♪ Wild Kratts Martin: The creature world is home to so many amazing animals.
You just gotta keep on creature adventuring to meet them all.
Hey it's us, the Kratt brothers.
I'm Martin.
I'm Chris.
And today we're getting to know...
Both: Sloth bears.
Sloth bears?
So is it a sloth?
Or a bear?
Well sloths live in the southern hemisphere.
There are only two species, but both of them look pretty similar.
They have long arms with really long, curved claws.
They hang upside down in the trees, moving around, it's their upside down world.
They have long, shaggy fur and they eat plants.
So that's a sloth.
Or is a sloth bear a bear?
Now we all know what a bear looks like, right?
There are about eight different species of bear in the world.
Some live in the northern hemisphere, most of them do, some in the southern hemisphere.
Like the black bear.
They're omnivores, they eat plants and animals.
And those little cubs, they love to play.
And a bigger bear, the brown bear, are really good at catching salmon in the river.
They're super strong and big and brawny.
And then there's the giant panda from China.
Those black and white bears love to eat bamboo.
They specialize in eating pretty much only bamboo.
Hey, that's a lot of great stuff on bears, Chris, but we still have the question, is the sloth bear a sloth?
Or a bear?
We've gotta learn everything we can about the mysterious sloth bear including its creature powers.
Imagine if we had sloth bear powers.
Both: What if?

Namaste, Wild Kratts.
All: Namaste, Mala.
Martin: So where's the sloth bear?
This way.
Aviva: I think we found our answer to the question of sloth or bear.
Koki: Okay, those are definitely bear cubs.
We have to be careful.
Remember, mother bears can be dangerous.
But I don't see their mom anywhere.
What?
No mom?
Then these cubs are in danger.
Yeah, there are predators out here like dholes, tigers and leopards who could snatch up these cubs without mom here to protect them.
And we still don't know why this bear has sloth in its name.
Well, these cubs aren't slow like a sloth.
That can't be why they're called sloth bears.
Hey guys, what are you doing all alone?
A mother bear would never leave her cubs alone.
(gasps) Unless something happened.
Where's mom?
Chris: Hey, I think they see something.
What's that?
Hmm.
Look D D, for Donita Donata.
She must have taken the mother bear.
We've gotta get her back.
We'll need some creature power to save her.
I'd like some sloth bear power.
Please?
Please?
You don't have to convince me.
Let's observe the cubs for their creature powers.
Maybe a little this way.
Hmm-hmm.
Or that way.
Hmm.
(hair dryer blowing) Or more like that.
Ugh, I will get this right.
Chris: Okay, well for starters they have longer hair than most bear cubs.
And they are so cute and funny.
But they're just not showing us any creature powers.
But they are giving me good ideas for names.
I'll call you Shaggo and you Shaggette, yeah.
As fun and cute as they are, if we're gonna get sloth bear powers and rescue their mom, I think we have to observe an adult sloth bear.
Sometimes I see sloth bears at the termite field.
Termite field?
That sounds cool.
Mala, can you take us there?
Yes, it's not far.
All right Wild Kratts, let's go.
It's just through there.
Chris and Martin: Wow.
Martin: Now that's a termite field.
Oh, what's that noise?
Seems very weird and big.
Could it be an elephant?
I'm going in to check it out.
Me too.
Wait up, bro.
Nope, it's not an elephant.
Whoa, that's a big male sloth bear.
Males are bigger than females and its hair is even messier.
(grunting) Koki, Aviva and Mala: Huh?
(grunting) Koki, Aviva and Mala: What?
(grunting) Koki, Aviva and Mala: Ah, we're coming.
Look at those claws.
Martin: Those claws are long and cu rved, just like a sloth's.
Uh-oh, male bears can sometimes kill cubs.
Koki: Well, let's hide them then.
Yes, Shag, Shaggette, you guys hide in here.
Koki: Wow, I bet he got his name from his claws.
Look at that power.
Mala: Yeah, he's after termites.
Good observation, Mala.
What else do you see, bros?
Claws break mound, Chris: expose termite tunnels.
Prehensile lips cover tunnel.
Martin: Nostrils closed and he starts sucking up termites like a vacuum cleaner.
Interesting, but I need more details.
These sloth bear lips are really flexible.
They can wrap around the tunnel entrance and create an air tight seal.
And the bear closes his nostrils so no air could get in and out of the tunnel.
So when the bear sucks in, all the air in the tunnel goes into the bear Aviva: sucking the termites with it.
Suction!
The sloth bear creates suction.
Activating x-ray analysis.
Oh yeah.
Chris: The suction is sucking the termites right into the bear's mouth.
He's definitely using suction.
So he can suck up termites like a vacuum cleaner.
And that's why I'm gonna name you Shaggy Vacuum.
That's one great creature power.
The sloth bear is the only animal we know of that uses the physics of suction to eat termites.
Plus it has bear strength and sloth-like claws.
This is going to be a very interesting creature power suit.
Oh, I can't wait to get my hands on one of those sloth bear power discs.
Activate sloth bear powers.
And to use those powers.
And to be a sloth bear.
(sniffing) He smells something.
Martin: Sloth bears have an excellent sense of smell.
In fact, it's their most highly developed sense of all.
Chris: He could be smelling something much farther away.
Chris and Martin: A tiger!
(growling) (growling) (thuds against tree) Whoa, awesome strength.
The bear uses his strength and those claws as weapons.
Martin: Yeah, great defense against the bigger, heavier tiger.
(both growling) Aviva: Awesome.
That's all I need for my programming.
