Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipIt's amazing what you can find growing on a fencepost and I happened to find on this particular fence a teeny tiny fungus growing all in a row.
It's a rainy cool fall day.
And this particular fungus is called fan shaped jelly fungus.
It's only about a quarter inch tall, so it's really tiny and it grows on decomposing or dead wood.
In this case, a fencepost it is actually a separate fight.
A separate fight is a type of organism that grows and lives off of decomposing or decaying wood.
It doesn't have gills like a lot of mushrooms or fungi do the gills or those kind of louvers that hang down underneath the cap of a big mushroom.
And that's where the spores are normally held.
But in a fan shaped jelly fungus and all jelly fungi, the spores are shed directly from the stem or the little, in this case, fan shaped top of these little, little, teeny tiny mushrooms.
I even found looking very closely on the the log here or the part of the fencepost that there are some new little tiny ones that are coming up.
They don't have their little stocks and thin shape at the top yet, but they're really cute.
So again, this one is a crack specialist.
It typically comes out in from a crack in the wood or a crack in a log, and you can find it oftentimes in fall.
Mostly it's yellow, but sometimes it's this great orange color.
Remember, you can find your own outdoor elements when you visit area parks and natural areas.
We'll see you soon
