♪ -This week, we're back in the home of Marley and Michael where our couple is expecting twins.
Even more exciting, they're having a girl and a boy who will be sharing the same room.
Travel is important to our couple, and they hope to impart to their children a sense of wide-eyed wonder about the world in which we live.
We'll be finishing our nursery today, so let the journey begin on "Baby Makes 3."
-Oh, my gosh.
-That moment when you go from couple to family, everything changes.
When you bring the baby home, you want to create a warm, comfortable, and safe environment for them.
Step one -- the nursery.
-Hi.
I'm Marley.
-My name is Michael.
-And we are having twins.
-So I'm a clinical physicist that works in radiation oncology.
-I went to medical school, and now I'm in a residency program for pediatrics and anesthesia.
-So we decided we wanted a travel theme for our nursery.
That's been some of our best memories together.
-Yeah.
Hopefully, this will be the start of instilling the love of travel for the babies, for sure.
Yeah.
I think the process has been great.
I mean, it's been fun to kind of get involved with some of these projects, certainly stuff that we've never done before.
-Right, right.
-Last time, on "Baby Makes 3," we introduced our couple to many projects from the practical to the whimsical.
We added modern wainscoting to our nursery and added a full-wall world map.
We helped our couple convert a love seat into a double rocker, and we created wall art that doubles as a night light.
Today, there is much to do to finish our journey.
Right now, we're going to get started on building our telephone-booth bookshelf.
-So, Michael, in keeping with your travel theme for your nursery, we're creating a bookshelf that's going to look like a phone booth straight out of London.
-Sounds good.
-Paint it red.
Should look great.
So we're going to let Dylan explain how they actually are going to put that together and what the overall process is.
-Sure.
Yeah, so we wanted to come up with a design, again, that looks like that phone booth.
-Mm-hmm.
-But it's pretty simple to construct.
We've gone ahead and cut all the lumber to the right dimensions, and then, we're just going to assemble it, and we'll have a few cuts to make to put the product together.
It'll go together with some nails and a little bit of glue.
-All right.
-Sounds good.
-So super quick?
-Yeah.
It should be pretty fast.
-Very good.
All right.
Let's go ahead and grab a couple pieces and get started.
-All right.
So the first thing we're going to do is build the corners.
-Okay.
-The way we constructed it, we want the corners to ultimately look square, so the material is 1x3 and 1x2, so when we put that together, the sides will be 3 inches and 3 inches.
-All right.
-Sure.
-Now, this is going to be your bottom shelf, and what we're going to do is take each of these little blocks that we made, and we're going to put them right at each of the corners.
So that'll be the start of the shelf.
-Okay.
-All right.
And then, these notches that we made on each of the shelves are where those side rails are going to go that kind of gives it that window frame, that classic London phone booth look.
-Okay.
Sounds good.
-All right.
So first thing we can do is get each of these blocks into position on the corner.
And then, put, maybe, you know, two nails into it so that it stays put.
-Okay.
-Yep, and then, the other corner.
Yeah.
Nice.
All right.
So now we're ready to put each of these corners on.
-All right.
-So hold it up here, and then, now that we've got blocking here, you can basically just put in several nails.
Yeah.
Each of the blocks is going to sit in here, in the corner.
-Mm-hmm.
-We'll do it the same way, nail it into the corner, and then, the next shelf will just sit right down on it.
-Okay.
-All right.
So now that we've got the supports in for the first shelf... -Okay.
-...we can go ahead and put that shelf in place.
-All right.
-Nice.
-Great.
-The steps we just did, we'll just repeat for the rest of the shelves, all the way up until we get to the top.
-All right.
-Yeah.
-Cool.
-The London phone booth was a really cool project, one of my favorites, and, you know, one, it does look very intimidating to build, but most of the materials that were there are all available at any lumber yard, big box store.
And some minor power tools and some, you know, correct measurements, and you should be able to do that no problem.
All right.
So we're about to finish our cap that goes on top of the shelf to complete our phone booth.
-Right.
-Right.
-Yeah.
This is going to really make it look like that London phone booth.
We went ahead and we cut two pieces of plywood that are the same arc for our top, and then we put in a piece of trim around the front and the sides.
We went with a PVC trim.
It's paintable, and it's also really, really flexible, so it makes it easy to get that arc.
You can see that this lauan is only 1/4-inch thick, so that's going to allow us to bend it, but it's not going to make the top look that substantial, so we wanted to give it a little bit more visual appeal with this piece of trim.
-Okay.
-We've gone ahead, and we've marked out lines on this piece of lauan where you're going to be able to actually put the nails in.
So we're going to start on one corner.
We're going to get it fastened, and then, we're just going to roll it down to the other side.
-Okay.
-Sound good?
-Sounds good.
-Yep.
All right.
And then, just keep following it along.
-All right.
So we've got a nail punch here.
We're going to use that to sink all the stables that didn't go all the way in.
-Very simple technology.
-All right.
Well, let's see if we can get this cap to fit on there.
-All right.
-Give it a go.
Way up high.
If you have to, just push the posts in a little bit.
And there it is.
Great.
Well, that cap fits really nicely.
Now that it's on there, we can staple it in place, and then, we can put in the pieces for the sides, which are our last accent piece that's really going to make this look like a phone booth.
So Marley and I have done a decent amount of travel, but we've also wanted to go to Europe, specifically London.
I'm a big fan of Wimbledon, and that's an idea.
We want to go see the tennis tournament there and the city, as well, so having the telephone-booth bookcase is definitely going to be a constant reminder that that was a goal for us to get there one day, either together or as an entire family.
Love the fact that it's going to be in the babies' nursery and also be there as kind of a reminder for a future trip that we want to take.
-All right.
I think that's pretty much it.
-Yep.
Looks like we got a phone booth.
-Yup.
-All right.
Put a little paint on it and call it a day.
-Yeah.
Yeah, just a couple of finishing touches, and this will be ready to hold some books and things.
-All right, good deal.
-Okay.
-Nicely done.
Nicely done.
♪ -Michael, you ready to get crafty?

