I'm Courtney Cochran.
- And I'm Libby.
- And we're bringing you your very last science lesson for "Rise and Shine" today, which makes me a little sad, but Libby and I are going to teach you a process that you can use to continue to explore the world around you, even after we're done today.
So this process is called design thinking.
And science, you know, is all about trying new things, taking risks, failing, getting back up and trying again.
But design thinking is going to help us kind of work through that process of failing and trying new things again, to solve a problem.
And it goes like this.
So first you have to empathize.
You have to really be able to understand the people or things that have the problem so you can find the best solution for them.
Then you have to research and find out everything you can about the problem both past and present.
The third step is to clearly define the problem using all of that information that you gained by empathizing and researching.
And then fourth, you have to ideate.
Do you know what that means, Libby?
- I have no idea.
- So to ideate means to dream or envision, it's like brainstorming all the possible solutions to a problem.
Then you have to develop and test your prototype.
A prototype is like the first example of your solution.
And then you're gonna repeat the process over and over until you can find the solution that's like perfect or almost perfect.
We're gonna try out design thinking with a very popular story you probably know, it's called the "Three little pigs".
So Libby and I have talked a bit about this, we know we can empathize with the three little pigs, right?
Would you want a wolf hanging around your family?
- No.
- No, me either.
And we've researched, we've discovered that this particular species of wolf has a very strange adaptation.
It has very strong lungs and it can blow over shelters.
So we've clearly defined the problem, too.
What's the problem, Libby?
- That two houses aren't strong enough.
- Yeah, and the pigs need that shelter from the wolf because he's so dangerous.
And we've thought of some solutions.
We've built some prototypes and we're going to test them out today.
Libby is going to be our wolf.
Are you ready to test out our prototype, Libby?
- Yes.
- Okay, here we go.
(air blows loudly) Uh-oh, that house certainly didn't work.
Let's try the next prototype.
(air blows loudly) That one fell down, too.
Let's try our third prototype, Libby.
Hey, look at that.
We found one that works.
Great job.
And great job, scientists.
You've been amazing this summer.
Thank you much for joining us today and every day.
I want you to go out into the world and I want you to try out this design thinking to solve your problems.
And I want you to make the world a better place every single day.
Never stop exploring and never stop discovering.
Way to go, Libby.
Bye, everybody.
