A MAP JUST INSIDE THE DOOR SHOWS THE SHOP IS THE DESTINATION FOR QUILTERS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.

MEET JUDY SABONETT OF KEEPSAKE QUILTING, NOT ONLY THE WORLD'S LARGEST QUILT SHOP, BUT I THINK THE MOST COMPLETE.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS AND HOW IT ALL STARTED.
- WE STARTED WITH THE CATALOG FIRST, AND THAT WAS ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO.
WE HAD LADIES WHO WOULD COME TO THE OFFICE AND WANT TO SEE THE FABRIC AND TOUCH IT AND FEEL IT.
WE DIDN'T HAVE COULD DO THAT, SO WE STARTED THE STORE, AND IT JUST KEPT GROWING.
WE HAVE EVERYTHING HERE THAT WE HAVE IN THE CATALOG, PLUS A LOT MORE.
- THERE IS SO MUCH TO SEE, AND YOU HAVE COMBINED FABRICS, NOTIONS, AND A LOT OF GIFTS TOO.
- WE DO HAVE A LOT OF TOURISTS IN THE AREA, SO WE TRY TO HAVE SOMETHING FOR THEM AS WELL AS FOR OUR QUILTERS.
- AND WHAT ABOUT ALL THESE LOVELIES HANGING ABOVE US?
- THESE ARE PART OF A CHALLENGE THAT WE DID.
WE DO TWO CHALLENGES A YEAR, AND THIS WAS THE "CREATE A FLIGHT OF FANCY" KEEPSAKE CHALLENGE.
THE LADIES WERE SENT SIX FABRICS, AND THEY COULD USE ALL OF THESE, BUT THEY HAD TO USE AT LEAST FOUR, AND THEY COULD ADD TWO OF THEIR OWN.
SO IT'S REALLY WONDERFUL TO SEE WHAT PEOPLE HAVE DONE USING A PALETTE OF COLORS THAT THEY HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF BEFORE THEY GET IT.
- THEY LEARN ABOUT THIS FROM THE CATALOG,THEY ARE ABLE TO SELECT THIS.
IT CHANGES EVERY YEAR YOU DO A DIFFERENT ONE?
- EACH CHALLENGE IS DIFFERENT.
THE COLORS ARE DIFFERENT, THE PATTERNS, AND THE ENTIRE THEME OF THE CHALLENGE CHANGES.
- THEN LOOK FOR THIS TRAVELING AROUND THE COUNTRY, MAYBE AT YOUR LOCAL SHOP OR AT A SYMPOSIUM.
- YES, WE HAVE THE FIRST AND SECOND PLACE WINNER'S QUILTS TRAVEL, STATE FAIRS, QUILT GUILD SHOWS, LOTS OF DIFFERENT PLACES.

- WE HAVE LOTS OF CONVERSATIONAL PRINTS, AND LOTS OF DOG AND CAT PRINTS, BECAUSE WE HAVE A DOG WHO HAS HIS PICTURE IN THE CATALOG ALL THE TIME.
WE HAVE ACTUALLY HAD A FABRIC MADE THAT HAS HIS BREED ON IT.

