Sounds Around Town with Cosmic Rhythm has been a real treat, and even more of a treat is talking to a couple of members of the band right now.
Hey guys!
Hi.
Hey, how's it going?
Tell me, how did Cosmic Rhythm form?
It's actually, it's a collective kind of a grouping of friends that had different backgrounds with each other, but all kind of a common connection in one way or another through music, but not only that, Eric and Nick Viglione went to high school together.
Eric left town for several years and then came back and they kind of formed a bond as far as, "Hey, let's play some music together."
Bring myself and Chris together, we went to high school together.
Stan.
Our kids are friends.
Yeah, our kids are mutual friends, so it really is.
Josh, his wife is my cousin.
I mean, so there's all these little connections that kind of brought us all together.
Obviously playing music is the biggest thing.
We're a family band.
Yeah, absolutely.
Yeah.
Tell me about some of them artists you like to perform their songs.
Yeah, you know, we listen to a lot of music.
I think one thing that's true of all of us, regardless of our background as musicians is we're very good listeners and we've got a really wide palette that we have brought to the band together.
So Mike listens to a lot of newer music as well as classic rock.
I listen to a lot of classic rock and then a lot of expanded jam bands.
Stan has come at it with some jazz influence and a studious perspective, he's a big vinyl guy.
And what ends up happening then as a result of bringing our music collections together is, some of the guys have been in bands for 30 years.
Some of us have been in bands for 10, and some of us have been playing songs we don't wanna play anymore.
And so this band was kind of formed around friendships and common music tastes.
And we thought, give the people what we want.
And if it takes root, then folks will hear some of the deeper cuts from records.
We're not really the band that plays the top 40 or even like the most recognizable song from any of the bands you might recognize tonight.
So we'll play a Grateful Dead number.
We've played a Led Zeppelin number.
We played a lot of Led Zeppelin actually, but I don't know if we play any tonight.
The...
Some are our original music too.
Three of the songs we play tonight are songs that are influenced by what we've listened to.
What I was saying though was that rather than play the song that everybody knows, we play the song that inspired us 'cause we knew that song.
And so it, folks will come in hear a three hour performance and they'll be like, "I knew like half the songs tonight.
That was great."
And then we kind of feel a part of expanding people's horizons within the bands that we're aware of.
But then also, kind of just breaking up the monotony of some of what happens with cover bands and semi original bands.
Can you tell me what it is that draws you to each particular style of music?
Just a lot of it's just energy and a lot of it though, there's just memories, songs that, you know that kind of bring up past memories and of different places.
And that's such a beautiful thing about music is it's, it is, it's just this kind of audio tapestry, you know, that's in your mind that over time.
But yeah, it's so nice to collectively with the guys because they do bring a lot of different genres to the table, so.
It keeps it interesting.
Hopefully, hopefully what happens is that our mixture of knowing a little bit deeper catalog of a band and trying to bring out a song that we know people will interact with.
So, you know, sometimes we're listening band, sometimes we're a dancing band.
Sometimes we're an environmental band.
Sometimes we're a party band.
And it kind of depends on what part of the set we're in and who has come to enjoy it.
A lot of our, we have all been in Erie for 30 years.
And so, you know how Erie is.
And so when we perform at a local venue, a lot of different folks come together and they realize they know each other too even though there's seven members of the band with seven separate histories.
Nice thing about getting into our middle ages here, is folks are getting social again.
And so we've become an outlet for a wide group of folks whose children now are independent and who are professionals and who have remained in town.
Just wanna get out.
And just having a good time, I suppose essentially is a celebration of music and friendship.
So when somebody comes to a Cosmic Rhythm performance, what can they expect for an experience?
Oh, you're definitely going to hear some songs that you may know the artists, but not necessarily the song.
I mean, we are not going to be a straight forward cover band in that aspect, but yeah, it's just going to be a very easygoing, good time.
And in a lot of ways, it, and just like Eric was saying, depending on the venue and depending on what we want to bring to the audience.
Yeah.
You're going to see a pretty eclectic mix of music, and definitely some toe tapin' times too, for sure.
Well, I am ready for some more toe tapin' time, so we're going to head back to their performance.
Take that stage.
MIKE: Thank you.
ERIC: Thanks.
So here comes, this is another one of our originals.
