STATISTICS SHOW THAT ABOUT 90% OF STUDENT ATHLETES REPORT SOME SPORTS RELATED INJURY.
AND THEY COVER THE SPECTRUM, FROM LESS SERIOUS ONES LIKE STRAINS AND SPRAINS ALL THE WAY UP TO CONCUSSIONS, TORN TENDONS, DISLOCATIONS, YOU NAME IT.
AS A SPORTS FAN, IT'S NOT UNCOMMON TO WITNESS THESE INJURIES IN REAL TIME - WHETHER FROM THE STANDS OR ON OUR TV.
BUT TONIGHT, WE WANT TO TAKE AN EVEN CLOSER LOOK, THROUGH THE EYES OF THE COACHES ON THE SIDELINES, THE DOCTORS IN THE EXAM ROOM, AND THE THERAPISTS WORKING TO GET THESE ATHLETES BACK TO FULL STRENGTH.
LET'S MEET OUR DREAM TEAM, THEY ARE: MR. STEVE YARNELL, A LONGTIME LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE BASKETBALL COACH AND CURRENT ADJUNCT PROFESSOR AT SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY DR. MICHAEL WIESE, AN ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON AT ORTHOPEDICS EAST AND CURRENT ORTHOPEDIC CONSULTANT TO LEMOYNE COLLEGE AND DR. THEY SPOKE WITH DR. ANDREW GETZIN, WHO HAS BEEN THE TEAM HEAD DOC FOR USA TRIATHLON FOR 5 YEARS AND IS PIONEERING A NEW PROCEDURE ONLY BEING PERFORMED AT A FEW PLACES AROUND THE WORLD.

MY NAME IS ANDREW GETZIN, CLINICAL DIRECTOR OF SPORTS MEDICINE AT CAYUGA MEDICAL CENTER IN ITHACA, NEW YORK.
I'VE BEEN THE HEAD TEAM DOCTOR FOR USA TRY TRIATHLON FOR A FEW YEARS.
I'M IF UNIVERSITY THAT I SEE GOOD PEOPLE.
THEY KNOW WHEN THEY COME INTO OUR OFFICE THAT WE CARE, THAT WE WANT TO HELP THEM ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS.
WE GET A LOT OF REFERRALS FROM PEOPLE OF ALL AGES BUT PARTICULARLY ADOLESCENTS WHO HAVE DIFFICULTY BREATHING WITH EXERCISE.
HISTORICALLY IF SOMEONE GOES TO THEIR CLINICIANS AND THEY SAY THEY CAN'T BREATHE DURING EXERCISE, THEY GET DIAGNOSED WITH AS MA.
THE REALITY IS MANY OF THESE YOUNG PEOPLE OR OLDER PEOPLE MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE ASTHMA.
ONE OF THE OTHER DIAGNOSIS THEY MAY HAVE IS SOMETHING CALLED EXERCISE INDUCED LARYNGAL OBSTRUCTION.
WHERE THE LARYNX IS AN ORGAN AGAIN THE NOSE AND THE KNOWTH AND IT'S DYNAMIC, IT CHANGES SHAPE WITH EXERCISE AND YOU KNOW, WHEN WE EXERCISE, WE NEED MORE AIR TO GO TO THE WORKING MUSCLES, MORE OXYGEN SO WE HOPE THE UPPER AREA WOULD INCREASE THEIR AREA AND UNFORTUNATELY, SOME PEOPLE GET A CLOSURE.
WE USED TO CALL THIS PROBLEM VOCAL CHORD DYSFUNCTION.
BECAUSE THE VOCAL CORDS SIT ON THE LARYNX AND WE THOUGHT THAT WAS THE PROBLEM BUT WE REALIZE THAT IT'S ACTUALLY PROBABLY ABOVE THE VOCAL CORDS AND ONLY WAY WE KNOW THAT IS BY VISUALIZING THE UPPER AIR WAY DURING EXERCISE.
>> LOOK TO THE LEFT.
AWESOME.
