Hi, I'm Sarah, from Design Squad Global.
Hi!
I'm Lilly.
We're at the Central Rock gym, and we're way into rock climbing.
I'm a volunteer with Waypoint Adventure.
We take kids who have physical or intellectual disabilities on adventures, like kayaking and rock climbing.
Make it so, like that.
MAN: Just like you have it.
SARAH: You did it perfectly.
MAN: Yes.
I love pulleys.
They help me climb.
SARAH: Pulleys are a really helpful simple machine.
The ropes go around the pulleys and attach to Lilly's harness.
I pull one end of the rope to assist Lilly's climb.
This is a 2:1 pulley system.
It means that it has two pulleys.
With two pulleys, I only have to pull half of Lilly's weight.
Let me show you how it works.
See, this rope goes through a pulley down at the bottom, and a pulley up here.
Lilly's too heavy for me to lift with one pulley, but I can lift her with a 2:1 pulley system because it splits her weight in half.
The rope which doesn't move supports half of Lilly's weight, and with two pulleys, I can lift the other half of Lilly's weight.
Pulleys are great, and you can find them all over the place.
They're in elevators, exercise equipment, and you'll find them on construction sites, too.
With the help from pulleys and climbing equipment, we can all go rock climbing.
See you on the rock wall!
