In partner reading, paired students take turns reading aloud to each other.
For partner reading, more fluent readers can be paired with less fluent readers. The stronger reader reads a paragraph or page first, providing a model for the other. Then the less fluent reader reads the same text aloud. The stronger student provides feedback and encouragement. Two readers of equal ability can also practice partner reading by rereading after hearing the teacher read a passage.

At our house we read a lot together and use a strategy called partner reading.
My son, Patrick and my daughter, Carolyn, take turns reading aloud to each other.
- [Patrick] You have lots of books.
- Patrick is very outgoing and loves showing his sister how to read.
Patrick will read a page first allowing Carolyn to hear what fluent reading sounds like.
Carolyn is just starting to say words.
So while she can't completely repeat or read what Patrick said, she can say a word or two.
This is how reading starts.
- Go train.
Go.
- Can you say go?
- Go - Go train, go?
I encourage Patrick to give Carolyn positive feedback and help her with words.
Partner reading helps promote speed, accuracy and proper expression in reading.
But also helps both kids comprehend what they are reading.
It's a great activity they can do together while improving literacy.