WE HAVE THE CAPABILITIES TO TAKE A SMALL CAMERA ON THE END OF A SCOPE, PASS IT THROUGH THE SNOWS NOSE TO THE UPPER LARYNX AND ABLE TO VISUALIZE SOMEONE'S UPPER AIR WAYS TO EXERCISE.
THERE ARE VERY FEW PLACES IN THE WORLD THAT DO THAT.
WONDERFUL.
NICELY DONE.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT'S VERY IMPORTANT IS THAT SOMEBODY IS HAVING SYMPTOMS WITH EXERCISE, WHETHER IT BE ABDOMINAL PAIN, CHEST PAIN, SHORTNESS OF BREATH, YOU HAVE TO SEE THEM EXERCISE TO PROVOKING IT.
ADD THE COMPLEXITY OF VISUALIZING THEIR UPPER AIR WAY AS WELL DURING EXERCISE.
I CAN LOOK AT A TEST BUT THE MOST DATA I GLEAN IS BY LOOKING AT MY PATIENTS WHILE THEY'RE EXERCISING AND SEE HOW THEY RESPOND.
>> KEEP WALKING.
BOTH HANDS ON THE TREAD MILL.
JUST WALKING.
>> PARTICULARLY FOR OUR PATIENTS WHO ARE THAT YOUNGER POPULATION, THE UPPER AIR WAY PROBLEM, THEY MAY HAVE SOMETHING CALLED STRIDER OR WHEN THEY'RE BREATHING IN, THEY GET A HIGH PITCHED LIKE THEY'RE HIVE AND THEY'RE PANICKY.
SO IT IS AN INTERESTING PROBLEM BECAUSE THERE IS A LOT OF WORRY ABOUT A PATIENT AND THE FAMILY AND PEOPLE AROUND THE INDIVIDUAL WHEN THEY'RE HAVING AN ATTACK BUT THE REALITY IS THEY'RE OKAY.
MOST OF THE TOMB I TELL THEM THEY'RE GOING TO BE OKAY.
AND I THINK RESETTING EXPECTATION IS WHAT WE DO IN A NICE WAY.
OBVIOUSLY THE GOAL IS TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT WHERE THEY'RE AT BUT TELL THEM THEY'RE SAFE.
LOTS OF PEOPLE IN THE TREAD MILL AND PEOPLE WE FIND WITH CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE OR LUNG DISEASE OR OTHER PROBLEMS BUT THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME IT IS THIS AND THE GUIDANCE OF HOW TO TAKE THE DATA WE LEARN FROM THE EXERCISE TEST AND TEACH THEM HOW THEY SHOULD EXERCISE PROPERLY AND THE SAME CONCEPTS OF EXERCISE APPLY TO 20-YEAR-OLD COLLEGE SWIMMER TO THE 45-YEAR-OLD MASTERS TRIATHLETE TO THE 80-YEAR-OLD WHO WANTS TO INCREASE HIS ABILITY TO EXERCISE.
PEOPLE, THEY THINK THERE MUST BE SOME PATHOLOGY OR SOME PROBLEM, BECAUSE WHEN I WAS-- 15 YEARS AGO I COULD DO THAT WITH EASE AND NOW IT'S GETTING HARDER WITH FIVE POUNDS HEAVIER AND 15 YEARS OLDER.
I SEE PEOPLE FOR CONSULTATION.
I LOVE THE VISITS BECAUSE WE CAN LOOK AT THE INDIVIDUAL AND SAY WHAT ARE THE OPPORTUNITIES THERE AS FAR AS WHAT DOES HE OR SHE HAVE ACCESS TO, WHETHER IT BE EQUIPMENT OR TIME.
WHAT ARE THEIR CONSTRAINTS.
WHAT DO THEY LIKE TO DO?
SO THERE ARE CENTERS LIKE THIS KIND OF SPROUTING UP THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES BECAUSE COMMUNITIES ARE UNDERSTANDING THAT EXERCISE AND WELLNESS ARE IMPORTANT.
IF YOU LOOK AT THE BUILDING AS A WHOLE, ON THE FIRST FLOOR WE HAVE A GYM AND WELLNESS CENTER THAT HAS PEOPLE ALL AGES IN THERE AND ALL LEVELS OF FITNESS THERE.
