(exciting energetic music) (exciting energetic music continues) (exciting energetic music fades) - [Narrator] Today on "Secret Dealers", a vast collection of wonderful antiques pushes friendly rivalry into outright hostility.
- What I call plain sneaky.
- Couldn't you roll up into a ball and disappear, mate?
- [Mike] Just shows you, nobody's your mate.
- It's gonna be an interesting day.
- [Narrator] And when it comes to revenge, you don't get mad, you get even.
- All I'm thinking is old scores to be settled.
- Well he's like a terrier with a rabbit in his mouth and he's shaking it, he just won't let go.
- [Narrator] But who will come out on top?
- 470.
Wasn't even a contest.
Didn't even play hard, now watch me go.
- [Narrator] The unlikely battleground for all this rivalry is a bungalow stuffed to the rafters with ducks.
(duck quacks) Not those kind of ducks, Royal Dux Porcelain.
It's been avidly collected by David who admits he's been a bit of an addict when it comes to his favorite porcelain maker.
- I just cannot say no.
I've got lots of willpower, but no wallpower.
(laughs) - [Narrator] But now it's time to earn some money back from his avid collecting as a recent visitor has caused some damage to his home.
(playful music) - A squirrel ate through my electric, so I need some new electric.
(laughs) As I'm only on the pension, I need a little bit of money that way it seems.
Some will go on repairs and some will go in the bank.
- [Narrator] Well, how much your bank balance increases David, will depend on what the secret dealers are prepared to spend.
Today they are Mike, Simon, and David.
- It's not always about making a profit.
Sometimes it's just wonderful to have an object pass through your hands.
- Profit is what makes me tick.
- You've gotta be prepared to put your money where your mouth is.
- [Narrator] Okay dealers, you have 1 hour while David's out to place your sealed and secret bids on anything you want to buy.
- Welcome to my country home, boys.
- Oh this is your country home, is it Simon?
- Yes I got new bids on everything today.
- [Narrator] Well, let's hope they've got deep pockets then, Simon.
- This is a real Aladdin's cave.
- [David] Gosh.
- [Narrator] Right then lads, first one to guess what the homeowner likes.
- I think whoever lives here quite likes Royal Dux.
- [Narrator] Bingo.
- There's thousands of pieces.
- No there isn't.
- Well, hundreds.
- Oh, not quite.
- Dozens.
- Yes.
- Lots.
(exciting energetic music) (gasps) It's everywhere.
I honestly don't know where to begin.
- [Narrator] You're not the only one.
- Well, well, well, where do I start?
I have to say I'm absolutely flabbergasted, this room is full of Royal Dux, Czechoslovakian porcelain dating from the beginning of the 20th century mainly, and some very fine pieces of Dux.
But the market for Dux has completely collapsed.
(lighthearted music) - I've paid quite good prices for some of them, I really wanted them and I was quite happy to pay it.
- [Narrator] Let's just hope our dealers feel the same way.
- We've got a room full of what appears to be Royal Dux, which I know these boys are in love with, me personally, don't like it.
- Mike will tell you he doesn't know about anything.
He's not gonna bid on anything.
He's skin, he can't spend any money, and then he'll leave money on every single one.
What can I say?
It's gonna be an interesting day.
- [Mike] A reasonable naked body.
- [Narrator] I think you're right, Simon, Mike's all over the Royal Dux.
- [Mike] Yeah, can you imagine that naked?
- [Narrator] But he's being rather selective.
- Female forms, all of which are nice.
I think she is pleasant.
It's suggestive, it looks dare I say it, relatively sexy.
It's semi-naked ladies and people love 'em.
Well here we've got a art nouveau Royal Dux figure.
Ladies sweeping, soap dish, little flower holder, semi-naked, just as the market likes.
I'm gonna leave a price on that, doesn't appear to be damaged.
- [Narrator] The Royal Dux centerpiece gets its first bid.
Now what's David got?
- [David] I found a gold watch.
It's by Zenith and it's 9 carat, (light upbeat music) it's quite nice with a nice plain face.
So I'll make an offer for that.
- [Narrator] That's not the only bits of gold to catch his eye.
