THE OPENING SHOW, I CREATED A, WHAT I CALL A SIGNATURE QUILT.
IT'S COAST-TO-COAST QUILTING, FULL OF SEASHELLS AND WAVES.
WE HAVE SOME WONDERFUL NEW PLASTIC TEMPLATES THAT ALLOW EASY TRANSFER TO JACKETS ALSO.
THIS IS THE JACKET I MADE.
HERE'S THE CONCH SHELL DESIGN.
REMEMBER WHEN YOU'RE WORKING WITH METALLIC THREAD, TO USE THAT METAFIL NEEDLE.
MAKES IT VERY EASY TO SEW, ESPECIALLY SO YOU CAN SEE YOUR WORK ON THE BACKSIDE.
HERE I'VE USED SOME OF THAT BATIK HAND-DYED FABRIC.
SO, SEASHELLS GO ALL THE WAY AROUND THE BACK OF THIS JACKET, AND I HAVE A NICE SIDE EASE OPENING HERE.
THE QUILT ITSELF IS MADE WITH WHAT I CALL THOSE SECRET STITCHES, IN THAT YOU QUILT ONE BLOCK AT A TIME, AND ONCE THEY'RE DONE, YOU SIMPLY MACHINE STITCH THIS TOGETHER, AND THEN THE OUTSIDE BORDER CREATES THE SASHING.
AND I THINK THAT OFFERS A LOT OF POSSIBILITIES FOR QUILTS TODAY.
FOR INSTANCE, HERE'S A CHRISTMAS BLOCK THAT STARTED.
JUST CONTINUE MAKING THESE AFTER THEY'RE QUILTED.
YOU WOULD THEN STITCH INSIDE, AND THEN SCALLOPS WOULD BE APPLIQUED IN PLACE, AND YOU'D HAVE AN ENTIRELY NEW DESIGN.
ON SHOW 1002, WE WENT MODERN.
WE DID A BLOCK CALLED THE TANGRAM BLOCK, AND MADE A TANGRAM QUILT.
NOW, I DID NOT SHARE WITH YOU ON THAT SHOW THE TEMPLATES.
THEY'RE VERY EASY TO MAKE TODAY.
WHILE YOU CAN DESIGN YOUR OWN, I TOOK THIS SAME MOTIF AND DROPPED IT INTO SQUARES, AND RECTANGLES, AND TRIANGLES.
AND THIS PARTICULAR VEST, WHERE I'VE TAKEN THAT SAME TANGRAM SQUARE, PUT THEM BLOCK TO BLOCK IN A REDUCED SIZE, I THINK YOU SEE THE EXPLOSION OF COLOR.
HERE'S THE LARGER BLOCK, AND LOOK AT THE FUN THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING.
THE TEMPLATES WORK WELL IN CARDBOARD, BUT THEY ALSO ARE NICE JUST TRANSFERRED ON TO CONTACT PAPER.
PULL OFF THE PAPER, AND THESE BECOME THE DESIGNS TO STITCH AROUND IN THE MACHINE.
SHOW 1003 FEATURED A MORE TRADITIONAL PATTERN.
WE CALL THIS PASTEL PEACEFUL PLEASURES.
IT WAS BASED ON AN ELONGATED HEXAGON, AND I WOULD SUGGEST MAKING A WINDOW TEMPLATE.
IT'S A GREAT WAY TO CHECK YOUR SEAM ALLOWANCES AND YOUR RIGHT ANGLES.
NOW, IN MAKING THIS VEST, I HAD A HARD TIME COMING UP WITH A DESIGN UNTIL I DISCOVERED A GROUP OF OLD BLOCKS THAT I HAD.
WELL, THEY ARE MORE OF THE ELONGATED HEXAGONS, BUT THIS TIME, LOOK WHAT HAPPENS.
THAT HALF SQUARE TRIANGLE IS TURNED ON POINT RATHER THAN A RIGHT ANGLE.