WE HAVE PHYSICAL THERAPY ON THE FIRST FLOOR, WE HAVE A CARDIAC REHAB ON THE FIRST FLOOR, SECOND FLOOR IS A SPA.
THIRD FLOOR IS A CENTER CALLED THE CENTER FOR HEALTHY LIVING WHICH IS DESIGNED TO HELP PEOPLE WITH WEIGHT LOSS MANAGEMENT AND STRESS MANAGEMENT, SMOKING CESSATION.
THE FOURTH FLOOR, CARDIOLOGY AND THE FIFTH FLOOR IS SPORTS MEDICINE IECHTS REALLY DESIGNED TO KEEP PEOPLE HEALTHY AND WELL THROUGHOUT THE CONTINUING OF THEIR AGES.
AND EXERCISE IS THE BEST MEDICINE.
WE WANT TO KEEP PEOPLE DOING THAT AND THAT'S WHAT WE ARE HERE TO DO.
>> TALKING ABOUT THE BASIC PRINCIPLES HE APPLIED IN HIS WORK.
HOW ABOUT FROM YOUR POINT OF VIEW.
WHAT ARE THE BASIC PRINCIPLES THAT MIGHT APPLY TO BOTH HELPING ATHLETES REACH PEAK PERFORMANCE AND RECOVER FROM AN INJURY?
>> IT IS INTERESTING TO SEE WHAT THE DOCTOR IS WORKING ON THERE.
ANYTHING THAT CAN ENHANCE AND IMPROVE THE SAFETY AND CHANCE FOR ATHLETES TO ACHIEVE AND MOVE TOWARDS THEIR OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE LEVELS IS REALLY GOING TO BE A BIG KEY.
SAFETY CERTAINLY IS THE FIRST PART.
SECONDLY, WITH STUDENT ATHLETES, TO TEACH THEM THE PROPER ATTITUDE AND HABITS ABOUT HOW TO PROPERLY WARM THEMSELVES UP, HOW TO BUILD FLEXIBILITY IN THEIR NEWS CUE LA TUR THROUGH RANGE OF MOTION, SPORTS SPECIFIC.
AND Dr. SUE OVER HERE TAKES PEOPLE IN THAT DIRECTION, YOU KNOW, IT'S A WHOLE NEW BALL GAME.
>> HOW IMPORTANT IS THE TRAINING STAFF AND THE TEAM DOC, LIKE WE'VE GOT THESE GUYS HERE?
HOW IMPORTANT IS THAT TO ATHLETES PERFORMANCE AND RECOVERY?
>> IT'S CRITICAL.
I LOOK AT IT WITH THE STUDENT ATHLETE IN THE CENTER, AS A COACH, I'M WORKING WITH THEM, TRYING TO TEACH THEM HOW TO APPROACH AND BE A PROPER ATHLETE AND DO THINGS THAT TEACH THE RIGHT HABITS BUT THEN IF THERE IS AN INJURY, I DEFER TO SUE AND TO, YOU KNOW, Dr. WIESE.
>> SPEAKING OF, WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON SPORTS INJURIES?
>> SO WE ARE DOING STUDENT ATHLETES.
WE MIGHT AS WELL-- THERE WAS A RECENT STUDDIE FROM THE NCAA, AND IT WAS VERY INTERESTING.
SO COMPETITIVE INJURIES WERE FOOTBALL FOR THE MALES AND SOCCER FOR THE FEMALES.
OVERALL INJURIES WERE WRESTLING AND GYMNASTICS BECAUSE OF THEIR PRACTICE TIME AND PRACTICE HABITS AND I THINK THE NCAA HAS DONE VERY WELL CHANGING THE PRACTICE PATTERNS OF FOOTBALL AND SOCCER, NOT SO MUCH WRESTLING AND GYMNASTICS.
BUT THOSE ARE THE MOST INJURIES.
>> WHAT KIND OF INJURIES ARE THE MOST DIFFICULT TO RECOVER FROM?
