What is a robot?
- A robot is something that can do chores for you around the house, like a dishwasher or a vacuum.
And what does your robot do?
- Our robots completes missions by pushing, (gentle music) pulling, lifting, (gentle music) and dropping.
(gentle music) - These pieces make robot- - Like this.
(gentle music) - We use connectors to connect the different parts together.
(gentle music) - The frame allows us to parts to the robot.
(gentle music) - The gears allow us to raise and lower the arms.
(gentle music) - The wheels allow us to move the robot (gentle music) - Code, tells the robot what to do like move the arms, go forward and go backwards.
We create code using this, the computer.
- We transfer the code from the computer to the brain, which is this.

But you would like actually for real like, program and make robots think and do and figure out, right?
- Mm hmm.
- Okay.
So we saw some examples.
What are some highlights of things that your team has accomplished when programming robots?
- Well, with our robot we completed a lot of missions on our field.
And by completing the missions we got an award called the Championship Award.
And that means we did overall really amazing.
And that got us to the next competition.
- That's so exciting.
And so you said like a mission, like you gotta like go over the river through the woods like drop of balls, that kind of stuff, right?
- Yeah, we pushed a truck onto a bridge, and we pushed a plane.
Yeah, there was a lot of things we did.
- Man, so how did you first get interested in start at learning how to do this?
- My mom and dad started this team and so my brother started doing it.
And with that, I ended up just doing it and because it was fun.
- Oh yeah, totally.
I love it.
And so now it's a team effort, right?
You work in different ways.
Could you tell us about the collaborative of the team?
- Well, there's two different parts of the team.
We all work together.
So there's a programming team.
The programming team makes all of our code and there is a mechanism team that makes the things on our robot that push and pull stuff.
- Wow, do you think... That's so cool.
Do you think you could make a robot hamster?
- Maybe.
- Brody was interested in that.
And do you think you could figure out robots that could like cook dinner and do the dishes and stuff?
- Yeah, with the right programming, definitely.
- Wait a minute.
A dishwasher there's like robotic stuff inside of a dishwasher to begin with, right?
- Yes.
- So someone had to figure that out.
Oh, man, okay.
So what would be like if you were thinking big, anything at all that you could program a robot to do that would like change this?
No, no pressure here, but how could change the world with what you're working on a day at a time?
- I think I would make a robotic... Hmm.
- I put you on the spot here.
- I think I would make a robotic cleaning thing so that people would be able to do other important stuff that they have to do.
And you don't have to worry about their house being dirty.
- Man, Miss Stephanie was talking about that, man.
And I tell you over here, I gotta work on...
I got some... Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I can make sometimes.
You know you got me thinking too.
What if the robots could help clean oceans and beaches and nature.
And, but you know what, we also know how to think about it.
We just gotta make sure we don't make a mess, right?
It's kind of that balance between humans and technology.
Yeah, man, you got me thinking, now you got me thinking.

(upbeat music) - Hi Wimmee, hi friends.
I'm glad to be here again to tell you about another great book, robots.
This sure knows a lot about a robot, a very specific robot, right?
We're gonna read a book today or talk about a book today called "How to Make a Friend", written by Steven W. Martin, illustrated by Olivia Esser and published by Clarion Books.
In this book, we meet a girl and you can see she's very industrious and she's going to make a friend.
And since this is about robots and we're talking about robots you might guess that she's making a robot friend.
This book is really cool.
It shows some old fashioned pictures her flicking through books of robots from the past.
And she's just gonna make a friend that's gonna do exactly what she wants it to do.
Whether it's home, work, whatever she wants.
But once she makes the robot, she realizes it's not exactly like a real friend.
It sometimes does what she wants.
Check out how to make, actually make a friend and see if our main character here makes a friend or ends up going out into the world and making a friend, might be both.
Check this book out.
I think you're gonna love it, happy reading.
(upbeat music) - I like the sound of that book a lot.