IN THE 1930S, FABRICS WERE SO POPULAR, WE DECIDED TO USE THOSE.
- THESE ARE THE FABRICS THAT YOU'VE CHOSEN FROM?
- YES, WE HAVE COLLECTIONS, SQUARES, AND THE SOLIDS, AND ASSORTMENT OF FAT QUARTER CUTS.
SO THOSE ARE THE ONES WE USED.
AND THEN DEBBIE DESIGNED THE LAYOUT ON THE QUILT PRO SYSTEM.
AND THAT ALSO GAVE US TEMPLATES TO USE.
AND WE DESIGNED A SUNBONNET SUE.
CUT OUT THE PATCHES USING JUST A TRADITIONAL METHOD.
YOU COULD USE ANYTHING.
AND THEN WHAT WE DID WAS COPY THE PATTERN ON TRACER PAPER RIGHT IN THE PHOTOCOPIER AND USE THOSE BY PITTING THEM ONTO THE TOP OF THE FABRIC AND ALIGNED OUR LITTLE SUNBONNET SUES THAT WAY.
SO THAT MADE IT QUICK.
- NOW IN THIS CASE, YOU HAVE TURNED UNDER THE RAW EDGES.
BUT THAT, OF COURSE, WOULD BE OPTIONAL DEPENDING ON WHAT TECHNIQUE YOU USE.
- JUST DECIDED TO DO THAT, AND THEN BUTTONHOLE STITCHED.
BUT YOU COULD USE A VARIETY OF TECHNIQUES, YOUR FAVORITE.
- BUT THE BLACK THREAD REALLY HIGHLIGHTS, I THINK.
I'VE ALWAYS HEARD BLACK BRINGS OUT COLOR, AND IT CERTAINLY DOES HERE.
- THE LADIES IN THE '30S LIKED THAT TECHNIQUE.
I CAN SEE WHY.
IT REALLY POPS OUT ALL THOSE BRIGHT COLORS THEY WERE USING.
- NOW ABOUT THOSE TRIANGLES.
- WELL, TRIANGLES, THERE ARE ALL KINDS OF NEW THINGS THAT WE HAVE AVAILABLE TODAY.
ONE OF THEM IS TRIANGLE PAPERS WHERE WE JUST CUT STRIPS OF FABRIC, PIN THE FABRIC AND PAPER TOGETHER, AND SEW ON THE LINES.
THEN IT'S JUST A MATTER OF CUTTING THEM APART, AND YOU CREATE A SQUARE.
- NOW YOU DO TAKE THE PAPER OFF.
- THAT'S RIGHT, TAKE THAT PAPER OFF.
I TRIM THE DOG EARS, AND I HAVE A SQUARE.
CUT OUT LOTS OF TRIANGLES.
THESE ARE OUR FINAL UNITS THAT WE'RE WORKING WITH.
- WELL, IT'S A VERY SUBTLE APPROACH TO THE STAR.
I'M WONDERING IF OUR AUDIENCE CAN PICK OUT THE STARS.
I THINK THAT'S WHAT REALLY PULLS THIS QUILT TOGETHER AND MAKES IT UNIQUE.
YOU'VE GOT THE UNDERPLAY OF THAT STAR SURROUNDING ALL THE APPLIQUÉ FIGURES.
THAT WAS FUN BECAUSE WE WANTED THE STARS, BUT WE DIDN'T WANT THEM TO POP OUT.
SO WE USED A DESIGN WALL AND JUST LAID OUT ALL OUR TRIANGLES AND OUR APPLIQUÉS AND JUST PLAYED WITH COLORS UNTIL WE WERE HAPPY WITH WHAT WE HAD THERE.
GOOD REASON TO HAVE A COMPUTER AND BE ONLINE, RIGHT?
SURE IS.

FOR TV TAPING, THINGS HAVE BEEN TURNED AROUND, BUT ON NORMAL DAYS, HERE IS MY SETUP.
OF COURSE I NEED FABRIC AND BOOK STORAGE, SO ONE WALL IS DEVOTED TO THAT, WITH SLIDING DOORS SO FABRIC IS SHIELDED FROM LIGHT.
THEN MORE STORAGE FOR SLIDES, WORKSHOP SAMPLES, AND A COMPUTER-- OR, IT'S MY BUSINESS CORNER.
MY REGULAR SEWING STATION FACES OUTSIDE, FRAMED BY A WINDOW WELL, PAINTED WITH AS MANY BRIGHT COLORS I COULD THINK OF.
WITH A PACKAGE OF COTTON BATTING, I WAS ABLE TO CREATE A DESIGN WALL BY JUST STITCHING A TUBE SO A LATTICE STRIP OF WOOD COULD SLIP THROUGH-- A GREAT PLACE TO REARRANGE FABRIC AND WATCH THE GROWTH OF A QUILT.
THE CENTER OF THE ROOM IS THEN LEFT FOR MY CUTTING TABLE, AND AT THE END OF THE DAY, A COMFORTABLE CHAIR BY THE FIRE FOR QUILTING AND TV WATCHING.
WHY, IT'S A LITTLE PIECE OF QUILT HEAVEN.