>> ANYTHING POST SURGICAL IS VERY DIFFICULT FOR THE ATHLETE TO MENTALLY BUT AT THAT POINT THEY KNOW THEY'RE GOING TO BE SUGGEST OUT FOR A SET PERIOD OF TIME BECAUSE THEY'VE TALKED TO THEIR SURGEON FOR A PARTICULAR SURGERY.
MORE FRUSTRATING ARE THE OVER USE INJURIES AND TENDONITIS THAT REQUIRE REST PERIOD AND TIME OUT OF THE SPORT.
AND THEY CAN BE LONG RECOVERIES DEPENDING ON HOW THE REST PERIOD GOES AND THE RECOVERY PERIOD GOES.
>> I JUST GOT ONE OF THOSE ON SATURDAY.
I WAS ON THE TREAD MILL AND DID TOO MUCH AND SUNDAY I WOKE UP AND SAID HMM, HOW DO YOU HELP AN ATHLETE RECOVER FROM THAT KIND OF INJURY AND KEEP A POSITIVE MENTALITY?
>> IS THAT A SPORTS INJURY?
>> WELL, I GUESS IT'S AN INTERACTION, RIGHT?
THE MIND-BODY INTERACTION.
WHO WOULD LIKE TO ADDRESS THAT?
HOW DO YOU HELP SOMEBODY KEEP A POSITIVE MENTALITY?
>> I'LL ADDRESS THAT A LITTLE BIT.
AS A MATTER OF FACT, JUST THE OTHER DAY, I SPOKE WITH ONE OF THE STUDENT ATHLETES IN MY ATHLETES EDUCATION FUTURE COACHING CLASS AT S.U.
THIS YOUNG LADY THIS LAST WEEK HAD HER THIRD ACL ME NIS SURGERY AND SHE SENT ME THE EMAIL.
SHE SAID SHE WAS GOING TO MISS CLASS AND COULD I TELL THEN WELL, I BETTER CHECK IN.
IT'S LIKE ANYTHING ELSE.
AS A POSITIVE TEACHER COACH, HAVE YOU TO BUILD TRUSTING RELATIONSHIPS AND YOU HAVE TO PUT YOUR STUDENT ATHLETES FIRST.
YOU SHOW THEM THAT YOU CARE, I THINK THAT GOES A LONG WAY TOWARDS, THEY CERTAINLY WANT TO GET BETTER WHEN THEY'VE HAD AN INJURY BUT IT'S EASY TO GET DOWN, TO GET A LITTLE DEPRESSED AND SO WE TALKED ABOUT SOME THINGS, SPENT ABOUT 25 MINUTES ON THE PHONE WITH HER AND REMINDED HER THAT, HEY, YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE BEEN MENTALLY TOUGH TO GET THROUGH THIS AT THIS POINT.
YOU ARE AMAZING.
IN THE FUTURE, WHEN YOU START REHABBING EVERYTHING, YOU ARE GOING TO COME OUT OF THIS EVEN STRONGER AND BE ABLE TO DO THE KIND OF THINGS THAT IS GOING TO TAKE TIME AND HAVE YOU TO UNDERSTAND THAT GOOD THINGS TAKE TIME.
>> I WOULD ASSUME YOU ARE THE GUY WHO IS OFTEN CALLED ON TO MAKE THE CALL ABOUT, IS THIS ATHLETE READY TO GO BACK TO THE PLAYING FIELD.
HOW DO YOU MAKE THAT CALL?
>> THAT'S A TOUGH CALL, BUT ACTUALLY AS I MENTIONED BEFORE, THE TRIAD.
>> THE THREE OF YOU.
>> THE THREE OF US.
YES.
>> YOU WORK TOGETHER AS A TEAM.
>> A TEAM EXACTLY.
THAT'S A WAY WAY TO SAY IT AND SUE WOULD BE GETTING SOME DIRECTION FROM FROM WIESE IF THERE WERE A SURGERY INVOLVED OR SOME TYPE OF INJURY THAT HE HAD TO ADDRESS.
ESPECIALLY TODAY IN THE AREA OF CONCUSSION.