- [David] And this, this looks heavy, bracelet I suppose.
Sort of masculine, isn't it?
And that's 9 carat as well, so I'll put it there, I'll put that on top.
- [Narrator] So that's the gold bracelet and the pocket watch and chain getting an offer from David.
- [David] Right.
- [Narrator] Tucked away in the kitchen, Simon has found this art deco spelter figurine.
- Nice subject.
This is a copy of a bronze figure by an artist called Lorenzo in actual fact.
And there are some spelter Lorenzo.
Spelter is a soft metal.
For me, I can see the attraction, I think she's gorgeous.
I mean from the hair, the clothing.
She's sort of full of action.
She's vibrant.
I think it's lovely.
I'm gonna leave a strong bid on that.
And from everything we've seen in here, it's fair to say that's my favorite item.
- [Narrator] She is beautiful, Simon.
- [Simon] That's my bid for her.
- [Narrator] So much to see in the house.
The dealers are getting stuck in.
- This needs looking up.
- Howdy partner.
Saleable.
- [Narrator] Mike adds his bid to the gold bracelet.
- If I buy it, you know where it's going, into the mighty pot down the road from our house.
- [Narrator] And the pocket watch and chain.
- Very pleasant.
- [Narrator] But what are Simon and David gonna do about all this Royal Dux?
(energetic music) - There's a couple of bits here that I've had a few times and I can remember selling them for really good money, but- - Oh yes.
- I'm afraid we're in a different market at the moment.
- I remember a pair of figures like that making 5, 600 pounds or more.
And now what would they fetch at auction?
- That will be revealed later on.
- Yeah, they're not nearly as much though.
- [Narrator] Well that doesn't stop you both bidding on the Royal Dux centerpiece.
- Little risque, slightly nude ladies.
Right, let's have a little look in here.
- [Narrator] So it's not surprising that David also takes a fancy to the elegant art deco figure.
- It's quite nice, so I'll make an offer for that.
Under there with Simon.
- [Narrator] The dealers just have time for one last scout around the house.
- [Simon] And into this room.
- [Narrator] And in the final few seconds, Simon adds his bid to the gold bracelet, and pocket watch and chain.
- I really think that's enough for me, today.
I'm gonna cross my fingers now and I hope I've done the right thing.
- Now that's me finished I think.
I'll tell you what, I've worked this one, I'll have a cup of tea.
What?
What is that?
This, what I call, plain sneaky.
We're in the kitchen of the house, they told me there's nothing in here.
And what we've got here is an art deco spelter figure.
Of value.
- [Narrator] You don't think they hid it from you, Mike?
- You know I'm a bit annoyed about that.
You know, you chat, you talk and all of a sudden for the sake of a few hundred pound, sneaky.
(curious music) Just shows you, nobody's your mate.
And you can back every horse in the race that MAM will be taking that home.
(exciting music) - [Narrator] Well we're about to find out Mike, and boy does it turn into one hell of a grudge match.
- 370.
- 375.
- 380.
My main reason for bidding is to settle a few scores.
- I just wish he'd leave me alone.
- So let pain commence.
- You must like this, Mike?
- Same as you, Simon.
(exciting music) - [Narrator] Homeowner David's house is now scattered with bid cards and the dealers were overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff on offer.
- Well whoever lives in a house like this is a very enthusiastic collector of just about everything.
- [Narrator] But in this game, it's not just about the antiques, there's fierce rivalry too.
- All I'm thinking is old scores to be settled.
- I think I might be a bit competition with Mr. Melody, does seem to latch onto things that I want.
- [Narrator] This could be interesting.
So is homeowner David up for a battle?
- No, it's from a very, I'm a pushover.
(laughs) I'm definitely a pushover.
But my friend Amanda who lives next door in the barn, is here for moral support and she knows a little bit about antiques and so we'll go on from there.
- [Narrator] I'm sure you'll do just fine David.
And just in case you do need any extra help, you'll have the verdict of the secret valuer to help you negotiate the best deal.
So let's see how much of the dealer's money you could be grabbing today.
- In here, we've had a good rummage, is the maximum amount you could earn today if you sold everything at our highest bids.
All right.
