So my husband Fred was in the Navy in Newport, Rhode Island, and he was getting out of the Navy, and we wanted to find a place to live permanently.
So we made a list and we said, this is what we want in a town.
And on the list was it needed to be rural, not in a city.
And we liked to hike, so it needed to be in the mountains.
We had two very young boys, so we wanted good schools.
Then we thought, you know what?
If it's rural, maybe it'd be good if it had a college as we were driving up to Waterville Valley, the snow was falling and it was as if we were in a movie.
Just picture, picture perfect.
And people were just so nice and welcoming.
I mean, it was it was just amazing.
And and it just, it clicked for us.
So that summer we moved up here and we're walking down Main Street I'm with the two boys and all these people are saying hello that I really didn't know, but they knew that there were new people in town.
They knew who we were before we knew anyone.
And Anton, who was five at the time, he said to me, how do you know so many people?
And I didn't really know all those people, but they knew us.
And so what it did for me was made me realize.
What was missing on the list?
The caring in the community.
wherever you go, people know your name, you know, so I can go downtown, and I know people in the different shops, and I can go to, you know, M&M scoops, and I can go to Hannaford and it is just a real sense of community.
