Young readers can use many reading materials to build their literacy skills.
When we think of reading, most of us think of books, but there are many other types of reading materials that children can use to practice their developing literacy skills. Sheet music, magazines, comics, manuals, recipes and more can be great tools for learning new vocabulary.

When we think of reading, most of us think books, but there are many other types of reading materials that children can use to practice their developing reading skills.
As a violin teacher, I know that even sheet music can offer reading opportunities.
You can read the composer, the title of the piece, arranger, tempo markings, as well as other musical notation.
Another example, magazines.
There are lots of great options for kids available for digital download or at the store.
This is in Spanish, (speaks Spanish).
Other ideas include comics, a great way to teach your children about the back and forth of dialogue.
Real life reading is powerful.
For example, when cooking from a recipe, we take turns reading ingredients and instructions.
And don't forget books your kids write.
Nothing is more powerful than reading their own writing.
