We don't write a lot of dark songs too much anymore.

I hope your enjoying Sounds Around Town with Jay B and the Vigils.
I know I am.
So we pulled a couple of the band members aside.
We've got JB here, and I just wanna know how the project formed?
Oh, um, well.
I started doing like acoustic stuff to try and change gears probably 10 years ago.
Which was about the time that my daughter was born.
She's now 10.
She's sitting over there with her green hair looking cool.
So I played like hard rock and metal for a lot of years.
Davy was actually in a band, Dead Loft with me.
He played bass and I just did a lot of screaming and singing and stuff.
And then I decided I just wanted to kinda mellow out 'cause I found out that having a metal band practice in your basement is not very conducive to having a small child take a nap upstairs so.
You know, we all kinda mellow out after a while.
So that's kinda changing gears I guess.
So talk to me about some of your original work.
Who were some of the artists that you get your inspiration from?
Well, I kinda go all over the board 'cause I'm from southern Erie County.
I'm actually I grew up in North Springfield.
So I grew up on the lake.
And my folks Earl and Sarah, Big Earl, they worked over in Conneaut .
And we went to school at like Northwestern, but we did a lot of stuff over there.
You know what I mean 'cause my mom was a special ed teacher.
Now she's an administrator and next year, she's gonna retire.
My dad the same thing, worked at the same factory for like 40 years so we were really kinda grown up in a lake community, which is surrounded by a bunch of summer camps.
But we also were kind of influenced by a lot of country music.
But like the old school, good country music.
Like Johnny Cash, Buck Owens and stuff like that.
So a lot of the stuff that I write has a very, like I created a small little EP with only like five songs just to see if I could do it on my own.
And I called it, "Last Summer on Old Lake".
Which is the name of the road I grew up.
And all these songs, I'll be performing some of them that were on that.
They have a lot more of like a summer time, lake feel.
But then a lot of the other stuff that we're playing tonight is got a very more Americana feel.
I love all kinds of music so I'm influenced by a lot of it.
Right now, I'm a huge John Prine fan.
And it's kind of amazing because my mother kind of she had a couple John Prine albums on tape or whatever and it's not until like as an adult I kind a like delved into what he had.
And it's beautifully well written.
He knows how to turn a phrase, put it that way.
But also growing up, I was also a huge synth pop fan.
Which is kinda weird because like later on we started playing metal together.
And we're like Alice in Chains, and Pantera and all this kind of stuff.
And I'm a huge Cure fan.
I love Robert Smith, everything that he does.
So some of the stuff is kind of influenced that way.
But then other stuffs kinda influenced like CCR and Tom Petty.
All that type of stuff.
So just kinda trying to put my own spin on all the stuff I grew up listening to and at the same time, not intentionally trying to distance myself from the metal scene that Erie used to have.
I really love playing, made a lot of friends over 20 years of doing it.
But this is more rootsy.
I mean honestly, I live in the county.
I'm in Southern Erie County.
So I look out my kitchen window and I see a soy bean field.
And I look out my picture window in my living room and I see a wheat field.
It's just tractors up and down the road all the time.
At the same time, I also wanna keep it like true to form country music, if that's a thing I guess.
I'm also a huge Jason Isbel fan.
So like his song writing trying to create something.
I'm sure I don't do it as well as any of these folks, but I try.
When you take your solo work and bring it into your band, how does the composition change?
I just kind write songs and they just kinda fill in whatever I do.
Those change a lot though.
Yeah, I mean.
Solo stuff compared to the whole band stuff, there is a lot different feel to the songs.
I play solo more than anything else.
I mean, Alex, who's gonna be playing electric tonight, he actually plays bass with me more often because Davy just doesn't have the time to do it.
So a lot of times we'll go out playing.
And then my friends, James and Sue, Susan does the back up vocals and James is gonna be doing the extra percussion.
But normally, he plays a cone when we go out and play.
And then Donny and Davy are kinda like a package deal.
So Donny's the drum player.
So like the Vigils is actually just the three of us and we've added the other three.
And we kinda haven't come up with a real name yet.
But we're kinda just going under the pseudonym of The Vigils.
But I think we're gonna call it the Boondocks.
'Cause it's like the six of us together.
It's just something different but we'll see what happens.
Thank you so much.
JAY: Thank you.
We're gonna get back to Sound Around Town, with Jay B and the Vigils.