Can't be none.
(gasps) (group laughs) 8,855 pounds.
That'll pay for some new windows.
- [Narrator] It certainly could, David, so let's crack on.
(fast upbeat music) First up, it's the 1920s art deco figure that ignited the simmering feud between Simon and Mike.
- I should be leaving here with it, but you never know.
- There's only one winner for this figure.
They hid it, I'll buy it.
- [Narrator] And that's the bell for round one.
- What can you tell us about this David?
- It belonged to my late brother and I asked for it because I always liked it.
- So does that mean that it's got a huge sentimental attachment?
- No, not really.
- All right, so we can put a financial figure on that today.
- Yes.
- We've all left a bid on it.
- We have.
- For your figure, I have offered you 250 pounds.
- Right.
- That's a very good start, 'cause I'm not so strong, 160 pounds.
- Mm-hmm.
- And I just put me hat in the ring, so I went in at 195.
- No.
So we should see what this says.
- [Narrator] Simon's making the running so far, but Mike's bearing a grudge.
This could go the distance.
- That is a strong bid in my opinion, so I'm gonna call myself out.
- All right and yourself?
- Yeah, put me out in the ring, 270.
- Oh.
(tense dramatic music) - 300.
- And 10.
- You must like this, Mike?
- Same as you, Simon.
- 315.
- 20.
- 325.
- 30.
- 35.
- 40.
- 45.
- 350.
- Well he's like a terrier with a rabbit in his mouth and it's shaking it, he just won let go.
- Simon can push the price to the moon and back again.
I'm going home with the figure.
- One wonders, is it a battle for prophet, or is the battle of ego and vanity?
- 355.
- 360.
- Can't you roll up into a ball and disappear, Mike?
365.
- 370.
- 375.
- 380.
- I'm out.
- I'm quite happy with that.
- David, thank you very much.
- Thank you.
(bright upbeat music) That's quite a surprise really that it made so much.
- I think Mike has paid too much for it to stop me buying it.
- He's probably quite correct.
Wasn't even a contest.
Didn't even play hard.
Now watch me go.
- [Narrator] OMG, the gloves were off on that one.
What's your take on it, David?
- I think they both wanted to outbid each other and they somehow rather lose sight of the fact that they're actually competing for an antique.
They start competing with each other.
- [Narrator] Up next is the vintage 9 carat gold bracelet.
There's not gonna be a rematch is there?
- My main reason for bidding is to settle a few scores.
- I've actually got a client ask me for a decent gentleman's gold bracelet.
So I can probably give a little bit over scrap for this one.
- So let pain commence.
- I bought it from my cousin who was a jeweler in Halifax in about 1960.
- Yeah, that'll do me.
That's all right.
Gold is relatively reasonable.
- Quite cheap by comparison.
- Yeah, yeah.
- It's gone up a bit.
- It's gone up a lot.
So we should be able to be giving you a good profit on this one.
- Well I don't mind going first, 'cause let's make my offer 350 pounds.
- All right.
- My offer for your bracelet is 365 pound.
- And my offer for your bracelet is 380 pounds.
- But I think we'd look at that first too.
To sort of... - [Narrator] All three dealers have made respectable opening offers, but they've a way to go to reach the top valuation.
So who wants it most?
(tense music) - 430 Pounds.
- 435 Pounds.
- 440 Pounds.
(tense music) - It's got very marginal now.
445 pounds.
(dramatic music) - 450.
- 455.
- 460.
- See me off David.
- 465.
- I think you've seen me off too.
- David, after a long enduring battle, 465 pounds for your gold bracelet, do we have a deal?
- We do have a deal.
- Thank you very much indeed.
- Thank you.
- [Narrator] Simon's counter punch.
But has he paid too much for it?
- Simon's got the gold bracelet for 465.
Got him.
- I think I can easily get off of a client.
5, maybe 550, so I'm really happy to own it.
- There's not much profit in it, if any.
- [Narrator] That remains to be seen, David.
One thing that won't be making anyone a profit for now is that Royal Dux.
(upbeat music) Their value has recently nosedived even this wonderful centerpiece which all the dealers loved, wasn't immune.
