won his last match against Ohio State on an impressive fall but he's in there with he's in there with trouble.
And locked up fairly tight with that.
It just kind of let him out.
First escape first point for gas makes for the one.
Now I know the gas man has good penetrating low shot that comes into his left side.
Like that.
Yes.
But he didn't penetrate that very deep.
You can reach the left of the arm and reach for it.
Didn't take his lower body in.
And yet Douglas says all types of offense, he does a lot of things well, as we said, is very powerful.
And real quick.
Well, Melvin Douglas had a say and I'm happy thing happened to him last year in the national championships.
He was in the semifinal round and didn't make weight.
As very.
Unhappy and was disqualified from the tournament.
So he would have been an all-American just by making it to the semifinals.
He could have finished no worse than six.
I'm sure he.
Learned something by that his restaurant a little bit more intensely this year than he has in the past.
Year.
That's his record.
Well, last year he lost six times 29 and six.
This year he is 27.
Did we say 20?
17 one he leads 41 over Gasper, but Iowa State leads in the meet 22 to five over the number two ranked Sooners, the Cyclones have either one or draw at all.
Those big ones, all those close.
Spin, they're made all the way so far not here a step five nice for the.
Curb I guess a couple a couple of interesting moves there.
Both men.
It's like going to that's good athletic talent in the quarter both off base you Douglas.
Comes with this kind of lay back weight off on you see what you're going to do and then come off and feed off the.
Referee warns both men.
He kind of senses that there's not much going on also.
We have just a few seconds to go 15 seconds to go here this time Douglas has the two points.
It's almost like he wants to go and he needs the points he goes harder and is more effective in getting it.
Into the first period.
Six to one.
Douglas, the up or down and it is the choice of the Iowa state man gasping does picked up that place Douglas went down right away I think he assumed that.
Nice penetrating high crotch look at his follow that look at him follow that with his body very good.
Gaskin is not a big rider he does not like to ride much better.
And out goes Douglas this one does for Gassman seven for Douglas.
After that escape.
It didn't look like Douglas wanted to be ridden very much.
He got popped right up out of there.
But in order to win, Oklahoma Sooners have to win pens in all three of these last matches.
They have to win one here.
Dan Shade has to win one and Mark Tatum somehow has to win one against Darrell Peterson.
That heavy.
Well, they get to they could score technical fours getting their opponent by 15 or more points, which he give them the same and they really have to get going on.
It looks like he got hit in the head by head right there when it went up and head.
Take down for Douglas two and Gassman is jarred a little bit.
When he went under his head when he went underneath Bob Gassman from Iowa State his head hit him in the face and here they come again you can see he steps in deep his head just popped him right in the face right there you can see him lift up.
Yeah, it was the head.
And getting to know.
And I have a state trainer is having him count fingers.
You know that.
You know that routine.
I don't like it eating.
No I didn't like it then.
I don't like it now.
You always hate to see an athlete get injured.
It's a rugged enough sport.
Injuries always play a part in all sport.
You hope that they never happen to anybody, that they're going to be severe.
You hope they never happen at all.
These back up and moving around now.
Okay.
Yeah I was say should be down.
Martyred and able.
Sends his man Melvyn Douglas back out and Douglas leads nine to one and Douglas would like to get this technical.
Fall you can now he's going to try to get into the scoring.
Position so.
Oh it's it's when he cuts loose in spurts on the offense that's when he becomes effective he's so explosive.
Was he explosive.
11 to two he doesn't give you time.
Well you think about what you're going to do.
Now he comes through here so much it's not that he just comes to you.
And that's the thing that makes him effective.
When he comes into his opponent this time, Bob gasp and he goes right on through him.
And that makes him effective because he's got his legs with him and he's powerful.
Okay.
Right.
You're probably intentionally release him again, not.
Get in here.
And it's 11 03 an eight point lead.
There's another attempt at arm drags another one he's got the hips controlled this time but he's got to get it a little closer.
He's trying to muscle his way through that instead of finishing off.
That's right good work in.
42 seconds second period an eight point lead for Melvin Douglas Oklahoma trailed by 17 and needs three pins or technical fouls.
