Myself, and two other colleagues within my science department, we ended up doing a Stanford HollyHock grant, which allowed us to become a part of this teaching cohort that focus in on implementing social justice and equity within the classroom.
Science historically has been taught, and even the way that I was taught is definitely from, a very one side perspective.
And as a result of that, because Tacoma is one of the most diverse, racially, ethnically, linguistically, culturally, school districts within Washington state, a lot of students didn't necessarily see themselves in the curriculum.
And so this is why we actually want to bring in these other perspectives, so that you understand that science just isn't for one type of person, but it's for lots of people.