- It is today's market value that is gonna determine whether or not we can buy that.
- Beautiful thing, I don't think I've left enough money.
- Wouldn't take 320 for it?
- [Narrator] Simon made a decent offer but it wasn't enough for David.
- No, no, I'll net too big a loss.
It didn't get offered enough and I've only had them about six months and they were 700 pound I paid.
- [Narrator] Cripes, in fact, out of the entire collection, only one Royal Dux was sold, a group of elephants to Mr. Ford for 240 pounds.
And David also snapped up a pair of Moorcroft vases for 170 pounds.
And a Chinese hardwood marble top stand went to Mike.
- 195 Pounds.
- It's a deal.
- Thank you.
- [Narrator] For 195 quid.
And with more items still to come, homeowner David is hoping for a small fortune.
- Basically so I can buy some more Royal Dux.
(laughs) (playful music) - [Narrator] It's time for our final item, The gold chain and pocket watch belong to David's late brother.
So does this mean he'll have trouble selling it?
- No, no, no.
If it means money, it's money.
- [Narrator] Spoken like a true Yorkshireman.
- Yes.
- [Narrator] So what do the secret dealers think?
- The watch is ticking away, quite a good maker.
Hey, what's to complain about?
- There's a few pounds to be made on this one, if you can get it for the right price.
- I'm going home with it.
- Now is this something you've had for a long while, David?
- The watch was my brothers, late brothers, and the watch chain was my father's.
- Well the pocket watch is a sort of pretty standard open face, cylinder movement.
Can't really think of much else to say about it.
- [David] Well there isn't much else to say.
- I'll start if you like.
- Yeah, go on.
- 315 pound.
(dramatic music) - Right.
- 385 pound.
- Oh.
- 285 pounds.
I'm 100 pounds behind you Michael.
- I cannot believe it.
- It's quite surprising.
- Shall we have a look at this?
- Yeah.
- Oof, much, much more I'm afraid.
- [Narrator] All three dealers are miles away from the secret valuation.
Come on boys, you can do better than that, surely.
- 400 pounds for your watch and chain.
- And 10, 410.
- I bid what I thought it was worth.
I don't need it, so I'll bow out.
- [Narrator] Now that's surprising.
Mike said he wanted to go home with this watch.
Perhaps he doesn't have the stomach for this fight.
- 440.
- 450.
- 455 pounds for your watch and chain.
- 460.
- I like to make a profit, I'm out.
- 470.
(chuckling) - I would imagine that Mr. Ford and Simon are not too happy with my new found tactic.
- His gamesmanship is sometimes a little irritating, isn't it?
- I just wish he'd leave me alone.
- [Narrator] In the battle to own David's 1930s pocket watch grudges are coming to the fore and games are being played.
After ruling himself out of the running, Mike's come back in with a bid of 470 pounds, which is seen off David and now appears to have worked on Simon.
- This is the man you've gotta deal with.
- Thank you.
- [Narrator] What more can happen?
- We got a deal?
- Not yet.
- Mike's not gonna have it all his own way.
And according to the secret valuation, he's still got a long way to go.
- Now I've seen that, I've gotta come back say 480 then, haven't I?
- Oh, let's all get in the act, 490.
- The old geezer comes and gives me a bit of a kicking.
Am I bothered?
No.
I'm going home with the watch.
I'll leave it to them and come back when I feel like it.
- I mean that does influence you a little bit.
- Oh absolutely.
- It does, yeah.
- 500 pounds.
- Well I came back and tried, I'm now out.
- I'll go to actually tenner, 510.
- No, I'm out.
- It's a deal.
- Thank you very much.
Thank you.
Yeah, I bought the watch 510, I was always going home with it.
Those boys wouldn't know what hit 'em.
- Well, well done Mike.
(upbeat music) - [Narrator] Said through gritted teeth me thinks David.
- He's had to pay for it, hasn't he though?
- Trust me, he's given too much for it.
- [Narrator] We'll find out later, Simon.
Sparks really did fly between the dealers today, so let's hope all that infighting means a big payout for our homeowner.
- You have managed to take from us today, 3,492 pounds.
- Ooh in cash.
