Hi I'm Olivia, and today I' here with doctor Cynthia Rider.
Cynthia, can you tell us what you do and where we are?
I'm an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and my hometown of Jackson, Michigan.
So we pull teeth out for braces and we help exposed teeth that are hidden in the bone, or orthodontics.
People have lumps and bumps that shouldn't be in their mouth.
Or white spots or red spots o cancer lesions or pre cancers.
We take samples of that or take the whole thing out.
These are the basic instruments that you would use.
short needle a long needle or needles that we use inside of the mouth.
All of it comes in different widths and sometimes they have different styles.
You know, they can be quite sharp, but these are tools that will help go around the outside of the tooth and literally elevate just a little bit of a forc on the tooth to help loosen it.
How is STEM involved in your work?
Science.
science got me to where I am today.
To get into dental school.
You had to have a background in science.
And once you're in dental school, then you learn more about the engineerin and the different technologies.
One of the most prevalent, new technologies we use in here every day, and every patient.
The cone beam 3D scanner.
Now, that allows us to loo at different planes and angles to measure for surgery, measure for dental implants.
So, Olivia, our fanciest machine and technology in the office is our I-CAT.
It's a 3D scanner which scans a face, an oral cavity.
You saw on the screen already.
But let's show you how it's made.
So now their positions.
And this gives us our image.
And with the image, all that information, it's a 3D rendering.
It will put it back together and form the skull.
Oh that's cool.
Doctor Cynthia Rider gave me an implant of oral surgery knowledge.