THESE WERE PROBABLY GONNA END UP IN A STORM AT SEA QUILT.
WELL, I TOOK THESE BLOCKS, THEY BECAME LAPELS AND COLLARS FOR THE VEST.
THAT'S WHY EVEN ONE OF THEM STITCHED AROUND ON THREE SIDES.
WELL, LET'S SEE, ONE, TWO, THREE, AND AN OPENING, TURNED INSIDE OUT, BECAME THE POCKET.
THEY MADE NICE COLLARS ON THE BACK, AND I SIMPLY LINED THE POINTS WITH MUSLIN.
HAD A LITTLE PROBLEM AT THE SHOULDER HERE WHERE THE PATCHWORK DIDN'T MEET, SO I JUST MADE AN EPAULETTE TO GO RIGHT HERE.
NEXT, WE WENT DOWN ON THE FARM.
YOU REMEMBER THAT JERSEY COW QUILT.
WELL, TOOK THAT JERSEY COW, STITCHED HIM WITH A LOT OF THREAD SKETCHING, AND HE BECOMES THE BUTTON CLOSURE ON THE FRONT OF THIS VEST.
WITH SKETCHES FROM A CHILD'S COLORING BOOK, I SIMPLY TRANSFERRED THOSE TO MY BLUE SKY AND HAD A LOT OF FUN THREAD SKETCHING.
THAT'S DROPPING THE FEED DOGS USING BLACK THREAD WITH THAT LITTLE TINY ZIGZAG, AND LOOK AT THE FUN LINING I'VE GOT FROM MY DOWN-ON-THE-FARM VEST.
THIS WAS SHOW 1004.
SHOW 1005 FEATURED HEART-TO-HEART, HAND-IN-HAND DESIGNS.
I'VE ADAPTED THOSE INTO LITTLE FOLKS' VESTS.
AFTER ALL, WITH PICTURES INSIDE THE HEARTS, GRANDCHILDREN DO NOT FORGET GRANDPARENTS.
I WANTED TO POINT OUT SOMETHING SPECIAL ABOUT THIS TRAVELING ENSEMBLE THAT IS GOING AROUND THE COUNTRY WITH FAIRFIELD PROCESSING.
THE DESIGN ON BOTH JACKETS ARE PUT TOGETHER WITH SOME NOVELTY BRAID THAT, AFTER SCRUTINIZING, I DO BELIEVE ARE THE SAME THINGS THAT YOU USE TO PUT ON THE BACK OF BRIDAL DRESSES BECAUSE THIS ELASTIC BECOMES THE BUTTONHOLE.
BUT IT'S WONDERFUL SEWN ON THESE INDIVIDUAL SEGMENTS BECAUSE GROSGRAIN RIBBON CAN SIMPLY BE WOUND INSIDE TO MAKE ALL THE CONNECTIONS OF ALL THE PARTS.
NOW, SHOW 1006, WE WENT ALL THE WAY TO ILLINOIS AND FOUND THESE WONDERFUL BATIK KITTY CATS.
AND I PUT THESE INTO A VEST, AND ONCE I STARTED QUILTING IT, I DECIDED TO USE THAT IDEA FROM LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY.
AND WHAT I LIKE IS THAT MY MACHINE HAS A BUILT-IN REVERSE BUTTONHOLE STITCH.
I SIMPLY GO TO MY PATCHWORK DESIGN, AND ONCE I BRING THAT UP ON MY TOUCH-TONE SCREEN, I GO TO 329, AND I LIKE A LITTLE WIDER STITCH AND A LITTLE BIT LONGER.
AND THEN I'M GONNA SHOW YOU HOW NICE THIS IS.
I'VE PUT MY WALKING FOOT ON BECAUSE I AM QUILTING, AND I'VE GOT THAT OPEN TOE ON, WHICH GIVES A LOT OF VISIBILITY.