DRAW ONE DIAGONAL LINE IN THAT SQUARE FROM CORNER TO CORNER, AND THEN YOUR SECOND LINE HAS TO DO WITH FINDING THE MIDPOINT ON TWO RIGHT ANGLES.

DRAW ANOTHER LINE.
THEN MAKE THAT DIAGONAL AGAIN, BUT THIS TIME DRAW THAT CORNER, SPLITTING THAT CORNER JUST TO THAT SECOND LINE THAT WE DREW.

ALL RIGHT, USING MY GRID GRIP-- AND IT'S REALLY NICE TO HAVE A QUARTER-INCH CONTINUOUS GRID FOR MY DESIGN MEDIUM BECAUSE THEY BECOME THE TEMPLATES TOO-- I WAS ABLE TO SIMPLY CUT THOSE APART, IRON THOSE ON THE BACK SIDE OF FABRIC, REMEMBERING THAT THE GRID IS ALIGNED WITH THE GRAINLINE OF THE FABRIC.
THEN WITH MY SEE-THROUGH RULER-- OH, AND I WANTED TO MENTION A TIP OF THE DAY TODAY.
WHEN YOU BUY THESE RULERS, THEY COME WITH A PLASTIC COATING ON THEM, AND SOMETIMES YOU'RE IN SUCH A HURRY TO DO PATCHWORK, YOU FORGET TO TAKE IT OFF.
REMOVE THAT PLASTIC COATING, AND THEN I LIKE TO USE AN INDELIBLE PEN AND MARK SOME SORT OF A CODE ON YOUR RULER-- A SQUARE, YOUR INITIALS, OR SOMETHING-- AND THEN IT WON'T GET MIXED UP WITH OTHER PEOPLE'S RULERS.
ALL RIGHT, I TAKE THAT PARTICULAR PRESSED TEMPLATE WITH MY SEE-THROUGH RULER AND ALIGNING THE QUARTER-INCH ON MY OUTSIDE EDGE AND HOLDING MY HAND FIRMLY, I'M THEN VERY EASILY ABLE TO CUT OUT MY TEMPLATE.
AND I CAN EITHER WALK AROUND THE TABLE OR TURN MY PATCHWORK AND CONTINUE CUTTING OUT.
NOW, TODAY WE HAVE RULERS THAT ALLOW US TO DO THAT BECAUSE THEY INCLUDE THE QUARTER-INCH ON ALL THREE SIDES.
THERE ARE TWO RULERS THAT I REALLY CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT.

FOR INSTANCE, IN THIS PARTICULAR ONE, THE LONG SIDE OF THIS RIGHT-ANGLE TRIANGLE IS ON THE STRAIGHT OF THE GRAIN.
AND NOTICE THAT, REMEMBERING THIS IS A 12-INCH BLOCK, AND THIS IS 12-- THE RULER GOES UP TO 12-- ALL I NEEDED TO DO WAS TO PUT THIS RULER ON THE STRAIGHT EDGE, CUT OUT TWO SIDES, AND MY SEAM ALLOWANCE IS INCLUDED.
IT WORKS WITH THE RIGHT-ANGLED ONE ALSO.
FOR INSTANCE, I KNOW THAT ONE TEMPLATE HAS A RIGHT ANGLE, AND I KNOW FROM HERE, THE RIGHT ANGLE TO THAT POINT, IT WAS 6 INCHES.
I JUST LOOK AT 6 INCHES RIGHT HERE, PUT THAT ON THE STRAIGHT EDGE, AND ONCE I'VE CUT THAT OUT, MY SEAM ALLOWANCE IS INCLUDED.
IT MAKES IT VERY NICE TODAY.

BUT IF YOU HAVE ADDED A 1/4-INCH SEAM ALLOWANCE, AN ACCURATE ONE, ON ALL EDGES OF YOUR TEMPLATE, THEN YOU CAN REMOVE THESE, BECAUSE AFTER ALL, YOU'RE THEN GOING TO BE USING THE RAW EDGE OF THE MATERIAL TO SEW IN 1/4 OF AN INCH.
NOW, IT'S REALLY NICE BECAUSE ONCE YOU REMOVE THESE TEMPLATES, YOU KNOW THAT YOU CAN REPRESS THEM MANY TIMES.
NOW I'M READY TO TURN ON MY SEWING MACHINE, AND ONCE THAT MACHINE COMES ON, YOU WILL REALIZE THAT SEWING MACHINES TODAY HAVE ENTERED THE COMPUTER WORLD.