(computer beeping) Aviva: Sloth bear power programming complete.
Chris and Martin: Insert sloth bear power discs.
Touch sloth bear.
(both chuckle nervously) Well that won't work.
But they will.
(laughs) Both: Touch sloth bear.
Martin and Chris: Activate sloth bear powers.
Wow, look at these claws.
Feel the strength.
Chris: Hey, what's going on?
I know, sloth bear cubs are the only bear cubs in the world that ride on their mom's back.
Cool.
But now we've gotta find Donita and their mom.
(ringing sound) Guys, I've got Donita's coordinates.
Transmitting now.
Both: To the creature rescue!
(skidding to a stop) That way, Chris.
Oh, my turn.
Chris: Hang on.
Oh yeah!
Martin: We're here.
Chris: Donita's plane.
Uh-oh.
(screaming) Martin: Chris look out!
(moaning) Ow.
Should I knock?
(laughs) Nah, you've got sloth bear powers.
Just rip the door off.
Okay.
(metal tears) Sloth bear style.
(gasps) Donita!
Martin: What have you done?
Oh that's just cruel.
Chris: Yeah, you just can't embarrass creatures like that.
What do you two know about style?
You wear the same shirts and shorts everyday.
(both laughing) So?
We activate new creature power suits everyday.
And everyone is different, amazing and cool.
(laughter) Chris: So I don't know what's so funny.
So now that we've got that settled, un-pose beam that mother bear.
She needs to take care of her cubs, Chris: living free and in the wild.
Never.
I worked hard on this hairstyle.
She already undid it once and it's not going to be undone again.
And so you two bothersome brothers can't undo the hairdo, I'm sending the pose beam control to... What?
To a garbage can?
Nope.
The vault.
(lid clanks) Donita: How are you gonna get it?
It's deep, deep down in the belly of my plane in a vault between two thick solid steel walls.
It's impossible to get.
Even your bear strength can't break into that.
(laughing) And besides, you'd better get off my plane or you'll get a hair cut.
(trimmer buzzing) (both screaming) Whew, that was close.
Actually, pretty easy to dodge.
Oh.
Whoa, what happened, bro?
(laughing) (yelling) Don't hurt my bro!
Buzz off!.
You're still never going to un-pose this bear.
You can't reach my controller.
Even bears don't have the power to rip through the solid steel floor of my plane.
We don't need to.
You thinking what I'm thinking, bro?
Oh yeah, we're thinking the same thing.
There are things about sloth bear powers that you just don't understand.
(Dabio gasps) And I just don't care.
Stop them, Dabio.
I've got him.
(both grunting) You're stronger than last time.
It's sloth bear power.
Oo, that's nice.
(Dabio screaming) So Donita, did you know that sloth bears have prehensile lips?
Chris: And nostrils that close.
Giving the sloth bear the power of suction.
(slurping) (air whooshing) Donita: Dabio, Chris has the controller.
What are you doing?
(Dabio screaming) Oh.
Dabio: Oh no, not again.
Martin: Dabio, you just can't beat sloth bear powers.
Ouchie.
Oh Donita.
You might want to get out of here, Donita.
You don't want to get between a mother bear Chris: and her cubs.
Which is where ya are right now.
Pose beam off.
(growling) (screaming) Huh?
Ah, see what I mean?
Dabio, let's go.
Ah, whoa, gotta go.
Ah yeah, mom and babies back together again.
Martin: That's what I call riding bare back.
Living free and in the wild.
And we can deactivate because that's-- Both: A creature mission accomplished.
Donita: She can keep her shagginess.
(girls laughing) Let us in on the joke.
What's so funny?
Aviva and Koki: Your hair.
Huh?
(laughs) That's working for ya, bro.
You should keep yours for the next adventure.
Maybe I will.
(both laugh) (laughing) So that is the sloth bear.
An amazing creature.
And definitely a bear.
With some sloth-like features.
And check it out, Chris saw sloth bears in the wild.
Oh yeah, I was in India.
Chris: And it was in the southwestern region where I found them.
It looks like a mother sloth bear with two older cubs.
Foraging away for termites and ants.
Chris: Letting their nose lead the way, they can smell where the nests of ants and termites are.
And when they find them, those three inch claws are the perfect tools for getting at their food source.
Listen to that.
(slurping) That is a sound that only comes from a sloth bear because sloth bears have an incredible suction creature power.
They have special lips that are really mobile and can form a perfect seal around an ant nest.
And they can also close their nostrils so that no air can seep in.
And they don't have any front teeth.
All those features give the sloth bear a perfect suction Chris: for sucking up thousands of ants in a single sitting.
Oh, wow.
So suction is one of the sloth bear's amazing creature powers.
And check it out, you use suction every time you sip out of a straw.
Now it's time for a Kratt brothers' experiment.
We're gonna test our powers of suction with the Sloth Bear Challenge.
Martin: Let's go.
These marshmallows are the termites, okay?
And Chris and I are gonna have a race to see who can catch the most termites with suction in 15 seconds.
Ready?
Both: On your mark, get set, go.
Yes, I win!
No you don't!
Yes, one, two, three, four, five, Martin: six, seven, eight, nine.
Chris: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
Both: It's a tie!
(laughing) Chris: I can't believe we tied.
Keep on creature adventuring.
We'll see ya on the creature trail.
(upbeat music) Chris: To find out more about cool animals.
Martin: And collect your own Wild Kratts Creature Powers... Chris: Go to the Wild Kratt's website-- Martin: At pbskids.org.
Both: We'll see ya there.
