If you look up at night, you might see what's called a shooting star.
That's actually a little piece of a meteor coming through our atmosphere.
My name is Rachel Smith.
I'm an astronomer here at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.
A meteorite is a piece of the larger rock from space that came through our atmosphere and hit the surface of Earth.
Meteorites are the oldest material we have from the formation of the solar system.
These are rocks from space, and they're the oldest rocks we have that tell us about how our solar system began.
So when you touch a meteorite, or you hold a meteorite, or look at a meteorite, you're looking back in time four billion years, at least, to the beginning of our solar system, and that's what makes them so cool.