IN ORDER TO MAKE THAT WORK, HOWEVER, I NEED TO MOVE MY NEEDLE POSITION OVER 2 TIMES.
THEN, LOWERING THE NEEDLE, I CAN LINE UP RIGHT ON THAT 1/4-INCH.
WELL, WHAT'S HAPPENED IN THE PATCHWORK FIELD TODAY IS THAT MOST SEWING MACHINES HAVE A PATCHWORK FOOT.
IT'S A NUMBER 37 IN MY CASE.
ALL I CAN DO IS REMOVE MY ALL-PURPOSE FOOT, AND BRINGING MY NEEDLE POSITION BACK TO THE CENTER, I CAN THEN PUT ON MY PATCHWORK FOOT.
MACHINE PIECING STARTS WITH THE SMALLEST PIECES FIRST.
NOTICE HOW I'VE GOT THEM PINNED IN PLACE, TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THAT RIGHT ANGLE.
WHEN I GET DOWN HERE TO THE DIAMOND, I'M ABLE TO LINE UP THOSE 45-DEGREE POINTS.
THERE ARE 3 SEAMS TO TAKE HERE.
I'M GOING TO TAKE ONE, AND NOTICE THAT I HAVE A NEUTRAL THREAD ON MY SEWING MACHINE, AND I QUITE OFTEN USE A STILETTO OR EVEN A SEAM RIPPER AS A LITTLE FINGER PUSHER AS I GO DOWN HERE.
NOW, ONCE THESE OTHER 2 SEAMS ARE STITCHED, I KNOW THEN I'M GOING TO BE FINISHING THE BLOCK WITH 3 MORE TRIANGLES.
I'M A LITTLE BIT FURTHER ALONG ON THIS BLOCK.
I'VE GOT THE MEDIUM TRIANGLE SEWN ON.
I'VE STITCHED THE 2 LARGE ONES TOGETHER, AND NOTICE HOW I'VE STAGGERED THE SEAMS, CLOSED SEAMS GOING IN OPPOSITE DIRECTION.
OKAY, IT REALLY HELPS IF I AM PRESSING THOSE SEAMS TOWARD THE BLACK.
NOW I'M READY TO FINISH THAT SEAM.
AND I DO NOT LIKE TO SEW OVER THE PINS, SO ONCE I GET UP TO HERE, THEN I PUT MY NEEDLE IN THE MATERIAL AND LINE UP ALL 3 CORNERS HERE, MAKING CERTAIN THAT THEY'RE EVEN.
COMING ALL THE WAY DOWN, I'LL POSITION THIS SEAM SO IT'S GOING TOWARD THE NEEDLE.
AND THEN, OF COURSE, IF I WERE DOING MANY TANGRAM BLOCKS, I'D HAVE A WHOLE KITE SITUATION GOING.
BUT WITH JUST ONE BLOCK, I'M THEN READY TO DO MY PRESSING.
NOW, IF I SIMPLY PRESS THIS IN ONE DIRECTION, I WOULD HAVE THAT LUMPY INTERSECTION, BUT I HAVE FOUND THAT IF I RELEASE THE STITCHES THAT WERE ALL THE WAY OUT TO THE EDGE, THE RAW EDGE, THAT ALLOWS ME TO PUT MY BLOCK ON MY IRONING BOARD, AND THEN I'M GOING TO BE OPENING UP THAT LITTLE INTERSECTION RIGHT AT THE MIDDLE, AND I WILL THEN TWIRL THAT SEAM.
IT MAKES A VERY NICE, SOFT INTERSECTION.
I DO IT ON ONE SIDE, AND THEN I COME ON THE OTHER.
NOW I HAVE A NICE, SOFT INTERSECTION WITH THAT 4-PATCH THAT I'VE CREATED RIGHT IN THE CENTER OF MY BLOCK.