YOU KNOW, CONCUSSION PROTOCOL SO I CAN'T MAKE THAT DECISION, ALL RIGHT?
MANY SCHOOLS HAVE PHYSICAL TRAINERS AND THAT'S CRITICAL BECAUSE THEY'RE INTERACTING WITH SUE AND MIKE.
>> SO YOU GET THE DATA FROM THEIR TRAINER AND Dr. WIESE OR SUE MIGHT WEIGH IN AND SAY HERE IS WHERE THE PERSON IS IN TERMS OF THEIR RECOVERY AND THEN YOU HAVE TO TAKES A CALL.
>> IT'S MOSTLY ON SUE'S PART.
>> I JUST CALL AND ASK HIS PERMISSION TO RELEASE HIM ACTUALLY: THANKFULLY IN THE FIELD OF PHYSICAL THERAPY, WE SEE PEOPLE TWO AND THREE TIMES A WEEK.
WE WORK ON THEIR FUNCTIONAL LEVEL AND KNOW THEIR STRENGTH LEVEL AND IF YOU HAVE A GOOD TEAM LIKE WE ARE TALKING ABOUT HERE AND YOU HAVE A PHYSICIAN YOU CAN WORK WITH AS GREAT AS Dr. WIESE, YOU CAN SAY I THINK ATHLETE SO AND SO X IS READY TO GO BACK TO THE FIELD AND THANKFULLY HE TAKES THAT INTO CONSIDERATION, SEES THE PATIENT AND CLEARS THEM.
IT'S A TEAM EFFORT.
>> I OFTEN HAVE HEARD ABOUT SOMETHING CALLED ARDZ ROW SCOP ARTHROSCOPY.
>> IT'S FAIRLY COMMON.
IT'S A SCOPE JUST LIKE WE SAW IN THE PRESENTATION.
THEY'RE DOING LARYNGOSCOPE IN THE LARYNX AND THERE ARE MULTIPLE SCOPES.
THE LAPRO SCOPE IS FOR THE BELLY.
OUR SCOPES ARE ABOUT THE WIDTH OF A NUMBER 2 PENCIL AND IT ALLOWS US TO LOOK INTO AND SEE A LOT OF THINGS AND WE HAVE SMALL INSTRUMENTS AND WE CAN TAKE CARE OF A LOT OF THINGS.
WHEN I FIRST STARTED THIS, ARTHROSCOPY WE LOOKED AT IT THROUGH LIKE A TELESCOPE.
NOW WE ARE LOOKING AT IT LIKE A CAMERA AND IT HAS COME AN INCREDIBLY LONG WAY.
WE USED TO LOOK AND THEN OPEN THEM UP.
NOW WE CAN DO MOST OF OUR SURGERIES THROUGH THE ARTHROSCOPE.
>> YOU ARE ACTUALLY LOOKING IN THERE WHILE YOU ARE DOING THE SURGERY.
>> LOOKING ON A TV MONITOR WHILE WE ARE WORKING.
>> GUIDING YOU ALONG.
ONCE THE SURGERY GOES, COME OVER TO SUE'S OFFICE, RIGHT?
>> THAT'S CORRECT.
>> TELL US ABOUT AQUATIC THERAPY, OF ALL THE VARIOUS SPORTS INJURIES, NEVER HAD AQUATIC THERAPY.
THE PRINCIPLES OF PUTTING A PATIENT IN WATER, IF YOU CAN SUBMERGE THEM UP TO JUST BELOW THEIR NECK LEVEL, THEY ONLY WEIGH 10% OF THEIR ACTUAL BODY WEIGHT SO IT ALLOWS US TO MOVE PEOPLE ALONG MUCH QUICKER THAT HAD WEIGHT BEARING RESTRICTION GOING BACK TO THE SCOPES AS Dr. WIESE REVOLUTIONIZED THE HIP ARTHROSCOPY, AND THE PATIENTS HAVE WEIGHT BEARING RESTRICTIONS.
