Growing up sheltered and attending a private school, Dayton's view of the world was limited. Once in college during the Civil Rights Movement and seeing his hero, Robert Kennedy, assassinated, Dayton saw the stark differences of his privileged upbringing and the people around him. It became more apparent when he taught at a school in New York City.