However they can look those six pointers together they have a pin are coming up next Dan Shay he got 12 falls last year to lead his team and he'll be wrestling John Harrop loss of Iowa state and then come the heavyweights Darrell Peterson ranked number eight for Iowa state against Mark Tatum what he's got of Oklahoma a talented heavyweight who has been up and down.
Yes that's true.
I'm not sure that Douglas has enough to be able to score that many points against Gasol.
But we have 2 seconds to go.
Into the takedown there.
If he is going to be effective here, I'm just not sure he can get it done here.
Well, he made a three point gain in that period.
He started out 621 leading a, he ended up 11 to three.
He won that period five to two.
He leads by eight.
He does not have riding time.
He could get it by six more seconds to ride.
Or if they got enough takedowns he would have riding time.
But he's got to just be in a hurry.
But so far he just hasn't been in the hurt because you have to score seven or eight takedowns this period after release, you know, go back up so he's got to get back.
He's going to get the technical fall.
Or get near fall points somehow.
And he has to get in this.
Position.
Now, he was affected here.
Watch him push with that pull that pushes.
With the tone he's going to lift with the leg and that just goes to put on the shoulders of the ball.
And he did it.
He did it.
And he has Gasol on his back.
And gets free.
Now.
He probably will let him out of this position.
Better let him out so that he does.
So he gets his three foot three point Near-fall awarded and.
And the three 14 to three and he has riding time.
He's got to get one more of those if he's going to be effective or that he starts into the takedown routine he has to be in a big hurry.
All right he has a minute to go in the three and 11 point lead for Douglas and he has to get a 15 point advantage to him on the technical fall and Oklahoma needs first move again so important that up comes Gasol he is not out yes.
Area there he is okay 14 to four ten point lead right right.
I will say coaches want Gasol to move from side to side.
Wanting to move off to his right not stand still take away Douglas his offense foul.
Because he keeps.
Mobile he's a moving target there is a now he got the throw doesn't quite effective.
Six in tomorrow I'll tell you you never have Douglas quite down to give him the power oh.
Oh wow an intentional relationship yeah that's an 11.
Point and 11 point lead.
Now that oh he's got a close to 18 to five looks to turn him over.
In 5 seconds here.
He would, he would get the ball.
Well I don't know.
I don't know.
Oh no.
But Stan Abell got a pleading look on his face.
Yes I did.
It didn't quite work.
Oh well all right.
19 05.
It's a 14 point superior decision for Melvyn Douglas over Bob Gassman.
And so it is now let's take a look at that.
Really heart comes into him drive right on through and that's it makes a takedown effective.
We talked about that so much go to your opponent and through your opponent you ready.
So it's a 12 point Iowa state lead 20 24 for Iowa State over ten for Oklahoma two matches to go now in order to get a tie.
Oklahoma has to win two finals in a row.
All right.
Can't be any worse than a tie for Iowa State.
John Psaropoulos is in there with a tough customer, Dan Shade.
Right.
Number two in the country laughs as at least the first offensive move, although he wasn't able to pull off a takedown.
And in this position, Shade likes this because he's wrestled a lot of Greco in a lot of first thought.
There's a nice under arms.
Jim comes in behind his opponent for his two point takedown.
And.
Has picked on for say.
He just very seldom see a good athlete pick a man up from the rear standing position anymore.
They almost always side step up and then lift them from the side.
That's what makes that so effective at getting back to the main.
To do nothing.
Well, let's wrap up.
Let's go to we said he's lost only one match this year, shaved, lost to Golden of Iowa to win gold.
But by one point.
Oh.
He's been improving steadily in that one year, he went down to 177.
Now he's back up and I'm sure he feels more comfortable.
190 got a pretty good range of young man.
John Acropolis a junior from Canton, Ohio, said the same hometown as Dave Grayson Jr, who was wrestling for Oklahoma at one 42.
Jay does it on the leg.
He's in their deep now.
What he has to do is just make us a movement, keep the other man off balance.
But Rob Plus is doing a good job there using the Wizard to keep the pressure on Still no take down.
The Whizzer that underhook with the.
Arm now he's got to drop his hips away from Roethlisberger to take down a rattlesnake to hold the hips so he's going is a ball.
And it's 41.