BUT WHAT I REALLY LIKE IS, IS I'M GOING FROM SIDE TO SIDE AND GET TO THAT CORNER, IF I TAKE THE TIME TO LET MY NEEDLE END ON THE OUTSIDE, AND THEN WHEN I TURN, IT FORMS A PERFECT RIGHT-ANGLE CORNER.
SO I NEVER HAVE ANY MESSY CORNERS AGAIN.
ENOUGH VESTS FOR A WHILE.
LET'S HAVE AN INTERVIEW WITH DOTTIE MOORE.
MEET DOTTIE MOORE FROM ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA.
WHEN I FIRST MET DOTTIE, SHE WAS THE INITIATOR OF MACHINE QUILTING AND IN SOME VERY UNIQUE ART QUILTS.
DOTTIE, TELL US ABOUT YOUR EARLY BEGINNINGS AND HOW YOU HAVE PROGRESSED IN THE QUILT WORLD.
- WELL, NOW WE'RE GOING BACK A LONG WAY.
THIS WAS BACK IN 1980 WHEN I DID MY FIRST QUILT, AND I THINK YOU AND I MET MAYBE A YEAR OR SO AFTER THAT.
I WAS A WEAVER BEFORE I WAS QUILTING, AND I THINK I WAS IN LOVE WITH THE COLOR AND TEXTURE OF WEAVING, AND I BROUGHT THAT INTO MY CREATIONS AS A QUILTER, BUT YOU'LL ALSO REMEMBER I DIDN'T CALL MYSELF A QUILTER.
IT WAS LIKE QUILTING IS NOT WHAT I DO.
QUILTING IS SOMETHING ELSE, BUT I WAS USING THE SKILLS THAT I HAD.
I WAS USING THE SEWING MACHINE, WHICH I'D USED SINCE I WAS VERY YOUNG.
I WAS INTERPRETING MY SCENES OF NATURE THAT I LOVED SO MUCH.
OUTSIDE, I WAS LIVING ON A 115-ACRE FARM IN GREENVILLE, TENNESSEE, OVERLOOKING THE CHEROKEE NATIONAL FOREST AND WALKING ALONG THE TRAILS AND CLIMBING THE MOUNTAINS.
ALL OF THIS WENT INTO MY WORK, AND I JUST WANTED TO EXPRESS IT, AND FABRIC HAD BEEN AN IMPORTANT PART OF MY PAST.
- BUT YOU THINK OF YOURSELF AS A QUILTER TODAY, RIGHT?
- IT TOOK ME A FEW YEARS TO CALL MYSELF A QUILTER, AND IT TOOK A FEW MORE YEARS TO USE THE "A" WORD, THAT ART QUILT.
BUT YES, VERY DEFINITELY.
AND WE ARE ALL ARTISTS, BUT IT TAKES US A LONG TIME SOMETIMES TO CLAIM THAT FOR OURSELVES.
- YOU'VE GONE ON TO A MOST UNIQUE PROJECT, "PIECING A LIFETIME TOGETHER."
TELL US ABOUT IT.
- WE'RE SO EXCITED ABOUT IT.
THE PROJECT IS CALLED "PIECING A QUILT OF LIFE," AND IT BEGAN IN 1996 WHEN I DECIDED THAT IT WAS TIME FOR ME TO MEET SOME QUILTERS.
I HAD BEEN MAKING MY QUILTS AND TAKING THEM TO ART SHOWS.
AND SO MY SUPPORT GROUP WERE POTTERS AND SCULPTORS AND JEWELRY MAKERS, AND I DIDN'T KNOW MANY QUILTERS.
I HAD AN INVITATION TO TEACH IN ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO, SO I DECIDED TO EXTEND MY VISIT IN THE SOUTHWEST AND INVITE QUILT GALS TO CONNECT ME WITH WOMEN QUILT ARTISTS OVER THE AGE OF 50.
SO THAT WAS A LITTLE OVER TWO YEARS AGO.
I HAVE NOW COLLECTED OVER 100 STORIES.
