Hi, I'm Janellyn.
- And I'm Chelsea Boodoo.
- And today, we're bringing you an exclusive interview of what it's like to talk STEM careers.
- As a radio host.
- And as a TV host.
Chelsie, tell me, where are you and what do you do?
- Thanks for having me Janellyn.
I'm in East Lansing, Michigan, where I'm studying for my PhD in biomedical engineering.
But, I'm also a producer and host of the "Sci-Files" on Impact 89FM.
- What are the "Sci-Files"?
- The "Sci-Files" is a science radio show and podcast where I highlight student research in a wide variety of fields at Michigan State University.
- What are some of the most memorable interviews you've gotten to do?
- My favorite interview actually took place at a zoo, specifically at Potter Park Zoo in Lansing, Michigan.
This episode was about Dopsie, a black rhino who was pregnant at the time.
I was able to see Dopsie get an ultrasound between the interview, and I was even able to feed her and pet her.
- I don't think I can pick a favorite interview, but I do have a few favorites.
I got to interview this Delta Airline pilot.
I got to talk on, like, the intercom over the plane.
And I got to pretend I was the pilot, so that was a lot of fun.
How do you prepare for a show?
- Our interviewees are students here at MSU.
Most of them have not been at a radio station before, so I also try to help them take big, complicated science words and turn them into something that everyone from all ages can understand.
What was the coolest thing that you've learned while hosting the show?
- I think one of the coolest things is that there are so many careers out there to pursue.
And whatever you're passionate about, you can find something that will fit that passion.
And then that way, every day you can do what you love for your job.
What is your advice to kids, particularly girls, who are interested in pursuing STEM?
- My advice would be not to give up, stay curious, and pursue what they're passionate about.
But also, they should not forget to believe in themselves.
- Whether it's on TV or radio, you can always tune in to learn more about careers in STEM.
