Hello film fans!
Welcome to my web comments on the 2020 film One Night in Miami.
My name is Cecelia, and I'm here to tell you a little bit more about this riveting story of black excellence.
Many of you may know the name Regina King, but I am betting that you didn't know she made her directorial debut with this historical dramatization.
King is probably most well known for the work that she did on the animated series The Boondocks, in which she voiced the characters Huey and Riley Freeman.
But she's been working in film and television since the 80s.
King began her acting career in 1985, playing the role of Brenda Jenkins on the sitcom 227.
227 follows the lives of people in a middle class apartment building.
227 Lexington Place in a black neighborhood in northeast Washington, D.C.. King went on to star in such films like Friday, Boyz in the Hood and Poetic Justice.
This feels relevant to mention because King's screenography demonstrates her devotion to telling black stories, and her work as an actor went on to inform her decision to choose One Night in Miami to make her directorial debut.
In leading roles, there is Kingsley Ben-Adir as Malcolm X, Eli Goree as Cassius Clay, Aldis Hodge as Jim Brown, and Leslie Odom Jr.
as Sam Cooke.
While watching the film, I wonder just how accurate the plot was to history.
With that in mind, I did a little digging.
In the film, the audience sees Malcolm X preparing to leave the Nation of Islam to found his own congregation.
In reality, Malcolm X was the public face of the organization for 12 years, advocating black empowerment and the separation of black and white Americans.
Malcolm X later went on to found Muslim Mosque Incorporated on March 12, 1964, four days after his departure from the Nation of Islam.
This is just one example of his of historical accuracy within One Night in Miami.
In 1962, Malcolm X met Cassius Clay and soon became Clay's spiritual and political mentor.
In the film, this is referenced directly through the choreographed prayer scene.
By the time of the first Liston fight in 1964, Malcolm X was visible in Clay's entourage.
The major plot point in the film is this boxing match, and while the prayer that was shown in the film may have been written for dramatic effect, it is historically accurate that Malcolm X was present at the Liston fight, in which Cassius Clay earned the title of the World Heavyweight Champion.
In winning this fight in 1964 at the age of 22.
Clay became the youngest boxer to take the title from a reigning champion in that same year.
Cassius Clay denounced his given name and took on the name Muhammad Ali.
It was on March 6th, 1964, that Clay was given the name by Elijah Muhammad, who we saw represented in the film.
Later in his life, Muhammad Ali cited his religious affiliation to denounce the Vietnam War and publicly identified as a conscientious objector, stating quote, “War is against the teachings of the Koran.” End quote.
Now this is not featured in the film, but it is one of the most well-known examples of Ali's activism.
Prior to watching One Night in Miami, I assumed it would be a retelling of the historical facts I already knew, and I was surprised to discover that the plot focused on discussion and the interpersonal relationship between the four activists.
Rather than rehashing what has already been said, Kemp Powers chose to feature a private conversation and the camaraderie that laid the foundation for some of the most monumental feats of activism at that time.
That's all I have for you this time.
But before I go, I must remind you that you are not helpless in the wake of societal changes.
Initiating important conversations is a small step that anyone can take to create the world that they want to live in.
Again, my name is Cecilia, and this concludes my web comments on One Night In Miami for Saturday Night Cinema on KSPS PBS.
Good night.