As you said he's such a pin or shade has really a good chance before he graduates of the clips and Danny Hodges all time pin market Oklahoma state and that's because he just continues to put the pressure on and keep the man toward his back.
On family.
For the one minute 18 left in the first period yeah Jade went riding.
On the leg yeah he's just a leg center and a half.
Is barely affected with that he can get the parade down on top of the back of the head then he'll be effective at it if you haven't seen him have a chance to work in here very much the referee usually has been letting them go about this length of time, so next time he'll stalling.
While the face of wrestling has changed a great deal in not very many years, has it shot?
Certainly, yes.
You don't you can't stay on top of the people over anymore.
So you're already forced to go to that freestyle, take the takedown takedown.
And the scarring has now caused it to happen that way, too.
You can win by a technical foul without getting a body back.
And it certainly has.
I think that you probably as a coach had to make that kind of adjustment to you.
We saw it coming here in the early seventies.
Movement started to be made sometime in the 73 to 74 time span.
I was in deep on the single again.
Rochester's a nice job not dropping the 20 seconds to go in the first period.
And it's a two point lead for Shane.
For strapless really has control of this position right hip places bodies in shapes and power just takes him all over.
The border to say again that Iowa state leads by 12 and Oklahoma wins by two falls or technical fouls in order to get a tie in this piece.
I don't think they can get that done I don't.
We're at Hilton Coliseum College Wrestling series the voice of the analyst is out of Chuck Palace you know for 18 years the coach at the University of Northern Iowa changes is out there in 17 seconds makes it five to.
He doesn't mind being up here this upper body lock position she's a very good freestyle wrestler so he'll be there if you'll let it be there.
But Acropolis bends his body over and it takes him out of position keeping the head in the way takes him out of position this is not going away, but thoughtful, I'm sure, the last several weeks.
Oh.
Well, especially the big shock was at one 67, I would say it probably was.
Solomon Carr beat John Le by a little 13 to seven with a near fall.
They throw in the last few seconds in the second period and then a bunch of takedowns with their falls in the last three.
Has it locked up in this front headlock position.
They just got to try to pull him.
Out away from his face.
Krishnamurthy affect the takedown.
She just didn't get him off base enough didn't pull it forward, open what was behind it very nicely.
Trade leaves five to two we have 40 seconds to go in the second period Dame scored 22 for Iowa.
State ten for Oklahoma want to get in here too deep.
To see those that power reckless.
And got the takedown it's Shady's take 72 he now has three takedowns.
You know with the emergence of Iowa state program coming right here in the last few weeks making the progress Oklahoma center is you know this could go down as a major upset I'm not too sure how major when they lost Johnston and a couple of those other people Johnny Johnson 158 but they've wrestled very well.
Iowa State I think has taken the second team in the country to task here.
And stand able is not very happy with this part of his road trip he wrestled with Drake.
Take your home I have.
One night ago Dan Shay at 72.
You saw Darrell Peterson warming up for the heavyweight match over on the side coming right into the second period, seven to two.
But part of it is the frustration of being behind and knowing that you're going to lose.
But part of it also has to be the fact that is athletes just kind of wrestling the way he wanted them to wrestle a couple of these guys that he thought could get six pointers are not getting them started up.
Let this man go, 73.
That's an awful lot of points to try to get on takedowns, but he'd like to get a throw in here probably.
That's I'm sure he's looking for a takedown through the back and Ruthless bends over so much he can't do that you can get him to stand upright.
You have a chance.
Not one he's got way over.
Acropolis shot that got him momentarily underneath but shed wasn't able to keep in there.
We have a minute and a half to go.
Singles won't win the for him, but it would win the match for him.
That's what he's doing now is can't affect what he wants in this position or he can throw just hips are too far back for him.
That's no problem.
Just doing a nice job in this match walking off everything will change.
But that is so far here in the last group you had coaches running the sync the Whizzer and deep use that power.
Leg elevate the leg gets done on the crowd got the wrist tied up is that he just didn't elevate that leg lost the.
Laser now so he's not very effective well so is the takedown.
Kind of three shaded in the leg his referee already is counting and that that's a change these years isn't it.
It's it is the start again guys googling.