NOW IT WAS LAP QUILTED IN RATHER A UNIQUE WAY, AND I HAVE SOME SAMPLE BLOCKS DOWN HERE FOR YOU TO SEE.
THE LAP QUILTING CONNECTION CAN BE MADE ON EITHER THE FRONT OR THE BACK SIDE.
THE IMPORTANT STEPS ARE TO FIRST TRIM OFF SO THAT YOUR FRONT BATTING AND BACKING ARE ALL STRAIGHT.
YOU DON'T NEED AN EXCESS ON ONE SIDE.
I'VE CHOSEN TO MACHINE STITCH THE BACKINGS TOGETHER.
IN THIS INSTANCE, I'VE INCLUDED THE BATTING ON ONE SIDE.
THEN, WORKING ON A FLAT SURFACE, I WILL PIN THE FRONT SIDE FREE.
THIS IS GOING TO BE APPLIQUED IN A FEW MINUTES.
OF COURSE, YOU REALIZE IN LAP QUILTING, YOU CANNOT MACHINE OR HAND QUILT ANY FURTHER THAN A HALF AN INCH FROM THE RAW EDGE.
YOU NEED THAT AMOUNT TO WORK WITH.

I THEN WOULD LET ONE SIDE GO STRAIGHT, AND I WILL TURN THE OPPOSITE SIDE UNDER A QUARTER OF AN INCH AND HAND APPLIQUÉ THAT IN PLACE.
MAKE CERTAIN IF YOU'RE USING A CONTRASTING THREAD THAT YOU HAVEN'T GONE THROUGH TO THE BACK SIDE.
I'VE LEFT A HALF OF THIS CONNECTING SEAM HERE FROM ONE SECTION TO THE OTHER DONE, SO I CAN SHOW YOU THE MACHINE QUILTING AND HOW I DID THAT ON THE ENTIRE QUILT.
FOR MACHINE QUILTING, I'M GOING TO USE MY WALKING FOOT.
NOW, I'VE PUT SOME OF THE BICYCLE CLIPS IN MY ROLLED-UP QUILT, AND NOTICE THAT I AM GOING TO BE MACHINE QUILTING FROM THE BACK SIDE.
IT'S A LOT EASIER TO SEE RATHER THAN THIS DARK SASHING.
I LIKE TO, WHEN I'M MACHINE QUILTING, LENGTHEN MY STITCH A LITTLE BIT, SO I'M GOING UP TO, OH, JUST UNDER 3 STITCHES PER INCH.
I WILL TAKE ONE STITCH AND PULL UP THAT BOBBIN THREAD.
I DON'T LIKE THAT BOBBIN THREAD TO GET CAUGHT.
IN THE SASHING, I'M SIMPLY DOING A WAVY LINE ALL THE WAY DOWN.
I'M GOING FIRST ON ONE SIDE, AND THEN I'M COMING ON THE OTHER.
AND THAT ALLOWS ME TO JUST DO ALMOST LIKE A SERPENTINE ALL THE WAY DOWN.
I KNOW YOU'D LIKE TO SEE THE BACK OF THIS QUILT.
IF YOU LOOK CAREFULLY, YOU CAN SEE THAT I'VE USED SOME OF THE LEFTOVER PIECES TO CREATE ALMOST A RAIL FENCE DESIGN ON THE BACK SIDE.
WE CALL IT A TWO-FOR-ONE.
THROUGH THE MAGIC OF TV, WE'RE GOING TO SWITCH THE QUILT.
WHAT FUN TO CREATE A SECONDARY DESIGN ON THE BACK SIDE OF THIS QUILT, ALL THE WAY DOWN TO A TOUCH OF SERENDIPITY WHERE I RAN OUT OF FABRIC.
NOW, MAKING THIS QUILT IN SECTIONS ALLOWED ME TO PUT THE BINDING ON AS IT GREW.
I USED MORE OF THE LEFTOVERS TO PIECE THAT BINDING.
WE'RE GOING TO LEAVE YOU TODAY WITH A DECORATING TIP.
