Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) (bright music) - My name is Julian Tomushunis.
I work at Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly.
My job title here is a CNA, certified nurse aid.
(bright music) Oh, we gonna go to the med room.
I was introduced by a friend, and growing up, I always wanted to be a nurse.
(bright music) - [Resident] Hello there.
- Hello, good morning, get my cart here.
And I came to Weatherly with a friend of mine, and she introduced me to Heritage Hill, and I came in as, I started as a PCA, personal care aide.
Then I went back to school and become a certified nurse aide.
(bright music) This is one of our courtyard where we take the resident outside to see the nice sunshine.
When it's beautiful out, we take them out here, we have a sit down, we either read a book with them, or we talk, we'll interact with them, getting to know them a little better.
Well, I used to visit the hospital and stuff with my mother-in-law and I said, "Wow, I'd like to get into that field."
Then I stock my cart with all my necessary things on it, like the flat sheet, the fitted sheet, bed pads, towels, washcloths.
I got that from the laundry room, and then I go through the resident rooms.
(bright music) A typical day for me here at Heritage Hill, you come in the mornings, prep yourself and get ready for the resident, go greet them, meet them in the mornings, wake them up, and get them ready for the day.
(knocking on door) (bright music) Hi Mary, good morning.
(bright music) Throughout the day, I will give a resident a shower.
You had your shower this morning, huh, how was that?
- That was fine.
- Nice.
- That was fine.
- Or we take them to breakfast or lunch or dinner.
But you ready for breakfast, are you hungry?
- [Resident] I'm always hungry.
- You're always hungry, (chuckles) and then we'll put them in bed if they need a nap, or we take them to activities.
All right, ready?
Okay, legs up, okay, good girl.
Throughout the day, they have so many different tasks they could go and attend to, like, some people like to play bingo, some like to play card games, you know, we talk fun stuff, and things like that.
(bright music) I shared a lot of memories with a lot of people in here.
I get to meet all different kind of people from all different walks of life.
How about your favorite sweater?
Look it, I found it.
- My favorite sweater.
- And it's beautiful to learn their culture, and it's one of the most wonderful memories I have to meet all of these different people from different countries too.
Always put a smile on my face.
You make me wanna come to work every day.
My advice to give to someone who wants to be in this field, go for your goal.
If you wanna be a nurse or a personal care aide or a CNA, you go for your goal.
You have to go room to room, all over the place.
It's something different all the time.
You never know what you're gonna get into, or you never know where you're gonna be.
The thing is, you just have to stay focused, and just do whatever you're told, and if we don't understand it.
It's a field that is, it takes a lot too, because you become a people person, and dealing with the public as well.
Okay, 1, 2, 3, hang on to the bar.
Take your time, turn around.
Turn your legs right around.
You learn how to take care of your mom, your dad, your sisters, your brothers, so this is one of the best job you could ever want to pursue a career in.
Whose voice is that?
- [Resident] Julian.
- All right.
(laughs) (bright music) When she hears my voice down the hallway, she'll be like, "Julian is here."
I love my job every day, all day.
I dream, sleep, I eat my job.
(laughs) (bright music)
