I'm your host, Leo D. Cook, and welcome to "Masterpieces of Children's Literature in Less Than a Minute."
Do you know what this is?
No, it's not a bed sheet, but close.
This is a type of clothing called a toga, which is what today's author Aesop would have worn in ancient Greece over 2,000 years ago.
Now, not a lot is known about Aesop, but there have been many fables that have been collected that bear his name.
Now, what is the difference between a fable and a tale?
A fable is a story that has animals, objects, or mythical creatures that talk.
And there is a moral at the ending.
A tail is this... [ Horse nickering ] So today, I present to you the famous fable from Aesop, the ant and the grasshopper.
♪ >> Spring, spring, spring.
Springity spring, spring.
Spring, spring, spring.
>> Hey, there.
Are you an uncle or an aunt?
[ Laughter ] >> I'm an ant, geez!
>> So what are you doing on this beautiful sunny spring day?
>> Working as usual.
What are you doing, pray tell, grasshopper?
>> You know me, just singing a song.
Hey, ant, why did the strawberry begin to cry?
Because he heard his mom was in a jam.
>> That's a good joke, but I have work to do!
>> Not me!
>> Springity spring, spring.
Spring, spring, spring.
Springity, spring, spring.
♪ >> Hey, you ant, what's up?
>> Just getting this pumpkin to my colony to store food for the winter.
By the way, how much food do you have stored away?
>> Me?
Nothing.
But I might get an order of nachos.
Care to share some with me?
If you buy, I'll fly, or even better, jump!
>> Thanks, but no thanks.
I don't have any extra money or time to eat nachos.
I have work to do!
>> No worries.
♪ >> Hey, grasshopper, how are you?
>> I'm tired, cold, and hungry.
And I'm tired of being cold and hungry.
What's in the mug?
>> Hot chocolate.
>> My favorite!
May I have some, please?
>> No, you may not.
Tough cookies.
>> I like cookies as well.
Do you have any to spare?
I'm starving!
>> You should have thought about this months ago!
>> Our poor friend the grasshopper.
I'm not going to tell you how this ends, but if you want to find out, I suggest you read "The Ant and The Grasshopper" by Aesop.

Today we're in Columbus, Indiana, and we're going to learn about taekwondo.
Come on, let's go!

So we're with Monse.
Monse is our taekwondo expert.
How does someone get involved with taekwondo?
Like, how did you get started?
>> My brothers started doing taekwondo, and I had to watch them every day.
So I got bored of that.
So I thought maybe I could join.
>> What kind of things do you do during practices?
>> We do, like, kicking.
>> Yeah?
>> Punching stances, things like that.
>> And how do you feel when you finish a workout?
>> Whenever we work hard, we're sweating.
>> How often are your classes?
>> Every day.
>> Every day?
>> Yeah.
>> It sounds like it takes a lot of discipline.
>> Yeah, it does.
>> One, two, three, four.
>> You have a lot of gear here.
Can you tell me what they are used for?
>> Our head gear is for your head.
So if they kick you in the head, it wouldn't hurt that much.
>> This is for your foot.
You have the arm pads for here.
This is for, like -- for your body.
It goes like this.
It goes like this, and they tie it on the back.
If they kick you here, it's not going to hurt.
>> Well, taekwondo sounds like a lot of fun, and I really want to try it out.
So how about I put on one of these uniforms, and we go out there, and you show me how to do some moves.
>> Yeah, sure.
>> Okay, let's go!
♪ >> Put your hands up.
>> If your hands fall down -- >> You're going to fall down.
>> You want to kick with this part.
Not this part.
>> Hey!
>> Wow!
>> Hey!
Oh.
That's tough, isn't it?

>> Monse, check this out.
This is so cool!
We broke boards.
You taught me how to do taekwondo.
What do we need to do to leave?
>> You need to bow.
>> All right.
How do we do it?
♪ >> I learned so much.
Kids at home, check in your area to see if you have a taekwondo studio, and maybe you can give it a try.
And remember, activity and play are a great way to get the recommended 60 minutes of activity per day.

[ Big sigh ] It's still a pandemic.

Percy would know what to do.
Wait.

Buckle up, organics.
Don't panic!

