Goldenrod is not the cause of late summer allergies.
And that's because the pollen is too heavy to be wind borne.
The pollen of goldenrod can only be transported by pollinating insects.
So it's a boon to insects in August and September, when many of our other wildflowers have faded and insects need nectar and pollen to survive.
If you pinch one of the long, slender leaves, a really, really pointy and give it a little crush and sniff, it has kind of a nice spicy smell.
Another way you can identify Goldenrod even after it's done blooming, it often has these plume shaped flower heads.
But not every species is shaped this way.
They have some not so fancy names like tall goldenrod, an early goldenrod and late Goldenrod tells us a little bit about their growth and when they bloom.
And some are more flattop, too, like grass leaved goldenrod and flat top goldenrod.
Indiana has many, many species, some that grow in sunny areas that are dry like this and some that are specialized for woodlands and even wetlands.
But I think some of the prettiest sights you might find are a sunny field in late August, early September, full of goldenrod.
And if you look close, you'll probably be able to spot in the little flower heads, little tiny spiders, pollinating insects and once in a while a praying mantis.
So take a look next time you walk by a sunny goldenrod field.
Remember, you can find your own outdoor elements when you visit area parks and natural areas.
We'll see you soon.