I'M GATHERING STORIES LIKE I GATHER FABRIC FOR QUILTS.
AND IT'S NOT JUST ONE PROJECT, IT'S MANY.
WE HAVE PRODUCED A NEWSLETTER THAT WE PUT OUT TWICE A YEAR CALLED "CREATIVE TRACES" THAT TELLS STORIES OF WOMEN QUILT ARTIST STORIES, BUT ALSO OTHER CREATIVE PEOPLE AND THEIR CREATIVE PROCESS STORIES.
AND WE HAVE A WEBSITE.
I'M WRITING A BOOK.
SO IT'S LIKE A STASH OF FABRIC.
IT IS A COLLECTION OF CREATIVE MATERIAL THAT WILL BE ONGOING.
THERE WON'T BE A COMPLETION TO THIS PROJECT.
IT WILL JUST BE ONGOING, LETTING IT HAVE A LIFE OF ITS OWN LIKE OUR QUILTS HAVE THEIR OWN LIVES.
- ABOUT THESE WOMEN, GIVE US AN OVERVIEW OF A FEW OF THESE.
I THINK THAT'S MOST INTRIGUING.
- 18 YEARS AGO, I WAS VERY NAIVE AND I THOUGHT THAT I WAS MAKING THE QUILTS.
NOW I KNOW THE QUILTS HAVE BEEN MAKING ME ALL OF THESE YEARS.
AND I WANTED TO KNOW IF SOME OF THE WOMEN HAD HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE THAT I HAD HAD, THAT THE PROCESS OF CREATION IS TRANSFORMATIONAL.
AND SO IT BEGAN IN THE SOUTH, IN ALBUQUERQUE AND LOS ALAMOS.
AND ONE OF THE QUILTERS IN LOS ALAMOS IS FRAN ROGERS.
AND FRAN WAS IN HER 50S WHEN SHE BEGAN QUILTING.
SHE HAD JUST HAD A SERIOUS BOUT WITH CANCER AND FOUND HER CREATIVITY THROUGH THAT ILLNESS.
AND IT LED HER TO QUILTING.
AND NOW SHE'S AN AVID QUILTER AND ALL ORIGINAL WORK, ALL HER OWN EXPRESSION.
AND SO SHE'S ONE OF THE QUILTERS.
AND THEN I TRAVELED FROM ALBUQUERQUE OVER TO SANTA FE AND THERE WAS ANN PERKOVICH.
I LOVE VISITING ANN BECAUSE SHE LIVES SURROUNDED BY DESERT.
AND YET WHEN YOU LOOK AT HER QUILTS, THEY ARE FULL OF COLOR AND LIFE.
AND THE CONTRAST BETWEEN HER INNER WORLD AND HER OUTER WORLD, I THOUGHT WAS JUST INCREDIBLE.
- ANOTHER SOUTHWEST QUILTER, DOTTY.
- WELL, THAT WOULD HAVE TO BE CORRINE VANDERPLUG-NICHOLS.
THE DAY THAT I ARRIVED AT HER PLACE IN SANTA FE, SHE HAD JUST RESIGNED HER JOB AND WAS WANTING TO TAKE A LEAP INTO FULL-TIME QUILTING.
AND I TALKED TO HER JUST ABOUT A MONTH AGO AND SHE HAS DONE THAT AND EVERYTHING IS GOING VERY SMOOTHLY FOR HER.
SO THAT'S EXCITING TO SEE THAT QUILTING TAKES US INTO NEW LIVES.
ANOTHER ONE THAT I STAYED WITH FOR FIVE DAYS WAS CHRISTA MANNING WHO GREW UP IN GERMANY AND HAD TO ESCAPE TO AUSTRIA DURING THE WAR.
HAS QUITE A DRAMATIC STORY.
DISCOVERED QUILTING AT THE SMITHSONIAN, LIKE SO MANY PEOPLE I'M SURE HAVE.