(laughs) - [Simon] Thank you very much indeed.
- Ooh, thank you.
When are you coming again?
(group laughs) - When are you gonna start selling your Royal Dux?
- (laughs) I might think about it.
- [Narrator] Just enjoy that massive wad of cash for now, David.
(dramatic music) After all that drama and tension, I think it's time to give those dealers a rest.
So in our next home, let's bring in Tim, Allison, and Mark.
- For me, there isn't a price that I won't give.
If I want something I will always try and buy it no matter what the money is.
- When it comes to bidding, I am like a warrior.
- I don't have a game plan for the bidding, I just want to be the number one bidder.
- [Narrator] And the destination is here, a home stuffed with art on the walls, quirky antiques, and tucked away in every nook and cranny, gold.
It all belongs to Craig and his wife Michelle, who bought most of their collection as a future investment.
- In the house there is various items, there's silver, gold, and Michelle's quite partial to diamonds, and she's very understanding where she will wear it for a year, 18 months, and then allow me to sell it.
- [Narrator] Oh, how romantic Craig.
But they do have a very good reason for selling up.
- We've decided to sell everything in the house and make a clean break and move to Italy.
It's something, a lifelong dream.
And we could only realize that by selling everything that we've accumulated over many years.
- [Narrator] But just because they're saying arrivederci to these shores, it doesn't mean they'll be selling things cheaply.
- I only need two of them to get into a biding war and then- - That would be nice.
- I can play one off against the other.
- [Narrator] Well it's a plan.
So while Craig and Michelle nip out for a cappuccino, dealers, you have one hour to snoop around.
- Isn't it exciting when you first get in a house?
- Ooh, ooh.
- Very exciting.
(energetic music) - Here we are in the sitting room.
(Allison laughing) - There is nothing more desirable to an antique dealer than a closed box.
- [Narrator] This should be just like Christmas for you in this house then Alison.
- The thrill.
- [Narrator] You wait 'til you see what Tim's found.
- Good grief.
It's like a pawn broker's safe.
Seven chains, scrap good chains, 41.8 grams, three rings, crikey Moses.
I've got a massive panic on here that I personally cannot get through all that gold in the hour that it takes us to do the rummage, there is just so much.
And obviously there's more rooms in this house that I wanna see as well.
- [Narrator] Ah, there's only one thing for it than, Tim, you'd better get sorting.
- It's getting to me in a fluster, this house.
I'm getting flustered.
- [Narrator] Give over, you've only just started.
You'll never guess what Mark's just found.
- Gold.
There's gold in this box.
Half sovereigns in there and sovereigns in here.
Three trays, sovereigns, halfs, a little bit of a mixture.
- The sovereigns are coins that we've collected over the last few years, just really as more of an investment than anything else.
- And mostly bought at auction and probably paid too much if I'm honest, and hopefully the dealers will make a bid for them.
- [Narrator] Well let's hope you didn't pay too much, Craig.
Our dealers know how much these are worth to the penny.
- Only one price, it's scrap value.
No more, no less, and that's all I will be bidding for it.
- [Narrator] We'll see Mark.
Upstairs, Allison has discovered this elegant modern reversal watch.
- And the reason it's called a reversal, it's gotta clear the little mechanism.
So you pull that up there, you push the face in.
In fact, actually, that is too small for a man.
That is a lady's.
That's a shame, so that strap would have to be changed.
- [Narrator] You could try selling it to a lady, Alison.
Anyway, it still gets her bid.
(energetic music) Downstairs, Tim's acting like a man possessed and he's made remarkable progress, sorting out all of the gold into piles, but it's taken its toll on the poor fella.
- [Allison] What have you been doing in- - Oh, Allison, you know I love gold, but even this is too much for Timmy.
Stick the kettle on, I will have a very strong coffee and a big plate of biscuits just to get my sugar levels going again.
- Your wish is my command.
- Bless.
- [Narrator] Come on.
Final push now Timmy.
- I just have this feeling that we've done all this work and he's not gonna sell this.
- [Narrator] I hope so, for your sake.
- Final bid.
Done in.
- [Narrator] Just the rest of the house to do now then Tim.