Somebody has blood I see shade there's a lot of coverage of it's not just his blood yeah.
It takes a lot of time it takes a lot of time on those legs to knock the man down and put a lot of pressure on the ball and make them effective.
Less.
Anderson.
That's right.
He was the first national champion.
No Harold Nichols ever had to do so.
I kept him around.
Sure.
Started an error for him.
He did two.
That's right.
Nine to four is the score for shade after the escape and if miraculous and he certainly will.
Have versions of it from getting pinned in the last 7 seconds.
Iowa State is going to beat Oklahoma tonight and the second.
Fans can relax while they're watching Darrell Peterson.
There it is.
When writing time.
It is a 10th of four win for Dan Shade of Oklahoma City.
Making the score.
22 for the Cyclones and 13 for the Sooners.
But it's Iowa State's meet Dan Shade ranked second in the country looking for a rematch.
Somewhere along the line with Wayne Golden.
He hopes for the national title and Outcomes after.
You see John Aravosis there for a moment, we're going to look at the two heavyweights.
Darrell Peterson ranked number eight for Iowa State on the right ways about £350.
And Mark Tatum, a sophomore from Ponca City, Oklahoma.
For the Sooners.
Well, there's there's a lot of size difference here.
That hundred pounds makes a big, big difference.
And young Tatum likes the double.
He likes to get in low.
You go in low on a big man like this.
Not only can you lose the takedown, you can't get hurt, but becomes very important kind of throwing his style on.
He does have some throws come in and lock under his arm.
But I think Peterson has got enough height as well as the weight to affect the defense.
They had a pretty good match last year in the big eight championships, which Peterson won.
But it was not all that easy.
Oh.
However, since a little better heavyweight this.
Year, he certainly is.
I think.
He's wrestling a little better and he's got more control of his body, doesn't waste as much motion he deserves to be eight because he's doing better things and has a better out of team.
Peterson.
The Iowa State spent two years in junior college ranks where he was a national champion one year after finishing second the year before.
Oh, no score.
Oh, that's most big, man.
They kind of get into this lane on each other.
Push position.
Tatum seems to be powerful enough not to get pushed out of the team.
Well, you know, from the waist down, he doesn't look a lot different in size.
Head out there and a lot of power in the legs.
Yeah.
You can hear Coach Nichols perhaps yelling over the P.A.
system to get his head out of there.
That's one of the reasons why Tatum is not getting pushed out is because his head's in on Peterson's chest.
Darryl Peterson of Iowa State may have and Mark Tatum of Oklahoma for the Sooners who are going to lose our second beat of the year, they lost to the two great big ranked Iowa teams.
They lost to the Hawkeyes earlier.
Donald Donald Norman.
They're losing tonight.
To Iowa State.
Let's go oh I would imagine.
One April 22nd in the nation.
And now Iowa State is ranked fourth.
It's going to beat them Of course, Iowa State lost to Wisconsin, lose rank below them.
So there's going to be a major shift here.
In the rankings with Iowa, of course, still on top.
Yes, they do have the best team and all the rest of them are scrambling after the second, third, fourth.
Here's the first point of the match.
This time a penalty as assessed against Tatum first, all right.
Very difficult for either man to go ahead and go.
The little guy doesn't want to go out and hit the big guy, take a chance to get hurt.
The big guy doesn't want to go on the road take is that's not his style.
The ball end of the period Darrell Peterson, Darrell Nichols, illustrious career coming to a close at Iowa State after this season and it looks as if his young team is making some progress Chuck.
Well, it helps to have Phil Kelly back in 126.
John Thorn wasn't there.
They're hoping to have Kelly a 118 by the end of the year.
And if they do, this is going to be a much stronger Iowa State team.
They've become very tough because two guys both.
On the line now, Tatum is out in the second period and has a 11 score.
Was a nice build up on.
His part where get a tripod build up.
When Peterson told him not to go get himself out of the room, he can't continue to back up like this all the time.
Now the penalty just.
Frustrating to Mark Tatum.
He doesn't want to stay in there, and that's kind of a spot.
Where I weigh 170.
I don't think I'd want a 270 pounder to push him to me.
