Welcome to my web comments on the Saturday Night Cinema broadcasts of “Smoke Signals” from 1998.
I'm Mikayla Daniels here to share a bit more about the film, in a bit of a meta moment in the film.
During a flashback, Victor's father asks him who his favorite Indian is, and Victor replies, nobody.
Gary Farmer, who plays Victor's father in this film, starred as an Indian named “Nobody” in the movie “Dead Man” from 1995.
Lead actor Adam Beach, who plays Victor, is one of the most well known indigenous actors, along with the previously mentioned Gary Farmer.
And he has over 100 credits as an actor.
He's been in countless films and TV shows with one of my favorite roles of his is when he played a detective on the series Law and Order SVU in 2007 to 2008.
Actress Elaine Mills was in the 1990s Alaskan set series Northern Exposure, which is a show I both loved and hated growing up in Alaska at the time.
I hated it because they got so much wrong about living in Alaska, but loved it because it was really the first time the state was the setting for a TV series.
Even to this day, most TV series that are set in Alaska are the so-called reality shows, and they never seem to get the vibe of Alaskans quite right.
Now, Elaine is not just an amazing actor.
She can also apparently drive backwards.
Normally, a stunt double would be used for a scene like that, but because she was so proficient at it, they didn't use one.
And what you see on screen is all her.
The film was well received by critics and audiences loved it as well.
Despite a relatively limited release, opening on only five screens domestically, Smoke Signals Box Office more than tripled its production budget.
In addition to recognition within the indigenous community and beyond, Smoke Signals earned the Audience Award for drama and the Filmmaker's Trophy for drama for the director at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival.
The film also earned special recognition for excellence in filmmaking from the National Board of Review.
I hope you enjoyed my extended comments on Smoke Signals, and be sure to look around our Facebook page and ksps.org.