WE CAN PUT THEM IN THE POOL AND THEY CAN WALK NORMALLY BECAUSE THEY ONLY WEIGH 10% OF WHAT THEIR BODY WEIGHT TO BE AND PERFORM FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENTS THEY COULD NOT DO ON LAND BECAUSE OF THE RESTRICTION.
>> HAS THE PANDEMIC AFFECTED YOU IN TERMS OF WHAT YOU ARE DOING WITH YOUR LIVES.
>> WE HAVE BEEN BULLETPROOF THROUGH IT REALLY.
>> YOU ARE THIS MASS, CORRECT?
HOW HAS IT AFFECTED THINGS FOR YOU?
>> EVERYTHING IS CHANGED AS FAR AS PACING OF, YOU KNOW, GETTING KIDS BACK TO WHAT, IF THEY HAVEN'T HAD THE SPORTS TO PLAY.
THEY HAVEN'T HAD A LOT OF THE PRACTICES THAT THEY NORMALLY HAVE.
COMPETITIONS HAVE CHANGED SURGERY SCHEDULES HAVE CHANGED.
HE CAN SPEAK TO THAT.
IT'S AFFECTED EVERYBODY, I THINK.
IT KNOW IT HAS AFFECTED US IN PHYSICAL THERAPY.
>> GOING BACK TO A YEAR BEFORE THEY SHUT ALL THE SPORTS BASICALLY DOWN AND TRIED TO BRING THEM BACK LATER IN THE SEASON SO, YOU KNOW, SOME OF THE FOOTBALL, INSTEAD OF BEING PLAYED IN THE FALL, LAST SPRING THEY BROUGHT IT IN AND PUSHED IT INTO THE SPRING TIME, BUT THE BIG THING, TOO, THAT WE ALL HAVE TO BE CAREFUL OF IS, AS SUE MENTIONED, NOT HAVING TIME TO SOMETIMES PROPERLY CONDITION AND IN THAT SHORTENED TIMEFRAME GOING FROM ONE SPORT TO THE OTHER, I THINK, IT INCREASES THE OPPORTUNITY FOR OVERUSE TYPE INJURIES.
>> KIDS ARE OFF THE FIELD AND HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE THEM TO STAY IN TRAINING WHEN THEY'RE NOT ON THE FIELD PLAYING?
AND HAVING THE FUN OF PLAYING?
>> I'VE HAD ZOOM MEETINGS.
USING TECHNOLOGY, GETTING THE KIDS ON THERE AND MEDICAL CARE MAKE IGT THE LIGHTER SIDE, FUN.
LET THEM KIND OF-- YOU TRY TO GET THE KID TO TAKE OWNERSHIP AND TO BOND AND GET CLOSER TOGETHER SO IT'S A GREAT WAY BECAUSE ONCE YOU GET THEM CHATTERING, YOU KNOW, THAT SITUATION, IT'S NEW TO THEM BUT YET A VERY POSITIVE THING.
>> THAT STARTS TO BUILD A POSITIVE TEAM CULTURE.
>> EXACTLY.
>> WHAT ARE OTHER ELEMENTS OF BUILDING A POSITIVE TEAM CULTURE.
I KNOW YOU SAID A CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBUR CULTURE.
HOW DO YOU DO THAT, COACH?
>> BUILDING A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM CULTURE, IT HAS TO START WITH A COACH THAT HAS A VISION AND THE VISION HAS TO BE WHAT I CALL A TEACHER COACH'S VISION.
A TEACHER COACH CARES ABOUT THE KID.
>> THAT'S NUMBER ONE.
HAVE YOU TO CARE ABOUT YOUR ATHLETES.
YOU HAVE TO HAVE LAID OUT THE PLAN, HOW ARE WE GOING TO COMMUNICATE COMMUNICATION IS CRITICAL.
COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE BECAUSE THERE ARE TOO MANY OPPORTUNITIES IN THIS DAY AND AGE TO HAVE LITTLE BREAKDOWNS IF YOU WILL, BUT THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT BUILDING TRUST BETWEEN THE STUDENT ATHLETE AND YOU AND YOUR COACHES, IF YOU HAVE CREDIBLE PEOPLE WORKING WITH THE STUDENT ATHLETES, THEY RIGHT AWAY PICK UP ON IT AND YOU KNOW, TO BUILD THAT CULTURE, YOU HAVE TO, I THINK, BRING A LOT OF ENERGY AND YOU SET YOUR STANDARDS.