WAS DOING EXPERT TRADITIONAL QUILTS BECAUSE SHE IS A MASTER SEAMSTRESS FROM AUSTRIA.
BUT WANTING TO DO HER OWN ORIGINAL DESIGNS.
AND AFTER I LEFT, SHE STARTED SENDING ME PHOTOGRAPHS OF THESE BEAUTIFUL NEW QUILTS WHERE SHE'S BRINGING HER PERSONAL EXPRESSION INTO THE WORLD.
IT'S EXCITING TO SEE PEOPLE TAKE THAT LEAP.
- DID YOU ALWAYS STAY IN THE SOUTHWEST OR WHERE ELSE?
- THE FIRST TRIP I TRAVELED TWO MONTHS ALONE, CAMPING, SLEEPING UNDER THE STARS AND STAYING WITH WOMEN QUILT ARTISTS THAT I HAD NEVER MET BEFORE.
SO IT WAS INCREDIBLE TWO MONTHS.
BUT FROM THAT TWO-MONTH JOURNEY IN NEW MEXICO, ARIZONA, COLORADO AND UTAH, I HAVE EXPANDED TO NATIONWIDE COLLECTING STORIES FROM CALIFORNIA TO MARYLAND TO THE SOUTHEAST, OVER A HUNDRED STORIES.
- OH MY, WELL TELL ME ANOTHER ONE.
- OH, MARLENE O'BRIEN SEABROOK IS A WONDERFUL QUILTER WHO BEGAN ALSO ONLY A FEW YEARS AGO.
SHE WAS ONLY GOING TO DO ONE QUILT.
IT WAS SOMETHING THAT SHE WANTED TO DO FOR HER HUSBAND.
AND LIKE THE REST OF US, THAT WAS ALL IT TOOK.
SHE IS A RETIRED EDUCATOR AND ALL OF HER QUILTS TELL STORIES.
AND MARLENE IS A WONDERFUL EDUCATOR THROUGH HER QUILTS AND THROUGH HER WORDS.
SHE LIVES IN CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
- WE'VE ENJOYED SEEING NORMA BRADLEY'S WORK AS SHE WORKS THROUGH THE SCHOOL SYSTEM, INSTITUTING GEOMETRIC DESIGNS OUTSIDE.

- WHAT ABOUT OUR YOUNG ADULTS TODAY?
HOW ARE WE GOING TO INSTILL ALL OF WHAT WE LOVE AND DO TO THEM?
HOW IS THAT GOING TO HAPPEN?
DO YOU SEE A-- - I THINK IT'S VERY IMPORTANT.
THE STORIES THAT I'M COLLECTING, I NOW REALIZE, YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU BEGIN A PROJECT, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'RE ACTUALLY DOING.
I NOW REALIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF GIVING THESE STORIES BACK.
I SEE THESE WOMEN AS MENTORS AND I SEE OUR SOCIETY IS STARVING FOR MORE IMAGINATIVE WAYS TO LIVE.
WE HAVE BEEN DICTATED TO BY TELEVISION AND SOCIETY OF HOW-TO'S AND SHOULD'S AND OUGHT'S AND I THINK WE'RE NEEDING MENTORS FOR OUR IMAGINATION AND WHAT BETTER IMAGINED MENTORS DO WE HAVE THAN QUILT ARTISTS AND WOMEN, WOMEN WHO HAVE JUGGLED SO MANY THINGS AND BEEN CREATIVE ALL THEIR LIVES.
- THE WORD QUICK BOTHERS ME SOMETIMES.
I THINK THAT IF ANYTHING IN QUILT MAKING, WE LEARN THAT SOMETHING OF VALUE TAKES TIME TO CREATE AND THAT THAT PROCESS IS PART OF THE FUN AND JUST DON'T BE IN SUCH A HURRY TO GET IT OVER WITH.
DOTTIE, WE LOOK FORWARD TO VISITING WITH YOU AGAIN AND GETTING AN UPDATE ON THE PROJECT.
