Another great day in the neighborhood, and skateboarding is one of my favorite things to do.

I love living so close to my school and that I can skate there.

I just have to make sure that I follow all the safety rules.

There's a stop sign.

When we're at a stop sign, we need to stop, look both ways, and make sure it's clear to cross.

(engine rumbling) Car.

Truck.

(engine rumbling) Motorcycle.

(engine rumbling) Bus.

(horn honking) Okay, the coast is clear to cross now.

Let's go!

(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) (microphone feedback) - Hello?

Is this thing on?

(microphone feedback) Hi, everyone.

It's Barbara the Substitute Bell.

I'm filling in for Barry.

He's my bellfriend!

Anyway, Barry went to visit his family over the holidays.

But on his return trip back home, there was a big snowstorm, and his flight was delayed.

So last I heard, he was stuck in the airport.

He rang me on the phone this morning and asked for my help, so I hopped on the first bus to get here.

Anyway, you're probably wondering where you need to go next.

Just walk.

Don't run.

I mean it!

Don't run to Miss Stephanie's classroom for a very moving story!

(bell ringing) (playful horn honking) ♪ The wheels on the bus go round and round ♪ ♪ Round and round, round and round ♪ ♪ The wheels on the bus go round and round ♪ ♪ All through the town!

♪ Oh, hi!

I'm Miss Stephanie, and I am so happy that you are here!

How did you get here?

I drove my car to get to school today.

Sometimes when I want some exercise, I'll ride a bike.

(bike bell rings) But one time my bike got a flat, so I had to call a taxi.

(horn honking) There are so many ways to get to different places.

It's called transportation.

Transportation is a big word that means how we get from one place to another place.

And, today's story is all about going places and how we get there.

It's called "On the Go," and it's written by Nancy Noel Williams, with illustrations by Deborah Tudtud.

(reading) "When I was quite little, "Mom took me outside.

"I sat in my stroller to go for a ride.

"That was the start, if you have to know.

(paper rustling) "I could not stop, "I wanted to go!

(paper rustling) "I'd ride in the wagon "and roll down the street.

"Faster and faster.

"Wow!

What a treat!

"I rode on three wheels.

"I loved my red trike.

(paper rustling) "In no time, "I rode just two wheels on a bike.

(paper rustling) "I tried out a scooter, "just for a thrill.

(paper rustling) "I worked on my balance for this brand new skill.

(paper rustling) "I soon rode a skateboard all around town.

"I did tricks!

"I did flips!

"I flew upside down!

"When I turned 16, I drove a red car.

"I learned to be safe when I drove near or far.

"I drove a big truck (engine rumbling) "when I had work to do.

"I would load it quite full.

"I would empty it too.

(paper rustling) "Driving a boat was like "flying through air.

"I could speed through the waves with the wind in my hair.

(paper rustling) "And steering a cruise ship?

"That's so much fun!

"I loved riding the waves in the sky and the sun.

(paper rustling) "But driving a space shuttle?

"That can't be beat.

"I love seeing Earth from my own window seat.

(paper rustling) "It's time to slow down.

"I just need my feet.

(soft footsteps) I'll go for a walk on my very own street."

Wow!

The boy in the story rode so many different types of transportation.

He started in a stroller, and then a wagon.

He rode a bike, and then a scooter.

He also rode a skateboard just like Eddie!

Then when he got older, he drove a car, a truck, and even a boat.

And then, the space shuttle?

Wow!

Can you imagine traveling through space?

How cool!

(bell ringing) Oh, there's Barbara the Substitute Bell!

I like it when she visits our school.

Where are we off to next, Barbara?

(playful horn honking) (bell rings) (microphone feedback) - [Barbara] Hello?

Is this thing on?

Can you hear me?

(microphone feedback) I wonder where Barry is.

I haven't heard from him in a while.

I think I'll give him a ring.

(phone ringing) - [Barry] Barry the Bell here.

You rang?

- Hello?

Hello!

Barry?

Can you hear me?

- [Barry] Barbara!

Hi!

I can hear you.

Wow, it sure is good to hear your voice!

- Oh, Barry, it's good to hear your voice too.

When are you coming back to school?

- [Barry] Well?

Soon, I hope.

- Where are you?

Why does it sound so loud?

- I'm on a bus!

My flight was canceled and I didn't wanna wait in the airport any longer.