Next door, Marks found something nice and it's not gold.
- Silver cigarette case, maker is Walker and Hall, very well known company.
Made in the 1930s, these are cedar lined, the wood.
We turn over, it has a lead weight underneath there.
So the base of this has lead inside of it, to give it stability.
So, although we look at it and we feel it, oh, lot of silver here, don't be fooled.
The silver is just wrapped around a casing of wood and lead on the bottom.
- [Narrator] Mm, nice tip that.
(upbeat music) So the 1930 cigarette case and its contents gets a bid from Mark.
- [Mark] There's the bid for that.
- Some potpourri in there.
- [Narrator] The action is really hotting up now, with all three dealers running around the house, placing their bids.
- Surprise, surprise, more gold.
- [Narrator] Tim might be sick of the sight of it, but both he and Allison add their bids to the collection of gold sovereigns.
They also add their bid to the cigarette case and silver contents.
And if our dealers need anything to haul their loot off with today, Tim's found just the thing, a vintage steamer trunk.
- Decorative coffee table.
I'm thinking interior decor today.
- [Narrator] Ooh, very trendy.
- [Allison] Bit of gold chain.
I should grab that.
- [Narrator] The dealers are grabbing what they can and making their final bids.
Tim takes a punt on the Cartier reversal watch.
- Top brand.
Always very, very popular.
So we'll have a bid on that.
- [Narrator] And both Mark and Allison bid on the vintage trunk.
- This really captures a bygone age.
- [Narrator] And with a final flurry of bids, the hour is almost up.
- Bag number 43.
- [Narrator] But Alison and Mark still have to go through all that gold.
- I'm looking at all of this and to me, I can just see a big burning furnace.
- [Narrator] But Allison spotted one thing she wants to save.
- I spotted an 18 carat gold bracelet, and I don't want to big it up, but I have a client for it, and I really want to get that piece.
- Best of luck with that Alison, 'cause you haven't met our amateur bullion dealer Craig yet.
- What's your feelings?
- It's a no deal.
I would rather keep it.
And I think I'd rather keep it.
- I'm not here to pay for his mistakes.
- [Narrator] But there's a mountain of gold they all want.
- That lot, has my name written right the way across the top of the box.
5,100 pounds.
- It will be a bloodbath on that bidding, a bloodbath.
- [Narrator] The secret dealers have had just one hour to leave all their bids in Craig and Michelle's house.
- There is going to be something for us all in here, I can just smell it.
- [Narrator] But there was one thing that outshone the rest.
- Gold, gold, gold.
It's everywhere.
I was absolutely knocked sideways.
- There'll be maximum gold pricing off today.
And Craig would have to think very seriously not to take our money.
- [Narrator] But not without a fight first, Alison.
- My whole life's been about negotiating.
When I was sort of 7 or 8, I started a shop outside the front of our house and we used to sell Corgi toy cars.
So I've started dealing since I've been 7 years old.
- [Narrator] Well, let's find out just how much cash you'll be battling for today.
- This is the sum total of our bids.
- Thank you.
- Let's have a look, thank you.
- [Craig] 25,216 pounds.
- Whoa.
- Wow.
- Very good.
- [Narrator] Now that's a serious wad of cash.
- Whether we achieve that figure or not, I don't know.
We are open to offers on everything and everything is for sale, we'll just have to see.
- [Narrator] Well, there's no time to waste.
Our first item is this vintage trunk, but which if any of our dealers will be carrying it off?
- Great trunk.
Love it.
- I would like to buy this trunk because they don't come along that often.
- How'd you get hold of it?
- It was bought from Belgium, from Waterloo, the antique fair there and it is very original and very beautiful.
A steamer trunk, I think we describe it as.
- Right should we see where the money is then?
Craig and Michelle?
My bid for your steamer trunk is 120 pounds.
(tense music) - Okay.
- And my offer is 100 pounds.
- Okay.
- Okay.
- And my offer is 150 pounds.
- Let's have a look at the valuation now.
- [Narrator] Mark's bid is below the top valuation, but Tim wants it too.
- I've gotta say Mark, I think that's a good offer for it.
So I am gonna stand down, I chant bid anymore.
