My relationship with my father was never simple.

Growing up in Brazil, I never really fit in with the boys.

When I was 10, I discovered gymnastics.

I loved it.

Found a community there.

But that year, I started acting more feminine.

I remember my dad telling me to talk straight, a lot.

Eventually, his pressure made me so uncomfortable that I just decided to quit.

Now, I've been out as a gay man for over a decade.

From the outside, our relationship looks great.

But the truth is, it's still superficial.

I suspect it's largely because I have all these things from our past that I've just never said to him.

I invited him to come to Los Angeles to have a conversation.

My hope is that we can go deeper than ever before.