-Okay.

-Okay.
It's actually pretty simple.
We have these really cute animal wood cutouts, and I've got maps here from where the animals are from.
-All right.
-And we're going to just glue them on there.
-Sounds good.
-Okay.
So basically, what you'd want to do is you want to find the part of the map that you like.
-That looks nice and big.
-Okay.
I think if we kind of just cut along this line right here, that's going to give us a perfect amount.
-Okay.
-Okay.
I'm going to get rid of the excess and take that away.
Okay.
So just double-check your positioning, and we'll put on our gloves, and we'll attach it with our glue.
So... Good, yeah.
Just make sure you get all the edges.
Perfect.
-All right.
-Okay.
So this was about in the middle of our elephant, so we're going to kind of eyeball that and put that in the middle of our elephant.
Okay?
And then, the way we're going to do it to keep out the... We're going to use this just to make sure we don't have any air bubbles.
-All right.
-All right.
I'm going to have you do it and move all that out there, this way.

♪ Continuing on with our travel theme... -Okay.
-We're going to create some hot-air balloons.

There we go.

-So now that it's like that, I'm going to... -Tie it off?

I want to double-knot it.
I just want to make sure it doesn't fall on your baby.

-That would be good.
Wouldn't it?
Okay, right over left, left over right, nice and secure, and it's that easy.
-Great.
-Like that.
All right.
Go for it.
-All right.
-There are so many different, really pretty ribbons that you can get for this project, but since we're hanging it over a crib, and since it's in a baby's room, you do have to be careful about what type of ribbon.
So you don't want anything to fall off of the ribbon, so you don't want any ribbon that has glitter on it.
If it has any patterns, it should be printed on.
It shouldn't be glued on.
Some ribbons are really cute, and they have these little balls stuck to them.
-Mm-hmm.
-Those could come off, so that's why we chose all of these ribbons that are just basically either printed on or have nothing on it but the color.
-Okay.
I guess I would say, of the projects that I worked on with Melissa that Marley hasn't seen, probably the hot-air balloons, I think, is the one that I'm most excited because I believe that's the one she has the least idea about how the final product's going to look.

I can't quite picture how the ribbons tie in, and I can't quite picture Michael using ribbons in a project.
That is not something I've known him to do before.
-Okay.
So here's how we're going to tie our string onto our basket and then our lantern.
So I'm just going to take one piece of the string, and I'm going to tie it onto one side of the basket.
On this side, I'm going to use a slipknot.
-Okay.
-So that way, we can adjust it.
And then, you can help me figure out kind of, you know, the length that you want it.
-Mm-hmm.
-So it can be a little bit higher.
So see how that's adjustable?
-Mm-hmm.
-And then, that way... And it's almost impossible, because we're going to do the other side, to tie them exact, so this way, if we have two adjustable strings, then we can make them even.
-Okay.
Sounds good.
-So we'll do our next string, single knot, twice.
♪ Okay.

-Okay, great.
-And I've already done one to kind of show you what it's going to end up looking like.
-Okay.
-But we've cut it three -quarters of the way down.
-Okay.
-Because once you cut the cardboard, it's kind of frayed.
-Mm-hmm.
-And it doesn't have a finished look, which we want, so we have this edge trim that we got at an automotive store to just kind of give it a polished look.

So lighting was one thing that Michael and I were wondering about with the room because we don't have any overhead lighting automatically in that room, and so coming up with something that fit the theme of travel and also is very functional because it'll help light up the room was great.
-So the great things about globes is they have these great lines all the way around.

We've already cut these pieces of wood to the right size, so they'll just be like this.
And an easy way to do this -- It's sort of hard to put a screw through into here to fasten these two pieces together.
So what we've done is we've made a few more pieces that will be the same outside size, and then, we'll be able to nail it all together.

And we've got these legs cut at an angle, so lining them up here at the edge.
We'll put the point kind of even with the other edge, here.
-Okay.
-So what we want to do, in order to put those on, rather than nailing them, we want them to be a little bit stronger than those small staples, so we're going to use a few screws.
Here's the screw we're going to use.
And it's definitely a good practice to predrill for a screw like that.

This is kind of a fun way to do it.
This is called a T-nut.
What it does is it presses into the wood like this, and then, it's going to be flush on one side.
-Mm-hmm.
-So instead of having, like, a nut on there or something that's kind of out in the way, this is kind of a fun way to do it, and then, just a screw that's the same thread for it, and then, it'll be flush on both sides.
