Snowstorm vs Hot Tent - Camping Alone Overnight in the Wild with Morels, Grilled Cheese & more
1/11/2025 | 22m 18sVideo has Closed Captions
I camped in another snowstorm with my hot tent and grilled cheese.
We had another snowstorm in the mountains of southwestern Pennsylvania in Somerset County, so I packed up my smaller hot tent and went into the woods. I dragged the tent and all my gear out with my sled and found a good spot to set up. We ended up getting a lot of snow overnight into the next day. I cooked some morels that I had dehydrated, along with some grilled cheese.

We got some good news.
We're getting a snowstorm tonight and tomorrow.
At least that's what I'm hoping.
And as usual, we are headed up the mountain because that's where the nastiest weather is going to be.
And to find a good place to camp out, set up my hot tent.
It's getting kind of late, so we have to find a camping spot pretty quick before it starts.
It is currently 17 degrees.
Just got to find a good place to set up the tent.
Lots of dead fallen wood here.
That's what we want.
It's supposed to get a lot colder tonight and tomorrow.
I'm going to need a lot of firewood to stay warm from what the forecast said.
It could be a really bad storm.
Could be just a normal snowstorm.
So either way, we're going to prepare for the worst.
Something about camping in really bad weather.
I love it.
We got the wood stove, a lot of food.
Not going to go hungry.
Got a sleeping bag, a bunch of other tools and supplies.
Survival gear, of course.
We'll be in good shape.
This is a tent from RBM outdoors.
It's called the UP-2 mini.
I'll put a link to it and everything in the video description.
It's a smaller version of the other one I have.
It's brand new.
My first time using this.
So I'm just going to lay down the insulated floor first.
We're going to see how this tent holds up against the snow and cold.
Stovepipe out of here.
I'll just get a fire going in that out here and let it burn for an hour before I put it in the tent.
Burn off all the factory grease.
It's on.
See what we got here.
A little multi-tool, Big multi-tool.
I love these things.
That's not going anywhere.
So now we got to put the wood stove in.
So we're good to go now.
It's getting chilly out here.
Got to get some firewood cut now and split.
I'm going to see how long the firebox is so I know how long to cut my pieces.
So it goes to about right here to about the B. I'll cut them a little shorter.
This tree over here looks good.
Possibly to make sure its not rotten.
The snow made it look a lot bigger.
Gets a little bigger over here.
So this whole falling tree should last me for a while.
I was hoping this wasn't rotten.
It makes that sound.
I know It's dry and solid It's my measuring stick.
Because you don't want to cut all your logs and then find out that they're too long for the firebox.
Don't ask me how I know.
See, I learn things the hard way myself.
So you guys don't have to.
That's what I'm here for.
Break time.
Oh, firewood warms you twice.
Well, I probably warms you up more than twice as you got to cut it, split it, stack it.
It's a lot of work.
Wish I had a snack right now.
I have a lot of food in the backpack.
I just have to cook it all.
I should have brought some jerky or something, but I'm fresh out.
Not sure when exactly the snow supposed to start up.
Well, this break time is over.
I should probably get back to it.
I don't last a while.
See what the temperature is.
It's about 13 14°F.
That is, its getting down there.
I'll use this one as my chopping block.
I like to get as much of the snow off as I can when it gets warm in there.
All the snow is going to melt.
You'll get all wet in there.
I'm going to take these sides off.
I like to see the fire through the glass that's on the inside.
You got to be able to see the fire.
Fat wood shaved up.
My Zippo works a lot better than BIC lighters in the cold.
Then I'll just put this on top.
Im ginna stack all the wood next to the stove.
That way, as the fire burns, it will dry out all the wood, and I'm ready to burn it.
It'll be nice and dry.
It's warming up in here already.
Getting a little dried out here.
Now, here is the synopsis.
And axis of heavy snow is expected late tonight into early Monday, with a wintry mix possible in the reaches of West Virginia.
The highest snowfall amounts will be south of Pittsburgh, where a winter storm warning is in effect.
See what the temperature is?
About 80 degrees.
Nice.
Fire is going really good.
The as soon as it dies down, it will cool down in here.
Looks like the snow has begun.
Beautiful.
I'm going to go melt some snow.
My drinking water here.
Got a little frozen.
Snow is going to be for cooking.
This is for drinking until this runs out.
And then I'll have to melt snow and drink that.
Unless I go down to the creek to get some water, I'll start out with some beef stroganoff.
And beef stew.
I don't know if it's this good or if I'm just starving.
Everything always tastes better out here.
Now for the beef stew.
This is my favorite mountain house meal.
Get a good bit of firewood to last me all night and into tomorrow.
See how it's looking out there.
Oh, that's some heavy snow.
Im gonna get some more snow in here.
So I have a little water ready for tomorrow.
Let's get back inside.
Getting cold out here.
Sleeping pad.
My pillow.
Sleeping bag.
Now Im going to make room for this.
That's comfy.
Got my carbon monoxide alarm.
Put some of these bigger ones on for overnight.
Stays nice and warm in here.
Well, I'm going to bed.
I'll see you guys tomorrow.
It's a little chilly when I woke up, but it wasn't bad at all.
The fire had been out for a little while.
Right now it's about 56 degrees.
As soon as I get this fire going, it's going to heat up in here fast.
I don't sleep very good when it's real warm anyway, so.
Still snowing.
At about a foot of snow on the ground or so.
I did a little hiking this morning.
Just seeing what I could find.
Some deer tracks here and there, but not much else.
Hung out in the tent by the fire for a little while.
I'm going to go down to the stream over here and gather some water.
Takes a little too long to melt snow, so this will be easier.
It's not really deep here, so I scoop more in with my hands.
Oh, that's cold.
Melt some snow in this one.
Have some potato soup.
I dehydrated some dehydrated morel mushrooms to go with that.
Some grilled cheese.
It's going to be my drinking water, so I'm just going to put it out here.
Let it cool down.
That's boiling.
If you've never had morel mushrooms, you're missing out.
One of the best tasting mushrooms there is.
Put them in this hot water, and I'll just take this off and let it sit till they rehydrate.
Now I'll put my soup in the hot water.
And this usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes to rehydrate.
I have another bag of soup here.
I'll add.
Added a little more water to the stew and we're going to bake some potatoes.
And add some salt and pepper.
Im gonna sauté these for about 5 or 6 minutes.
keep them moving It smells so good.
And it should be good there.
So good.
I'm going to put some of these in my soup.
A little taste of spring.
We have morel potato soup.
Butters too cold to spread.
So we're going to do it this way.
Kind of a mess with shredded cheese.
But it's all I had.
It's still works.
Im going to put lots of cheese on there.
I think I'll put some morels on this.
Morel stuffed grilled cheese.
I highly recommend.
I can't wait till spring.
Find some more morels.
They can be very hard to find, but they're worth all the miles I have to put on looking for them.
Check on my potatoes.
They're looking good.
One of the easiest things to make camping.
I'm going to pack everything up and get out of here.
Usually I like to leave before dark, but I know this area really well.
So I won't have any problems finding my way back to the truck.
And dump this outside.
All right.
Time to start taking everything down.
Starting with the wood stove.
I have to do now is just take all the guidelines down and the stakes out.
One thing I like about this tent.
It's a lot easier to drag around the woods than the bigger one.
The other one's more spacious, but this one's a lot lighter and more compact.
I made it.
All right, let's get out of here.
Well, that was fun.
It's cold.
We got a lot of snow.
I'm happy about it.
It was a good trip.
So thanks for watching and join me in my next one.
