(playful upbeat music) - (laughs) Hi friends.
I was just reading that sand could be made up, pretty much just about of anything.
Yeah, and what makes sand, sand, is really mostly about its size.
A grain of sand is a tiny tiny bit of rock, mineral, or other matter that has been worn down, usually by the wind or water, eventually, to the size of a grain of sand.
Because it's so small, it's very easy for sand to travel great distances from where it first began.
If you were a grain of sand, where would you like to go?
I think I would like to go all the way around to the other side.
(playful upbeat music continues) - Oh, imagine going all the way around halfway around the earth, and then continuing all the way back around.

- Whoa, what do you have with you?
- I have a lot of sand of different colors, all sorts of colors.
And I've assigned them a little emotions.
(Wimee gasps) So all of these, - Okay.
- Are about emotions.
So for example, my green sand, because it's my favorite color, means happy.
- [Wimee] Yay!
- Yeah, while my purple sand means loved.
- [Wimee] Aw... - So, I wanna show you guys, something that we do in our classes, which is try to say our feelings, our emotions, without using words.

- Cool.
- So, I'll show you.
It's really easy.
- Okay.
- So, for example, today, I ate a lunch that my mom packed for me, so I felt loved.
So in my feelings bottle that I'm gonna fill with sand, I'm gonna fill it with a lot of purple sand, or a lot of love.
- [Wimee] Love!

So as I'm thinking about my day, emotions are really important.

By the end of the day, you've felt a whole lot of emotions.
- [Wimee] Yeah.

- We keep on adding the sands, and then we keep on thinking, how did I feel today, and how can I tell other people how I felt using sand?
Now, after we pour all of our sand, whatever it means, maybe red if you're angry today, or white if you're curious, maybe you learnt something cool at school.
After we do all of that, we have something that looks like this.
- [Wimee] Whoa!

- Wow!
- But also, now its hard to say what we were feeling, because it's all mixed up.

We need to make sure we don't shake this up too much, so that things don't become one thing or become another.
If you were happy, try to remember that you were happy, and don't let it become anger or sadness.
So, when you wanna figure somethings out without using your words, maybe you can try drawing or using sand like we do.

So good to see you all today.
I'm so glad to share another book with you.
Today, I'm gonna talk to you about "Jules Vs The Ocean", written and illustrated by Jessie Sima, and published by Simon and Schuster books.
In this book, we meet Jules.
Jules, as you can tell, is ready to take on the ocean.
She is going to build the best sand castle.
Is it warm enough to build sand castles where you live right now?
It's not where I live, but I love building sand castles, and I'm kind of dreaming of sand castle weather right now.
I would like to join Jules.
Well, as you might guess, and sometimes might happen to you, the ocean and the water comes in, and keeps ruining Jules' sand castles.
At one point, the water even takes her sand castle bucket.
She just lays down and puts her sad face right in the sand.
Just when she thinks all hope is lost and she's never gonna impress her sister with the most spectacular sand castle, her sister comes and joins her, and together, they work on the most impressive sand castle.
What do you think?
Do you think they build the sandcastle and it stays, and they leave the beach thinking it's just standing there, or does the water take their sandcastle before they head home for the night?
Check out "Jules Vs The Ocean", to see what happens in this very sandy story.
Happy reading, friends.
(upbeat music) - (laughs) I love the title, "Jules Vs The Ocean".
(mimics drum rolls) Friends, guess what?
My friend, Heidi, over at Muskegon Area District Library, is here for today's Explore and Create.
(bright upbeat music) - Hi, Wimee.
Hi, friends.
My name is Heidi, and I work at the Holton and Montague branches of Muskegon Area District Library.
I'm coming to you today from our Monague Storyville, and not only do we have a yellow submarine, but we also have this beautiful mural of the coast of Lake Michigan.
As you can see, there is a sandy beach all along the coast of this area of Lake Michigan.
Have you ever been to the beach before?
Did you know that sand can be different colors based on what it's made out of?
Our sand here is kind of a tan color, but, I've been to a beach before, where the sand was made out of lava rocks, which made the sand black.
It was pretty cool.
So, the next time that you go to the beach, make sure to look to see what color the sand is.
And while you're there, maybe you could build a sand castle.
It's one of my favorite things to do at the beach.
Did you know that the tallest sand castle ever made was over 69 feet tall?
That's more than three giraffes stacked on top of each other.
Wow!
That's a tall sand castle.
So, giraffes.
They don't live in the sand, do they?
Not many animals do.
A lot of animals can't survive in the sand.
There are some crabs and some beetles and some flies that can live in the sand, but there is one animal that sand is very important to, and that is the sea turtle.
Sea turtles swim to the shore and they crawl across the sand and they lay their eggs in a hole in the sand.
The sand helps to protect the eggs, and then when little baby turtles hatch out of the eggs, they crawl up out of the hole, crawl across the sand again, and then swim away.
So sand's actually the first home for our baby turtles.
So, another place that I love to find sand, is on a sand dune.
Sand dunes are basically just big hills of sand, and they're really important to our ecosystem.
They help to protect our coastline from wind and waves, and we can help protect the dunes by only walking and playing in areas where we're allowed to do that.
So, I hope that you will get to visit a sand dune or a beach sometime very soon.
(upbeat music) - Thanks, Heidi!
Oh, man, Muskegon Area District Library over on the west side of Michigan, right near the beaches.
Man, how much shoreline do we have in Michigan?