YOU HAVE TO HAVE HIGH STANDARDS.
YOU'VE GOT TO DO A GREAT JOB OF GETTING THEM INTO THE GYM OR ON TO THE TURF, IF YOU WILL, WHICH EVER SPORT IT IS, AND SHOW THEM, YOU KNOW, IT'S NOT SO MUCH TO SHOW THEM WHAT YOU KNOW, BUT AGAIN SHOW THEM THAT YOU CARE, AND BY TRYING TO INDIVIDUALIZE, GET TO KNOW EACH OF THEM, THEIR LIKES, DISLIKES AND SHOW THEM THAT THEY'RE CAPABLE OF DOING MORE THAN THEY EVER THOUGHT OF.
STEPPING OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE.
MANY OF US, OUR COMFORT ZONE IS OUR ENEMY.
IT HOLDS US BACK, MAKES US TENTATIVE.
WHEN YOU ARE IN COMPETITION, IF YOU ARE NOT IN THE COMPETITION FOCUSES AND ABLE TO REFOCUS AND KEEP THE DISTRACTIONS OUT AND HAVE THAT WILL CONFIDENCE THAT, MAN, I CAN DO THIS, WE CAN DO THIS TOGETHER, IT'S BUILDING THE CANI.
C OR CONSTANT, A FOR AND, FL FOR NEVER ENDING AND I FOR IMPROVEMENT.
IF YOU ARE TEACHING ABOUT CONSTANT IMPROVEMENT AND NOT SAYING WE HAVE TO WIN THIS GAME, I THINK YOU BUILD YOUR CULTURE EVERY SINGLE DAY.
AND IF YOU JUST TAKE YOUR INDEX FINGER, RICH, AND TRIED TO PUT THEM TOGETHER AND WITHOUT TOUCHING YOUR INDEX FINGER TO YOUR THUMB, SEE HOW CLOSE YOU CAN GET, AND IF WE ALL JUST IMPROVE THAT MUCH EVERY SINGLE DAY IN PRACTICE.
>> I CAN DO THAT.
>> WE ARE GOING TO BE PATIENT WITH YOU.
BUT IF WE ALL IMPROVE THAT MUCH, DO YOU KNOW HOW POWERFUL THAT BECOMES?
AND NOW THEY'RE ENGAGED AND NOW THEY BUILD THAT PRIDE AND NOW YOU HELP TAKE THEM FROM HERE TO HERE TO HERE AND ANOTHER BIG THING IS, YOU HAVE TO MAKE EVERYBODY A PART OF YOUR TEAM OF YOUR PROGRAM.
>> EVERYBODY ON THE TEAM.
>> EVERYBODY.
>> AS A COACH, IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO HELP EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHETHER THEY'RE GETTING GREAT PLAYING TIME OR WHETHER THEY'RE SEEING MINIMAL PLAYING TIME FOR VARIOUS REASONS, THEY HAVE TO FEEL LIKE THEY'RE A CONTRIBUTING MEMBER.
AS HUMANS, WE ALL WANT TO BE PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER THAN OURSELVES.
WE SET OUR GOALS AND WORK HARD EVERY DAY AND WE TALK ABOUT, WHAT IS A CHAMPION?
HOW DOES A CHAMPION WORK, HOW DO THEY TREAT EACH OTHER?
WHAT IS A GOOD TEAMMATE?
WE TEACH LEADERSHIP SKILLS.
AND FINALLY CULTURE BUILDS BEHAVIORS.
BEHAVIORS LEAD TO HABITS.
CONSTANT DISCIPLINE, HABITS, EXECUTION AND PERFORMANCE LEVELS RISE AND YOU GET THEM TO BELIEVE AND REALLY GIVE WHAT THEY HAVE AND FINALLY HABITS LEAD TO WHAT HAPPENS IN YOUR FUTURE.