- Okay.
- Tim?
- 160.
- Mark?
- 165.
- 170.
- 175.
- 180.
- I think it's worth, rustic, a couple of hundred quid.
- I agree.
- And I've gotta get a profit.
And for me, at 180, I'm gonna call it a day, that's me finished.
- And I'm gonna sell it to you.
- Thank you very much Craig.
- Thank you very much.
- Thank you Michelle.
- He wanted it and he wasn't gonna lose it to either myself or Mark.
- I was victorious.
- [Narrator] All right, Tim, it's a trunk, not D-day.
- (chuckles) No.
- [Narrator] Next, it's the silver cigarette case and contents.
- Clean, honest cigarette case.
Few items of silver inside of it, has a price and I wouldn't mind buying it.
- All it means is a polish and you can sell it straight away.
- You can put your knickknacks in it, can't you?
- Yeah, accoutrements, which is what I thought.
- Absolutely.
Good word.
I would prefer say elastic bands and paper plates.
- Right.
(group laughs) - Get your knick-knacks out, show him the bid.
- I beg your pardon?
There's ladies present.
My bid is 70 pound.
- Mm-hmm, that's very good.
My offer is 40 pounds.
- My offer is 85 pounds.
(tense music) - [Narrator] Tim means business today.
He's gone over the secret valuation with his opening bid.
All the dealers like the cigarette box.
There's still a lot of puff left in this deal.
(dramatic music) - So you are at 85, I'm gonna chuck 90 pounds on the table.
- And do you know what I'm gonna do?
I wanna chuck 95 on the table.
- 100 pounds.
- 105.
- I can feel a battle brewing between these two.
And I have that feeling, it is the time for me to say- - You're out.
- I'm out.
I can feel the tension between Allison and Tim.
There's a battle brewing and I'm not gonna be part of it.
- There's always a battle brewing between myself and Allison, like one of those old-fashioned trains that once I get going, you know that you have to shovel the coal in and she knows exactly how to shovel that coal in.
- [Narrator] Well his choo choo Tim done enough to bag this deal?
- 110.
- 115.
- 120.
- At 120, I'm out.
- We'll take that.
- Thank you Craig.
- Thank you very much.
- Thank you Michelle.
- Thank you.
- [Craig] We are delighted with that.
We're really pleased.
- Yes, really pleased.
- [Narrator] And it's two outta two for Tim.
He must be pleased.
- I paid 120 pounds for it, and I paid 20 pounds too much for it.
- [Narrator] Maybe not, we'll see if he's overpaid a little bit later.
But now we've got a mountain of gold to get through and things are already going pear shaped.
- So no sale?
- No.
No sale.
- No sale.
- Craig has refused to part with any of that gold that the dealer's took ages sorting through.
- I think I'd rather keep it.
- Help me.
- Including that 18 carat gold woven bracelet.
- Can I not tempt you at 775?
- You can't, unfortunately, Alison, it's a very good bid, especially with the other bids that were on the table.
But no, you can't.
We paid 920 pounds for that, at 775- - It was just not quite enough.
- Not quite enough.
- I'm not here to pay for his mistakes.
- [Narrator] Ooh, is that a touch of bitterness, Alison?
Because you haven't bought anything yet.
Either way, today's gold prices means it's not looking good for the case of sovereigns and half sovereigns, but the dealers are determined to strike a deal.
- I'd like those sovereigns, but I know Mark and Tim, they're gonna want them too.
- That lot has my name written right the way across the top of the box.
- We know to the penny how much this gold is worth.
Why have you got so much gold?
- Well, my thought was 3, 4, 5, 6 years ago, I thought by 2014, 2015 the precious metal market would've shot up, and it's tangible, it's not why stocks and shares, you have it, you keep it, if it's in the bank, you know you can always go to it.
- It's accessible.
You can go, you can sell it.
You have always got it there in your hands.
- Yes.
- Yeah.
- So it's really just down to how much is on the table.
- Okay.
- Right, my offer for your box of sovereigns and half sovereigns is 4,751 pounds.
- [Craig] Okay.
(tense music) - And my offer is 3,900 pounds.
