As October fades to November, I really relish the beautiful fall colors that we have in the southern Great Lakes region.
And reds in particular are some of my favorites.
Anthocyanin is the pigment that's responsible for giving us the red color, and it is created when the sugars concentrate in the leaves of our deciduous trees.
As our daily daylight diminishes and the green chlorophyl in leaves breaks down, the sugars help promote the production of anthocyanins.
So we get the best red colors when we have sunny days.
And then very cool, but not freezing nights.
And what's really interesting about this tree right here, that's at Saint Patrick's County Park in South Bend, is the sunny side of the tree.
The south side of the tree right now has more reds than the north side of the tree.
The south side gets a little bit more sun, and there's lots of trees in our region that gives us these wonderful red colors.
Some of my favorites.
Poison sumac, for example, gets a beautiful fall red coloration on its compound leaves, and sassafras, with its malty, lobed leaves, gets a nice orange and then kind of reddish tint to it, one that we don't see very often is tupelo or black gum, and it's known for its really vibrant scarlet leaves that are kind of oval in shape.
A couple others that I love.
Poison Ivy actually gets great red fall color, and of course its berries are wonderful for winter bird food.
As birds migrate south through our area, they often feed on poison ivy berries, and we also have a similar vine.
Virginia creeper Virginia creeper has five leaflets and it also will turn red and produce berries when it climbs up.
Trees that birds enjoy as well.
So be sure to look around while we can to enjoy the beautiful red colors.
In late October.
In the Great Lakes region.
Remember, you can find your own outdoor elements when you visit area parks and natural areas.
We'll see you soon.
