Fernwood is located in Niles, Michigan.
It's got beautiful trails along the Saint Joseph River.
And so here are some shots that I took along the hike.
I really enjoyed the stark contrast of trickling stream as it flowed to the much more calm, wide Saint Joseph River.
Redbud trees hang on to their seed pods throughout the winter.
Eventually they will fall off, but in the breeze they kind of jangled and moved about.
Kind of fun to watch.
And beech trees hold on to their leaves.
They exhibit a trait known as Marcescence that's when trees hold on to their leaves, especially young trees, through the winter, and then drop off when the new buds push through in the spring.
I think these beech leaves look a little bit like golden flags.
On the other hand, the cattails in the marsh looked like marshmallows on a stick to me.
Check out this rack held tightly by the upturned roots of a tree.
I wonder how much longer it's going to be there.
Likewise, the warty bark of hackberry is holding on to tiny pockets of snow.
Woodpeckers have been here chiseling away at this bark and making holes, perhaps for a spring nesting location.
It's quiet today, but somebody has been here hammering away.
And perhaps the most enjoyable was the bright green, almost like a spring green of watercress in the stream, reminding us that spring will be here sooner or later.
So remember, even in winter, you can find your own outdoor elements when you visit area parks and natural areas.
We'll see you soon.