You know, I probably wouldn't be able to stand there either and you know, anybody else out weigh £200.
But he does have to try to affect some kind of offense, you know, to win the match, he has to try to affect something like a.
Minute guard.
The second period, Peterson leads to the.
Line two penalty points.
There's a duck under a coach and that.
Was a nice attempt.
He got in underneath the arm.
But you see that mask that that large size coming down on him, almost buckled him over backward.
Now, there's an elbow up in the face as well as a head injury to us should bring Coach Nichols to his feet.
And it did.
But the opportunity that's there for Peterson from Iowa State, with all that pressure that Tatum put into it, this for him to snap him down instead of trying to push into to him once he gets his feet back and his head in would be to snap his head down toward your feet.
All right.
That would be effective.
I think Mark Tatum is getting the I say I think they say on the block sometimes letting the referee get into his head and he's worrying.
A little bit about what he thinks is unfairness against him.
And he's forgotten.
The rest of the little.
Bit.
Scores two to one here and there it is again.
He's a little frustrated this time.
It's two points for the one.
One more.
It's disqualification we might make this curry, but I don't know.
They'll make the last parade if the stays in this kind of position.
Okay.
That's period 40 108.
And Peterson will start on the ball gets.
It right.
There is our next one northern Iowa versus Drake on Tuesday the 5th of February at 9:00.
And here on Idaho the television of Peterson is out with.
Get five to one and we've seen his offense.
Basically it's just kind of push it off the shoulder and reach it under the rug but he will get him disqualified on that because he has the size of the case.
And law you can see the.
Frustration the of this kind of.
Calling Peterson.
I'd like to just go along with that because he's very good with that.
He gets all three of the three stops around the league out of bounds.
I'm sure.
Don't you suppose.
That if I were roughly downhill, I'd have at the back of my mind that one more is disqualified and I want to make it good.
It's got to be a disqualification.
That's going to be a sure thing.
I'm sure that's there.
That's a that's there.
Peterson's main to I'm going to make a good right.
But you're in a little bit of a position now that to affect the referee's judgment.
You can dictate a little Vatican's motion not to get himself in danger.
I see he has an opportunity right here.
He's got the arm locked and he has enough for him to pull him up tight, but he has to do something with it.
Oh, we have less than 30 seconds to go.
We'll go to much longer.
If it stays like this.
What if they needed it?
Yeah.
If they needed it, this would be something he called it.
He called disqualification with 10 seconds left to go.
They added six.
Points for the Iowa.
State team.
So it's a 28 to 13 victory.
For the Cyclones.
Disqualification is the same as a pin.
Well, it was a big night for the Cyclones tonight.
They went 28 to 13 after that heavyweight match and really it started early Chuck, because this one got away from Oklahoma rather quickly.
They got a win at the very first plate glass Gary over Higgins three nothing but then Kelley clash between two strong wrestlers beat Joe McCarthy six to three Joe Ceci got a quick technical fall over Gary Miller That was not really a terrible surprise.
Joe Gibbons What a major decision over a great singer.
But then at one 50 it could have been worse because Jackson was way ahead of Higgins, right?
That's right.
And it turned out to be a draw.
77 because Higgins got to a five point move at the end.
Then Dave Ewing beat Ken Fisher at £158, 12 to four on a major decision.
And then on the big surprise, perhaps I would say Solomon Carr beat John LaViolette 13 to six, 13 to seven, one 67 at one 77.
Melvin Douglas beat Bob Gassman 19 to five, but the horse was already gone.
You could didn't make a difference if you lock the barn door by then, Diane Schade beat John Acropolis ten to four and then Darrell Peterson wanted disqualification over Mark Tatum at heavyweight.
So the number four ranked Iowa State Cyclones defeat the number two ranked Oklahoma Sooners four to two.
And it looks to me as if the Cyclones are improving, Chuck.
I think that they're making drastic improvements here in this program.
It's just coming along real fine for them.
Well, once again, the final score is Iowa State 28 and Oklahoma 13.
A reminder, our next college wrestling meet will be a week from tonight, Tuesday, February 5th.
At 9:00 when northern Iowa takes on Drake.
That's next Tuesday at 9:00 p.m.. Hope you plan to watch.
