Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipSPEAKER: That's the Iditarod# at 28 minutes of age and we## had no idea what we were creating back then.
This is the sled that I took.
It's one of only## two sleds that survive from that first race.
It's like training for a marathon.
A marathon## runner has got to put the, put the miles# on to be ready for the race.
Also, lots## of particular training.
How to pass another# team, whether to go left, whether to go right,## whether to speed up, whether to slow down.
The first two are the only ones that ever## went all the way from Anchorage to Nome with# no interruption, skipping ahead to restart,## or anything like that.
They were over 1,100 miles# long by the route we took.
Today, the race is right at## about 1,000 miles.
Usually the,## the team takes its cue from the dogs up front.
You put your fastest dogs up front,## the hardest drivers, and, of course, the# ones that listen and will take commands.# You have to figure out where# each dog fits in the team.# Just like a football team, you've# got your, your linemen and your skill## position players and so forth.
They each have their place.# My original lead dog was named "Fat Albert" and he became a national celebrity when The## Wall Street Journal and its, uh, weekly# news magazine, The National Observer,## sponsored my team for the second race.
And, uh, they said at the end of 12 straight## weeks that the readership would not let it go.
There are two iconic, um, what you call them,## awards for people who have finished.# And so they're the belt buckle,## done by Richard Burmeister, and the patch.
And a lot of people that know they have## no prayer to win just say, "I'm just# going for the buckle and the patch.
"# Just a little group of us got together after the# first race and decided we needed to form a club.# So we did.
And as we're discussing things,# um, we decided we needed a, a club patch.# It features an image of myself coming# into Nome on the first Iditarod race.# And I thought, well, it should be big# to show the size of this undertaking,## and Alaska, and the trail.
And it should be elegant## to kind of show the prestige.
It is very exclusive, of course.# Only those who have finished the race can wear it.
Three weeks past my 30th birthday right here,## so I'm 80 right now.
Actually, I thought about## running the race this last year, the 50th# race, and I approached my friend Dan Seavey,# who's a couple of years older# than I, but in great shape.# And, and we talked about it, and we could have# done it but, uh, we decided finally not to.# I'm still at my age very competitive.
The race isn't the same today as it was then.# It's much more of a pure race.
Back then it was an expedition.# And I thought that Alaskan native musher from# the Yukon, Ken Chase, one of our trail mates,## said it best.
Said, "Rod, there were no# rookies on the first race.
We were explorers."