- And my offer is 5,000 pounds.
- [Craig] Okay.
Okay.
- [Narrator] At 5,000 pounds, Mark's bid is the strongest, but there's still room for improvement.
- 5,010 pounds.
(dramatic music) (Tim sighs) - Don't go up in toasting.
It'll be embarrassing.
- 5,030.
(dramatic music continues) - 5,100 Pounds.
- I don't see it there, to get a profit outta that now, someone is gonna have to work at it, or be hopeful that the gold price goes up.
- Yes.
- Yeah.
- So I'm gonna drop out.
- Okay.
Thank you very much.
- So it's me and you, Mark eh?
- Me and you Uncle Timothy.
I can see Tim wants them.
I can feel that tension between us.
I've got a feeling though, are we wasting our time?
- I think he's a very cool customer and no I don't think he's gonna sell.
5,120 pounds.
- Okay.
- 5,130 pounds.
- I'm out.
- Okay.
- You've had a look at the valuation.
- Yes.
- What's your feelings?
- It's a no deal.
- You must surprise me, Craig.
- Would a little bit more buy them?
We're tight, you know we're tight.
- Yes, of course.
- Help me.
- It would have to be a bang in the middle of that really for me to let it go.
- So you would sell them to me today now for 5,250 pounds.
Is that what- - I'd shake your hand and I've probably lost 750.
- Give us your hand.
We got a deal.
- Take care.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
- Thank you.
- I've probably taken quite a big hit on those.
Maybe a loss of a thousand pounds.
- He's taken all the meat off the bone with these.
- His profit will be very, very lean.
- Let's put it this way, it's beans on toast for tea for Mark Stevens tonight.
(upbeat music) (intense upbeat music) - [Narrator] So how much of the secret dealer's hard-earned cash will be going to Craig and Michelle today?
- We have spent with you.
I hope you're gonna be happy.
6,798 pounds.
- Wow.
It's been fantastic.
You've educated us.
- It's been lovely.
- You've bought some items, which is fantastic, and it's been an absolute pleasure to meet you all.
- [Narrator] Wow, nearly 7 grand despite selling hardly any gold.
- What I've realized, it's very easy to buy things and it's much more difficult to sell them.
- Yes.
- [Narrator] The secret dealers have spent over 10 grand of their own money today.
But have they managed to make any profit?
Tim managed to bag himself the vintage trunk for 180 pounds and shipped it off for 200.
But he wasn't so confident about the cigarette case and its contents.
- I paid 120 pounds for it and I paid 20 pounds too much for it.
- Oh, have a little faith in yourself, Tim.
He managed to sell it for 140 pounds.
Mark made the biggest deal of the day, splashing out 5,250 pounds for Craig sovereigns.
- Give us your hand.
We got a deal.
- Take care, thank you.
- Thank you very much.
- [Narrator] Tim thought he definitely paid too much.
- Let's put it this way, it's beans on toast for tea for Mark Stevens tonight.
- [Narrator] I think you'll find Tim, it's more filet steak as Mark sold the coins for 5,650 pounds.
- What a great day, that's a result.
- [Narrator] But what about the rumble in the jungle between Mike and Simon?
- Can't you roll up into a ball and disappear, Mike?
- [Narrator] So who came out on top?
It all started off with that innocent looking spelter figure.
- I think Mike has paid too much for it to stop me buying it.
- [Narrator] Well actually Simon, he managed to sell it for 430 pounds.
- Now watch me go.
- [Narrator] Let's not celebrate too quickly, Mike.
You sold the 1930s pocket watch for a loss, which nearly wiped out any profit.
(Mike sighs) Music to some people's ears, no doubt.
And to make matters worse, it was Simon who came out on top for the 9 carat gold bracelet.
- 465 Pounds for your gold bracelet, do we have a deal?
- We do have a deal.
- Thank you very much indeed.
- Thank you.
- [Narrator] And to rub salt into the wound, he made a nice little profit too.
- There was only gonna be one winner today and it was me.
- So can we finally put this grudge match to bed Mr. Melody?
(Mike laughs) (exciting energetic music) (exciting energetic music continues) (exciting energetic ends) (no audio)