♪ Feeling rock cores in the crid-a-lick floors ♪ ♪ And the silly sample too, it's like a Rubik's Cube ♪ ♪ We can live out here on a jug of air ♪ ♪ Finally be an artificial brain ♪ ♪ who is thinking differently ♪ We'll be alien explorers and make some history ♪ ♪ The search for life is over ♪ Because NASA you've got Auggie ♪ ♪ This is not your story ♪ Hit the laboratory ♪ Help the people help themselves ♪ ♪ And science effect glory ♪ ♪ Go back home, and you'll see ♪ ♪ A world of possibilities for you and me ♪ ♪ Community ♪ Humanity >> They don't get it.
I don't know if people want to help each other.
>> Auggie, humanity isn't perfect, but we can make things better, and we have.
Just think about everything we've learned.
Civil Rights, fact checking, soap.
The coronavirus vaccine was created in record time because people all over the world communicated and collaborated and believed!
And that's the same thing that got perseverance and ingenuity to Mars.

It's like that, but instead of shoes, it's legs.

But with a body, you get to feel your emotions.

The sun has set.
The time has come for monsters and banshees, and all things that go bump in the night.
>> Oh.

>> Peggy?
What's wrong, Peggy girl?
>> Oh.
I'm scared, Zarg.
>> Peggy girl scared?
Don't be silly.
Peggy is scared of nothing.
>> Oh, Zarg.
I'm not as brave as all that.
>> That is not true.
Does Peggy not remember?
>> Remember what, Zarg?
>> When Peggy first moved in, Zarg was a grumpy, bitter, bad-tempered monster.
And Zarg did his sworn duty as a proud card-carrying member of STEALL.
>> STEALL?
>> Yes, the Shadow Terror Enforcement Agency of Logistic Liars.
>> Oh, I see.
>> It was Zarg's sworn duty to scare Peggy girl and create misery and woe, but what did Peggy do?
>> What did I do, Zarg?
>> Did Peggy fear Zarg?
Oh, no, Peggy fearlessly faced Zarg.
>> I have to admit, you were very scary.
But I put on a brave face.
>> Yes.
Peggy put on a brave face and then -- >> I read poetry.
>> No, no, no.
Well, yes, but, no, Peggy did something unimaginable.
>> Really?
>> Yes, Peggy girl child taught Zarg the value of friendship.
>> Oh, Zarg, that wasn't hard at all.
It's not hard to make new friends.
>> But Zarg is a monster.
>> Well, and a cute monster at that.
>> Cute?
Cute?
Zarg is not cute!
Do not offend Zarg's nastiness!
>> Oh, I'm sorry, Zarg.
I did not mean to offend your nastiness.
>> Zarg is very nasty.
>> Oh, the nastiest.
>> Peggy girl, let Zarg read a poem for Peggy.

>> It is called "Our Little Ghost" by Louisa May Alcott.
>> I'm listening, Zarg.
>> Oft in the silence of the night, when the lonely moon rides high, when wintry winds whistling, and we hear the owl's shrill cry, in the quiet, dusky chamber by the flickering firelight, rising up between two sleepers, comes a spirit all in white.

>> No, no, it isn't Harold.

Let's take a deep belly breath in, and check how are we feeling in this very moment.

♪ >> Today, we are going to swim in the ocean.
Okay.
So let's go our bellies down and our legs are long, and our arms are really long too.
And slowly just look at the beautiful ocean and the fish swimming in it, and they're going to swim in front of us.
Very slowly to start.
And you can go a little quicker.
Oh, that feels so good, isn't it?
It feels good.
Oh, no, I see a shark!
So we're going to bring our hands behind our backs, and we are going to clasp our hands, and our long arms, bring our arms up, and you are going to swing side to side.
And this is a big shark.
Can you bring your chest up and then look up?
Yeah, there you go.
Okay.
Let's go back to swimming.
Now you know you have to swim super fast.
Super fast.
Super fast.
Okay.
Lie down on your backs real quick.
Real quick, lie down on your backs.
And breathe in and out.
Put your hands on your belly.
We arrived on the beach.
We are safe!
Feel your belly going up when you breathe in, and down when we breathe out.
Feel the calming of the soft sand under you, and feel the warmth of the sun.