I want to get home because we're supposed to see each other tonight, and I'm really looking forward to it.

- Oh, Barry, you're the best bellfriend a bell like me could ask for!

- Oh, Barbara, you're making me blush.

(chuckles) I should probably go.

Everyone on the bus is looking at me right now.

- Okay, bye.

(click!)

I feel like I'm floating on cloud nine.

Oh!

Speaking of floating, Why don't you head over to the craft room with Miss Stephanie for a gravity-defying activity?

(bell rings) (playful horn honking) - The Wright brothers may have flown the first airplane, but today we're gonna make a paper airplane!

One, two, three, go!

Making them is super easy!

All you need is a piece of paper!

The first thing you're gonna do is you're gonna fold the paper in half vertically.

This means up and down the long way.

Once you do that, you're gonna have a center line.

You're gonna use that center line and make one fold into the center line, then another fold just a little way down to that center line.

Then you're going to do a second fold into the center line.

Here we go.

Center line.

Once you have that, you're gonna use your center line again to fold the whole thing together in the middle.

Once you've done that, we're gonna finish the wings by making a flap.

The flap's gonna give us a place to hold onto that plane so that it will sail into the sky.

Make sure that you have a nice point to lock it into place.

Here we go!

(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) (microphone feedback) - [Barbara] Hello!

Hello?

You'd think I'd get the hang of this thing by now.

Can you hear me?

Good.

Before I tell you to go to Miss Stephanie's classroom again, I wanna see how my bellfriend is doing.

He's been on quite a long journey, so I'm just gonna check in with him.

(phone ringing) Hello?

Barry?

- [Barry] Oh!

Hi, Barbara!

- Are you okay?

- [Barry] Woo-hoo!

I'm having the time of my life!

- What are you doing?

- I'm riding on the back of a motorcycle!

(Barry laughs) Don't ask me how I got here.

It's too long of a story.

But the good news is, I'm almost there to the school!

- So, that means we can go on our date tonight?

- That's exactly what that means.

I wouldn't miss it for the world!

- Ohh!

You say the nicest things, Barry!

Okay.

Well?

I better freshen up, so I am bell-utiful for you when you arrive.

(click!)

Okay.

While I get ready, you go to Miss Stephanie's classroom to see how far we've come today.

(bell rings) (playful horn honking) - Transportation is how we move around.

It could be by bike, by plane, by boat, by car, or even a horse!

We learned so many things about transportation today.

First, we read a story about some of the different types of transportation we use.

(reading) "I rode on three wheels.

"I loved my red trike.

"In no time, I rode just two wheels on a bike.

"I soon rode a skateboard, all around town.

"When I turned 16, I drove a red car.

"I drove a big truck when I had work to do.

"Driving a boat was like flying through air.

"Steering a cruise ship?

"That's so much fun!

And, what about Barry?

He traveled on all sorts of vehicles today.

- I'm on a bus, the train, (toot-toot!)

a motorcycle!

(Barry laughs) - And, we also had some fun making and flying a paper airplane.

(engine rumbling) Bus, motorcycle, truck, car.

Okay, the coast is clear.

Let's go home!

De todos modos, Barry fue a visitar a su familia durante las vacaciones.

Transporte es una palabra muy importante que significa "la forma en que llegamos- "o nos movemos, de un lugar a otro."

Y de eso se trata el libro de hoy.

(leyendo un libro) "Cuando era bien pequeño, "mamá salía afuera conmigo.

"Me sentaba en mi cochecito para salir a pasear.

"Paseaba en el carrito cuesta abajo por la calle.

"Más rápido y más rápido.

¡Vaya!

¡Qué gusto!

¡Wow!

El niño en ese cuento viajó en muchos medios de transporte.

Comenzó en un cochecito y luego por carreta, una bicicleta, un scooter, y una patineta- al igual que Eddie.

Luego, cuando tuvo edad suficiente, pudo manejar un coche, en un camión, e incluso- ¡un barco!...

¡Y, hasta el transbordador espacial!

¡Vaya, que padre!

(sonido de campana) Oh, allí está la campana sustituta Bárbara, dirigirnos a nuestra próxima actividad.

A mí me encanta cuando ella visita nuestra escuela.

Probablemente debería colgar; todos en el autobús me están mirando.

- [Bárbara] De acuerdo.

(el papel cruje) Y, vamos a hacer las alas.
